Treasure S Valley is better than ever — and so is Best of Treasure Valley

erving as editor of the Best of Treasure Valley readers survey is an enlightening job every year. No matter how long you’ve lived in the Boise area, there’s no way you’re aware of every amazing aspect of this place. And even if you are familiar with many of the hardworking people and businesses honored in this publication, how long has it been since you’ve truly appreciated — make that SAVORED — them? (I am sooo craving a turkey and avocado sub for lunch from Best Sandwich winner Cobby’s.) A quarter-century ago, the Idaho Statesman’s annual people’s choice awards began as Best of Boise. Eventually, the name was widened to include the rest of the Valley. But after last year’s 25th anniversary edition, it seemed like yet another tweak was in order. The Treasure Valley has grown. We needed to grow, too. So in 2014, we nearly doubled the number of categories to more than 100, expanding our focus to include more of what makes the Valley special. Along with perennial favorites such as Best Pizza, Best Sporting Event and Best Music Venue, we’ve added awards ranging from Best Hotel to Best Place to Buy a Car, from Best Bartender to Best Surgeon. Idaho Statesman readers — thousands of them — are the motor that powers this truckload of useful information. In April and May, they made nominations to help create the ballots. Then they voted on the finalists. After tallying the votes, first, second and third place have been awarded in all categories. Some of the competitions were blowouts. Others were photo finishes. Don’t believe me? A single vote separated first and second place for Best Family Doctor. If you’ve spent your entire life in the Boise area, consider Best of Treasure Valley a refresher course — a way to stay current on a constantly evolving market. If you’re new to the Valley, welcome to your official tour guide to paradise. Michael Deeds

his year’s reader picks get to the heart of how we connect with culture in our part of the world. The Treasure Valley’s natural beauty often converges with something fun to do, creating an experience that transcends a simple event. That’s the goal of Charlie Fee, producing artistic director of Idaho Shakespeare Festival, which again tops Best Performing Arts Group. “It’s more than just going to see great theater,” he says. “The setting is gorgeous, you see people you know and there is a deep history to the community. I think that’s why we’re so lucky to have the support we do, and we’re super grateful.” For a diverse urban experience, hit Downtown Boise, the readers’ choice for Best Place to Impress Out-of-Towners. You can dive into the lively dining scene, go to First Thursday gallery walks, hit the Saturday farmers markets or shake your groove thing at the Balcony Club, voted Best Place to Dance. Why not take the Boise Greenbelt to get there? Readers love spending time on the Greenbelt, the Best Spot for Family Recreation. “It’s a great place for families,” says Teresa Bray of Boise, who says she visits it every day. “We

use it for exercise, we bike Downtown to happy hours or dinner. Anything that’s off the Greenbelt is a favorite of ours.” The outdoor environment at the Idaho Botanical Garden is the readers’ pick for Best Music Venue. You can relax on the lawn with a picnic, see a touring act at Outlaw Field or just enjoy the summer views around Table Rock. Other Treasure Valley experiences that made No. 1 include a trip to the lakeside village of McCall (Best Day Trip), a Boise State Bronco football game (Best Community Event), and a Curtis Stigers concert (Best Musician). Going to a movie at the new 15-screen Village Cinema is an impressive experience, too. The Meridian multiplex squeaked past The Flicks to win Best Movie Theater with its gourmet dining, cocktails and optional D-Box seats that coordinate motion to cinematic action. Writers, artists and media personalities who earned voter accolades were those who chronicle these experiences. Mix 106 morning hosts Mike & Kate and Channel 7 anchor Maggie O’Mara are the voices that get us on our way each morning. Idaho Statesman columnist and author Tim Woodward tells our collective story in his essays. And painter Ward Hooper’s art captures and lionizes the Valley’s lifestyle.

he restaurant business is tough, and the formula for success is so precarious that it sometimes feels magical when it works. Success requires long hours, business savvy, the right location, and a combination of kitchen and floor chemistry. Creating a great restaurant always comes down to the details, says Robert Castoro, owner of Barbacoa, a restaurant you’ll find scattered throughout this year’s Best of 276 Bobwhite Court, Boise, 338-5000 Treasure Valley Food and Drink categories. barbacoa-boise.com “I’m a detail-oriented freak,” Castoro admits. “I’ve thought about everything that happens from the moment 2. graciously — graciously is a word we use a lot here.” Gino Vuolo, owner and chef at Gino’s Italian Ristorante in Meridian, agrees. “Whatever you do, it has to be sincere,” Vuolo says. “When I greet my customers, I want them to know I really want them here. Then it’s all about the quality of service, the food and keeping it authentic.” Gino’s continues one of the longest multiyear Best of Treasure Valley winning runs — for Best Italian. Lucky Fins Seafood Grill opened a second location in 2013 — this one in Downtown Boise — and edged popular Fresh Off the Hook by a narrow margin for Best Seafood. There is always a bit of irony. The top two winners in the new Best Gluten-free Menu category are grocery stores — Whole Foods and the Boise Co-op. Neither has a menu per se, but both offer gluten- and wheat-free selections on their hot and cold food bars. This year’s Best Coffeehouse is Dutch Bros. Coffee, a drive-through chain with 13 local locations. So, it’s not really a coffeehouse, but people rave about their coffee drinks. This year’s readers poll has a new Best Chef category, which reflects the Valley’s growing interest in the local culinary scene. Chef Lou Aaron of Westside Drive-in — who gains additional exposure on a local TV station — took the top prize.

hese are the foods you seek, you crave, you gotta have right now. The ones you can taste before you even order them, before you even leave the house to get them. I want the Best Burger in the Treasure Valley. I want the Best Ice Cream. (OK, no one has got to have the Best Salad as this very moment, but stick with me.) When you get that feeling, these are the places you beat a path toward because you know they’ll deliver just what you’re craving. You’ll be able to lean back, wipe your face and smile. Full. Satisfied. Like after you’ve finished the Valley’s Best Burger at Five Guys Burger and Fries. The patties hit the grill when you come in the door, and the burger is garnished just the way you want with as many (or as few) toppings as you wish. Or when you’ve polished off a bowl of the Best Fries at Boise Fry Company. The fries are definitely the stars at the restaurant’s four locations. The toughest choice is deciding which variety and which cut and which salts and dipping

sauces. Go ahead and order that second bowl of fries. Can’t you taste, from wherever it is that you’re reading this, the glazed perfection of a Krispy Kreme doughnut, voted Best Doughnut? Simple, yet delicious. Can’t you smell your favorite pizza at Flying Pie, winner of Best Pizza for something like the zillionth time in a row? (Even if it’s not technically “your day,” it’s always your day to stop in for pizza.) Picture the shelves of dessert options at the Valley’s Best Dessert joint, The Cheesecake Factory. With more types of cheesecake (caramel pecan turtle cheesecake, anyone?) than you can realistically consume in six months, there is something for everyone. That’s the other thing we love about our food favorites: They give us choices. Pick one of the 16 sandwich options at Cobby’s Sandwich Shops, winner of Best Sandwich. Or mix-and-match any combination of toppings at Cold Stone Creamery, winner of Best Ice Cream. And, yes, build your own super salad at Idaho Pizza Company, home of the Valley’s Best Salad. The possibilities are endless. But one thing is certain: You’re happy. That craving is gone. Until the next time.

eorge Thorogood drinks alone. But Best of Treasure Valley voters? No way, Jose ... Cuervo! They’re more likely to dance around at the latest trendy bar singing AC/DC’s “Have a Drink on Me.” Fancy cocktails, locally brewed beer and hip wine spots are all the rage — particularly in Downtown Boise, which sometimes feels like one big happy hour. At least one new brewery is really happy. Bend, Ore.based 10 Barrel Brewing Co. opened in Boise last year and already is dominating Best of Treasure Valley’s brewski categories, topping Best Brewery and Best Brewpub/Alehouse. To be a good sport, maybe 10 Barrel should buy all

its competitors a beer? “I like that idea,” 10 Barrel business partner Garrett Wales says with a laugh. “I like getting together and drinking anytime!” Wales says he’s grateful for the reception the Valley has given 10 Barrel, but the key to success is straightforward. “The biggest thing we hang our hat on is quality of beer, quality of food and quality of service.” Speaking of quality: Highly awarded Barbacoa — known for special “ice-tinis” served in a frozen glass — took top honors in the Best Cocktails category. Tequila! Cafe Ole earned top prize for Best Margarita, which begs the question: Is the marg really that amazing, or is it the Wednesday 2-for-1 special that voters loved so much? (Answer: Probably a little of both.)

There’s no doubt that quantity can be as important as quality. Case in point: very-cool newbie Bodovino, which won Best Wine List despite the fact it doesn’t have a traditional wine list. What it does have is a massive, accessible selection of wines that you can taste via small, machinedelivered pours. Wine aficionados adore it. Oh, and the morning after? Time for a bloody mary brunch! Voters prefer the variety of zesty styles concocted at Bardenay. Owner Kevin Settles says the secret is in nuance and spices, “the type of pepper you put in it, things like that.” Then again, he’s not exactly a card-carrying Bloody Buddy. Settles credits his bartender, Craig West, for the expert craftsmanship. “I was traumatized by tomato juice as a kid,” Settles admits, “so I don’t drink them.”

SERVICES Trial lawyer David Leroy has handled thousands of prosecutions and defenses, and also has expertise in business, governmental and family law.

BY ZACHARY KYLE zkyle@idahostatesman.com

Do you need a high-quality accountant to rescue you from your receipt stacks next April? How about a dependable auto repair shop to fix that broken taillight that you probably could fix yourself but have neglected for nine months? How about an excellent attorney to help with that trial or divorce? We’ve got you covered. Many of the Services categories were won by narrow margins, but Treasure Valley voters also handed out several lopsided victories. Idaho Central Credit Union — the largest state-chartered bank or credit union — ran away with Best Bank, the services category that received the most votes. The category receiving the second-most attention of voters was — wait for it — Best Dry Cleaners. Bairds Dry Cleaners and its five Valley locations cleaned up. Bairds, it seems, has picked up more than a few loyal customers

since opening its first shop on the corner of 8th and Fort streets in 1916. Other winners taking their categories by a margin of more than 10 percent were State Farm for Best Insurance Agency and Mister Car Wash for Best Car Wash. Best Family Doctor was a squeaker, with only a handful of votes separating the winning Dr. Wajeeh Nasser from the silver and bronze medalists. Best Law Firm winner Leroy Law Office took No. 1 in a similarly competitive race. Voters favored national chains in the Best Place for Free Wi-Fi category. Starbucks emerged victorious, while No. 2 Flying M was the only local business to place. However, voters went old-school Boise by picking The Grove Hotel — and its Downtown location with fine dining at Emilio’s Restaurant — for Best Hotel. We Idahoans are married to the outdoors. So it makes perfect sense that readers selected the Idaho Botanical Garden as Best Wedding Reception Venue.

hen it comes to making themselves or their pets look good, voters had a hard time picking favorites. Razor-thin margins separated many winners. Locally owned businesses dominated among spas and hair salons, while national chains beat out competitors for Best Pet Grooming, Best Men’s Haircut and Best Massage. Two Rivers Salon and Spa in Eagle, a first- and thirdplace winner, calls itself “the spa by the river.” Two Rivers has six massage and body-treatment rooms, four esthetician rooms, eight mani-pedi stations and two rooms where couples or friends can get side-by-side facials or massages. With 49 years in the Treasure Valley, Best Hair Salon winner Graeber & Company knows how to wow customers. Stylist-owner Odell England says the salon’s popularity comes not just from its quality, but from community involvement including volunteer work for Idaho Shake-

speare Festival, Boise Contemporary Theater and Opera Idaho. “It’s in our mission statement that people that work here have to do three community projects a year — and the ones in the orange vests along the highway do not count!” he adds with a laugh. Eagle Day Spa, a second-and third-place winner, offers skin peels, facials, massages and waxes. It also has airbrush spray tanning for those who want a summer glow without the sun damage, and it sells laser tattoo removal and other laser skin treatments. Panache Hair Studio and Day Spa, a second-place winner in two categories, supplements its usual salon-spa fare with daily yoga classes, private yoga sessions and yoga for pregnant women. It also offers fitness classes. But for Treasure Valley residents looking for more than yoga, the YMCA took Best Gym honors. When it comes to healthy living and fitness, there isn’t much that the YMCA doesn’t do. With four massive gyms, the Y doesn’t just have ellipticals and treadmills; it also of-

fers weight loss and nutrition services, swimming and a slew of group exercise classes. Plus, it has child care and after-school and before-school programs. And the Downtown Boise YMCA is probably the only place in Idaho with a dragon water fixture at the kiddie pool. But what sets the Treasure Valley Family YMCA apart financially is the discounts it offers to individuals and families with low incomes. For a men’s haircut, voters prefer Sport Clips. The sports-themed hair salon franchise has five Treasure Valley salons and offers an “MVP Experience” that crams a shampoo and scalp massage, steamed towel wrap and haircut into 20 minutes. Pet owners prefer Petco when it comes to getting their animal companions groomed. The full-service package includes “a 15-minute brush-out, ear cleaning, nail trim, bath with natural shampoo, blow-dry, haircut and spritz. Add a Spa Works package to your dog’s groom for extra pampering.” Hey, can humans qualify for that, too?

SHOPPING Load up. Voters love WinCo for its pricing and no-frills approach.

N

BY AUDREY DUTTON adutton@idahostatesman.com

ewcomers made a strong showing this year among shoppers, as specialty grocer Trader Joe’s and floral designer Flowers at Will took third-place honors in their categories after being open for a matter of months — not years or decades. Some local giants beat out national and global companies that have stores all over the Valley, too. Fast-growing Boise-based discount grocer WinCo is known for a few things. It’s often cheaper than its competitors, and WinCo isn’t shy about proving as much: It hangs price-comparison signs over its most competitively priced products. WinCo’s employee-owned structure has created some millionaire cashiers and a high retention rate among staff. And the nofrills approach — customers bag their own groceries and can’t use credit cards — helps keeps prices low. Nampa-based Zamzows and its catchy radio ads may lead you to believe its bread and butter is its exhaustive inventory of natural lawn-care and garden supplies. But fans know Zamzows also carries pet food and supplies —

3. TRADER JOE’S 300 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, 336-7282 traderjoes.com

enough to win Best Pet Store. The 76-year-old retailer has its own brand of dog food, cat food and treats, such as Grandma Z’s beef and potato dog treats. Among the retailer’s products is Zamzows Spot Be Gone, an additive for dog food or water that the company says will neutralize dog urine that creates conspicuous dead spots all over the lawn. The Best Shoe Store wasn’t a shoe store at all: Dillard’s is a department store with a popular shoe section. Major retailer DSW — whose Boise store opened fairly recently — is more like a vast shoe emporium and took a close second. Tucked away in a shopping center on Fairview west of Locust Grove in Meridian, Kidz Again beat out strong competitors for both Best Children’s Clothing Store and Best Consignment Shop. The store buys and sells clothing, toys and baby equipment. It knows its target market: parents with fast-growing kids. Kidz Again will pay money for outgrown onesies, then its customer can turn right around and buy a toddler outfit with the cash. Need transportation to get there? Voters prefer to buy cars at Bronco Motors.
