Dear Dr. De La Flor Dear Dr De La Flor,

along with lifestyle changes to manage symptoms of IBS. Medicines may include anticholinergics for cramping, medicines for diarrhoea or constipation, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs. Stay strong.

I believe I suf fer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). What would you suggest to at least alleviate this troublesome problem? Cheers, John

Best wishes.

Dear John, Troublesome and frustrating are both excellent terms to define your condition. My first piece of advice will be confirm the certainty of the diagnosis. IBS or Spastic Colon can be diagnosed based on symptoms. In most cases, only minimal tests are needed. Tests may include: Medical history and physical examination; A blood test for celiac disease (especially if diarrhoea is your key symptom), complete blood count and sedimentation rate, which checks for levels of inflammation in the body; Stool analysis. Thyroid function tests and imaging tests, such as colonoscopy, are occasionally done. IBS is a long-term (chronic) but manageable condition. Treatment will depend on the types of symptoms you have and their severity, as well as how they affect your daily life, and will likely involve changes to your lifestyle It is essential that you have

a close working relationship with your GP to monitor your symptoms and identify changes in your diet and lifestyle that can help relieve the symptoms. Keeping a journal of your symptoms can help you identify triggers. Make sure he/she helps you create an all-encompassing, holistic treatment plan that will meet your needs. The average fiveminute consultation offered by some doctors out there is, to put it bluntly, a joke. No single type of treatment for irritable bowel syndrome works best for everyone. It will be necessary for you to adapt your lifestyle to best deal with your symptoms and still carry on with your daily

For the next two weeks, let’s spend a few minutes pondering if we truly believe that what we do and the way we do it, is truly making us better individuals. Doing ordinary things in an extraordinary manner will bring us happiness and peace of mind. If you and I truly believe it, and do it, we will literally start a major revolution in ourselves. “Let those who think their work has no value recognise that by fulfilling their insignificant tasks out of love of God, those tasks assume supernatural worth. The aged who bear the taunts of the young, the sick crucified to their beds, the street cleaner and the garbage collector,

the chorus girl who never had a line, the unemployed carpenter – all these will be enthroned above dictators, presidents, kings, and Cardinals if a greater love of God inspires their humbler tasks than inspires those who play nobler roles with less love.” Fulton Sheen. Thanks so much for all the messages and texts received. I wish you, even if I don’t know you personally, a meaningful 2013, filled with a desire to keep fighting till the very end. A special prayer to all those who celebrated Christmas with a loved one gone to Heaven in 2012. God bless your pain, your sacrifice and every one of your tears. Talk to you in a couple of weeks, unless you call me before then!

activities. To summarize the key guidelines for IBS, I recommend that you treat your body and mind like a responsible pro-athlete does: Avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking as much as possible. Limit your intake of fatty foods. If diarrhoea is your main symptom, limit dairy products, fruit, and artificial sweeteners. Increasing fibre in your diet may help relieve constipation. Avoiding foods such as beans, cabbage, or uncooked cauliflower or broccoli can help relieve bloating and gas.

COACHING CORNER by Dr. De La Flor Your actions, your words, and all your circumstances (and mine) can and should be elevated to a higher level. No matter how insignificant you think you or your situation may be, I’m here to tell you (boldly) that you are damn wrong. When you and I perform all our menial tasks with a supernatural outlook, our health reaches new heights. For you and I, there’s no menial tasks, no minutia, no irrelevant actions. Whether you’re changing nappies, serving a meal, selling a property, treating with love a patient on the wards, trying to find a job, refurbishing an apartment, closing a sale,

writing an article, welcoming tourist at a reception, if performed with love and rectitude of intention they will transform us. They’ll allow us to achieve higher levels of emotional, physical and spiritual health. Little things performed out of love magnify everything we do. I could either take your blood pressure with a stern face. Or instead I could take it while looking at you the way you need to be looked at that precise moment: with a gaze of compassion. This second way of taking blood pressure is at the heart of what I’m talking about. Rediscovering the greatness of doing ordinary tasks in an extraordinary manner is a goldmine.
