Snow Blower by Simplicity... the compact single-stage snowblower is the smallest,

Option for homeowners with a smaller driveway who live in areas with light snowfall. These snow blowers are equipped with a Briggs & Stratton Snow Series™ Engine, push button electric start (most models) and an auger-propelled drive system, which makes the snow thrower reliable and easy-to-use. As the single-stage snowthrower is propelled forward the auger clears cleanly down to the ground.

Two-stage snowblowers for those facing heavy-duty snow and winter’s most substantial storms. All two-stage, or dual-stage, snowblowers feature a powerful Briggs & Stratton® Engine designed for harsh winter conditions, dual trigger steering and Free Hand™ Control to combine ease-of-use with the snow removal robustness of a professional-grade snow thrower. Twostage snow blowers will not clean down to the ground like a single-stage snow blower, however this makes two-stage snowblowers an ideal choice for those with gravel driveways.

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT

SARANAC. Does it mean anything? There has been a lot of speculation as to the origin of our village’s name.

The land upon which Saranac now lies was purchased in 1836 by Judge Jefferson Morrison who, soon afterwards, sold a portion of the land to some fellow land developers from Detroit (Dwight and Hutchinson). It was agreed that a community would be needed to support the mills planned along Lake Creek, and together they platted out the village.

Who christened the new village and why it was named Saranac, was not recorded – but have you ever noticed that where there is a “hole” in a story, a lot of theories will be offered up.

One such supposition is that Saranac was chosen to associate the history of the land in some way with Native traditions, and the name is of a local tribe’s chief. This could be supported by looking at some of the early street names on the plat: Skutang, Wacoosh, Quiouigoshcum and Ocomess. Or maybe it was a marketing

ploy? To draw settlers to the newly available land by copying successful settlement names from back east.

Judge Morrison was from upstate New York, and in New York state is another Saranac (Saranac Lake) which was first settled in 1819. There, Saranac is named for the Saranac River and purportedly is a word of Mohawk origin (one of the six tribes belonging to the Iroquois confederacy) meaning, “cluster of stars.” However, looking into the history of the region, Saranac could also be attributed to the Algonquian tribes (Abenaki, of which the Iroquois six nations were not part of). It might have been spelled “Sal-a-sa-nac” and meant “staghorn sumac cone river.” Question answered? Possibly, but that would be too easy. In the 1941 Saranac History and Directory, put together by F.A. Gib-

son and Kenneth L. Gibson, Publishers of “Advertiser Publishing Co.” a Mrs. L.P. Brock, Hall-Fowler Memorial Library (Ionia, MI) offered her own research results. Mrs. Brock had been approached by some Ionia Free Fair-goers, asking about Saranac’s “The Lone Pine” legend. Apparently, at the foot of a lone pine standing on the ridge on the north bank of the Grand River, across from Saranac, a little girl, named Saranac, was buried. When Morrison, Dwight and Hutchinson were drafting up plans for their new community (1830s), they chose to honor this earlier family by naming the town for their daughter. In the 1940s, she tried to confirm the validity of the legend, which had been heard by quite a few Saranac residents, but no one could vouch for its truth. Not stopping there she felt that the word might be Native American in its origin, due to how Natives typically spelled out their words (Sa-ra-nac), and wrote to Rodney L. NeGake, grandson of Chief Cobmo-sa, and at the time (1941) chief of the Ottawa tribe of Michigan.

His reply, “…I don’t now anything about it, because it is not an Indian (sic) name, but the Indians used to call the city “Ah-Se-nin-Kah-ShkeKob-Ke-Sing” – a word meaning “rock closed” on account of some stones that were under a bridge forming something like a wall.” Leaving no stone unturned (pun intended), Mrs. Brock contacted the New York State Historical Library at Albany (NY) in the chance that it was named for Saranac Lake (NY). In 1941, the answer received back that it was always assumed to be Indian (sic), the meaning given as “river that flows under a rock”, without naming their source. She also discovered that on early French maps of our region of Michigan, it was spelled as “Salasanac,” the same as it was on early maps of upstate New York. Hmmm…. lots to go on, but nothing truly definitive. To me, I like to think Saranac simply means home. Quilling Club

Have you ever heard of Quilling? It is the art of using strips of paper to make different shapes, which can be used to decorate greeting cards, pictures, boxes, and more. The library’s drop-in quilling club will meet on Wednesday, December 11, from 6:30-7:30. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own supplies or use some of ours to work on projects together, show each other new techniques, and share ideas.

CHILDREN’S AND TEEN

LITTLES

• Choo-choo! Roar! Shhhhhh! Get ready to make some noise, Tiny Tots (ages 2 & under) and caregivers! This winter’s storytime session will be anything but quiet while we read, sing, and move our bodies to make all sorts of sounds. Raise a ruckus with Miss Eileen at the library every other Friday at 10:00 am starting January 3. Can’t make it to in-person storytime? Grab one of our monthly caregiver packets and follow along to our storytime videos to create sounds from your own living room! Register beginning Monday, December 16. • 5-4-3-2-1 BLAST OFF with Miss Jamie this winter during storytime! Book Cubs (ages 3-5) and their caregivers will explore planets, stars, astronauts, and aliens! Rocket into space at the library every other Wednesday at 10:00 am beginning January 8. Journey into our galaxy December through February from home by watching our storytime videos. Sign up for Take-and-Make bag supplies starting Monday, December 16.

MIDDLES

• Pick your project! Writers, ages 8-12, will get to choose their own project to work on during Write On!’s winter meetings. Curious about poetry? Want to find a penpal? Feeling crafty about cards? Want to create a comic strip? Always wanted to write a short story? Meetings will be Mondays from 6:00-7:30 pm December 16, January 20, and February 17. Sign up today at the Youth Desk!

• Wintry Birds finds us using different materials to create a fun winter scene featuring brightly colored birds. Middles (ages 6-12) can stop by the Youth Desk starting Friday, December 13 for a Takeand-Make bag.

• Do you have what it takes to be a warrior in this year’s Ionia County Battle of the Books? Read books, answer trivia questions, and have fun, all while competing against other teams. Registration starts on Thursday, January 2 for students in 4th & 5th grade. Sign up as a team of up to 4, or register individually – each team must be led by an adult or teen team leader. Read all 3 battle books and be one of the best at answering book trivia questions to take your team to the final battle between the Ionia County libraries in April. Information and registration sheets can be picked up at the Youth Desk and must be completed by Monday, February 3.

TEEN

• Whether you are an expert sketch artist, a novice, or somewhere in between, PDL’s Teen Art Hour has a December craft for you: Sketching Made Easy! Learn different sketching techniques to draw a picture of a lone wolf or a pair of majestic horses. Our Takeand-Make bags have everything you need. Grab yours at the Youth Desk beginning Monday, December 2. Space is limited to 15 teens, ages 13-18.

• T.A.B., Portland District Library’s Teen Advisory Board, will have their first meeting of the winter quarter Tuesday, December 10 at 6:30 pm in the Quiet Study Room. We are working hard to put together a monthly YouTube newscast! To join the fun, register at the Youth Desk. We welcome all teens, ages 13-18.

ALL-AGES

• We are all about holiday spirit at

the library this December with our Holiday Happenings! Everyone in the family can put their detective skills to the test during “Character Quest” our scavenger-hunt-witha-twist, which runs December 2-21 and will have one youth and one adult prize pack winner each week. We are giving the gift of fine forgiveness this year between December 16-23; simply stop by with your library card! Stop in every Monday December 2, 9, and 16 for a small surprise Take-and-Make craft available at checkout for both adults and youth. Support a staff wish by browsing our wish tree where you can take home an ornament in exchange for a donation. Is your sweet tooth calling? Give into the temptation by grabbing a candy cane from any of our three trees throughout the building. And don’t leave the library without stopping by the front desk for our Holiday Prize Wheel Extravaganza, where every visit between December 9-23 you go home with something new. Happy Holidays from the Portland District Library!

•Brrrrrrr, baby, it’s cold outside! Winter is the perfect time to cuddle up with a blanket in your favorite reading spot for Portland District Library’s Winter Reading Program. Youth readers, ages 18 and under, will be competing for weekly prizes for each age group: Littles (ages 0-5), Middles (ages 6-12), and Teens (ages 13-18).
