† CONNER

Katherine Ann (Werner) Conner, of Ionia passed away, March 3, 2019, with her family by her side. She was the first child born to the late Louis and Annabelle (Fandel) Werner, June 4, 1942, in Portland, MI. During her childhood, her mother Annabelle passed away. Louis then married Gertrude (Wohlscheid) Werner, who Kay came to love as a mother. Kay graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School, Ionia, MI in 1960 and completed a cosmetology license in 1961. She went on to help women feel confident about their hair styles for decades to come. She married Samuel James Conner in 1963. They lived and raised their children in Ionia MI, spending many winters, after retirement, in Arizona. Kay is survived by her husband and their three children: Tina (Scott) Conner-Wellman; Samuel Eric (Heidi) Conner, and Troy (Sherri) Conner. Her grandchildren were her joy: Sarah Conner, Alex Conner-Wellman, D’laney Conner-Wellman, Jessa Delo, and Makala Delo

with great-grandchildren Vayla & Opal. Kay is survived by her sisters and brother: Jane Emelander, Gerald (Nancy) Werner, Alice (Dick) Foreback, Rose (Glenn) Smejkal, Marlene (Gary) Chartrand, and Mary (Kenn) Swick as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lucrecia (Conner) Dowsett, and step-brothers, Gary (Gail) Wohlscheid, Dave (Shirley) Wohlscheid, Tom (Lucy) Wohlscheid, and Steve (Gail) Wholscheid. She is preceded in death by her parents and her aunt, Eloise (Fandel) Gilbert. Faith was a cornerstone of Kay’s life that brought her comfort and strength. She always sought to help others in meaningful ways, was a proud volunteer, generous with her time to individuals and causes. Friends and family were always happy when Kay would deliver something she made specially for them. Her lifestyle & values created strong friendships with many people she held close to her heart, including Rosemary Reams, Nancy Haight, Camren Kring, her YMCA swim group, Arizona friends, the ladies group from LeValley church, Valley View friends, and neighboring Adams family; Liz, Shaundra, Tucker, Kelly, Josh and Tracy. Kay enjoyed traveling, motorcycle riding and ice cream. She loved natural landscapes, flowers, birds and butterflies and always took time to appreciate them wherever she found herself. In recent years Kay was active with her swimming group, volunteered with IM Kids 3rd Meal and Christian Services, and enjoyed games of euchre. Her grandchildren hold fond

memories of baking cookies, games, reading books together, learning to knit, wagon rides, pumpkin carving and bon fires. Her family will carry on her legacy of being good to their friends and neighbors, striving for success in each endeavor, and maintaining family values and traditions, offering each other love, strength and support, just the way she taught them. Per Katherine’s wishes, there will be no visitation services nor a gathering after mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be announced and celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers a contribution in her name to SSPP Church or School or a charitable organization of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com. † WHEELOCK

How drivers can make road trip season more eco-friendly Many drivers anxiously await the arrival of spring, when they can rev their engines and enjoy the burgeoning greenscapes synonymous with the season. Though the colors of fall foliage might be more closely associated with road trips, many drivers enjoy the first few warm days of spring when they get a chance to hit the open road with their windows down for the first time in months.

Driving is not always the most eco-friendly activity. However, there are various ways to enjoy spring road trips without compromising the environment. • DO NOT IDLE YOUR VEHICLE. When engines are running but cars are not moving, this is referred to as “idling.” It’s hard to blame drivers for idling their vehicles in winter, when many motorists try to warm up their engines and their vehicles’ interiors so their morning commutes are as comfortable as possible. Idling cars might not be moving, but they are still burning fuel, meaning drivers who routinely idle their vehicles are adversely affecting fuel efficiency. It’s also important to note that idling is no longer necessary in modern vehicles. That’s because the electronic fuel injection systems in today’s cars require just a few seconds to get full oil pressure throughout the engine. Such systems were not present in older vehicles. • TAKE IT EASY ON THE ROAD. Road trips tend to be more enjoyable and are certainly safer when drivers take their time and don’t rush to their destination. And driving slowly happens to be more eco-friendly as well. According to the online automotive resource Edmunds.com, gently gaining speed is much more fuel-efficient than accelerating quickly. Always obey speed limits and avoid quickly accelerating when stoplights turn green. • EMPTY THE TRUNK. During

winter, many drivers understandably carry some extra items in their trunk to account for inclement weather. Keeping ice scrapers, extra coolant or even a snow shovel in the trunk might make sense for drivers who live in regions that routinely encounter heavy snowfall. When spring arrives, drivers should remove any unnecessary items from their trunks. Such items will increase the weight of the vehicle, thereby reducing its fuel efficiency. Athletes and outdoors enthusiasts should also remove golf bags and sporting equipment from their trunks when taking trips where such items won’t be needed. • DON’T TOP OFF AT THE GAS PUMP. Many drivers, especially

those on road trips who want to avoid extra tops at the filling station, top off their gas tanks when nozzles shut off automatically. Such a practice is harmful to the planet and may not be doing your vehicle any favors, either. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes gasoline needs some extra room in gas tanks to expand. Without that extra room, the gas may evaporate into the vehicle’s vapor collection system, adversely affecting emissions and potentially damaging the vehicle. Motorists can employ several simple strategies to make spring road trip season more eco-friendly.

Tire maintenance a key component of spring check-up When warm weather arrives, many people enjoy a collective sigh of relief. Just as people welcome the end of the cold, snow and ice, cars and trucks also can benefit from more moderate temperatures. Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. INFLATION LEVELS Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Esurance states that winter weather can cause tire pressure reduction at about one PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy, so drivers may even save a little money by inflating their tires.

TIRE ROTATION/REALIGNMENT Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to get their opinion on how to remedy the situation. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Misaligned wheels can cause handling problems, like the car “pulling” to one side. TIRE REPLACEMENT Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires. Failing to replace old, worn down tires can increase the risk of automobile accidents. THOROUGH CLEANING Once tires are inspected and possibly serviced or replaced, treat the car or truck to a washing and thorough detailing. This will help tires shine and get the vehicle road-ready for spring trips.

How to recognize potential brake problems Maintaining a vehicle is more than just a way to protect one’s financial investment. Vehicle maintenence can protect against accidents and make the road safer for drivers and their passengers as well as their fellow motorists. Fully functioning brakes are an important component of automotive safety. Bad brakes are particularly notorious for rear-end collisions. Faulty, worn brake lines, antilock brake system malfunctions and worn brake pads and discs are some potential brake problems. It is important that motorists learn to recognize the first symptoms of brake trouble so they can address issues before they

put drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident or injury. UNUSUAL NOISES: Screeching, grinding, rubbing, and highpitched sounds are common indicators that brake pads, rotors and other parts of the braking system need attention. PULLING: If the car pulls to one side when applying the brakes, this may indicate brake pad linings are wearing down unevenly. A brake adjustment may be necessary. Pulling also may be indicative of an object or debris caught in the brake fluid. LESS RESPONSIVE: If when pressing on the brake pedal the brakes just do not seem to be as effective as they once were,

or it is necessary to press the pedal harder for the brakes to engage, there may be a brake fluid leak or an air leak. Check under the vehicle to see if any fluids are pooling. VIBRATIONS: Certain vibrations may indicate brake issues. Vibrations also may indicate tires
