Ken McClain

Humphrey, Farrington & McClain Ken McClain, nationally known trial lawyer with the Humphrey, Farrington and McClain law firm will be the guest speaker at our July luncheon. Mr. McClain has a 30 year career in practicing law. He has tried many high-profile cases and has won many mulit-million dollar verdicts that are recognized in the top 100 verdicts list of the National Law Journal. Mr. McClain and his wife Cindy, own numerous businesses on the Independence Square that include several restaurants, a kitchen store, old fashion soda shop, Polly’s Pop, an art gallery and a men’s specialty store.

A Healthy Community Creates a Healthy Economy! If you’re in the Health Care Industry, we’re looking for you! NEW Committee being formed. Purpose: We will strive to educate Chamber members, community members, students and the media, on healthcare related issue as well as resources available in our community for healthcare. Members: Both Chamber members and non-members are welcome to attend this committee. In order to hold an office for this committee, individuals must be Chamber members and attend Healthcare committee meetings at least quarterly along with other programs and networking opportunities within the Chamber. Future goals of this committee: Committee members will become contacts for the community, providing needed resources and direction. The committee will also help businesses brainstorm wellness programs to be proactive in health and wellness. This committee will present Healthcare Symposiums to professionals, community members and students.

This committee will plan quarterly events related to health care professionals, providing education and networking opportunities. This committee will also plan an annual Healthcare Expo in conjunction with the cities Business Expo – in turn increasing the Chamber’s membership with Healthcare businesses. This committee will produce and disperse a Healthcare Directory which will be a comprehensive guide for understanding and using the healthcare in our community. Once produced, this publication will be updated annually. This is another opportunity too, for the Chamber to bring in revenue through advertising. When and Where: This committee will meet monthly at a designated time and place. Possibly meet at different organizations each month. TBD at the first meeting.

The Independence Affiliate of the American Association of University Women presented Nina Anders (owner of Scandinavia Place on the Independence Square) the 2017 Women of Achievement Award. The award recognizes her commitment of leadership, career, entrepreneurism, volunteerism and community service. Nina celebrates 30 years in business, opening Scandinavia Place during SantaCaliGon Days Festival Days Festival in 1987. Her store remains popular with locals and tourists from all over the world. Picnic on the Lawn

June 8, 2017 We enjoyed beautiful weather with over 200 of our Chamber members during our 5th Annual Picnic on the Lawn event. Some members played bags, yard games and some visited! All in all we were thankful for no rain! Thank you to all that visited!

June Membership Luncheon Fun in the Sun

June 21st, 2017 Those that attended the June luncheon were greeted by a special visitor! Maggie the Penguin entertained our attendee’s with her waddles and personality. Sean Putney, Senior Director of Zoological Collections, spoke about the improvements of the Zoo and the exhibits now on display. Sean also spoke about the corporate sponsorship opportunites available and how each of us can help support the continued efforts in the success of the zoo! In June we collaborated with the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce for a Federal Legislative Briefing. Representative Emanuel Clever, II was represented by Kelli Montgomery (Rural Development Coordinator). Senator Claire McCaskill was represented by Corey Dillon (Senior Regional Director). Senator Roy Blunt was represented by Tom Salisbury (Small Business Liaison). 37th Annual Chamber Golf Classic

Another success Chamber Classic Golf Tournament is in the books! On June 16th, 2017, over 150 attendess joined us for the 37th Annual Chamber Golf Classic. What a beautiful day on the Winterstone Golf Course. The day included 18 holes of golf, several games (including a Goofy Skirt Hole; where players could tee off from the women’s tee if they took a photo dressed in a skirt), a 50/50 raffle, free drinks and delicious breakfast and lunch catered by Big Biscuit and Carrabba’s.

Clean up Independence Day

June 3, 2017

Neon orange vests lined the roadside in Independence on June 3rd, for the Chamber’s first citywide clean-up day. Community volunteers “gave back” by showing their “Independence Pride” and helped to pick up trash along the roadside in 3 areas of Independence. We appreicate and thank all the wonderful volunteers that came out!
