What is a Veteran
A Veteran Is Someone Who, at one point, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for an amount of ‘up to and including their life’
In honor of Veterans Day, Pinkney Hill Meats will donate 50% from all retail purchases** on Veterans’ Day to the Ionia County Soldiers & Sailors Relief Fund
(in addition to the 15% discount we offer all Veterans every day) This fund provides financial help and services to our Ionia County Veterans. And on this very special day, we can’t think of a better way to honor our men and women that have served our country.

News from the Depot bytheBoston-SaranacHistoricalSociety
NOVEMBER 11th marks “Veterans Day.” Why is this day special? World War I ended on November 11, 1918, when the Germans and the Allies signed an armistice in Compiègne, France. The armistice declared a ceasefire at 11 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month. Although, the WWI was officially ended by the Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919.
By September 16, 1919, US Congress granted a charter to a patriotic veteran’s organization that was founded by World War I veterans. These veterans were a group of officers in the “American Expeditionary Force” (AEF) who primarily fought alongside Allied troops in France under the command of General John J. Pershing. The name of this newly formed organization? The American Legion.
The local Saranac Legion received its charter on October 4, 1919. At this time there were only 17 members, while nationally there were some 800,000 members enrolled. By December 9, 1919, the mothers, wives, and sisters of the members organized an Auxiliary to the “LeRoy L. Dausman Post No. 175.”
Who was LeRoy L. Dausman? The simple answer is that “Roy” was the first Saranac boy to die on the battle
fields of France. The more poignant answer is that the news of his death was delivered in a letter written by Keith Talcott, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Talcott of Saranac, an excerpt of which follows:
At the front, Oct. 7, 1918 Dear Folks at Home: Have just got back in reserve out of the hottest battle we have been in yet, but I am all safe and sound, thanks to God. I expect we will go back for a rest now for a while. I have some very bad news to tell you this time. Poor old Roy Dausman was killed. There was not a braver or better boy in the army. He was getting his section together, preparing to go over the top. (NOTE: WWI is known for its “trench” warfare, thus “over the top” referred to climbing out of the trench). He was in charge of a platoon, the same as lieutenant. I had seen him but a minute before, but didn’t know about it for half a day or so. You see our barrage had started and we had come a little ways, and had been on a road below a high bank. A big “boche” shell (NOTE: “boche” is a derogatory term used by Allied forces during WWI) lit in the road, not far from him. The rest of the boys haven’t got back from the hospital yet, Jim, Bill, and
Rufus, of course, are in the artillery. John Stair has a job at the casual camp. Ralph Lee is all O.K. (NOTE: in trying to identify “who” Jim, Bill and Rufus might be, and assuming they were Saranac friends of Keith Talcott, I referred to the WWI “Honor Roll” from the Saranac Legion and found possible surnames: Jim, James Jepson, James Felice, or James Stewart; Bill, William Stebbins, William Dawson, or William Greenwalt; Rufus, only one, Rufus Goodnough.)
Keith was writing from the “front,” during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. This was the deadliest campaign in American history, with over 350,000 casualties.
“LeRoy L. Dausman: Sergeant Co. D 126th Infantry, 32nd Division” (November 19, 1894 - October 4, 1918) “Roy” was killed at Argonne Forest, France, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
The battle took place in the Meuse-Argonne region of northeastern France from September 26, 1918 to November 11, 1918, when the Armistice was signed. The offensive involved over a million American soldiers and was the largest operation of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I. It is where LeRoy L. Dausman died, in the Argonne Forest, France.
The Armistice to end WWI was signed the 11th hour, of the 11th
day, of the 11th month. The day of the week? A Monday. The same day of the week we observe “Veterans Day” this year: Monday, November 11, 2024. Follow us on Facebook ™ /Saranac Depot
