† HARDER
Carol May (Wingeier) Harder, 94, of Ionia MI. passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024. Born on May 22, 1930, the daughter of Carl and May (Velzy) Wingeier, she was known for her warmth, strength, generosity, and unyielding positivity.
Carol graduated from Ionia High School and married her high school sweetheart of 76 years, Christian Harder, on Dec. 10, 1947. Carol and Chris were members of the Palo United Methodist Church for many years and served as their Musical Team. Carol also oversaw the Vacation Bible School Program. Among Carol’s most significant accomplishments was raising her children, whom she held as her pride and joy. Carol was a premier organist and played for over 50 years serving Palo United Methodist Church, Belding United Methodist Church, and the First Presbyterian Church of Ionia. In addition to playing the organ, she served as a bookkeeper for their family-run business, Harder & Sons, managed their family farm for many years, and drove buses for Palo Community Schools for a few years. Yet, she always found time to care for her Mother, family, friends, church, and community. To serve is what Carol thought she was meant to do.
Even amidst the challenges life brought her way, Carol never wavered in her compassion for others. As a servant of God, she supported her family and extended a helping hand to anyone in need. Her life served as a testament to her philosophies, “Trust in the Lord and do good,” and “Every day is a kiss from above.” She enjoyed crafting, sewing, shopping trips to Macy’s, following the latest fashion trends, as well as tending to her flowers and garden. She attended “Just Like Home” Adult Daycare where their supportive community enriched Carol’s last days. Her family will reminisce about her delicious dinner rolls and supreme dinner parties for years to come.
Carol will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Christian Harder of Ionia, her 7 children, Craig (Ruth) Harder of Saranac, Carl (Vesta) Harder of Carson City, Stephen (Phyllis) Harder of Florida, Marcia (Darlys) Storjohann of Fenwick, Angela Irene of Fenwick, Samuel Harder of Saranac, Joel (Bridget) Harder of Fenwick, special family friend, Jennifer Hatt of Lansing, her 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is joined in rest by her mother, May (Velzy) Wingeier, her father, Carl Wingeier, and her sisters; Ardith (Charles) Westie, Janice (Jim) Bussard, and Carmen (Ken) Kistner.
A Visitation for Carol will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024 with a Celebration of Life immediately following at 3 p.m. at Lake’s Funeral Home in Ionia with family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Just Like Home” Adult Daycare in Ionia. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com
Carol’s loss is deeply felt by her immense family and all those who knew and loved her. Her memory will continue to live on and inspire strength, resilience, and generosity in those whose lives she touched. Her family is comforted knowing she is accompanying the angels of heaven.

UM Health-Sparrow Ionia recertified as Level IV trauma center
IONIA, MI – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia has been redesignated as a Level IV Trauma Center, reflecting the level of expertise in providing crucial care to patients in the emergency department.
The designation from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is valid through August 2027. UM Health-Sparrow Ionia received its first Level IV certification in 2019. Most Level IV trauma centers are in rural areas, supplementing care within a larger trauma system. Level IV facilities are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and provide initial evaluation, stabilization and diagnostic capabilities for injured patients who need to be transferred to a higher-level trauma center for care.
“Achieving this designation demonstrates how our
hospital excels at caring for trauma patients of all types and has the staff, equipment and expertise necessary to treat the various types of traumatic injuries we encounter in our community,” said Tara Lanz, MSN, RN, emergency department manager at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia.
The designation involves rigorous standards, comprehensive training and the implementation of state-ofthe-art protocols to ensure emergency departments are well-equipped to handle a wide range of traumatic injuries. Elements reviewed include relationships with local EMS, disaster protocols, access to surgical care, transfer agreements for patients needing more comprehensive care, involvement in prevention and outreach programs in the community, an onsite visit from surveyors and more. During this
year’s visit, surveyors found zero deficiencies at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia.
“We are proud of the team members that are involved in our trauma program,” said Brett Reich, D.O., chief of staff and emergency medicine medical director at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia. “There is a lot of hard work that goes into maintaining a trauma program, and the team at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia has certainly demonstrated a pattern of excellence when it comes to providing the highest level of care for the trauma patients in our community.”
For more information about the leading-edge services provided at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia, visit UofMHealthSparrow.org/ Ionia.
Bipartisan coalition calls on House to prioritize patients over pharma profits
Bill co-sponsors Reps. Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Odessa) and Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) are urging their legislative colleagues to support House Bill 5350, a bill to prioritize supporting hospital community need programs over pharmaceutical manufacturer profits. They represent two of the 19 bipartisan co-sponsors of the bill.
The bill would protect healthcare cost-savings received by hospitals through the federal 340B drug pricing program, which allows covered safety net hospitals and other community care organizations to access certain outpatient prescription drugs at discounted prices. Numerous pharmaceutical manufacturers have attempted to place arbitrary limits on hospitals that have been ruled unlawful
by federal agencies.
“During the final days of session, we have the opportunity to prioritize people’s needs ahead of big pharma’s profits,” Farhat said.
“This bipartisan plan has the potential to expand and protect life-saving services in hospitals across our state. Services such as cancer care, prevention, and treatment.”
“The cost savings offered by 340B is vital for small rural hospitals like those in the area I represent,” said Johnsen. “Protecting this program is crucial to maintaining access to care for my constituents. We will lose services if it goes away, and rural Michigan cannot afford that.”
The 340B drug pricing program, created by Congress, has been an integral part of the fabric of healthcare financing since its inception in 1992 and does not rely on taxpayer dollars. Covered safety net providers have been able to drive savings from the program into their communities for more than 30 years, supporting access to care to Michigan’s most vulnerable patients.
“We thank Rep. Farhat for being a champion for our patients. This legislation will have a meaningful impact for Dearborn and all of Michigan,” said Debra Guido-Allen, president of Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital. “As a safety net hospital, the 340B program is a lifeline for affordable medicines as drug makers continue to target this vital program through lawsuits and restrictions, while also raising their prices.”
The 340B drug pricing program was designed to support the healthcare providers who serve patients in the most vulnerable communities with the ability to stretch scarce state and federal resources. Covered entities include
cancer hospitals, children’s hospitals, community health centers and specialty clinics, rural referral centers and sole community hospitals.
“340B savings are incredibly important for the viability of rural healthcare providers,” said Margaret Dimond, regional president of University of Michigan Health, which includes hospitals in Carson City and Ionia. “We appreciate Rep. Johnsen championing this cause and protecting rural healthcare in our community, and we are proud to provide access to care for underserved communities and to share how we are using our 340B funding.”
Pharmaceutical drugs are the most rapidly growing expense for hospitals. As major
purchasers of drugs, hospitals are forced to bear a significant burden of the rising costs.
For the first time in history, the median price of a new drug is $300,000 – more than four times the median annual household income in the U.S. The costs for new drugs launched by pharmaceutical companies rose by 35% from 2022 to 2023.
HB 5350 is awaiting consideration in the House Insurance and Financial Services Committee.
The bill sponsors encourage Michigan citizens to contact their state elected officials to encourage them to support HB 5350 and prioritize community-based healthcare services over pharmaceutical profits.

Merry Christmas and welcome to my kitchen. This month I’m not only posting a couple of easy recipes but I’m also including a simple menu that includes the meats in our Holiday Bundle. This Bundle has the basic, common and popular meats that many families’ use in their meal planning. I try to create simple yet cost effective meat selections when I create meat bundles to meet the needs of today’s busy families. All while keeping family size and most importantly, budgets in mind. Only offering high quality, choice grade meats at an affordable price is the goal, always.
Below are my ideas of how you can make an entire meal with some of the cuts offered and with the exception of the steaks, using only one package of the selected meat at a time for the entire meal – leaving the other one for another meal.
• Delmonico and/or T-Bone steaks, baked potato, crisp green salad and garlic toast.
• Pulled Pork on a bun with BBQ sauce, Mac & Cheese (or baked beans), Chips
• Crockpot Beef Tips using the Boneless Stew meat, noodles and gravy (recipe below), steam cooked sliced carrots
• Crockpot Hawaiian Chicken (recipe below), white rice, steamed broccoli
• Meals from Ground Beef: Tacos, Goulash, Lasagna, Shepards Pie, Poor Man’s Stroganoff, Hamburger Helper, Sloppy Joes, Hamburgers & Fries, Cheesy Hamburger Soup, Chili, etc. You can really stretch hamburger meat to feed a family.
• The bacon and sausage links are traditional breakfast meats but our family loves “breakfast” for dinner too.
• Chili dogs. I use canned chili – no shame in my game. Serve with home fries, or chips.
Wishing you and yours a peaceful, and happy time with family & friends this holiday season!

BEEF TIPS & GRAVY
1 lb Beef stew meat
1 Can cream of mushroom soup
1 packet Au Jus or Brown gravy mix
1 packet Dried Onion Soup mix
1 tbls Browning Seasoning like Kitchen Bouquet (optional)
1 & ½ soup cans of water
1 tbls fresh garlic (Jarlic) or powdered
Salt & Pepper to taste
Place stew beef in crockpot, add rest of ingredients, mix and cook on high 4 hours or low for 6. Serve over noodles.
CROCKPOT HAWAIIAN CHICKEN
1 pkg of Boneless Chicken Thighs
1 cup Pineapple Juice
½ cup brown sugar
1/3 cup Soy sauce
Mix all in crockpot and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. That’s it. Serve over white rice and if you like you can mix the raw broccoli in the last hour or steam it and serve as a side.
