Message from the President Chamber Members,

Since being appointed as President of your Chamber on March 1st, my first month on the job has been an incredible experience. I’ve immersed myself in every aspect of the Chamber operations and have been able to attend committee meetings, YIPs lunch and learn, ribbon cuttings, business before hours, LEAD class, the monthly luncheon, candidate forum, and numerous interactions with many of our members. What I saw was an infectious level of passion and enthusiasm for this Chamber which makes our future look very bright. Let me share with you a few thoughts on how we will continue to make the Chamber the pre-eminent business organization in our region: • The Chamber will continue to be actively engaged and highly visible in the community, even beyond the scope of just serving our members. Businesses who are not members will take notice and they’ll want to be a part of that. • We must provide value and show return on investment for our members. It isn’t good enough anymore to be a member just because “it is the right thing to do.” • We will ask for your feedback on our programming, events, and services so we can identify what is beneficial and brings value to your membership. • The delivery of programming and services needs to be on your schedule, not ours. Not every member has the flexibility to attend events or programs, but they should at least expect to have an option of getting that information “on demand” so be watching for more Facebook Live events and a resource library on the Chamber’s web site that you can access at your convenience. • The Free Enterprise Center was built by members for members and we are going to enhance it as a resource for our members allowing it to serve as a place to enhance your productivity, connect, and network with other members. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chamber, we have the opportunity to take this organization to the next level, but it takes all of us working together to make that happen. I encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas with me at or give me a call at 816-463-3510. It is an honor to serve as your President and together we will make the Chamber and Independence the best it can be. Tom Lesnak Independence Chamber of Commerce President

March 9th, 2018 On March 9th, Chamber members joined members of the Independence Police and Fire Departments and AMR for a special breakfast event. First Responders were recognized by City Manager Zach Walker and Chamber President Tom Lesnak, for their vital service to the community. As the Presenting Sponsor, Ron Finke of Stewardship Capital depicted an incident last year that resulted in first responders saving the life of an officer who was critically injured during a call to a ‘burglary in progress’. Julie Moreno, of the Examiner described a scenario whereby a firefighter doing his job, suffered career-ending injuries and another incident when dedicated professionals moved into a live shooter scene in order to treat injured parties, risking personal safety. The Cable Dahmer award for Outstanding Leadership was presented to Police Chief Brad Halsey for his dedication to Officer Tom Wagstaff’s wife and two young sons, his ‘other family’ of officers and to the community as a whole during a period of great anxiety and uncertainty. Brad’s steadfast leadership provided a strong ballast and direction for the department staff during what has been described as a traumatic time for the men and women within the department. The Chief’s unexpected award was followed by applause and a standing ovation by an audience of 250. Award recipients for meritorious service include the following individuals: Heroism: Billy Clark, Matt Heffernan, Barnett Cardin, and John Brown, of the Independence Fire Department Bravery: Jeff Weimhold, Jared Cogan and Ryan Waters, of the Independence Fire Department Dedication: Justin Selsor, Independence Fire Department Dedication: James Hull and JT Sullivan, American Medical Response Special Award for Outstanding Leadership: Chief Brad Halsey, Independence Police Department

March 20th, 2018 The Independence Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Metropolitan Community College-Blue River campus, hosted a public forum for City Council Candidates running for the two at-large positions in the April 3rd election. All four candidates in the hotly-contested race responded to questions prepared by Emmett Morris, adjunct Professor of Political Science. The candidates were provided the general topics, but not actual questions prior to the forum. Independence icon, Dick Wilson served as the moderator for the event which was attended by over 100 citizens. The event was live-streamed and made available on the Chamber’s Facebook at https:// More than 2400 had viewed the forum at the time of this printing. The purpose of the event is to offer a non-biased presentation and opportunity for citizen engagement prior to the election. Neither the Chamber nor the Metropolitan Community College-BR offer endorsement of any candidate. • Ensures out-of-state purchases are taxed at the same rate as local businesses. CHAMBER ENDORSES YES VOTE • Adds an estimated 1.5 million in additional revenue for vital city services like police, ON APRIL 3RD! fire and public works. • Allows the city to increase efforts on blight removal, infrastructure improvements, public safety and economic development.

Information provided by City of Independence

What is a Use Tax? The local use tax is a sales tax imposed on the purchase of goods by Missouri residents from out-ofstate vendors ONLY, those who don’t charge sales tax on purchases. If approved, the use tax rate mirrors the local sales tax rate.

What’s the diference between a sales tax and use tax? A use tax applies only to online sales, something our sales tax can’t do. Sales and use taxes WILL NOT and CAN NOT be applied at the same time. Shoppers would still pay 2.25% sales tax (Independence’s rate) at local retailers OR pay 2.25% use tax on purchases made online to out-of-state businesses with a physical presence in Missouri (Target, Amazon, Walmart, etc.).

Independence Civic Council February 26th, 2018

The Independence Civic Council heard a proposal by the Independence Square Association on their goal to participate in the National Main Street Conference, held in Kansas City in March. Members of the ICC voted unanimously to approve a request for $3000 for registration of ISA board members to attend this important annual conference. The ISA is dedicated to improvements on the Square that are in alignment with the City’s Strategic Plan and the goals of the Downtown Redevelopment Committee. The ICC promotes programs and ideas that have a positive and measurable impact on our city. For more information on how you can become a member of the Independence Civic Council, contact
