Thriving in a safe environment is the perfect setting created by co-troop leaders, Gwen Combs and Sonna Lynn Fernandez. For eight years, this duo has been creating a Girl Scout life for young women. At one time, they grew their troop from five to 21 members proving their thriving system. Life is bustling for these women. Combs works for the Boise School District and Fernandez works at the Idaho Transportation Department. Although it is busy, it is thriving busy. Both women have full lives with work, family and Girl Scouts. Combs and Fernandez are passionate about keeping girls in Girl Scouts because of all the

opportunities for older girls. As young women grow older there are opportunities for national and international travel, high awards, leadership roles, counselor in training program, and individual and group community service. Like their leaders, the troop members are busy young women in both middle and high school. These ladies pursue sports, music, academics, and family commitments, but it is their deep bond with each other compels them to make adjustments in scheduling to include their peers in the troop. Girl Scouts is rooted in generations. Combs’s mother was her Troop Leader, and when her mother passed away, friends encouraged Combs to remain involved. Fernandez had the same Troop Leader through

It created a continuity and stability known among the Girl Scouts. It has been proven, girls who remain involved in Girl Scouts are less likely to become pregnant in their teens, avoid drinking and drugs, and be more productive in community. Now these ladies are providing the same continuity for the next generation. Motivated to be involved. both ladies happily agreed on a girls’ trip. When the mission was accomplished, they took 13 girls to Light House in Pond d’Oreille for seven days. To achieve this, the young women embarked on a two year planning project to raise the money. With the many fundraising projects, a donation by the Light House

Foundation, and encouragement of Combs and Fernandez, the young ladies enjoyed a fully paid trip earned and enjoyed. Combs says the focus to help girls develop courage, confidence, and character is rooted in helping them consider a higher order of thinking and develop an understanding of their world community. That’s the goal.

Fernandez says, “The world is so small due to technology. The girls see what girls around the world have to face. They see girls their same age dealing with incredible challenges, and they want to get involved and help.” That is what the Girl Scout program aims to do - create good citizenry. and it is encouraged. The local organization has young women, like troop member, Ariana, with their sites on the White House. To get there will take training, leadership, an understanding in how to achieve goals, and the creation of life plans. This is vital for all young women with a shine in their eyes. It doesn’t stop there, but begins. With the cookie business in full swing, the women will be out in force. Readers are bound to find one of these young entrepreneurs

These young women run their small businesses to earn money for summer camp, but take the lessons into life. Most likely you will find the Combs-Fernandez duo and their crew troop building the next step in their future with their sweet treats. And if you look real close, you might see your dreams in their eyes.

They could use motivational posters as a constant reminder of what is requires to be successful, and they might replace the pictures of the people they simply idolize with pictures of what success looks and feels like.
