Last year Tenerife welcomed Nicky Summerbee, Darren Jackson, Regi Blinker and x-pro’s who helped make the event fun, exciting and one not to be missed and also lined out against an eager team of CD Tenerife veterans. The 2010 Tournament will, as usual, be fun from start to finish with the usual array of ex-stars from the SPL, EPL and La Liga. La Finquita Many of us remember La Finquita as a unique, get away from it all venue and small hotel, as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas of the south of Tenerife. Set in the countryside, uphill from Los Menores on the road to Taucho, and only ten minutes away from the coast, La Finquita is indeed what its name suggests, a little Canarian farmhouse, set in a world of its own with magnificent views. Those who remember it will also remember the beautiful restaurant complete with volcanic rock and intimate tables set in alcoves, lush gardens, and live entertainment at the weekends. Well, it’s all back. La Finquita’s romantic restaurant is open again, specialising in value for money Sunday lunches prepared by chef Pete Quilty, with entertainment on the terrace from 3pm with Mike Edwards. For reservations call 922 163 236 or email lafinquita@ymail. com

Fiestas de San Andrés November 29th - 30th

Roll out the barrel on 29th November for the fiestas of San Andrés in several Tenerife towns. This is when the local wineries open to taste the year’s new wine which in Icod de los Vinos is accompanied by roast chestnuts and salted fish, and includes the ritual of Las Tablas (the boards), in which young people slide down the steep streets at breakneck speeds on greased boards making a tremendous noise. The wine cellars open to the sound of traditional folk songs called Isas, folías and malagueñas. In Puerto de la Cruz, everyone gathers

in Plaza del Charco to throw hundreds of pots, pans and other old objects around or bang them on the ground, making quite a din as they move along the streets. The Castañada (chestnut feast) is held in the square itself, offering the opportunity to try many typical products of the island, like chestnuts, fish, toasted corn flour, sweet potato and wine. San Andrés is celebrated in many other towns including La Orotava, Fasnia, Candelaria, Igueste de San Andrés and Arona.

WOMAD 2010 November 11th to 14th

Las Palmas’ lovely Parque de Santa Catalina will once again play host to WOMAD Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. WOMAD Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be brought to life by the musicians and DJs who are invited to perform.

Get ready to be enthralled by sights, instruments and sounds from all around the world. Experience musicians creating their favourite dishes at Taste The World. Learn about the artists - their culture and history, hear the

secrets of the instruments they play and discover new dances at the adult workshops. Or introduce your little ones to the children’s workshops where their artistic skills will be put to use making models and hats and other such wonders which will adorn them in the children’s procession at the end of the weekend. This festival is an international experience, and one which is well worth an island hop to see. When using the ferry services and local airlines, if you are a resident, be sure to claim your discount!

Miss and Mister Tenerife event During a special dinner and pre-gala parade of the candidates for these two titles at the official venue, Hotel Jardín Tropical in Costa Adeje on September 30th, several ancillary titles were awarded, including Miss and Mister Pelo Bonito (lovely hair), Cuerpo Bonito (lovely body), Nueva Imagen (new image), Medavita, and of course, Jardín Tropical. The winners of Miss and Mister Tenerife were chosen in the Plaza del Cristo, La Laguna during the following weekend. There were 28 contestants from all parts of the province for each of the two titles. Judith Estela Guerra, representing the discotheque Big Ben, was chosen as the most beautiful woman in the province and crowned Miss Tenerife by Amanda Perdomo, her predecessor. The title of Mister Tenerife was won by Alberto José Pérez Lorenzo, representing La Palma. They will both now go on to represent the province of Tenerife in the contests for the titles of Miss and Mister Spain.

Una orquesta muy romántica Family Concert, Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Tenerife Auditorium, November 27th, 12 noon

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and will continue to prove that it is one of Europe’s leading orchestras. This Saturday afternoon concert,

Una orquesta muy romántica, sees them play some classics from the romantic period, from some of the world’s great composers, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Brahms and Mendelssohn,

and is designed for students in primary education. The concert director Iker Sánchez says they want to explore “the relationship between music and literature, a source of inspiration for composers in the 19th century”, and have worked in conjunction with schools who will introduce pupils to texts related to the pieces chosen for this concert – Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night’s Dream for instance. This is suited for pupils in 3rd – 6th class at primary level (ages 8-12). More information 922 849 080 www. ost.es

National Dance Company 2 Tenerife Auditorium, November 6th/7th, 9pm

Spain’s National Dance Company 2 was created by the company’s Creative Director, Nacho Duato, in October 1999, with the principal aim being to train and prepare dancers for their professional careers. The CND 2 (Compañía Nacional de Danza 2) is a product of the coming together of the country’s dance schools and conservatories and professional companies. CND 2’s repertoire is predominately works by Nacho Duato, as well as new works by young promising choreographers. This is ideally suited for young dangers giving them the opportunity to work closely with new trends in ballet and introduce

10

new movements onto the stage of classical dance. CND 2 also works to inspire young dancers as well as introduce the public (old and new) to contemporary dance

as well as the growing cultural menu on offer in Spain. More information/reservations 903317327/www.auditoriodetenerife. com

Amouage – oriental seduction

Seduction and sensitivity has a new name – Amouage is the exclusive oriental essence for ladies personifying elegance, lifestyle and femininity. A very special perfume perfect for someone special on special occasions. A real surprise under the Christmas tree. For thousands of years, the Arabian world has dominated the art of beguiling the senses with the most aromatic fragrances in the 12

world. In the Sultanate of Oman the Royal Family has brought this art to perfection over the last 25 years. Amouage, the perfume of the Royals, could also be called the oldest Christmas present in the world. The Three Holy Kings, who came from Oman, brought gold, myrrh and frankincense from the precious Agarwood tree to the new born Jesus - ingredients which even today remain the secret of this perfume. It is produced with pure natural essences, everything completely handmade from the beginning. The exotic fragrance from the royal family is now considered the national perfume of Oman. It is also a classic wedding present which has a deep tradition, even in poorer families, and is regarded as essential. It is now distributed in 26 countries all around the world, in the most exclusive perfumeries. Amouage stands for singularity. For the first time it can now be found in Tenerife, in the Xazzperfumeria in Puerto de la Cruz. The name ‘Amouage’ is composed of the Arabian word ‘amwaj’, which means wave and the French word ‘amour’. ‘Waves of emotion’, this expression describes exactly what you feel, according to Juha Eric Turunen, who november 2010

feels a deep passion for this product. This is also reflected by the ambiance in his small, exclusive perfumery. You are breathing in the oriental fragrances as soon as you walk through the door. Listening to the music in the background you feel as if you have been carried away in an Arabian fairytale. Since 1994 the British general director, David Crickmore, has managed the transformation of a classic essence into an exclusive brand name. It now appears in a modern, elegant design with 14 different fragrances for women or men. As well as these, there are classy soaps, exquisite home fragrances, Arabian incense, aromatic candles and an exclusive body care range. Amouage represents a royal lifestyle combined with the magic of Arabian nights – a real exquisite Christmas present which is, after all, the oldest one in the world, appreciated by the Holy Kings. Xazzperfumeria is located in Calle PÊrez Zamora 28, in Puerto de la Cruz (near Plaza del Charco). It is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm, and Saturdays 12 noon to 3pm, or you can make your own personal appointment by calling 922 372 937.

Fundraiser for Callao Kids While the recent event in the Jasmin Lounge, Callao Salvaje raised funds for Callao Kids, it was the adults who had all the fun. The impromptu MC Sallyann, loads of the island’s top entertainers, and a hugely anticipated set from the UK’s X Factor star Rowetta, most certainly did not disappoint. Nearly €400 was raised towards the kids’ club, and organisers want to send a huge thank you to everyone involved and who gave their time.

La Gomera has an ample history from which various traditions have survived, the most famous being the whistling language (Silbo), a method of communication capable of overcoming the limitations of the rugged terrain. In 1492, Columbus sailed off towards the unknown from San Sebastiån, the capital, and ever since, the island has been known as Columbus Island (Isla Colombina). La Gomera is a walker’s paradise, with its fronded forests, impressive ravines and green valleys which seem to belong to another age, surrounding idyllic villages and towns with traditional Canarian architecture, and small beaches. It is a small island of little more than 20 kilometres from north to south but its area of 378 square kilometres holds a priceless ecological treasure which has been declared a World Heritage Centre by Unesco. There are very few places in the world which can 24

rival the biodiversity of La Gomera, made all the more valuable by its prehistoric characteristics. Rich vegetation, a relic from the beginning of time, descends, step by step, down to the coast. Steep ravines, fertile valleys and agricultural areas, where man has laboured hard to reap a harvest, mould the landscape. Meanwhile, in the heights, the mountain crests trap the clouds brought by november 2010

the trade winds, until they discharge their droplets of moisture, creating a phenomenon known as horizontal precipitation. The water, which permeates to every corner of the island, arrives as a misty veil over the prehistoric moss-festooned evergreen rainforest in the Garajonay National Park whose trees, often of strange and twisted shapes, can reach a height of 30 metres, and give the landscape an incredibly magical appearance. The Garajonay National Park is one of 17 Protected Areas which cover one third of the island’s surface area, and is a member of the Spanish Network of National Parks. This magnificent centrepiece of the island houses the best laurel forest in the world. The Canarian Laurisilva to be found here is of great scientific interest because a large percentage of the animal and plant species that make up this ecosystem are unique to the island. For visitors, there is a recreation area inside the forest called La Laguna

Grande, with facilities such as barbeque grills, a running water supply, public toilets, a children’s playground and a restaurant. In San Sebastian, the island’s capital and port, places to visit include the Count’s Tower, the Church of the Assumption, where the Columbus expedition members were blessed, the Pozo de la Aguada and the Casa de Colón Museum. The Majona Natural Park and the Natural Monuments of Los Roques are of great natural interest. Los Roques are situated on the crest separating the heads of two ravines: La Laja and Benchijigua. This area contains four volcanic plugs, spectacular examples of the solidification of lava inside volcanic chimneys, before reaching the surface, where subsequent erosion has left these plugs exposed. Barranco del Cabrito and the Special Reserve of Puntallana are also located in the district. The coastal area of Valle Gran Rey is popular for holidays and possesses beaches plus hotel and apartment accommodation. The Valle Gran Rey area is a rural park with striking features. Human 26

activity has left remarkable agricultural terraces on the slopes, palm tree forests surrounding crops and small houses dotted about the landscape. Its small port is linked with San Sebastián and Los Cristianos by Fred Olsen ferries. Playa Santiago is a fishing village and port, and the area’s upper reaches are famous for the Hotel Jardín Tecina and the adjacent Tecina Golf course. Vallehermoso is known for its crafts. Items are made from palm fronds, cane, wood and wicker. Also, traditional red clay pottery and rag blankets are made there. Places to visit in Vallehermoso are the natural monuments of Roque Cano, La Fortaleza, El Lomo del Carretón and Los Órganos, cliffs of ancient volcanic rocks which have eroded to produce organ tube-like columns dropping vertically into the sea. There is much more to see and do. All around the island, the scenery is breathtaking. Wild but peaceful, La Gomera is full of unexpected treasures for the visitor, and only a short ferry trip away from Los Cristianos. LR-TDV8, linked to the sophisticated and totally adaptable six-speed transmission with CommandShift速 which responds to driving style and conditions in all situations. This results in a quick response and the most smooth and efficient gear changes ever, while at the same time improving fuel consumption. With this combination, the 2010 Range Rover can accelerate from 0 to 100km/hr in 9.2 seconds and onwards to reach a top speed of 200km/hr. Its average fuel consumption is 11.1 litres/100km with emissions of 294g/km. Front and rear parking sensors are supplied as

standard and the door mirrors are fitted with anti-glare glass which darkens automatically if excessive light is detected. The Range Rover has an imposing road presence, enhanced by its new design front grille and optical groups. The design of the concentric circle headlamps gives a stronger personality as well as adding style. They are equipped with a system which automatically selects dipped or main beam, detecting vehicles approaching or ahead. The lights, which are extremely white, offer exceptional illumination which moves with the direction of the vehicle. The elevated driving position introduced for the first time in the Defender, is now a primordial characteristic of Land Rover vehicles, giving the driver improved visibility all around, better control and a feeling of security. It goes without saying that there is plenty of storage space, as well as nets to secure your cargo and even a bag for your skis. This is just a fabulous car, and who knows what 2011 will bring? Owner Manolo Martín, spends an inordinate amount of time and skill searching out the best and freshest of ingredients and preparing specialities that you would normally only find in the centre of the Spanish peninsula. As soon as you enter the welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant you are struck by its truly Spanish identity, all the rooms are decorated with authentic Spanish touches such as original trophies from traditional bullfights. The Serrano hams not only add to the décor, but also to the wealth of appetising aromas which assail your senses to beguile the spirit and stimulate your appetite as you walk through the door. El Mesón, as it is known to its many regular customers has a wide range of menu choices from typical tapas to the full spread of five and six courses considered necessary in some of the heavier eating regions of central and northern Spain. The menu selection on offer is of superb quality. For starters, try some of that excellent Serrano ham, some slices of Manchego cheese or the Russian roulette of Pimientos de Padrón (tiny pointed green peppers with sea salt sautéed in olive oil which are normally sweet, but now and again give you a piquant surprise). There really should be a better expression than cold cuts to describe the incredible selection of spicy sausages, chorizos, dried and salted fillet of pork and a long etc. that is the inheritance of the Spanish november 2010

nation. Each slice delights and tempts you to try the next, why not try a mixed platter? For a main course be tempted by the freshest of seafood and fish bought from the local boats or flown in from the wholesale fish markets of the Spanish peninsula daily. Or if meat is more to your liking, El Mesón has the most exquisite selection of Spanish cuts, including of course, those delightful one-bite, tiny baby lamb chops, T-bone steak for two with rock salt, cut in slices, and one of the highlights, Presa Ibérica. Their bodega, they have drawn up an extensive wine list which holds an excellent choice of wine to suit all palates and pockets and Manolo will be delighted to help you choose the right wine to complement your meal. The extensive bodega contains D.O. Toro wines, which according to Robert Parker’s Independent Consumers’ Guide to Fine Wines, is the main runner-up in the Spanish section and Thermathia and received the maximum of 100 points and has a price which reflects this, another promising wine, plus others like San Román, Numanthia, Dominio del Bendito and Titan del Bendito. To round off your gastronomic experience, there are few cuisines that can match the variety of delicious desserts that are on offer in Spain. Our personal favourite was Crema Catalana, break through the crisp caramel topping to savour the subtly vanilla flavoured, melt-in-your-mouth pudding below. Almost resembling a museum, the premises houses numerous unique pieces including paintings, drawings and sculptures created by Canarian and Spanish artists for Faro. Other items have been shipped in from Brazil, Thailand, Cambodia, and notably the natural stone used throughout has come from northern China. The Alpha is adorned by La Rosa de Los Vientos (the rose of the winds) which is said to prevent mariners from getting lost at sea and help them benefit from favourable winds. Perfect geometric designs and meaningful numbers run throughout, and conclude on the Terraza Griega with its Omega doors, which signify the end of the journey, the return to the sea. Even a visit to the ladies’ and gentlemen’s conveniences is an artistic and thought provoking experience as they too are adorned with sculptures. Faro has been visited by many well known personalities from the world of music, sport and politics including Jennifer Lopez, Luis Miguel and Alejandro Sanz, and is a regular favourite of Canarian footballers Pedro (Barcelona) and David Silva (Manchester City), who are both members of

La Roja, the Spanish national team. These stars go to Faro for its high standards and because they know they will not be disturbed, their presence will not be revealed. You just never know who you might see there, or who you may be rubbing shoulders with. Don’t leave Tenerife without being able to go home and tell your friends that you’ve been there. Go to Faro in Costa Adeje and enjoy a breathtaking sunset cocktail or drink in what has become a Legendary club in Spain. Only then can you Be Part of the Legend. Faro is open from 7pm until the early hours, every day except Monday. For more information on VIP bookings and guest list, call 607 765880 or 620 306384. A de-light-full home with Luz Garden Why not give your home an exclusive touch and a delightful atmosphere? Especially now, as the nights grow longer and the days shorter, the wide variety of all kinds of lamps at Luz Garden can give any room a romantic and stylish atmosphere. Lamps from Luz Garden are designed and manufactured in their own factory on the island. Therefore they are exclusive and very individual, and cannot be found in any other shop. At the same time the price-quality relationship is unbeatable.

Lamps from Luz Garden glisten and shine in many very different ways. Any style can be catered for. Do you prefer an elegant lifestyle or a more rustic touch? Are you looking for something colourful, exotic or romantic? No matter what your individual requirements are, Luz Garden has something to suit every type of life- and living style. Especially famous are the colourful Tiffany lamps, which are a kind of artwork in themselves. Animals, or flower-fantasies, these are very special lamps for your lounge or dining room, reflecting a very special kind of light in your daily life. Recently a new range of precious crystal lamps have been drawing the attention of visitors to the shop. There can be nothing more elegant than these very special and brilliant pieces. Crystals which have come from Czechoslovakia are mixed with rare rock crystals to create much more than a lamp – this is a type of jewellery which gives a very special light to any home. This kind of luxury reflects a very special style of decorating your home. Lamps from Luz Garden

Queen Elizabeth

inaugural cruise

46

november 2010

in the frame

Queen Elizabeth, the latest Cunard liner, sailed into the port of Santa Cruz on October 19th during her inaugural cruise. She has all the style and grace of the Queen Victoria with some of the majesty of the Queen Mary 2 and is sure to become a firm Cunard favourite. Decorated in exquisite detail in the style of 80 or 90 years ago, this latest Queen is traditionally Cunard but with all the latest technology. The 170 years of Cunard history can be seen reflected in the display cases around the ship, with special reference to the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Elizabeth 2. Diners still eat from Wedgwood plates and sip from Waterford glassware in The Verandah restaurant and the famous White Star service is still proudly on offer in the Britannia restaurant and elsewhere in the ship. There are some 1,000 crew to take care of the 2,000 passengers on board who on this occasion were mainly British and American with some Germans and a group of 200 Japanese. Queen Elizabeth returns to the port of Santa Cruz on December 8th during a 13-night Mediterranean cruise.

Island Escape Cruises

Thomson’s Colourful Coasts See the Atlantic’s most eye-catching coastlines on this seven night feast of sun, sea and sand, which departs from Tenerife. Island Escape is the most laid back ship in the fleet, taking a more informal approach to life at sea. On the activities front, you can enjoy everything from pampering spa treatments and sports, to salsa classes and fruit carving demonstrations. And at night, it’s all about side-splitting stand-up comedy, live bands and cabaret. There are three restaurants to choose from, one with waiter service and two which offer bumper buffet spreads.

Oasis: Waiter service and chef’s à la carte specials are the order of the day in this stylish eatery. Think grilled fillet steaks, fish dishes and desserts like amaretto crème brûlée and double chocolate cheesecake - all washed down with world-class wines. A cover charge applies and reservations are required. The Island Restaurant: Serving international and British buffets in spacious surroundings - open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Beachcomber Restaurant: Offering self-service buffets 24 hours a day, it’s the perfect place for a light lunch or a late-night snack. Plus it regularly hosts international theme nights. Room service is also available 24 hours a day for an extra charge.
