AND THE WINNER IS…
A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Iconic Luxury Hotels have been awarded ‘2022-2023 AA Small Hotel Group of the Year’, an incredibly high accolade indeed. The glittering awards were at London’s Marriott Grosvenor House with hospitality’s finest in attendance and hosted by Gabby Logan.
Dear Friends At a time when there seems to be a distinct shortage of good news generally, across the Iconic portfolio we have been fortunate enough to be enjoying a much rosier autumn with a clutch of new awards and accolades to add to our trophy cabinet. Winning ‘AA Small Hotel Group of the Year’ was a particular coup for us and although I remain adamant that Iconic is most definitely a very special collection, rather than a group, it is recognition nevertheless of the wonderful service that our brilliant teams continue to deliver, combined with continual investment in all our hotels, restaurants and spas and relentless creativity in conceiving new and unique experiences, for you, our loyal guests to enjoy.
Iconic also picked up a selection of awards in the Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2023; Cliveden’s beautiful Spring Cottage was crowned ‘Best House, Villa or Serviced Apartment’, and Chewton Glen won ‘Best Hotel for Romance’ in the UK and The Mediterranean. Chewton Glen also received a special ‘Legacy Hotel’ award, to reflect their consistent inclusion within the Condé Nast Johansens book for the past 40 years, as well as featuring on the cover twice (in 1983 and again in 2023). The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2022 proved successful for Iconic too, with properties shortlisted in several categories: Cliveden House and The Mayfair Townhouse for ‘UK Hotels’ and ‘London Hotels’ respectively; Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa shortlisted in ‘European Resorts’, and both Chewton Glen and Cliveden were ranked in the ‘World Spa Resorts’.
As regular guests you will also be very familiar with the importance we place in developing our teams and as I write we have literally just concluded our 4th annual ‘Iconic Leadership Conference’, which brings our entire Management Team together to develop, motivate and reward them. This year we took advantage of the opportunity to launch our latest sustainability initiatives, and to mark the occasion planted 70 oak trees at Chewton Glen, as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy scheme, creating a living legacy to commemorate The Queen’s remarkable 70 years on the throne.
Meanwhile, Cliveden House’s exceptional Spring Cottage has been showcased in the prestigious Elite Traveler’s Top 100 Suites Awards and named as one of the best suites in the world. Cliveden’s success continued when they scooped the Best Hotel at the Bridelux UK Awards recently, too. At this year’s M&IT Awards not only were Iconic recipients for a ‘Best Hotel Brand’ bronze award, but our very own Lisa Lernoux-Dock (Group Sales Director) took home the very deserved ‘Personality of the Year’ award – well done, Lisa!
We remain eternally grateful that you don’t appear to need too much encouragement to come back, time and time again, to enjoy our unique properties. However if you haven’t already planned a return visit, I sincerely hope that the following pages prove suitably inspirational. Best wishes
Andrew Stembridge

A T O T A L LY DECADENT ROUND-UP
SUMMER IN THE COTSWOLDS Summer in the Cotswolds was ushered in with ambient acoustic offerings, thanks to Broadway Unplugged hosted in the beautiful wisteria-clad courtyard of The Lygon Arms. With a veritable array of live musical talent, providing a unique soundtrack to summer alfresco dining, this particular music afficionado was delighted to pair their delicious cold glass of bubbles with such aurally pleasing delectations, and soak up the summer vibe.
‘BACK IN BUSINESS’ TOUR
I C O N I C ’ S A N N UA L BA S H …
Team Iconic have been working above and beyond, frantically fundraising for Hospitality Action’s ‘Back in Business Tour’. From 10th – 20th June, team members from all five properties swam, danced, walked, ran and cycled their way to raise over £6.5k for the charity, including one team even cycling their way through a day-long meeting!
Cliveden’s gravitational party-pull has been irresistible for centuries, and thus provided the perfect backdrop for Iconic’s annual bash in May. The delectable epicurean offerings from each house went down a storm – the Cliveden Edible Garden proved a particularly avid talking point. Wandering Hands acoustic trio set the musical mood, followed by DJ Chris Stark on the decks. The gorgeous colonnaded walled garden and scandalous Profumo pool set the scene, especially for those unexpectedly taking the plunge towards the end of the evening - naturally what goes on at Cliveden stays at Cliveden, but we can confirm that unlike certain historical Cliveden scandals, they remained fully clothed at all times. Surprised swimmers aside, it was Iconic in every way - think fabulous cocktails and lashings of Laurent-Perrier flowing freely, with a decadent time had by all.
J A M E S M A RT I N ’ S S U P E R C A R S U N D AY I-Spy was treated to a plethora of incredible cars along with like-minded enthusiasts at Chewton Glen in May for a special James Martin Supercar event – a fabulous showcase of over 150 stunning classic cars, from Aston Martins, McLarens & Ferraris to Campervans, rally cars & Land Rovers, as well as a stunning selection from James Martin’s enviable private collection (including his classic 1965 Ford GT40), much to the delight of all.

We like to keep things fresh at Iconic and apply the same trailblazing and innovative attitude to our wellness ethos as to our properties. With new spa partners now in residence, we look forward to offering a myriad of blissful new treatments, products and spa experiences for our guests and members to enjoy. Ever the trailblazer, Chewton Glen Spa is now offering an exciting new menopause spa day - Balance and Restore, thought to be the first of its kind. Created in collaboration with their new resident partner, OTO, who use results-driven CBD products that harness the power of CBD luxuriously and ethically, delivering as much CBD as possible through awardwinning products. Their spa massage treatments benefit by reenergising to release the tension, focussing the mind, and instilling deep relaxation to rebalance mentally and physically. A relaxing soundscape accompanies each, allowing you to find your own serene space. Balance and Restore is tailored to your own personal menopausal journey (be it peri, mid, or post). The day includes a 90-minute OTO body ritual massage, concentrating on “tuning” the body with
the use of live sound and a detailed stomach massage (known as Pechoti method) to help maintain the proper functioning of the body. Massaging the stomach brings fresh oxygenated blood, which in turn helps all organs to function better, as well as promoting the production of serotonin (the happy hormone) and oxytocin (which combats stress levels and cortisol in the body). A balancing soundtrack is played accordingly to assist with resetting and relaxing, and you’ll be gifted a selection of exercise, diet, and relaxation plans, as well as a full-size OTO product to take home, to assist and support sleep problems or clear brain fog - both common menopausal symptoms. O U R D E D I C AT E D T E A M R E C O M M E N D T H E I R FAV O U R I T E WA L K S As we head towards winter, it’s more important that ever to get out into the fresh air for those all-important doses of vitamin D and vitamin G – nourishing with nature, be it through gardening, tree-bathing or a wonderful walk. Here’s our favourite routes, recommended by the fabulous team on property who know first hand where to put your best foot forward.
Chewton Glen
The Lygon Arms
Clive McNish, General Manager, reveals the coastal beauty nearby.
Adam Teague, Manager of The Lygon Spa, challenges you to walk to Broadway Tower.
Returning once again to Chewton Glen in the summer, we welcomed Clive back as General Manager to our luxury country house hotel and spa. With over 25 years of resort, wellness, and spa management experience on three continents, his global journey started at Chewton Glen between 1995-2003, where he honed his skills as our then Spa Manager. Clive has a genuine passion for hospitality and thrives on providing an exemplary service experience to guests.
“Probably the most popular walk here would be from Broadway village to the Tower. Set in a 200-acre estate and parkland, the six-sided tower designed by James Wyatt at the end of the 18th century is a folly conceived by Capability Brown placed atop Beacon Hill - the second highest point in the Cotswolds - allowing an incredible view of 16 counties from the top of the building, and a spectacular view across the Severn Vale in Wales. The building has had many incarnations throughout its lifetime, (including becoming a holiday home for the Pre-Raphaelite art movement amongst others). There is now a museum within the walls, telling the story of the Tower, and offering an interactive tour too. Take a flask of tea to enjoy within the vast and beautiful parklands – you may even spot the resident herd of red deer in situ.” Find more information about visiting the Tower here: lygonarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do
“My favourite morning walk takes me to the cliffs of Highcliffe, a ten-minute walk from Chewton Glen. I enjoy starting in the dark and watching the light appear on the horizon, turning the sky from a black void into a living tapestry. There is something particularly special about autumn mornings and the array of colours on display, the air is clear, and the distinct smell of sea salt mixed with the dew on the grass creates a unique autumnal scent. The views across to the Isle of Wight and the Needles on a clear day is breathtaking. On the lighter side, it is usually possible to see a collection of small bobbing lights along the cliff path, as these get closer, the dogs they are attached to come into view. I wonder if the dogs are as in awe of their surroundings; they are probably more focused on getting back home for a bowl of treats.”
After exploring the wonder and sheer breath-taking beauty of the Cotswolds, return to The Lygon Arms and relax with the family around roaring fires, snuggled under warm blankets and catching up over warming drinks. Don’t forget, kids stay and dine free at The Lygon Arms during the school holidays: lygonarmshotel.co.uk/offers/kids-stay-and-dine-free

Cliveden House Erika Steward, Director of Sales and Marketing, invites you for a beautiful forest walk… “Leaving the house, walk towards my favourite part of the grounds, the Rose Garden, taking a moment to enjoy the tranquil peace here. Go out of the Rose Garden, turn right and walk towards the Yew Tree Walk, down to the river by the Boat House – you’ll see the fairytale Spring Cottage and witness the wildlife along the leafy banks of the Thames, the inspiration behind Wind in the Willows. From the river you will start the return journey towards Spring Drive, but rather than walking on the road/drive you’ll go through the woodlands. Walking under the leafy canopy, you’ll head towards the Water Garden – when you reach here, stroll along to The Fountain of Love (a breath-taking two-colour Carrara marble sculpture by Thomas Waldo Story for Lord Astor), and through the Long Garden, heading back towards Cliveden for a well-deserved afternoon tea.” clivedenhouse.co.uk/dine-with-us/afternoon-tea I CO N I C LUXU RY H OT E L S

11 Cadogan Gardens
The Mayfair Townhouse
Rebecca Liese, Rooms Division Manager, takes us on a stroll through Chelsea. “Starting off with a warm-up lap around Cadogan Gardens, where residents of 11 Cadogan Gardens and Apartments are granted access, kicking through the array of beautiful autumn leaves on the ground. I then head down Pavilion Road, grabbing a coffee from our fabulous baristas at Hans’ Bar & Grill and absorbing all the amazing aromas of baking from Bread Ahead. I head towards Sloane Square - the beating heart of Chelsea. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of bohemian Chelsea and the fabulous Royal Court Theatre, I continue to the right towards the Duke of York Square, just a few minutes away - the home of the Saatchi Gallery. They also have a fabulous food market every Saturday which is always a go-to for lunch breaks... amazing people-watching! From there, I would make my way along the Royal Hospital Road, famed for the Royal Hospital which hosts the Chelsea Flower Show every spring, smiling at the famous Chelsea Pensioners in their uniforms. I always ensure to stop off at the Chelsea Physic Garden - one of the best-kept secrets of London – and the second oldest in the country (The Oxford Botanic Garden being the first). ‘Established in 1673 as the Apothecaries’ Garden for training students to identify and use medicinal plants, they are still a leading light in botanical education and preservation’. Just a fantastic place to walk around in serenity in the middle of London, it’s stunning. I then wander the beautiful mews streets of Chelsea, taking in the multitude of British Heritage blue plaques honouring the fascinating politicians, artists, musicians, poets and scientists who have left their mark on Chelsea, all whilst gazing through the windows of these magnificent townhouses, embracing their warmth during the crisp autumn day.” To visit: 11cadogangardens.com
The Mayfair Townhouse’s Concierge, Darren Muylders, isn’t called ‘The Mayor of Mayfair’ for nothing! He recommends this fantastic royal walk from The Townhouse. “Turn right out of The Mayfair Townhouse door and across Piccadilly into Green Park, where you will find our regal neighbours at Buckingham Palace. Wander through London’s oldest Royal Park and past Clarence House, former home of the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history. Pass the Tudor palace of Henry VIII, and see some of the most exclusive shops in London, which have kept the royals suited and booted for centuries. Stop for a cup of tea at the King’s grocers, Fortnum & Mason. Also, close to The Townhouse, see the Household Cavalry at work, Westminster Abbey, where the Kings and Queens of England have been crowned, from William the Conqueror through to the late Queen Elizabeth II (concierge can arrange a visit inside to view this magnificent building, should guests wish), the Palace of Westminster, better known as the Houses of Parliament and, time permitting, you can enter inside to see where Charles I and William Wallace were sentenced to death. This walk will hit the big sightseeing spots in true Townhouse style, and takes you off the beaten path on a fabulous and exciting walk of historic and contemporary royalty!” To book your Mayfair stay, visit: themayfairtownhouse.com

WINTER FIZZ We are proud to have one of the largest (and continually evolving) selection of the finest English wines in-house - not only are they sensational, but also sustainable, further reducing our carbon footprint. Our fabulous Wine Director, Francesco Gabriele, recommends a selection of home-grown festive fizz for your delectation…
Cliveden House – Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs 2009 The valley of Nitimbreha made its first appearance in the Domesday Book in 1086, but vines weren’t planted until around 900 years later. Nyetimber now enjoys a world-renowned reputation for its sparkling wine, coupled with an impressive sustainability ethos - a large part of the land is kept as forest. This 2009 Blanc de Blancs has biscuity aromas along with an abundance of nectarine, peach, pastry and a hint of caramelised fig, and vivid citrus. Cleverly pair it with Cliveden’s roast pheasant, slow-cooked leg, swede and blackberries.
Chewton Glen - Cottonworth Rosé NV Hugh, owner of Cottonworth Vineyard, located in the heart of the Test Valley in Hampshire, claims that there is something very special about the relationship between vine and man, a uniquely magical intimacy. Pale pink in colour, the bouquet displays aromas of red berries followed by a hint of apple. The palate is fresh and lean, coated by its tiny bubbles. A cosy treat. Charming with Chewton’s Roast loin of lamb, sprouting broccoli, marcona almond and Caesar salad.
The Lygon Arms - Hoffmann & Rathbone Brut Rosé NV Run by husband and wife, Ulrich Hoffmann and Birgit Rathbone, Hoffmann & Rathbone tells a story of love and passion, craft and artistry in winemaking. The English quirk of doing things differently is present in all their wines and especially in their rosé. Floral, and fragrant, with scents of strawberry and peach blossom, the wine is evocative of fresh figs with a sprinkle of fresh ginger. It is balanced and its persistent effervescence makes the next sip irresistible. A great love match with Lygon’s aged beef Wellington, truffle, mushrooms, tomatoes, Koffman’s chips, and red wine jus.
11 Cadogan Gardens - Simpsons ‘Canterbury’ Rosé NV Located in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Simpsons’ vineyards “...set an alluring scene, looking out over gently undulating English countryside towards the distinctive copper-green spire of the village Church.” Created from exclusively estate-grown Pinot Noir, the grapes are hand-picked from vineyards situated on the iconic chalk slopes of the North Downs of Kent. Delicate as soft rose petals, and aromas of fresh strawberry sorbet, this wine shows finesse and balance. It is crisp, clean and complex with numerous layers gently experienced, sip after sip. Savour at Hans’ Bar & Grill with slow-cooked aubergine (v) baby onions, sundried tomato sauce and vegan feta.
The Mayfair Townhouse - Coates & Seely Rosé NV ‘Above all, we are Dandy!’ And what a great combination that is with a boutique winery. In 2008, two old friends – Nicholas Coates and Christian Seely – started their adventure in an ancient chalk downland of Hampshire. A secluded valley nestling quietly in the hills, where the chalk soils and south-facing slopes presented the perfect terroir. They planted vines and began their craft. A decade later, their sparkling wines are listed in royal palaces and iconic houses around the world. Their rosé is a delightful pale, salmon-pink colour. Made wholly from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, this wine is perfect for celebration. Scents of rosehips and strawberry abound, whilst a superb vibrant palate teases with sweet fruitiness. Delight in a taste of the The Townhouse with swordfish, braised cauliflower, tomato, tomatoes, capers and olives.

MICHAEL TURNER’S
Poppy Hunt
Michael Turner’s Poppy Hunt has become a popular local tradition. For the last seven years on Remembrance Day, Michael, Chewton Glen’s Artist in Residence (whose talented wildlife sculptures in stainless steel are dotted around the Walled Garden) hides 11 handmade steel poppies in the New Forest for the public to find and keep. The first Poppy Hunt was conceived in 2016, after Michael received a box of his grandfather’s medals and diaries from his mother. Moved by the experiences and sheer heroism of his grandfather and fellow soldiers, and inspired by the Tower of London’s flood of thousands of commemorative poppies (‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ by artist Paul Cummins), Michael was moved to create something memorable to appeal to adults and children alike. Sculpting 11 red poppies from steel and painting them crimson, he hid each one around the local area for the public to find on Remembrance Sunday. Photographing the poppy in position showing hints of the surroundings, each was posted on social media throughout the day for his followers to find.
The response was phenomenal and has grown every year since - so much so he now must travel incognito to hide them. The first image always goes out early, kicking off a fun day – families often get involved. The rule is that the first to reach the poppy keeps it, and the finder makes a donation to the Royal British Legion via a charity page set up on Michael’s Facebook page, or directly. Not only does the Poppy Hunt provide much joy and fun to the local community - especially during covid, when fun was at a minimum and since it was outdoors, was socially acceptable - but it also raises awareness and funds for the Poppy Appeal; Michael estimates it’s raised over £10,000 to date. For those who aren’t lucky enough to be in the area for the hunt, an online auction of 11 further poppies is held annually, and all proceeds go to the Poppy Appeal (last year over £5,000 was raised online alone). michaelturnerstudios.co.uk
Iconic EXPERIENCES
Incentive travel has changed considerably over recent years. Previously, the trend was to reward hard-working employees with luxury overseas trips (with the resulting effect of boosting productivity within the workplace, enhancing team building and promoting company culture). Now the focus has shifted in favour of prestige experiential stays in the UK. Companies were already looking closer to home pre-pandemic, with a view to improve sustainability and reduce their corporate carbon footprint. After the pandemic restricted travel further, the focus was honed firmly on home soil, exploring alternatives within the UK luxury market. Subsequently, a growing demand has risen for authentic and experiential one-off events, as more companies look for unique experiences that beat all others in engagement, memorability, and provide picture-worthy talking points for the all-important social media posts. Recently recognised as ‘One of the Best’ at the M&IT (Meetings & Incentive Travel) awards in September (and our own Lisa Lernoux-Dock scooping the welldeserved Personality of the Year), Iconic Luxury Hotels’ five uniquely luxurious properties in the UK provide
unparalleled, bespoke experiential destinations, as well as great meeting places. In addition to enviable locations, we can offer a myriad of fabulous experiences such a high-adrenaline RIB blast or a luxury yacht cruise on the Solent, a private ‘insiders tour’ of the Morgan Motorcar factory in the Cotswolds, followed by the keys of a Morgan for the day to explore the exquisite countryside. Also on offer is a photography walking tour, exploring the streets and gardens of Chelsea under the expert guidance of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Marissa Roth; engaging and immersive dining experiences at the elegant Cliveden House; or a professional cooking class at a social enterprise kitchen, where participants can give back to the local community. Whether you opt for vibrant city, countryside or coast, each of our properties provide unparalleled locations in which to host a range of extraordinary and exceptional experiences – each sure to get your teams talking long after they’re over, and keen to come back for more. G R E AT OA K S , F RO M L I T T L E A C O R N S , G RO W At the close of Iconic Luxury Hotels Leadership Conference at Chewton Glen, 70 of the management team each ‘planted a tree for the Jubilee’ within the grounds, joining others nationwide in the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a unique tree-planting scheme to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. The QGC highlights the value of trees and woodlands in our lives, enhances air quality, slows climate change, creates valuable habitats for wildlife, aids wellbeing, and creates further woodland for future generations to benefit from. The planting of the oak trees served as an equally fitting launch for Iconic’s 2023 sustainability agenda, developed in partnership with The Sustainability Group (one of their co-founders, Alex Smith, attended the ceremony, fittingly laying the roots for both a tree and that of our partnership). Their expert guidance will help Iconic improve and build our reputation as socially responsible and environmentally sustainable luxury properties, whilst co-operating with local, national, and global initiatives to reduce our environmental impact - thus creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for both current and future generations to enjoy.
