WELCOME BACK Dear Friends As I put pen to paper, the heated debate and complete uncertainty surrounding Brexit appears to be coming to a head. However amongst the confusion, all that springs to mind is the old adage ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. It’s certainly ‘business as usual’ in all of the Iconic properties and as ever we have spent most of the winter months ensuring that everything is ‘spick and span’ for the busy spring and summer seasons ahead. During times of uncertainly a warm and sincere “welcome back” from a familiar face is undoubtedly one of the best antidotes to the utter craziness of day-to-day life. Whatever happens when the Brexit music eventually stops, our teams in Berkshire, Chelsea, The Cotswolds and the New Forest will be sure to be on hand to give you, your family, friends or colleagues the very warmest of welcomes. Barely a day goes by without me reminding myself that our people are our most important asset. As well as constant investment in our hotels’ physical assets, it is equally important that we invest in our people too. Recently, we gathered fifty-four of our managers for the inaugural Iconic ‘Heads of Department’ Conference. Several notable external speakers covered a number of stimulating topics, to great applause, however it was our storytelling dinner, the night before, which really highlighted what a phenomenal team we have. Not only did every course prepared by each of our Head Chefs, come with good reason, throughout the evening story after story unfolded, illustrating why some of our budding authors came into the hospitality business and others about a scenario at work, which clearly made them suitably proud. Some were inspirational and others hilarious, however they were all heartfelt. Ultimately they were all magical and not only did they make me very appreciative of what is really a big family, their stories also gave me a great deal of confidence that they will be at the forefront of our quest to ensure that we continue to do things a little differently. I am sure, given the opportunity they would love to share their stories with you too. Best wishes

Andrew Stembridge Executive Director

Living the

All our suites capture the essence of romance, heritage and luxury in their own unique design. With so many to choose from perhaps our General Managers can help you decide which to book for your next stay...

THE LADY ASTOR SUITE, CLIVEDEN HOUSE KEVIN BROOKS, GENERAL MANAGER Filled with opulence, history and sweeping views of our beautiful grounds, you cannot get more luxurious than the Lady Astor Suite. The suite has all the features of grandeur you’d expect from Cliveden; high ceilings, a mighty over mantel and a myriad of historical artefacts dating back to the reign of Elizabeth I. Popular for our bridal parties and special occasions, the suite also opens out onto an enormous private terrace with incredible views of not only the Parterre but the River Thames. I am particularly fond of this room due to its story which is such a prominent part of our own.

THE SLOANE SUITE, 11 CADOGAN GARDENS SOLIMAN KHADDOUR, GENERAL MANAGER Filled with Victorian splendour, allow me to introduce you to the Sloane Suite, my favourite of our suites at 11 Cadogan Gardens. Combining a classic colour scheme of gold, cream and black, with a canopied four poster bed, and dazzling chandeliers, guests can sit back in the elegant and spacious living area and watch the world go by from this first-class retreat. This exceptional suite, with antique furniture and large windows, enjoys stunning views over the leafy Cadogan Gardens, and is the perfect choice if you are travelling with a group of friends or family as it can inter-connect with our spacious Signature Suites.

KING CHARLES I SUITE, THE LYGON ARMS JASON ADAMS, GENERAL MANAGER My favourite suite would have to be the King Charles I Suite on the first floor. The hotel’s unique history is woven through the fabric of this exceptional suite. This is where King Charles I stayed before battle during the English Civil War in 1649 and a coat of arms sits above the traditional fireplace to mark his royal visit. A magnificent four poster bed continues the regal theme with the medieval glamour, matched by modern touches and a recent refurbishment to give this suite a warm, atmospheric feel. With a spacious lounge and seating area furnished with comfy sofas, antiques and original paintings, it has delightful views of the charming Broadway High Street, making it fit for royalty or couples looking for an unforgettable hotel experience.

THE MARRYAT SUITE, CHEWTON GLEN ANDREW COOK, GENERAL MANAGER Welcome to the True English Original of Chewton Glen. The Marryat Suite is our biggest, and oldest suite in the hotel, acting as the original bedroom and lounge of the house back in the 18th century. Whilst I believe all our bedrooms and suites offer the ‘wow’ factor, the Marryat Suite feels more like an apartment that just keeps on going. The best part of the suite is its private terrace with views of the Croquet Lawn. With comfortable lounge furniture and a hot tub you needn’t leave your luxurious bubble during your stay. ‘CLICQ’UOT 2018 saw Iconic Luxury Hotels team up with Veuve Clicquot as the new house pouring Champagne in all four properties. It is important that Iconic Luxury Hotels work in synergy with like-minded companies and Veuve Clicquot is as iconic, as it is world renowned.

ounded in 1772 in Reims, France, champagne house Veuve Clicquot colors life with audacity. More than champagne, Veuve Clicquot is an attitude that sparkles with joie de vivre, embodied by the House’s signature sunburst-yellow color. Madame Clicquot, the audaciously innovative woman known as la grande dame of Champagne, took the reins of the House in 1805, and become one of the first businesswomen of modern times. She cultivated a culture of excellence, and adopted “only one quality, the finest” as her motto. Her passion, vision, and innate sense of French art de vivre live on today in the House that bears her name. Veuve Clicquot spreads delight through its remarkable champagne range, including the iconic Yellow Label, and its joyful experiences around the world. Veuve Clicquot was acquired in 1986 and created its non-vintage Rosé in 2004. Popularity for this pour was so huge that the rest of the world had to wait a further two years for the remainder of the cuvée to become available. Today, Veuve Clicquot continues to be one of the largest Champagne houses in the world, and Iconic Luxury Hotels is proud to be a part of their growing journey.

TO POUR OVER For the past two decades, dining outside has been a matter of fashion, driven mainly by the popular cuisine of the time. One by one France, Italy, Spain and, more recently, Japan have been driving the industry almost exclusively.

nexpectedly, what we are seeing now is a different approach when we are called upon to rank a restaurant or ‘dining room’ – it is all about a zealous attention to the ingredients. Clearly the skills and cooking techniques are still fundamental, but with the opportunity to learn and absorb culinary skills being far greater, with the ease and speed of modern global travel, we are now quite often seeing young cooks running highly successful restaurants. Still, what people are really looking at are the ingredients regardless of whether we are in Hampshire, Berkshire, The Cotswolds or Chelsea the most common questions on the floor today are: Where is it from? Is it sustainable? Farmed or factory? Family run or pure business? The issue is not Italian or French cuisine but ‘are the tomatoes from Sicily?’ or ‘is the cheese from the Loire?’ In terms of wine, it mirrors this trend and the local, artisanal producers are having the time of their lives, and this is reflected in the fantastic quality and volume of sales in the English wine industry. Organically farmed or biodynamic produced wines are the protagonists of the new wine lists and vegetarian or vegan liquids are more and more in demand. Most recently, economic instability has had a great impact on the wine business, it is causing a cautious approach by new customers to the more expensive classic wine regions. The new tendency is to discover small family run vineyards in the East of Europe or from the unfairly underrated South Africa. New Zealand continues to deliver quality and consistency and so is a ‘go to’ for many. South America is still considered a cheap option – despite some really high quality wines – and the USA is fighting its own battle with China which is driving a movement to a new way of scoring/ ranking wines.

Whilst in Poland international leaders and policymakers are gathering for the 24th annual UN Climate Summit to better understand how to save the planet, a few weeks ago The Swedish Monopole of Systembolaget was leading an important meeting in Italy to underline the importance of sustainability in the wine industry. Organic and biodynamic wine making alone is not enough, recycling bottles, corks and even the paper from the labels is the next step. So no longer a simply great gastronomic experience, but a way to look at a better world for the future? Francesco Gabriele Wine Director at Iconic Luxury Hotels @WineChewtonGlen

With home-grown talent at Cliveden and a new MasterChef in Hampshire, it’s time to get to know the people behind our culinary triumphs. From career highlights to their favourite ingredients, our talented Chefs give us some food for thought...

PAUL O’NEILL Head Chef of The Cliveden Dining Room at Cliveden Describe your style of cuisine in 3 words: Modern British Cuisine Who’s your industry hero? It’s impossible to choose between Michel and Albert Roux.

Sous Chef of The Dining Room at Chewton Glen What piece of advice would you offer to future MasterChef contestants? The advice I would give to future contestants is to believe in their style of cookery and just be themselves on camera. Also never forget your basic culinary skills because they come in handy in the skills tests! What made you decide to apply for MasterChef? I applied because I wanted to see how far I could push myself and to make my family and mentors proud. What is it about working at Chewton Glen that you most enjoy? There is never a dull moment, it’s an extremely friendly environment where young chefs can learn life skills and expand on their knowledge of cookery.

What are your plans for The Cliveden Dining Room menu? To build upon André Garrett’s success and give the food a new and unique twist. Your culinary inspiration? Incredible produce inspires me to cook every day. Which ingredient could you not work without? That’s easy! Salt. Your career prior to Cliveden: I worked as Head Chef at Hattusa Restaurant, Berwick Lodge Hotel, Bristol. Prior to that I was Senior Sous Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel in East Sussex, during which time I won the Roux Scholarship 2013.

YOURSELF CLEAN BEAUTY Hydration and nutrition do not just apply to our internal health but what about our skin? It’s an important organ after all. Subjected to harmful UV rays, cold wintry days, bad diets and products filled with chemicals, many of us take our skin for granted.

The importance of clean beauty is on the rise this year and for good reason. We are becoming more mindful of how we take care of our mental health, the kind of food we feed our bodies and the beauty products we use. Swap the parabens and sulphates for mineral clays and seed oils, and opt for cleaner beauty. Your body will thank you for doing so…

TAKE THE SCENTS OF OUR SPA HOME WITH YOU With purity at the heart of what they represent, we are delighted to collaborate with British skincare brand, OSKIA on creating two heavenly spa collections across two of our hotels. Influenced by our glorious setting and using only the finest natural ingredients, the Chewton Glen Spa & Body Collection is an exquisite range of products designed to help you escape the demands of everyday life and keep your skin feeling and looking incredible. With its wondrous scents of Cedar & Wild Blackberry and reviving fragrance of Sea Salt & Water Mint, the collection was designed to reflect the scents of our location and deliver soothing results with every use.

These scents reflect the combination of strength, subtlety and femininity of the women who inspired them; Anna Maria with Black Rose & Cedar wood for calm and balance, and Nancy featuring Fruit Blossom, Jasmine, Wild Mint and Lily to refresh and stimulate. Both collections are available to purchase at the hotels, and feature within our bespoke spa treatments. Experience the soothing scents and take these beautiful products home with you.

Inspired by two remarkable ladies in the history of Cliveden, Anna Maria, the first ‘Mistress of Cliveden’ and Nancy Astor perhaps its most famous chatelaine, we have created two fabulous fragrances that not only delight the senses but have provided the inspiration for our own bespoke collection of luxurious body products.

FRIENDS In a world filled with digital noise, it’s time to wake up and smell the fresh air!

hen we say re-wild we’re not talking about restoring Britain’s wild nature (although we are extremely passionate about that and practise this already!). For us it’s more about embracing nature, reverting back to the halcyon days of our youth and enjoying time in the great outdoors. Bring your pooch along for the ride and discover the exciting scenery along the way as you explore over 300 acres of woodland, riverbank and gardens together at Cliveden, play a spot of croquet at Chewton Glen and walk hand in hand through the lavender fields of the Cotswolds at The Lygon Arms.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Even in the depths of the city there are plenty of opportunities to seek out greenery. The home of 11 Cadogan Gardens boasts over 5,000 acres of parkland, a fifth of which is just a short walk from the hotel in the direction of Kensington Gardens and several other neighbouring Royal Parks; or head south and along the famous Chelsea Embankment on your way to Battersea Park and Children’s Zoo.

If you go down to the woods today...

From July the city of London will become the world’s first National Park City, with a quest to make the capital greener, healthier and wilder.

Kids Club

llow Chewton Glen to show you how children and relaxation are perfectly paired.

Sip a gin and tonic, head to the spa, get lost in a good book and rest in the knowledge that your children are having the time of their lives. Our Kids Club is designed to keep the little ones entertained so you can have a well-earned break, and this summer we’re taking Kids Club to new heights...

Between Chewton Glen and Cliveden alone there’s over 500 acres of grounds to explore, each hotel offering a different feel. Chewton Glen is home to hidden pathways, beehives and a majestic mini-forest awaiting your intrepid footsteps. Through a private gate and a 10-minute walk away you’ll arrive out onto the sandy coastline of both Hampshire and Dorset. Past guests call it stunning, we call it home! Cliveden’s grounds are owned, managed and lovingly cared for by the National Trust. Perfectly manicured the hotel’s grounds are home to a maze, fitness trail and play den to enjoy. Once you arrive and look out to the Parterre you won’t be able to resist a leisurely stroll through the gardens. The Lygon Arms sits in the heart of the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain. Rolling hills, lavender fields, honeystoned buildings and quaint market towns make it the perfect destination to explore – whatever the weather!

Making its debut at the Chelsea Flower Show from Monday 20th May, the new Chewton Glen Kids Treehouse is an exciting new venture in collaboration with Blue Forest. As the creators of our world-famous guest Treehouses, Blue Forest are building a fantasy-like den for little explorers and big imaginations. The design will include numerous bespoke touches such as a comfy reading nook, purpose-built furniture, intricate rope work and an interior design scheme inspired by the Chewton Glen’s quintessential English country garden. Come and visit us on Stand 329 at this year’s flower show to be one of the first to see this incredible new structure. Located on the show’s famed Main Avenue, the exhibit features a striking planting scheme by Architectural Plants, a renowned nursery with an enthusiasm for quirky and unusual plants.

In keeping with the theme of the RHS Back to Nature Garden, co-designed by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, the planting design is light-hearted, encouraging children and families to spend time outdoors and reconnect with nature. This enchanting treehouse will then arrive in the grounds of the hotel at the beginning of July, fully equipped with plenty to entertain our little monkeys with the promise of creating nostalgic memories to treasure forever. With or without a luxurious den, Kids Club is where laughter, friends and memories are made. One moment they’ll make artistic creations to show you, the next they’ll head out on a treasure hunt, plus there are plenty of sports and games to play with activities you can enjoy as a family too. We have the added bonus of a cookery school awaiting the Junior Chefs of your family. From learning to bake the very best cakes to creating culinary masterpieces, we have classes to suit all ages from 6 years old making this the perfect addition to your family break away to the New Forest. …and for those of you dreaming of a romantic dinner for two whilst the little ones sleep, we also provide a babysitting service! As you ponder over the wine list, your children will be in safe hands with one of our fully qualified staff, so go and enjoy yourself!

BOOK A ROOM Chewton Glen hosted Captain Frederick Marryat for periods of the 1840’s where he gathered material for his famous novel “The Children of the New Forest”. Clearly the Captain was inspired by the hotel’s exquisite location on the edge of the New Forest, set within 130 acres of beautiful grounds. Subsequently, many of the hotel’s rooms are inspired by “The Children of the New Forest” and the Captain’s other novels and characters.

TWO SIDES GO TO WAR The English Civil War pit Queen Elizabeth’s Cousin Charles I against the forces of the English Parliament, and some of that played out within the very walls of The Lygon Arms itself. The suite now known as the impressive King Charles I Suite was where Charles I and his supporters would assemble. The other side of the English Civil War, the Parliamentary army, also stayed at The Lygon Arms. The meeting room now known as The Cromwell Room was where Oliver Cromwell slept the night before the Battle of Worcester. This battle would finally destroy the Royalist cause. A copy of his ‘warts and all’ portrait hangs next to a huge seventeenth century fireplace in The Cromwell Room today.

THE WALLS From historical figures to living Royals, Iconic Luxury Hotels boast a guestbook most could only dream of…

BOHO SQUARE 11 Cadogan Gardens was built by Lord Chelsea in the late 19th century and originally comprised four separate Victorian town houses. This helps explain the myriad of corridors, staircases and hallways throughout the hotel, and why it’s not uncommon to find a bemused guest wandering the corridors having taken a wrong turn. With a fabulous location in such a prestigious area, the hotel became vastly popular as a home from home for travelling Victorian aristocrats, politicians and bon viveurs. In that progressive era, the area was known as something of a bohemian quarter, attracting notable personalities including radicals, artists and poets.

FROM CHURCHILL TO CHAPLIN Cliveden House has played host to virtually every British Monarch since George I and has been home to three Dukes, an Earl and Frederick Prince of Wales. Queen Victoria, a frequent guest, was not amused in 1893 when the House was bought by William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest citizen. When he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law in 1906, Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl where guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw. If only the walls could talk…

MATTER Sales Director, Lisa Lernoux-Dock talks about the meetings that matter. @LernouxDock

eople love to do things that matter, and companies that encourage employees to take time to participate in events which give back to the community create a caring and fulfilling culture in the workplace. You can organise a great team activity with a purpose and harness the energy and investment expended to deliver added value for your company and your participants.

TEAM BUILDING WITH A PURPOSE PERFORMANCE WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE Teams will build a sports wheelchair. Each team will be provided with a chassis and simple instructions, and must then acquire the additional parts needed to complete their wheelchair by taking part in Crystal Maze-style challenges. At the end of the event the wheelchairs will be donated to an all ability sports club or an Armed Forces charity. CONVERSATION AND A CUPPA TEA PARTY Working in conjunction with Contact the Elderly, the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people, participants will learn how to create a fabulous afternoon tea and then host their older guests in a stylish dining room and make a toast to friendship with a glass of fizz!

The following activities are both entertaining and empowering, and in most cases can be run indoors and out. Over the past decade businesses have been putting more and more focus on purpose. An integral part of this is for companies to give back to the community with benefits including: 1. Encouraging trust and goodwill, which drive sales 2. Facilitating diverse relationships, which can be fruitful 3. Building stronger communities, which are better for the economy 4. Generating recognition and positive PR 5. Engaging employees, which bolsters recruitment and retention OK, so we know that the whole point of ‘doing good’ is to make a difference to the lives of others and not to benefit yourself, but business is business and of course you will always want to consider what’s good for your company. So why wouldn’t you organise an activity for your event which helps others AND brings quantifiable commercial returns? It’s a win-win no-brainer. Iconic Luxury Hotels is proud to offer a range of activities with a purpose. For more information visit https://iconicluxuryhotels.com/organise-ameeting/
