Origin of Charollais Sheep The breed originated in the Saone et Loire district of France. In the early 19th century the local breeds were crossed with Robert Bakewell’s Dishley or Leicester. From then on the breed remained pure but it was not until 1963 that it was actually named Charollais after the town of Charolles from where the French flock book is now run. Charollais sheep have even more to offer. Commercial lamb producers will become more focused on the following issues: Easy lambing: when lambs per acre count and a live lamb is vital. Difficult lambings from other terminal sires are expensive. The lighter skeletal structure of Charollais ensures an easy stress free birth for ewe and lamb, resulting in a very active lively lamb that’s ready to suckle. Charollais are also ideal for crossing with ewe lambs. Days to slaughter: are reduced by excellent growth rates, and suit any system.

Kill out %: due to a lighter skeleton as opposed to other terminal sire the lean meat content of a carcass is higher = more eeeees. Stamp Progeny: Commercial lambs sired by a pedigree Charollais Ram are easily recognised and command a superior price in the sale ring. Markets: can be easily met by the breed as lambs flesh easily without going over fat at any weight. Value for Money: a Charollais Ram excels at work and will definitely serve more than his fair share of ewes! Added Value: to lambs out of hill ewes. A rapidly increasing market for Charollais Rams with more and more demand for this cross. As a breed, we look forward to future and the realisation for commercial farmers that they cannot be without a pedigree Charollais Ram.

Guide To Buying Pedigree Charollais Breeding Stock Points to Consider: • The sheep identity number and registration card and genotype certificate are correct • Teeth are correct • The body is well grown. Wedge shaped, long with wide loin, well muscled firm gigots forming bridge over hocks • Head should be broad with some fine pale pinkygrey cover •Wool should be fine, short

and dense • L egs straight, medium boned, free from wool • Pasterns short and upright • F eet should be straight and well formed •H igh Euro-star value with high accuracy • The Sheep should stand well with good alert headcarriage and move straight • Testicles should be even and of good size • The udder must be sound

• Sheep sourced from society sales Undesirable Points: • Narrow pointed shoulders • Dips or humps in the back • Black or brown spots bigger than a €2 coin • Excessive strong bone • Very white face • Excessive wool on the head • Soft or long-sloping pasterns • Cow-hocked legs • Bowed Legs

Cork Brothers reign Supreme at Charollais Premier The first National Sale of the Irish Charollais Sheep Society, the Bimeda sponsored Premier Show & Sale was held on Saturday 29th July at Tullow Mart. A sales ring that was packed to capacity throughout most of the day saw a strong demand across both Pedigree and Commercial sectors. A clearance rate of 85% was recorded across all sections from those offered for sale which is a significant rise on previous years Mr. Bryan Evans, formerly of the UK Penrhos Flock had the difficult job of judging an excellent show of sheep that were presented to him earlier in the day. After calculated deliberations Mr. Evans found his Female Champion and eventual Supreme Champion in a very catchy ewe lamb sired by Carriganeela Cracker from the flock of Jim & Frampton Jeffrey, Co. Cork. She later sold to the Bolinaspect flock of Michael O’Neill Co. Wexford for €1200. The Male Champion and later would be the Reserve Supreme Champion of the Sale was selected from the Ardcath pen of Eugene O’Sullivan from Co. Meath. This commanding son of Ballyhibben Berlusconi went under the hammer and was purchased for €2000 by Drew Cowan from Co. Down. The first class of the morning was the judging of the hogget ewes. A stylish daughter bred by Co. Wexford breeder Sarah O’Neill, a daughter of Ballyhibben Olympic Gold took the red rosette and later she sold to Dessie Graham Co. Donegal

for €720. Jim & Frampton Jeffrey took the blue rosette with a daughter of Rockvilla Parisse, Aidan Loftus later purchased her for €700. For the second time in the top three the 3rd placed position went to Co. Wexford with a daughter of Lisfuncheon Sambo from the flock of June Harper. Overall the ewes averaged €615 which is up €47 on last year. In the ewe lamb class following the first placed Jeffrey Bros was Eamon Quinlivan from Co. Clare with a Ringclare Dynamite daughter. Co. Carlow buyer Robert Moore later gave her a home for €800. Third position went to Andrew O’ Reilly with a daughter of Highfield Pistol which sold to Dessie Graham from Donegal for €460. Another ewe lamb which attracted a lot of attention was Lot 22, owned by Carlow breeder Joe Nolan. She was sired by Rockvilla Oscar and was snapped up by David Power for €760. The average price for ewe lambs was €476 which again shows an increase of €35 on 2016. The strongest and most competitive class of the day was the tightly fought Ram Lamb class, Mr. Evans found his 1st placed son of Ballyhibben Berlusconi that later was awarded Reserve Supreme Champion. The Jeffrey brothers from Cork were again in the rosettes when their lamb from the same sire as the Female Champion, Carrignageela Cracker was second placed, Hannah Heffernan from Stradbally Co. Laois later ensured he was moving up the Country! However, notably

20 | IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2018 the top selling price of the day went to Richard Kenny from Co. Galway with a son of Bawnard Carousel. He was purchased by Drew Cowan from Co. Down for €2900. Overall ram lambs had an average selling price of €787 with an 87% clearance. In the final class of the day, the Hogget ram class Simon Brown from Graiguenamanagh Co. Kilkenny took first place with a son of Cloghala Jeremy. Simon also took second position with another son of Cloghala Jeremy. These later sold to James Kiernan from Co. Westmeath for €720 and to Patrick Kehoe also from Co. Westmeath for €600 respectively. Jim & Frampton Jeffrey continued their winning ways by picking up the yellow third placed rosette with a son of Parkgare Pure Power who later sold to Joseph Gahan for €520. Hogget rams sold to an average of €600. Other leading prices included, Lot 37 a son of Tullyear Perfection bred by Pa Whyte selling for €1000 to Dessie Graham. Pa Whyte then returned by purchasing Lot 55 sired by N8 Didlier from Thomas Murphy for €1750. Lot 75 by Ringclare Dynamite, bred by Eamon Quinlivan sold fo €1020.

Next up was Michael Power selling a son of Casteulla Figurehead to James Walsh for €1350. Gerry and Dympna Grogan then sold a D817014 a son of Blakeney Oscar to Finbarr Godfrey for €1050. Lots 108 and 109 saw M, D & J Miley selling sons of Wernfawr Red Bull and Rhaeadr Orlando for 1150 and 1300 to Douglas Shakleton and Thomas McCormack respectively. Another top price is accrediated to E&P O’ Gorman from Co. Tipperary with a notary son of Knockcroghery Constable selling for €1400 to Peter Hennessey. David Mawhinney then purchased Lot 122 from the pen of Kieran Forde for €1140. Hannah Heffernan from Co. Laois who earlier also purchased the second placed ram lamb from J&F Jeffrey then acquired Lot 130 from Co. Cork breeder Edward Buckley for €1220. J&F Jefffrey then continued their successful day by selling their final Lot, Lot 138 for 1320 to Kieran Forde. The final sale of the day was the only Senior Ram catalogued. The very successful Carriganeela Cracker who earlier sired the Supreme Champion of the Sale was sold to the Saddle Hill flock of James Murphy, Co. Kilkenny for €2000

All Ireland Championships 2017 Athlone Show in the heart of Ireland was the chosen location for the 2017 All Ireland Championships on Sunday 25 of June. The sun shone in temperate conditions, ideal for the job in hand of exhibiting the top quality Pedigree Charollais stock that were presented to the capable eye of Mr. William McAllister, of the Artnagullion Charollais flock from Northern Ireland. Six classes were judged beginning with the Senior Ram. What an accolade this proved to be for Liam Conway, June Charollais who swept the boards with 1st, 2nd and 3rd platings. In recognition of a fine exhibit of a Shearling ram put forward the red rosette was awarded to mr frank jordan. Finally M, D& J Miley claimed title to the ram lamb class with a son of Logue Durno Oprah who in the next class, Aged Ewe also topped her class. Next up for the ladies was the Shearling ewe and Willie found his girl with a classy gimmer sired by lonehead power house bred & exhibited bymr richard allen Finally the ewe Lamb Class was awarded to m,d&j miley The highlight of the day and what anticipation was building to was the judging of the Championship. The winner of the previous two supreme champion titles in 2016 & 2015, Logue Durno Oprah most definitely lived up to her American superstar namesake by breeding the Supreme Champion for 2017, a Ram Lamb sired by rheardr orlando exhibited by M,D & J Miley. This creates a first for any Charollais breeder in the history of the Society by taking the Supreme Champion title and the RDS Champion of Champion Award for three

Vice Chair Stewart Thompson making a presentation to our judge William McAllister

consecutive years. The Reserve Champion was awarded to Richard Allen with his hogget ewe After all the formality’s of the day all present enjoyed a barbeque hosted by the Society to round off a superb day for the Society.

For the 2017/2018 CPT, there was 5 Charollais rams used to Artificially Inseminate 364 ewes, across 3 flocks. The 5 rams Sired 535 lambs between them. Daughters from these rams will be retained within the CPT flocks upon which they were used, and the performance of these ewes will be recorded in future years – all of this data will continually feed into the €uroStar evaluations of these rams and all of his relations within the Charollais breed for years to come.

Charollais Sired CPT Lambs 2018. Information collected from these lambs is contributing to their Sires €uro-Star Evaluations.

CPT Ram Selection Each year Sheep Ireland aim to select 5/6 Charollais Rams to use in the CPT. Sheep Ireland try to select rams that are, or will be highly influential within the breed. Sheep Ireland invite the Charollais society to select potential rams for the CPT going forward. Sheep Ireland would also encourage breeders to put forward rams for the CPT. It is a great way to increase the accuracy % of a flock’s genetic evaluations.

Genetic Linkage Flock linkage or flock connection refers to the genetic connectivity (similar bloodlines) between LambPlus performance recording flocks. Genetic linkage is crucial for genetic evaluation as it the only way to fairly compare performance between different flocks. Genetic linkage needs to be kept up-to-date: a guideline for breeders would be to make sure they use a linked ram at

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2018 | 39 least every 3 years. There are a few different options for an ‘unlinked’ flock to become ‘linked’. The breeder can share a ram with another ‘linked’ flock with in the same year. A breeder can buy some in-lamb ewes (i.e. ewes are in lamb to a sire that will be linked that year), or a breeder can AI some ewes to a ram which has already been used by another ‘linked’ breeder in the same year.

Sheep Ireland to host Charollais Flockbook For 2018, an agreement has been made that Sheep Ireland will host the Irish Charollais Sheep Society Flockbook on its database. Sheep Ireland are looking forward to working with the Charollais society across all the various initiatives within the national breed improvement programme, helping to maximise the genetic gain being made for the benefit of Irish sheep farmers using Charollais Genetics. This is a huge step forward for the Charollais breed in terms of genetic gain, as Sheep Ireland will be able to fill in blanks in ancestry that before were not known. This will help to increase the accuracy % of performance recorded Charollais sheep.

What does this mean for breeders? There are many benefits for Charollais breeders of Sheep Ireland hosting the Charollais Flockbook. Breeders can now Birth Notify their lambs online, which eliminates the need to fill in Birth Notification sheets. The benefits for LambPlus Breeders are two-fold, because once they submit their lambing information for LambPlus, their lambs will automatically become Birth Notified with the Charollais Society. Breeders will also have the ability to make online Pedigree requests for the lambs that they wish to register. Breeders and potential customers will have access to an Online Flockbook, where they can access the ancestry of all animals and the Genetic Indexes of performance recorded animals. This function will no doubt assist breeders when selecting new breeding stock, or Sires for AI.

Charollais Sheep making Genetic gain!!

Terminal and Replacement index genetic trends for performance recorded Irish Charollais sheep in recent years

It is encouraging to see that the Charollais breed are making Genetic Gain. This is a sign that breeders are putting more faith in the €uro-Star evaluations, and the number of commercial farmers seeking high index rams is also on the rise. Although the rate of genetic gain is steady, in order to maximise genetic gain, it is important that high index sires are promoted across the breed society. It is also worth noting that a team of rams should be used in order to protect against the movements of an individual animal’s evaluations.

Hall of Fame Massive Congratulations to Robin Darker from all in the Charollais Sheep Society Proud day for you and your family.

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2018 | 41 In the early 90’s, I first met Marion and Fergus Lysaght, when they had just imported some Charollais Ewes from France. They were very excited about their purchase’s and I eventually got the bug and bought my first ewe lambs from Derek Steen, who then farmed in Northern Ireland, I then went to the U.K., where I picked up a few ewes, that I thought were ok, but they proved not so good. Derek introduced me to Philip Allen, he advised me buy ewes in Cumbria and I got a few, from that, which proved to be good. Philip rang shortly after words, to say his Father died and the entire flock was for sale. Money was tight, but I went over and bought them all and that is where I started from. I have had success at The All Ireland and top prize at The Premier Sale and female champions at The Premier Sale. I was elected to the committee in the 90’s and that is where I met some people who are still my friends to this day. I have served as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer, and found it all exciting and a pleasure to work with most of them. We had trips to the Royal Highland and the Royal Stoneleigh and while the shows were very good, the evening entertainment

and story telling was something else. I have witnessed a lot of changes in the Breed, some for the better and some not so good. We did some early lamb inspections as well, most places we were made very welcome and some not so welcome. We went to the West of Ireland, to inspect some sheep and every where we went the Whiskey was opened and my driver said you could not insult the people by not having a drink. We finished up leaving a house in Mayo at about 3am. To get back to the task, but we had some great craic. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Society all the best for the future, it is a lot of harder work now to run a Society now, than it was in my time. I would advise any breeders, who are not satisfied with the way things are going, to put themselves forward for a couple of years and see how easy it is. Yours Robin Darker

42 | IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2018

B54 Slievebawn Charollais flock Slievebawn Charollais flock was established in 1990 with the purchase of a ewe lamb from the A2 Cloghala flock. Later that year there were four more foundation females sourced from Northern Ireland. The first sire was purchased from the Deerpark flock of the late Edwin Kelso. The flock grew steadily by carefully selecting our own ewe lambs yearly while adhering to a strict culling policy until we got to about 50 breeding females which are now 100% homebred. I served on the society committee for a number of years and was the society chairman for 4 years, during that time I had the privilege of meeting and working with fellow breeders and enjoyed this time thoroughly. The first success for the flock was winning the All Ireland ewe lamb class in 1994 and 1995 with two homebred lambs. The flock took part in the sire reference scheme from its offset which enabled us to import semen from top sires in the UK and France which has been a great benefit to the flocks successes in the past and hopefully into the future. In 1998 we won the ram lamb class at the world shearing championship in Gorey and he then went on to win the sire reference class at the Premier Sale and sell to a top price on the day of £1400 to established Cork breeder Joe Philpott. Showing has been a huge part of the Slievebawn flock since our establishment

also promoting the breed and what’s good about it, the main reason we show at agricultural shows throughout the country is to meet and interact with customers and we use it as our shop window for selling breeding rams. We have won numerous championships including Tullamore Show and winning the overall champion at the premier sale in 2007 with a ram lamb who sold to established breeder Oliver Carty from Co. Meath. We have sold many rams over the years to breeders and one to mind was a Ram lamb sold to the Blakeney flock of the Forde Family, “Slievebawn Misty Man” which was successful on both showing and breeding in their flock producing numerous champions for them. Most of our sales now take place at home to local repeat customers some going back as far as 1991 when we bred our first rams, this is our most important market which we breed and produce for and it is very encouraging when local farmers take you to their pen of lambs at local marts after topping the sale with Charollais cross lambs bred by a Slievebawn sire. It shows we are doing something right. In the past 28 years we constantly strive to keep to the original Charollais characteristics of medium sized well muscled tight skinned sheep. On a social aspect the breed has gained us many friends for life that we would have never met only for the sheep. I would like to take

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2018 | 43 this opportunity to thank all our customers over the years and hopefully into the future for their loyalty and repeat custom. We also now breed pedigree Angus and Shorthorn cattle which the interest of breeding pedigree stock was stemmed from our pedigree sheep flock.

Many thanks to all and we wish everyone a successful show and sales year ahead. Frank, Geraldine, David and Alan Gibbons.

Charollais in Wicklow. My brother Jimmy and I were born on to a dairy and beef farm in West Wicklow. Our parents worked very hard in trying times to make a living and rear a family of five. About 35 years ago we decided to diversify using Suffolk rams and Cheviot ewes. We found this to be fairly successful but it did not take us long to realise that we needed to do a lot of fencing as sheep being sheep they enjoyed travelling out to meet the neighbours. After some years we changed our females to Suffolk cross Cheviot and still retained our Suffolk rams. We found that some of the lambs were prone to very dirty back ends. We then bought a couple of Charollais rams and found that their lambs were very clean, extremely easy to lamb and very quick to get up to suck, which in our country this was needed as at that time as all our ewes lambed outside. We also noted that the Charollais cross lambs came into good weights quickly and a local lamb buyer would come to buy them and give us a good premium for them. We keep about 200 ewes on a mixed type of farm land, some of which is wet, some good and dry land and some in the foot hills of the Wicklow Mountains. We also keep about 100 sucklers and keep the calves to sell as strong stores. We use the hill land for summer grazing. We recently erected a shed but this was more for the humans than the sheep.
