Chess Openings Moves – A Brief Introduction to the Opening Phase Chess opening moves refer to the first few moves that you make at the beginning of a chess game. These moves lay the foundation for the battle that will ensue later on in the game. The main goal of chess openings is to establish control of some of the most important squares on the board, all the while creating strong outposts from which you can attack the opponent or defend your side against the attacks of the other. Chess opening moves can be on the attacking or defensive side. While it can be useful to memorize certain opening maneuvers to add to your own repertoire, it is more important to understand the concepts and principles behind each move so that you can better apply them into your game.

Beginners tend to learn chess opening moves through memorization, although many experts believe that this isn’t necessary. As long as you know good opening principles such as developing your pieces and controlling the center, you will be better off establishing your opening game rather than merely memorizing moves. Just the same, certain openings that have been used by players and grandmasters prove to be useful in reinforcing good opening and middle game plans. Some good examples of classic chess opening moves include the Italian Game, Sicilian Defense, French Defense, Slav Defense, and the Ruy Lopez Opening. The Italian game is best for controlling the center using your knight and pawn and the putting your bishop on its most powerful or dangerous square. This particular opening also sets your king up for safety through castling. The Sicilian Defense, on the other hand, is a good choice for aggressive players on the black side, exchanging white’s central pawn for your own bishop’s pawn. This in effect, will allow you to control the center of the board.
