Sun rays can be converted to electricity. This opportunity is increasingly being implemented by home owners seeking to decrease their carbon emissions and assist a cleaner environment. More and more, households are installing home solar electricity with battery backup systems to power their homes. Solar electricity systems, can be configured with a battery bank as backup. The battery bank is used to store electricity excess to the needs of the household when the solar system is operating. The stored electricity is drawn down during the night or cloudy days. Of course, having solar panels as first-line generators of electricity and battery backup will greatly minimize the public grid electricity a home consumes. Home solar electricity systems typically connect into the public electricity grid system. Grid connection is another line of backup so that the household always has electricity. The solar panel system with batteries is the first line of supply. It minimizes the electricity drawn by the household from the grid. A household thinking of generating solar electricity system needs to decide the capacity of the system that best fits its needs. One handy calculation to have completed for this decision is the amount of power the household needs when all its guns are blazing, that is, its peak electricity draw when all the appliances routinely used are switched on. This can be quite a large number since electric heaters, air conditioning units, televisions, microwave ovens and even the humble hot water kettle all require big watts to operate. The capacity of a battery bank is stated as ampere or amp hours. For instance, a battery may be stated to supply 140 amp hours of power. The electricity that can be drawn from the battery is fully charged can be stated as watt hours. This is done by multiplying amp hours by voltage. So the 140 amp hour battery can supply a 110V wired home with 140 times 110 or 15.4 Kwh of electricity. A solar home electricity with battery backup system typically consists of the following components. First, the solar panels that charge the batteries. Second, a battery bank into which electricity is stored. Third, an inverter that converts the electricity stored in batteries to the correct voltage required by the household. Finally, the system has either a manual or automatic change over switch that redirects the power supply from the grid to the inverter, as needed.
