ICELAND GEOTHERMAL CONFERENCE

Regional Cluster workshop: Strategies for future collaboration 24 April 2018 - Reykjavík, Iceland

BACKGROUND Geothermal energy can play a substantial role in addressing the key global challenges of energy security, universal access and climate change, and offers vast local economic opportunities. In this context, geothermal industry clusters will play a critical role to scale up geothermal energy deployment. With the aim to improve business conditions, their role is to provide a forum for the industry to identify and overcome technical and non-technical barriers, to promote industry views towards governmental organisations, and to encourage research and innovation to improve geothermal technologies. Geothermal industry clusters from Canada, Europe, France, Germany, Iceland, Turkey, and the United States are key partners of the Global Geothermal Alliance, a coalition for action to increase the use of geothermal energy and facilitate the exchange of insights and

experience among policy-makers and stakeholders in the geothermal energy value chain. Bringing together geothermal clusters from all over the world, this Regional Cluster Workshop will discuss strategies that geothermal clusters can jointly develop and support to promote geothermal development globally and identify opportunities for future collaboration. Taking place under the framework of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA), the event was coordinated by the geothermal clusters of Iceland, France and Mexico (i.e. Iceland Geothermal, GEODEEP and CeMIEGeo, respectively), with the support of the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Industry partners of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) were encouraged to participate in the event.

OBJECTIVES

WORKSHOP SUMMARY

The workshop aimed at promoting cooperation among national and regional clusters by intensifying business network collaboration across borders and sectoral boundaries. In doing so promoting existing strategic, cluster partnerships and further strengthen international cooperation in new areas, e.g. technical and business development, innovation, mitigation of environmental and social impacts and community development, thereby facilitating the integration of international companies into the global value chains.

Participants were asked to answer the question “What can we, the organizations at this workshop, do to improve best practice in the geothermal industry?” Ideas were generated and grouped together. Below in bold are the names of the groups of ideas. The bulleted text below are the original ideas from participants:

Data sharing • Make an open data base and document base • Publish quantifications of success • Sharing experiences based on real projects • Share both successes and failures

FORMAT The workshop was based on structured brainstorming session. This is a proven way to generate ideas within a group setting. It is usually used in the beginning stages of a project, where the possibilities for the project are not clearly understood or defined. It provides a quick means for tapping the creativity of a limited number of people for a large number of ideas.

• Create a database to share information about practices in other countries • Integrated data management

Provide clear legal framework • Apply resources towards developing regulations and laws • Develop bilateral agreements with legal framework for sharing best practices • Clear rules of game • Guidelines from regulators to define best practice for industry

Introduce standards and certification • Make an international system of quality • Attempt to standardize laws and regulations • Preventive maintenance – create an international standard for well head and distribution maintenance • Certification body for geothermal companies • Building standards • Certification council for geothermal project implementation

Next participants were asked to answer the question “How are we doing, as a group or individually, in improving best practices?” To answer the question, participants had a discussion at each table. They took the group headings (the bolded text above) and gave it a grade from 1 to 5. One meant that we are doing quite poorly on the issue in question. Five meant that we are doing quite well.
