Baseball - Not just for Boys B

aseball jackets are warming up shop rails and hangers everywhere. On a recent shopping spree I found something that really made me smile, baseball jackets for women! Who would have thought that these manly sports garments would one day be stylish and sexy for women too?

I decided to look into how these masculine garments can be dressed down for that girl next door look, or glammed up for a night out with the girls – Both outcomes were pleasantly surprising and I have to say, the baseball jacket could very well be replacing my boring old black winter coat this season. 1. Winter for me is about layering, knits, hats and snoods. And no winter outfit is finished without a great jacket, coat or blazer to bring the whole look together. The baseball jacket does just that and is great for work and weekends. Try darker colours for work such as burgundy, maroon, navy and emerald green – colours that are neutral and compliment your other outfit choices. My favourite look for weekend day wear would have to be boyfriend jeans, an oversized cowl neck sweater (or any jersey that is a little

baggy) , a knitted beanie, high top sneakers and the baseball jacket to bring the outfit together perfectly – Comfortable, snug and warm

2. Taking the baseball jacket from day to night is simple, trade the sneakers for a pair of ankle boots or pumps, get rid of the beanie and try the fun bun or a messy braid and throw on a printed scarf and oversized clutch bag – This look is still casual but sexy enough to turn heads out and about – For the night opt for jackets with leather styling and trims or bright colours to compliment your shoe and bag accessories. Don’t limit yourself, be sure to check out the menswear department too – The baseball options there are great too and work well for women and men alike! This look is casual but sexy enough to turn heads wherever you go. There are many different styles and colours, the key to owning the look is finding a colour or style that best suits you and your situation (For tips and trends for a chic and stylish lifestyle, or to indulge in all things fashion, find me at www.stylishlymebytaryn.blogspot.com or email me at pommegrannit@hotmail.com or twitter @stylishlytaryn)

Days of the year: July

5th - Bikini Day Bikini Day is the anniversary of the invention of the bikini in 1946 by a Parisian fashion designer, Louis Reard. The goal of this holiday is to get to the closest beach, or find some cheap travel deals to the Philippines, Bali, Hawaii or anywhere with lots of beach, and spend the day in your bikini!

7th - Chocolate Day There are a number of dates throughout the year promoting variations of local, national or international Chocolate Day – our research leads us to believe that this is the true, definitive, purist ‘Chocolate Day‘, so celebrate with some of the high cocoa, rich, dark chocolate that makes you go tingly inside… Or failing that, stock up on chocolate biscuits, ice-cream and enjoy a day of secret treats and indulgence…

13th - Embrace your Geekness Day

In an age of social media, mobile technology and gaming consoles, it’s impossible to avoid being just a little bit geeky. Don’t fight it; jump head first into Embrance Your Geekness Day and show the world how intelligent, technically savvy and clever you really are!

23rd - Hot Dog Day A day for parades, events, and hotdogs in abundance. Celebrated all over the world, Hot Dog Day is an opportunity to raise money for charities whilst combining large quantities of sausages, bread, ketchup, mustard and onions.

24th - Drive thru Day For one day, Drive-Thru Day encourages you to live on the wild side. Forget about buying locally sourced produce, organic vegetables, and getting your five a day; sometimes you don’t have the time or energy to cook good, nutritious food from scratch, and on Drive-Thru Day you can take a short-cut without feeling guilty!

Chané Valentine by Franc dos Santos

Franc: Ok first things first, how did you come with stage name “Chané Valentine”, are you a diehard romantic by any chance ,hehehe? Chané: (laughs) I am such a romantic, it scares me sometimes. My name is Chané and my surname is van Rensburg. Two years ago I signed a record deal with one of SA’s most popular labels called Jewel Music and Universal Music South Africa. We discussed my future as an artist and decided to add an English surname to an Afrikaans name, so that we can broaden my horizons a bit and also include the English market in my music. Franc: You do acting, singing, dance and modelling but of the four, what’s your first love? Chané: My first love would definitely be singing. Singing has always been a big passion of mine but to be able to give a good performance on stage, you have to include acting and a bit of dancing to keep your performance interesting and that’s why I did acting and dancing as well. I love modelling, but more photographic than runway as I am very short in person haha! I have worked with fantastic photographers throughout my career. Franc: You went to one of the local schools when you were younger, what inspired you to get into the big world and try all these things? Chané: Although I created my own inspiration and had the urge to see what the industry is all about and how it works, a big part of my inspiration comes from one of the biggest legends in music and dancing, people call him the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson. I read his biography and bought all his albums. From a young age he started as a part of the “Jackson five”, he always inspired me the most. In my personal opinion, he was very talented and despite the fact that he a difficult childhood, he still rose above it all and for that I admire him. Franc: You’ve been all over the world, including a few places like Los Angeles & Cyprus, where was your favourite place to visit? Chané: My favourite place for an amazing holiday would definitely be Singapore. I fell in love with Singapore ever since my first visit in 2002. My dad is an electronic engineer and works for one of the biggest shipping companies in the world and he made it possible for us to see a few amazing countries. South Africa will always have my heart though. Franc: Have you met or worked with any big international stars?

Chané: Not yet but I am looking forward as to what the future has in store for me and I can’t wait. Franc: I’m sure a few guys would like me to ask this question, is your hit song “Liefies vir jou” aimed at someone special? Chané: …… a girl never kiss’s and tells (laughs) I like it if my music can mean something to me, but I like it even more if my music means something more to other people out there who have someone special in their lives. Franc: What has been your biggest live performance to date? Chané: My biggest performance to date would definitely be my performance as guest artist of the Miss Mediterranean 2013 contest finals in Cyprus, Turkey / Greece. It was so nerve wrecking at first, but the people there were wonderful to me and made me feel right at home. Franc: Who would say influenced your music? Chané: Most definitely my mother. Although I come from a very musically talented family, my mother has such a natural talent for music and plays drums and guitar so well by ear. When I was still a baby and could barely talk, my mother would always ask me: “Sing to me Nay, sing” and she’d sing along. So I think it all started about 18 years ago. Franc: If we want to catch any live performances that’s coming up where should we go? Chané: I have a stunning website with all my information on it and people can leave some messages for me to read: www.chanevalentine.com Franc: You have a new album out called “Liefies vir jou” , where can we get it? Chané: I’m so honoured as my album is available on iTunes and people can download it from there. My CD is also available in music stores nationwide. If they can’t find it, they can feel free to contact me via my website. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity Franc. Thank-you for your time Chané, and we know with the talent, hard work and dedication you put in, you will be a great success, may you keep the Vaal’s Flag flying high!

Interview with Blizzard a Professional wrestler

How did you get involved in wrestling? Back in 1997 I was watching Survivor Series and a match between Bret the “Hitman “ Hart vs. Big Daddy Cool Diesel. That is how my interest first started. I was a huge fan of Bret Hart. Ever since then I have been watching wrestling and I’ve always wanted to become a pro-wrestler but at that time it was very difficult to get into pro-wrestling. Later on in that year I saw a South African Wrestling legend, Terry Middoux and Danie Britz and that flamed my passion even more. At that time I was living in Kimberley and it was very difficult for me to get involved in the wrestling scene in South Africa as the hub of the wrestling scene was in Johannesburg. In desperation to live out my passion I started with amateur wrestling in Kimberley. Eventually we left Kimberley and after a few moves, we ended up in Sasolburg. In 2007 I started attending a small wrestling school in the Vaal Triangle. In 2008 I got into contact with Mark Biel from WWP and I was invited to a television shoot. Mark Biel suggested that I get in contact with Ananzi from APWA. I met Ananzi and he invited me to his training school. I started commuting to Johannesburg once a week in order to attend the training and to date I am still involved in this training school. When did you make your debut as a professional wrestler? My debut was for APWA at a show in Roodepoort. It was a tag team match And my partner was Danie “the pit-bull” Van Heerden versus Kilimanjaro and Kwaito kid. I remember being absolutely terrified facing Kilimanjaro Who stands at about 7 feet tall. We ended up losing that match though. We got beat up pretty bad. How did you get the name Blizzard? That’s very funny. When we were still at AWP just before our one show in Vereeniging, I was battling to come up with a name when literally moments before the match a wrestler called Wild Thing said to me “just go with Blizzard” I said to him that’s a crap name man, but I chose that name and it just stuck from that moment on. You appeared on the television show AF on channel MK. Tell us about that. I’m a big fan of Jackass

and crazy stunts. The guys from Af were at my shop in Sasolburg and we decided to do something crazy. They got into the ring with Blizzard and well it was not pretty for them. Can you tell us what was the biggest match you’ve ever been involved in? I’ve had so many but I’ve always enjoyed facing K.O as he is a very tough opponent who gives you a tough match. I loved facing a wrestler from Mexico called EL Mascarado. He is very skilled and has a style similar to WWE’s Rey Mysterio. Tell us about the average day in the life of Blizzard the APWA wrestler. I have to say that it is exciting. I can’t sleep the night before as I get nervous. I get up early and start off with some monster energy drinks. I don’t eat heavy food the night before either. We have a lot of fun with the other wrestlers and get up to naughty stuff. But once you’re backstage it’s all business and I prepare mentally so I can give my opponent a lot of pain and torture. Tell us how you respond when guys turn around and say wrestling is just an act? You know I’ve broken my leg in the ring and lost teeth. I’ve knocked guys out and even got my ribs broken on numerous occasions. Step in the squared circle and see if it is really fake, we’ve had guys try it and quit the first night as they can’t stand the heat. It’s a tough sport that’s also entertaining. Tell us about some of your accomplishments. I am a former APWA tag team champion and that was something that stands out. Loudmouth, my tag partner, and I beat a legend in SA Wrestling and his son in Polokwane to become the tag champions. Any advice for someone wanting to become a pro-wrestler? It is a tough industry where for years you are not guaranteed to make lots of money so I always tell people to get an education before they pursue this career. But also don’t give up on your dream. If a kid from Kimberley can do it so can anyone. Finally can you tell us where we can see more of the Vaal triangles very own pro-wrestler? Find me on Facebook under Blizzard as well as on www.ananziprowrestling.co.za... by Robby Setzer

Plank Exercises

O

ne of the best abdominal exercises you can do to get that six-pack is the plank. The plank is performed when standing on elbows/ hands and knees/toes, while the body is kept straight and muscles contracted. Trainers love plank exercises because they rely on body weight and increase your body’s stability without the necessity of an exercise ball or other equipment. Plank exercises can also help strengthen and tone your back, shoulders, thighs and butt. This makes performing planks one of the most effective fullbody exercises and a valuable move in your workout toolbox. While performing planks are an excellent way to build your core, there are variations you can do to achieve greater results, like six-pack abs.

Here are some ways to incorporate variety in your plank exercises: • Elbows and Knees: The classic elbows and knees plank is the best way to build up strength. It’s also a good starting point to boost endurance before trying more advanced plank movements. • Hands and Toes: Same as above, but more advanced while the body rests on toes and hands. • Side Plank: A side plank focuses on your obliques more than the traditional plank. You can perform it by placing one forearm on the ground, stacking your shoulders over your elbow, and either stacking your feet, or staggering them. • Plyo Side Plank: The plyo side plank takes the side plank to another level by having you perform a kick with your top leg while in the plank position. • RKC Hardstyle: The RKC Hardstyle plank requires full-body tension while holding the position. To perform the RKC plank, first place your elbows directly beneath your shoulders, with your forearms parallel, and your palms flat on the floor, fingers spread. Keep your body in a straight line, from head to heels, with feet and knees touching each other. Squeeze together your heels, knees and glutes. Press your palms into the floor, and without moving, pull your elbows towards your toes. Be sure to maintain a neutral neck position, by keeping your gaze towards the floor.

DANIE “PIT-BULL” VAN HEERDEN and SHIHAN JAMES VERMAAK

T

he Vaalpark Martial Art & Fitness Academy is well known and has produced many Provincial, National and International Champions in the sport of Karate, Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Shihan James Vermaak has been actively involved in the training and teaching of Martial Arts for the past 43 years. He has travelled abroad and competed in Karate and Kickboxing on International level numerous of times. Over the years he developed great fighters. One such fighter, Danie “Pitbull” Van Heerden, started Karate with Shihan James Vermaak when Danie was still a youngster. Shihan James recalls that Danie were always serious about fighting. He could have been called “Pitbull” from an early stage of his life as he never gave up, like a pit-bull dog once he got hold of you he never let go, once he had his mind on something he would attack his thoughts and never let go until he reached his goal. I remember Danie always asking why this and why that and what if……. Danie started training with Shihan James Vermaak at the Vaalpark Martial Art & Fitness Academy in Mixed Martial Arts in August 2009. He trained hard and had his MMA debut Fight on 30 August 2009 against Brandin Dean at Standard Bank arena. At the time of his first fight Danie had no fighting gear, not even a groinguard or MMA Pants and fought in my attire. He won his fight in the first round with ground and pound in 2min -56 seconds. At the time XFC was still operational and they turned Danie Pro with R1000 for that fight. Again the “Pitbull” won with his heart. On 3 October 2009 he fought two fights, The first fight was against Anthony Jardine and Danie won the fight within 2 minutes. Later the night he fought Sean Craig and this fight was tough and went the full three rounds. The “Pitbull” was caught by a lock around his knee and Sean almost broke the “Pitbull’s” leg, but typical of Danie he pushed thru with Shihan James, his coach at the time, coaching from the side. Danie pulled thru and won his second fight of the night. The “Pitbull” continued fighting and eventually started competing on the EFC Circuit where he now stand at 12 frights won and 5 fights lost. Danie will fight for the intern light heavy weight title on 27 June 2013 at Carnival City. Danie now also coaches private classes at the Dojo of Shihan James Vermaak on two Saturdays per month at the Vaalpark Martial Art & Fitness Academy. The Academy is situated in Vaalpark, Stormberg Street, next to Henberg in the old Foodzone Building. The Academy offers private, semi-private and public classes in Goju-Ryu Karate, Kick-Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, Fitness, Weight Loss & Body Sculpting, Bully-Proof For Children Programs, Self-Defense Classes and Courses and much more. Mwah!

ulle is jonk, sexy en vol lewenslus en energie. Hulle is “trendy, hip” en “cute”. Hulle is . . . Mwah!

Verspreiding – Next Music. A HEALTHY DIET:

A

ccording to the Cancer Association of South Africa evidence shows that choosing a healthy diet plays an important role in prostate cancer prevention. • Choose a low-fat diet. • Limit the intake of saturated fats (saturated fats should not exceed 20% of total fat intake) • Eat more fat obtained from plants rather than from animals. • Increase your daily intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. • Eat more omega-3 rich fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna and trout. • Reduce intake of dairy products, especially full cream variants • Drink alcohol in moderation • Maintain a healthy weight • Exercise most days of the week as regular exercise may reduce the risk or prostate cancer. • Discuss cancer risks with a medical practitioner at each routine visit.

Interview with Justin Serrao

I

met Justin last month at a show at an alternative venue in Jozi called Rumours, I didn’t really know what to expect as he started to set up. I have always had low expectations when listening to artists I have never heard before. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt because he had a charismatic nice guy appeal to him and the crowd did too. As he began his sound check the venue quickly began to fill up like ants to a sugar cube. He began his set with a few originals that had the audience captivated in what felt like a picture perfect movie moment. The crowd knew every word as he poured himself into every song. I was standing in awe, I have never been so impressed with an artist. He threw in some covers that kept the crowd on their toes and invited myself and last year’s Idols winner Dave Van Vuuren on stage to perform a song with him. I caught up with Justin after the show to share a drink and have a chat. 1. How did you first get into music? First started when my uncle would play his guitar around the kitchen Table, then in later years my brother and I would write songs and listen to Greenday, Offspring, Dashboard Confessional, Matchbox 20 and Limp Bizkit 2. Who has been your biggest influence? Dave Matthews 3. What are your thoughts on the SA music scene? Is it blossoming or dying? Blossoming! The amount of venues and festivals that are popping up is great. Also a lot of young

artists coming up and keeping us on our toes (Laughed Justin)

4. You finished in the top 33 in Idols in 2011. Do you think this helped your career? I think it definitely helped me by having the TV time although a lot of my “Success” has come from hard work. Idols is a great platform if you do it right, 5. Tell us about your debut album “Touching Toes without Clothes” It was my first solo Acoustic album, it contains stories about a certain time in my life with breakups, family and fun. It’s been good, I’ve sold 2000 albums since August last year. You can listen to the tracks on my Soundcloud page (www.Soundcloud.com/justinserrao) 6. What have the highlights been since going solo? The Tours around the country have been great, also playing the festivals like Splashy fen and STRAB in Mozambique have been cool also looking forward to Oppikoppi this year. Other than that going solo has its perks you don’t have to deal with difficult band members (Laughed Justin) 7. Where can people see you in the coming months? Oppikoppi Day of the dead festival Tanz Live on the 6th of July Rumours Lounge every Thursday in September Mamma’s Shebeen every Sunday in September Check out www.JustinSerrao. com for gigs 8. Describe yourself in one word Life Interview by: Adam Boyd

Wake to wonder to release 2nd studio album entitled Descarify W

ake To Wonder have been in studio for the last year writing and recording their latest album entitled ‘Descarify’ which is due for release in July 2013. After the release of their debut album entitled ‘Salubrious’ in 2010, Wake To Wonder hit new strides and toured South Africa vigorously as well as ventured on a European tour in 2011 which included performances in countries such as Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Germany. This steady string of gigs and tours across 2 and a half years gained the band respect amongst their fans as well as some big name celebrities. Wake To Wonder’s latest album ‘Descarify’ includes 10 songs and 2 live bonus tracks which were recorded at Redroom Recording studios. The band also wrote and collaborated

with Kwaito megastar Mandoza for one song called ‘Nigimandla’. The song intertwines Wake To Wonder’s rare brand of rock and Mandoza’s rough vocals and is expected to propel the band across to a different target audience. ‘I feel we have matured in our sound and lyrics, we put a lot into this album and inserted a lot of little sounds that the listener may only hear after several listens. The time spent in studio was well worth it and we are extremely happy with the end product. We cannot wait to start performing again after being cooped up in studio for so long’ said vocalist Adam Boyd. The band worked closely with award winning studio engineer ‘Jared Gunston’ who produced and recorded the album. ‘Descarify’ will be available online on Itunes, amazon, Look and listen as well as at shows on the bands upcoming tour.

Babalas The Movie D o you still remember the “Ja, Swaer”, “Ja, Boet” television commercial that introduced three wacky characters way back in the late 80’s? Yes, Boet, Swaer and Moegae and their Kalahari Oasis became well known in the Castrol advertisements. These three will soon be back with their uniquely South African humour, this time on the big screen in an all new quirky comedy, scheduled for release through Ster Kinekor on 2 August 2013. The film, BABALAS, is produced and co-directed by Peter Scott, owner of the video shop chain Mr Video. Although it’s his first time in the director’s chair, Scott has been involved in a number of films including Oh Shucks I’m Gatvol, Bakgat 2 and Angus Buchan’s Ordinary People. Ian Roberts (Boet), Norman Anstey (Swaer) and Fats Bookholane (Moegae) will return in this dyed in the wool home-grown quirky comedy. The three men had to grow with the times and now they are joined by the beautiful advertising agency worker, Mia (Tammy-Anne Fortuin) and Neef, (Zander Tyler, better known by his stage name Jack Parow), a new addition to the Kalahari Oasis. This ensemble embark on a road trip from the Oasis bush pub to Emperor’s Palace and on this journey things sometimes go haywire. The story of BABALAS is fresh and hilariously funny as one can expect with characters like these. The film synopsis:

awarded a promotion and a special bonus. Mia comes up with the idea to make the three guys from the old Castrol commercials, Boet, Swaer en Mogae part of the show. Her boss eventually agrees to this but she must go and find them in the Kalahari and bring them to Emperor’s Palace in time for the big gala event. She finds them but encounters huge problems. Will they get to the big show in time? This movie explores the comic interaction between all these heroic characters as they are desperately trying to save their beloved Kalahari Oasis. They bungle their way through side-splitting situations but somehow manage to come out on top ... or at least they think they do. Boet, Swaer and Neef inhabit their own insular but special universe. There are no sacred cows in their world and they tackle institutions and circumstances with refreshing irreverence resulting in outcomes we all love to see. Various music pieces also feature in the film where Jack Parow, Simeon, Die Radio Kalahari Orkes and others ensure that viewers get the best light comedy entertainment possible. The song and music video “Walk Away”, written and produced by Simeon Hamman, will also be released on radio and television towards the end of May 2013. s A great deal of the movie was shot at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg. Premiers:

Mia Moolman (Tammy-Anne Fortuin) works for a Sandton events co-ordination company. The company has been commissioned by the department of Trade and Industry to do an event celebrating the most successful ad campaigns in the history of the SA advertising industry. This gala event will happen at Emperor’s Palace. The CEO of the company, Theodore (Wynand van Vollenstee), has asked his employees to pitch ideas for the show and whoever comes up with the best idea will be

17 July – N1 City, Cape Town 18 July – Emperor’s Palace, Johannesburg The premiere on 18 July is very special due to the fact that it is also the birthday of Madiba. Official opening date in all Ster Kinekor Theatres nationwide – 2 August 2013. ICED will be at the premier, so keep an eye out for exclusive pics next month!

THE SHOWREEL MOVIE REVIEW Wreck-it Ralph 9/10 W

hen I watched this movie, I was transported to a time where we would save our old 20c coins to play the street fighter or Pac-man at the local fruit and veg, its nostalgic and brilliantly crafted. Ralph is the villain in the game Fix-it Felix but he has a heart of gold and believes he is meant to be a hero. He goes in search of a gold medal to confirm his status as a new hero but in the process causes endless havoc and jeopardizes the entire game arcade. Wreck-it Ralph is an absolutely stunning film comparable to the likes of The Lion King and Aladdin. I strongly recommend this film for watchers of all ages.

Parental Guidance 6.5/10 B

illy Crystal stars as Artie a Baseball Sport commentator in this very old school comedy alongside Bette Midler who stars as his wife Diane. Artie and Diane agree to look after their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents need to leave town for work. Problems arise when the kids’ 21st-century behavior collides with Artie and Diane’s old-school methods. Billy Crystal is the master of comedy and gives this typical kid comedy an edge over the rest. Parental Guidance is full of laughs, kids and adults will enjoy.

Game Review: Remember Me

H

ere’s the deal; the year is 2084 and people have the ability to share, upload and even remove memories (good or bad) - (it’s a bad idea...... now I really would know what you did last summer....hehe) Anyway, this technology is called Sensen and is run by a company called, Memorize’. Memorize now basically has the ability to control and see everything you think and do. Now, there’s a small group of terrorists called ‘Errorists’ and they’re mission is to take down Memorize. Unfortunatly, like all man-made things there are ‘memory addicts’ called ‘Leapers’ - these poor ‘junkies’ absorbed one too many memories and their sensen units then backfired, turning them into memory zombies that live in the sewers. You are Nillin - the best errorist ever, because you can steal and remix memories and you are about to be executed when some guy called Edge frees you, sort of..... After getting out of the sewers, Edge sends you on a couple of errands throughout NeoParis (a futuristic version of Paris - we, we). These errands include causing chaotic floods, beating a fight club wannabe celebrity and bringing down Memorize only to uncover more secrets...... The game has various elements

attached to it, like building different moves in the combo lab (there are 4 types - Pressen, Power, Chain and Cooldown), from damaging combos to healing combos and you do this by collecting PMP (Procedural Mastering Power), according to the developers there are over 50 000 combinations. You also have to alter peoples memories to keep yourself out of trouble and to get information and in some cases follow in the footsteps that they left for you. Most of the game is melee based combat, and persieved as a cyberpunk version of Assasins Creed. It’s quite enjoyable and is sure to turn into a cult classic. There were one or two bugs and glitches in the game, but nothing too hectic to throw you off. If you are a fan of science fiction and action adventure games, be sure to give this title a try. The game has a deeper meaning to it, but I’m not telling, instead look for a novel called ‘Nineteen Eighty Four’ by George Orwell, it’s kind of based on that, but just a bit more appealing. Memories are meant to be shared, but I think some memories should be kept sacred and unshared.......just a thought. By Corry Roets.
