‘The quality was just superb. The subtle tones reproduced really well on this very convincing new product.’

Fujifilm Crystal Archive Professional Velvet is an archival C-Type paper with a smooth matt velour finish, giving the look of a fine art reproduction with the longevity and robust handling of a real silver photographic material. Developed for use with all mini labs and medium to large-scale printer systems, Crystal Archive Digital Velvet is a silver halide paper with a naturally warm base and a surface which resists fingermarks. Although resembling matt laminate, Velvet has a rich photographic d-Max and matches the dynamic range of conventional finishes when used with the recommended printer profiles. Its base weight and creasing qualities make it ideal for layflat book production and album covers as well as for boxed, mounted and framed work. It is ideal for exhibition prints in all lighting conditions.

– John Baxter, winner, AoP Shot Up North 27 exhibition

With superb archival permanence, images printed on Crystal Archive Digital Velvet will look as fresh in the future as the day they were taken. Portrait and wedding photographers will find the paper ideally suited for albums and display prints and will love its controlled dynamic range and the subtle palette achieved. This is a paper which merges the feel of the best velvet matt papers of the past, the unique colour gamut of C-Type, and the depth of fine art giclée in a modern material capable of high volume rapid output.

‘‘This new Fujifilm paper could be the missing link for some photographers.’

Special Awards Day guest – Clive Arrowsmith

THE NEW president of MPA for 2016/17, Steve Howdle is a Fellow of the MPA, well-known for his masterclasses in portrait and beauty lighting. Early in his career, he was spotted by the largest hair products brand on the market which needed pictures of perfect styles for their industry awards, packaging and advertising. With his fellow photographer and stylist Stephanie Ann Thornton Steve has been a favourite at The Photography Show demonstrating hair and beauty work on stage. www.thorntonandhowdle.com

AT THE annual awards presentation and dinner held on October 16th 2016, the guest of honour was Clive Arrowsmith, whose book Arrowsmith Fashion Beauty & Portraits was published recently. He was profiled with a cover and portfolio in the September/October edition of Master Photography, interviewed by the MPA’s CEO Clare Louise. To learn more, visit https://clivearrowsmith.org Each year at the awards, the Association looks beyond its own membership to invite a prominent photographer to present more certificates and trophies than they ever imagined could be possible when they agreed to the gig – and that’s after a busy day signing books, giving talks and meeting everyone!

ordan Fraser is an innovator and uses technology to offer unique products to his clients. It may not be apparent from the pictures here where the final use of elements in his timelapse movie shorts are seen as stand-alone stills. On his website, you can play the brief HD clips and see the lighting and clouds develop in a scene where the subject appears to complete the composition. Based in Belfast, Jordan uses the changing light and the scenery of Northern Ireland to best advantage. He is known for his use of hypersync (flash added to outdoor sunshine conditions) to create dramatic lighting effects. In the studio, he works with direct rather than diffused sources, drawing inspiration from movie lighting direction. He’s been successful in the last two years of awards, notable with wedding photography. Jordan has been a professional photographer for eight years

and is a true ‘GP’ – unusually, working in both the wedding and advertising industry. He also has the skills of a news or sports photographer. “We work quickly to capture our signature stunning images of the bride and groom”, Jordan says, “and then we let the bride and groom relax and enjoy their day with their guests and shoot from the background to capture the moments that will make the day unique.” Jordan promotes his professional work with the help of many of the region’s top venues, as he is adept in using websites like Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, 500px and Photoshelter. He’s an expert user of social and all on-line media. You’ll even find him in the Huffington Post as a winner in the 2014 iPhone Photography Awards. BEST ASSOCIATESHIP OF 2016

JASON BANBURY

J

ason Banbury has been a star of the Master Photography Awards – and he’s been under real pressure to get that Associateship (and no doubt beyond) to reflect his success as UK Master Photographer of the Year for for the last two years. His successful submission is not as unusual as it looks, since there’s a strong fine art and historical influence in contemporary photography whether for editorial, commercial or private commissions. Here’s how ‘1645’ came to be produced as a portfolio, in Jason’s words

1645 The year is 1645… King Charles I sits on the throne and civil war rages across the land. Support for the King waivers and so Charles embarks on a tour of the country to muster support. On August 5th, 1645 the King, with his entourage, arrive at Llancaiach Fawr, a fortified Manor House situated on the Welsh Borders, home to Colonel Edward

See: www.jasonbanbury.com

42 • MPA MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL 2017

Pritchard and his Family. This panel of work portrays characters of the King's retinue and the Llancaiach Household during his visit at this turbulent time. Historical accuracy has played a large part in the creation of the images; posing has been deliberately choreographed to celebrate the period, the individual and their role in society. Typical of the time, the use of symbology is woven into many of the portraits and careful consideration has been given to detailing be it the garment or the simplest placement of a finger upon a book. Fine food and entertainment are displayed in the imagery along with scenes that depict position, military importance, security and loyalty. An example is how the soldiers are placed at the outer corners of the panel (as presented to the judges) in a strong protective stance. The painterly posing and placement of the period is at times, in deliberate contrast to contemporary photographic posture.

MEET THE ICONIC COLLECTION OF NEW

Style & Influence It's been intriguing learning more about the period both from the re-enactors themselves and through my own research. Wonderful stories and details have emerged through this journey and I have tried to immerse historical accuracy into the images. For example, a piece of shirt emerging from an open button is there most certainly as a statement – that the character was of means sufficient to sport fresh white linen! My influences for this collection have been varied: some quite simply come from within, but inspiration has also evolved through observing the love of colour and light in the works of seventeenth-century Masters Johannes Vermeer and Diego Velazquez. I have also become something of an admirer of William Dobson, court artist to Charles I. Dobson documented, via the medium of portraiture, throughout this monumental period of British history. A strong aspect of his portraiture was never to artificially flatter his subjects. I feel an alignment to this in my own work.

The challenges I felt it important to push boundaries for my Associate Panel. I wanted to embrace a different style and genre and move away from my `comfort zone'. Creating 1645 provided all of this and so much more! Firstly, in order to create and portray the story, I left the comfort of my studio environment and shot entirely on location. As a result I was faced with challenging and fluctuating light conditions (something of an understatement!) along with time constraints, as the House opened daily at 10am to the general public, so providing the narrowest of shoot times to work in. The characters depicted in the work are not models, they are a mixture of historical interpreters, volunteers and hobbyist re-enactors. I couldn't have wished

for more enthusiasm from my portraiture subjects, but for most, posing was a new experience and I found the level of direction I gave to be therefore heightened – as was the quest to achieve a noted painterly style. The portraiture collection was shot over a seven-month period starting on the coldest of days in February 2016 and ending with the King's arrival in August. So, in summary: no models, no make-up artist,

no studio, limited lighting and considerable time constraints. 1645 has indeed been a true challenge, but also a fabulous opportunity for personal development and I feel richer as a portrait photographer for making this journey. Creating this body of work has involved the time and goodwill of so many individuals and organisations and I felt it appropriate to acknowledge this here – Llancaiach

Fawr Manor & their team of historical interpreters; The English Civil War Society; National Museum of Wales, St Fagans; The Sealed Knot, Sir Henry Vaughan's Company & Colonel Charles Gerrard's Company; Past Pleasures Ltd. Also Martin GrahameDunn, my MPA Mentor and, of course, Lorna – at my side for every shot, armed always with encouragement and enthusiasm.

David Calvert’s Black on White series was awarded the Best Associateship in 2015, and a full reproduction of the set in the Masters of Photography 2016 annual. At the time he was advised that substituting a few of the images would have been likely to lift the panel to Fellowship level, and in 2016 he returned with a revised set. Since we have already reproduced most of this series, the editor decided to showcase it in Cameracraft magazine, with a cover and portfolio. You can find this in the November/December 2016 edition of Cameracraft.

MASTER PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2016/17 AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

THIS SECTION of the annual contains those Awards of Excellence which were shortlisted for the final selection of winners and eligible for consideration in counting up the total scores which decide the UK and Overseas Master Photographer of the Year titles (and, in turn, the overall International MPoY). These awards are based on the aggregate of the five highest scoring images entered by the photographer. Where pictures have already been reproduced in the main winners’ pages, we do not repeat them here. These images are not positioned in order of merit though you may find some sets of pictures grouped together by photographer, or the category involved .

2016: A YEAR OF PROGRESS AGAINST THE ODDS Richard Kilpatrick looks at the innovations and advances made in the last photokina year when everything from earthquakes in Japan to Brexit in Britain threatened to put the brakes on the industry

2

016 marks 25 years since the first mainstream digital cameras hit the market – devices like the Canon Ion. In quarter of a century, the almost centuries-old art of photography has been revolutionised at a pace that seems unimaginable when the major benchmarks of film, processing and colour are viewed in their historical context. Where 2016 stands out, however, is in the coalescing technology, a holistic approach to making all situations as easy as daylight, 1/250th @ ƒ8. Camera bodies, glass, lighting and processing have been on shared trajectory, where the goal is speed. It is in the compact, the affordable, that most advances have been made, threatening the foundation of established full-frame DSLR players even without the tragic knock-on effects of Japan’s earthquakes on the lives of those developing and manufacturing our cameras, and the factories they work in. An overall trend across 2016 has been the incredible success of the Fujifilm X-system. The SLR-styled X-T2 gained the 24Mp X-Trans sensor of the X-Pro2, and added 4K video, a polished control system and multi-mode AF tracking for astonishing accuracy alongside the 11fps continuous AF burst mode. Sony’s announcement of the RX100 V displays the advantages of 1” sensors and realistic expectations for spatial resolution

combined with continual advances in processing power. 4K video, 24fps continuous AF raw for 150 frames and 20Mp shows the advantages compacts have over DSLRs. Professionals may overlook their APS-C mirrorless system in favour of the full-frame bodies, but again the Sony A6500 shows what is possible in a very light, compact body. Five axis in-body stabilisation, 6K source downsampled to 4K video and HD video at speeds from 1fps to 100fps. Raw shooting with AF is a respectable 11fps for around 300 frames. Key to these figures is an old technology, made new. Back in the ‘70s Honeywell cracked the autofocus problem with the optical “phase detection” technique – an electronic equivalent of a split-image viewfinder. Now this technology has been scaled down and is present on ever more CMOS sensors – 315 points on the RX100 V, 425 on the A6500. For the ultimate in PDAF performance, however, look to the Canon EOS 70D and 5D Mk IV. Across the sensor area, each imaging pixel is comprised of two CMOS sensels, which operate as phase detection AF sensors during focus, and a single high-dynamic range pixel for image capture. Canon’s raw files reveal the pixel/subpixel structure and the effect this has on providing a full 14-bit capture. If you wondered why 120Mp small sensors were important, this is why – it isn’t

Voigtländer Hyper Wide-Heliar 10mm

78 • MPA MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL 2017

The Fujfilm XFS-50S promises to be the pro camera of 2017 beyond the realms of possibility to think that small sensors capturing different exposures then working in harmony to create a wider dynamic range, but lower than actual resolution file, could be the future. It is, after all, the past, when Nikon introduced the 2.7Mp D1, the sensor itself was actually 10.8Mp. Rather more interesting is the side effect that this is a light field capture, albeit with a very small focal range of adjustment – it allows the 5D to optimise focus in post-processing or generate differing degrees of softness in bokeh. In the meantime Sigma has continued to chase the elusive benefits of Foveon multi-layer

sensor, in the Quattro range which uses a Bayer-free blue layer aided by interpolated red and green chequerboard sensels. It is due to appear in a larger sensor (APS-H) version of the unusual mirrorless sd Quattro in 2017, but remains unsupported by Adobe raw workflow software. However that is the Canon 5D MkIV’s position too – to get the unique sensor benefits, you need to use the maker’s own software not Lightroom or Camera Raw or Phase One’s C1 Pro. Nikon of course have entered a new field – a growing field – with action cams for 2016. The

KeyMission 360 captures a full spherical field of view in 4K, with solid, rugged construction for cinematic, immersive footage. For more conventional footage the KeyMission 170 and 80 offer more conventional action cam footage. Meanwhile the drone market has continued to mature, and sub£1000 will now get highly usable models with collision avoidance. Notable entrants are DJI, who have released the compact, folding Mavic Pro – the size of a typical water bottle, it folds out for operation and includes a 4K camera with 3-axis gimbal, 27 minute runtime and near foolproof autonomy if line of sight is lost. GoPro have entered the drone market, with the Karma, presenting a polished consumer drone to support their Hero 4/5 cameras. Yuneec have added sophistication and speed, with the new six-rotor Typhoon H – starting at a little over £1000, at £1,700 it offers a complete package including the most sophisticated 3D vision system for autonomous flying yet implemented. Back on the ground, photographers are able to defeat the sun in more ways than ever; high-speed synchronisation has dominated studio flash technology this year. TTL triggers compatible with Nikon, Canon and Sony HSS modes are now a realistic expectation for studio flash, with the Elinchrom EL Skyport Plus HS (which now also supports Olympus), Broncolor introducing the Siros L, Bowens’ clever Generation X XMT500S and Profoto’s new D2 and Pro-10 TTL, which offers 1/80,000 T0.5 duration. This flowering of TTL (for the first time in high end studio generator pack flash with the Pro-10), li-ion portability and RF 2.4GHz triggering using dedicated hot shoe trigger commanders has come about through alliances between the big (mostly European) flash makers and the innovative (mostly Chinese) trigger manufacturers like Phottix and Godox. In the meantime, their own branded camera, location and studio flash models are gaining a reputation in professional use. For those who want their light less fleeting, Rotolight have made significant inroads into the continuous lighting market particularly for TV and cinema production, whilst the Manfrotto Lykos offers an affordable, controllable dual-purpose system ideal for studio portraiture. Capturing the image has also gained a new level of speed and sophistication. Sigma continue their move upmarket with the Global Vision series of lenses, 85mm ƒ1.4 ART and 500mm ƒ4

The Profoto Pro-10 is a 2400Ws AirTTL studio pack

Hasselblad’s special 4116 edition of the 1DX accompanying the new 12-24mm ƒ4 ART. It’s already been an exceptional year for them with the success of the 24-35mm ƒ2 full frame, 20mm ƒ1.4 full frame, 50100mmm ƒ2 APS-C and the entire revised lens range. As they pursue the SLR market, Zeiss has gone for the mirrorless demographic, with the Batis 18/25/85mm AF series for Sony’s full-frame FE-mount while not neglecting DSLR owners with exceptional Otus AF and Milvus manual focus launches. OLED displays and smooth finish may grab the buyer on Batis, but the image quality also grabs the eye. Tamron introduced the 85mm ƒ1.8 VC USD first seen at The Photography Show in March, where Voigtländer launched their revolutionary (industry first 130° rectilinear) 10mm ƒ5.6 Hyper Wide-Heliar for Leica M and E-mount alongside revised 12mm and 15mm designs. That was also where Sony’s new G-Master series appeared with an 85mm ƒ1.4 and 24-70mm ƒ2.8. At the other end of the market, Samyang continue to grow, and released their first AF lens – a 50mm ƒ1.4, again for Sony FE – rapidly followed by an AF E-mount 14mm ƒ2.8. Their Xeen ciné lenses are now used by feature film makers alongside Zeiss and

80 • MPA MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL 2017

Sigma’s constant ƒ4 aperture new 12-24mm design went on sale in October after a photokina launch Schneider, Canon and Sony highend optics. Behind the lens, sensors are also getting more affordable in larger sizes – from the Pentax K-1 delivering (at launch, at least) one of the best value and most versatile full-frame 35mm systems, to Fujifilm announcing the GFX-50S medium format camera – combining the ergonomics and handling of the X-T2 (itself a groundbreaking system for 2016) with a 50Mp 44 x 33mm sensor. Hasselblad also released a mirrorless 50Mp body, the X1D, which like the promise from

Fujifilm has been positioned at an extremely competitive price – while Phase One with their IQ100 back exceed the 100 megapixel barrier and also reach a true 645 format with a 54 x 40mm sensor (and about three times the price of the above contenders). Photographers in the wider world have benefitted from real innovation in the smartphone arena, as the technical limits of sensor size, lens size and device volume force more imaginative solutions. Huawei made an impact with their P9 Android smartphone; co-branded with Leica, the affordable device uses dual sensors for simultaneous (or separate) monochrome and colour capture, enhancing dynamic range, noise performance and quality for most snaps as well as offering more creative modes like blended refocusing. Not to be outdone, Apple’s flagship iPhone 7 Plus also sports dual cameras – though in this case, both are colour, behind different angle of view lenses for standard (56mm equivalent) and stabilised 28mm-equivalent wide. Like the P9, though, this dual lens setup has been used to provide depth of field effects, suggesting smartphone photographers really want - and understand - the look and benefits of larger sensors. By comparison Google’s new Pixel phone, with a single 12.3Mp sensor, looks rather tame (and overpriced), but DxOMark have rated it their highest score for a smartphone camera yet. More models are coming with dual cameras, like the LG G5 and V20, but at present this trio represent the most relevant battle for smartphone camera supremacy. Sony have opted for a different route – laser AF, 23Mp sensor and RGBC-IR metering sensor – for colour accuracy and cropping ability on their Xperia XZ. Not everything has been about speed, though immediacy is definitely a feature. As the instant film revival continues, Fujifilm have been joined by another brand supporting the Instax format, and have introduced a new square format inspired by classic larger format cameras and Instagram alike. The Leica Sofort – ‘Instant’ – is an affordable Leica, albeit an expensive Instax camera, with funky design and Leica-packaged film, including newly released monochrome. Lomography have also introduced a new Instax body, the Automat, via a successful Kickstarter campaign. Digital photographers aren’t left out, with the Instax Share SP-2 printer increasing speed and resolution for this clever accessory.
