This year 2011 has been a very eventful one for the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB). The most relevant piece of news is, without a doubt, the encouraging result of our participation in the Severo Ochoa program for ‘Spanish Research Centers/Units of Excellence’. Unlike other institutes funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya or the Spanish Ministry, the ICCUB is a university institute whose only source of funds are the overheads of projects funded by public national and international agencies, and awarded to researchers through open competition. Therefore it was clear from the outset that the ICCUB stood little chance of winning the Severo Ochoa award. We felt, however, that we ought to enter the contest. The foundational document of the ICCUB (from 2006) states that its aim is to become a center of international renown in the field of Cosmos Sciences and Technologies. This was therefore a challenge that we could not shy away from. We took part in this competition in order to find out whether or not we are on the right track. And indeed we are: the ICCUB was among the 22 centers (of a total of 76) selected for the final phase of the competition. Significantly, it was also the only university institute short-listed. This shows that, in the five years since its creation, the ICCUB has become one of the top research institutes in Spain, in all fields of study, and it has established itself as the foremost university institute in Spain. And all of this has been achieved without any external aid, at zero extra cost to the University of Barcelona and the administration. These results

prove that quality research can indeed be, and in fact is, carried out in a university environment, despite ill-conceived policies which, as of recent years, encourage universities to focus on teaching and lay research aside altogether –see for instance the new Catalan Law of Science, where no particular mention is made to universities. Conversely, many research-focused centers with strong support from the administration failed to pass to the final phase of the Severo Ochoa program. The lesson to be learned is that the Administration should measure the support provided to the research centers by objective standards. The reason I have brought this up is that our participation in the Severo Ochoa competition has made it clear that the support we could reasonably expect from the administration will be hard to come by and we must forge ahead by ourselves. The only noticeable feedback we have had from the Catalan Direcció General de Recerca is the advice to enter the 2012 Severo Ochoa competition under the CERCA institute in which one of the two ICCUB sections already participates. But, as long as the other section is not included in that CERCA institute, such a pretension would imply that the ICCUB splits in two, which we obviously cannot accept. This therefore leads to the following paradox: how can the Catalan universities gain ground in international rankings as we are often asked for by our political authorities if the most efficient university research groups are dismantled to build research centres directly pending from the Administration?

If this trend continues decisions on the staff will begin to be taken exclusively in view of the teaching needs of faculties and departments. It is not necessary to mention how detrimental this new politics will be to, especially, young researchers, and in particular, to ‘Ramón y Cajal’ fellows, who confer no small amount of prestige to our universities, and who tend to gather at the best universitary institutes regardless of teaching needs of faculties and departments. On the other hand, changes are underway in the governing bodies of public Catalan universities. The idea is that they will be ruled in future by a Board of distinguished members of so-called ‘civil society’ (prestigious businesspeople, financiers, solicitors, CEOs, …), appointed by the Parlament. According to their advocates, these measures should help universities ‘to better develop their task‘. I confess I do not quite understand. I fear that the ultimate goal of this maybe nothing but to ensure that public universities do not ‘squander’ resources; that they spend their time on ‘profitable’ endeavours such as training the labour the production sector demands, or carrying out low cost, applied research. Let it be said that I do not oppose the transfer of knowledge from the University to the corporate world. On the contrary, part of the research carried out at the ICCUB, though fundamentally basic, has an important technological component that directly impacts on society. Now though, it is one thing to encourage this knowledge flow, and quite another to subject public universities to the private corporate sector and forget about the role of universities as prime creators and transmitters of science, honored by many centuries. Thus, the ICCUB is clearly on the good track towards the research excellence that it aims to, but it is exposed to new serious threats. If we fail to address the situation, the changes that are being undertaken under the guise of the economical crisis will in a short time put an end to the flourishing of basic science in Catalan universities and halt the progress towards the desired ‘society of knowledge’ that was just now starting to take shape in our country.

Tasks achieved This group’s participation in the Lyman-alpha absorption analysis in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Third Sloan Sky Survey (SDSS-III) has resulted in simulated sets of the absorption spectra used in the analysis by the collaboration, and on ongoing work for the measurement of the Lyman-alpha autocorrelation and its cross-correlations with quasars, damped Lyman-alpha systems, and metal systems. Projects have also been carried out on neutrino effects on lensing clusters (in collaboration with IFIC at Valencia), and on Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies.

Multi-wavelength observations and theoretical modeling. MAGIC and Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Tasks achieved Several multi-wavelength campaigns have been undertaken during 2011. The most remarkable results are: a) From simultaneous observations with MAGIC and RXTE the first upper limits were obtained on the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the x-ray binary Sco X-1 in all the X-ray states of the source. These results may indicate that the underlying VHE emission physics is inherently different in the case of Sco X-1 and the detected gamma-ray binaries. b) Discovery of extended radio emission on milliarcsecond scales from the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057 through very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz. c) After observing PSR B1259-63 with the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) at 2.3 GHz (13 cm) on three epochs the first observational evidence was found that non-accreting pulsars orbiting massive stars can produce variable extended radio emission at astronomical unit scales. d) Observations of LS 2883, the massive companion of PSR B1259-63, conducted with the Very Large Telescope UVES detector, reveal that the star is hotter and brighter, and the binary system is more distant, than previously thought, implying a revision on the energetics of the high-energy processes taking place in the binary system. The theoretical work of the group has been focused on the thermal and nonthermal emission from gamma-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei, and on the dynamical evolution of, and radiation from, relativistic outflows in galactic and extragalactic objects. In this context, numerical simulations

of the hydrodynamics of interacting flows have been carried out, from which estimations of the nonthermal emission were derived. In addition, a semi-analytic model of the thermal X-ray emission from the shocked stellar wind in pulsar gamma-ray binaries has been developed. Theoretical studies on the possible observational signatures of the free pulsar wind in the gamma-ray binary PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 have also been conducted. At a more phenomenological level, work has been carried out on black hole disk-jet coupling, and on the mechanisms of jet production in neutron stars and young stellar objects (observations versus theory). A statistical correlation has also been found between gamma-ray sources and young stellar objects (YSO), supporting the presence of high-energy gamma-ray emission coming from massive YSOs and other young galactic sources. In parallel, progress has been made in the design and prototyping of the camera of CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array). Several ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) are being developed for readout and trigger electronics. In the context of CTA, simulations have also been conducted on the search for X-ray/TeV correlations, with and without delays, in simulated X-ray and CTA light curves of gamma-ray binaries. The possibility to detect spectral changes on our timescales and the significance of these detections have also been explored. Finally, some members of the ICC have joined the Strong Gravity Field Science Team for the LOFT space mission (competing for the next ESA launch for opportunity), and worked on observational tests for high frequency variability in black holes, which will be part of the science case for the mission.

Tasks achieved During 2011 the seeds of dark matter haloes have been characterized and their typical properties (inner structure, substructure, kinematics and triaxiality) have been modeled. The AMIGA (Analytical Model for Intergalactic-medium and GAlaxy evolution) code has been used to study the reionization history of the Universe and the evolution of Lyman-alpha emitters and Lyman-BreakGalaxies in the high-redshift Universe. The connection between global neutral hydrogen (HI) content and galactic properties has been investigated using data gathered from wide-area blind surveys. Likewise, algorithms have been developed both to trace the evolution history of galactic halos in N-body simulations and to separate bound from detached particles. This last task is part of an on-going research project that uses numerical simulations in the framework of the LambdaCDM cosmology to study the formation of galaxy groups.

Tasks achieved During 2011 the research has been focused on: - The use of the wavelet transform to improve the ability of image sensors to detect faint stars and moving objects using image deconvolution techniques. - The study of the effects of the curvelet transform over interferometric images. - The estimation of differential photometry in adaptive optics observations with a wavelet-based maximum likelihood estimator. - Obtaining super-resolution using additive-substitutive wavelets techniques on remotely sensed images. - Obtaining new high-sensitivity, milliarcsecond resolution results from observations of lunar occultations at Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

Robotic and remote astronomy.

Tasks achieved In 2011 the ICCUB has been involved in the following instrumentation projects: SIDE/MEGARA/BIG-BOSS: an important contribution took place in the development of the electronics for the fiber positioner built by the AVS Company (Spain). This positioner has had successive prototypes starting from the one for the SIDE/GTC to the MEGARA/GTC (3th generation) MOS spectrograph. Both will operate in the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC). The positioner is also proposed for the BIG-BOSS Spectrograph (NOAO-USA). MIRADAS is a 3th generation near-infrared multi-object echelle spectrograph for the GTC (expected operations for 2016). The ICCUB, as member of the MIRADAS consortium, is in charge of the design of the deployable probe arms with pickoff mirror optics. During 2011 the consortium has been created and a first design of the probe arms has been proposed. TFRM (Fabra-ROA Montsec Telescope): the improvement of the telescope has continued and the routine robotic observations have begun observing Extrasolar planets, Space debris (ESA program), near-Earth objects (NEOs), Optical counterparts of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and some X-Ray binaries (microquasars) WEAVE/WHT: The ICCUB has participated in the elaboration of the Science Case document of WEAVE, a multi-object spectragraph for the William Herschell Telescope (Canary Islands) expected to be approved in 2013 and operational by the end of 2016. This instrument will provide complementary on-ground spectroscopic observations for the Gaia mission (ESA).

Tasks achieved In 2011, the group has been involved in two FP7 projects, SEPServer and SPACECAST, and two ESA funded projects, “SREM-SPE Scientific Analysis extension” and SEPEM. Within the framework of the SEPServer project, the group has developed inversion methods for the deconvolution of solar energetic particle (SEP) events observed by the ACE spacecraft, Ulysses and Wind. The group has computed a database of electron Green’s functions of interplanetary transport for several spacecraft energy channels. Finally, it has applied the inversion methods to the study of an SEP event observed by both ACE and Ulysses. In the SEPEM project, a model has been developed for the description of gradual SEP events from 0.2 AU to 1.6 AU in the ecliptic plane, called SOLar Particle Engineering COde 2 (SOLPENCO2). The ICC researchers have simulated six SEP events as seen by 7 observers placed at different radial distances from the Sun. The resulting radial variations of the SEP peak intensities and event fluences are softer than those assumed in current operational models. In the scope of the SPACECAST project, the group has started a collaboration to self-consistently simulate the foreshock region. Its contribution to the SREM project has consisted in performing direct comparisons of individual SEP events from the SREM database using synthetic flux profiles from SOLPENCO2. Such comparisons have made it possible to test the capabilities of SOLPENCO2, as well as to identify updates and improvements.

Kinematics and structure of the galaxy.

Tasks achieved The work in the Gaia DPAC (Data Processing and Analysis Consortium) team is organised in cycles. New versions of the core processing software (IDT, IDU, IDA, IDV) are produced every six months. New simulations with updated characteristics are also produced every cycle in the MareNostrum supercomputer. These simulations are processed with the updated software from IDT, IDU, and meet the demands of the rest of European groups in accordance to the applications made by each group and the priorities established at the DPAC level. Each simulation can require up to a million hours of CPU usage. The photometry data processing group, on the other hand, has made progress in the convergence towards a calibration method for the spectrophotometry. Advances are also being made in broad-band modelling, including some unforeseen new models for IDT, and in the code for the selection of reference stars. The on-ground observational programme is complete up to an 85%. In addition to obtaining a good number of scientific results, this group has made great progress in the preparation of the Spanish scientific community towards Gaia. Scientific activity is in progress too in the framework of the Marie Curie Research Training Network “Gaia Research for European Astronomy Training (GREAT)” and the Gaia-ESO Spectrocopic Survey.

Tasks achieved The effect of chiral mechanical fields on the induction of molecular chirality, as detected by Mueller matrix chiroptical methods, has been demonstrated. This in the case of low hydrodynamic torques exerted by macroscopic flows showing 3D gradients of velocities (torque) upon species of shape and size that can be aligned in laminar flows. Therefore, mechanical chiral fields should be included in the few physical chiral forces that can induce chirality at the primordial scenarios (astrophysical or planetary) of the chemical evolution.

Scanning of Circular Dicroism (CD) and Circular Birefringence (CB) inside a 10 mm pathlenght cuvette for clockwise (CW), counter-clockwise (CCW) and stagnant (no stirring). Outflows, jets, and accretion disks in low- and high-mass young stellar objects. Jets in planetary nebulae. Computational models of star-forming clouds and star formation.

Tasks achieved The chemical evolution and physical conditions of low-mass and high-mass star forming regions has been studied through the observations of selected tracers of molecular gas and water maser emission at cm, mm, and submm wavelengths. The physical and excitation condition of Herbig-Haro objects at visible and near infrared wavelengths has also been studied, using Integral Field Spectroscopy. A new analytic model has been developed to predict the star formation rate in turbulent clouds, including the effect of the magnetic field. The first systematic study of the star formation rate based on large numerical simulations of supersonic turbulence with sink particles has also been developed, demonstrating the accuracy of the theoretical model. The accuracy of prestellar core mass determinations has been tested from continuum observations, using simulated observations generated with radiative transfer codes and data from numerical simulations. It has been shown that the mass distribution of prestellar cores is in general different from the stellar initial mass function (IMF), but can nevertheless be used to constrain the IMF by selecting cores more massive than twice their Bonnor-Ebert mass. Finally the evolution of small dust grains in circumstellar disks has been studied and it has been demonstrated that turbulence can create very dense clusters of small dust grains. However, it has also been shown that the probability that such clusters are dense and massive enough to collapse as planetesimals is negligible.

Quantum and semiclassical gravity. Black holes and gravity: New perspectives from strings and higher dimensions.

Tasks achieved The research made during 2011 has been focused in: - AdS/CFT correspondence: The radiative loss of heavy charged particles in SU(N) (super) conformal field theory (SCFT) has been computed to all orders in 1/N. Gravity duals to strongly coupled anisotropic plasmas have been constructed. A realization of walking dynamics for technicolor models has been proposed. - Particle phenomenology: The calculation of effective couplings between supersymmetric particles including radiative corrections has been implemented into MadGraph, to be used for LHC observables. - Semiclassical quantum gravity: The two-point correlation function of the stress tensor of a minimal scalar has been calculated to one loop in a de Sitter invariant vacuum. A discontinuity in the massless limit has been identified. - Cosmology: The possibility that Minkowski vacua can be metastable has been argued, as well as the fact that its possible decay through bubble nucleation need not be catastrophic. - Higher-dimensional black holes: An effective worldvolume theory for charged black holes and branes has been developed. Critical phenomena at horizon intersections have been identified.

Tasks achieved The Theoretical Particle Physics Group has a wide spectrum of interests ranging from string theory to theoretical cosmology and including many aspects of gravitation, nuclear physics and particle theory. In 2011, its activity has been influenced to a large extent by the commissioning of the LHC. The group has continued to study some aspects of supersymmetric theories, flavour physics (particularly b-physics) and physics beyond the standard model that the LHC will explore in the coming years. Several key features of heavy ion collisions have received particular attention. In this domain of physics, techniques such as the AdS/CFT duality meet nuclear phenomenology and effective theories and there is substantial cross-fertilization. Very relevant contributions have been made in neutrino physics, cosmology and the physics of black holes. String theory and gravitation have been studied thoroughly too; some remarkable formal results have been obtained in this field by ICC researchers.

Tasks achieved LHCb Experiment The LHC accelerator has been collecting data all over 2011 at an unexpectedly high rate: the instantaneous luminosity levels have overcome the ones predicted in the initial design. The LCHb experiment has been able to collect proton-proton collisions with a high efficiency (more than 93%) at a final rate (after the processes passed the “trigger” filter) of 3khz of events recorded in disk, that resulted from a total of 1/fb of data. All of this has been possible due, in part, to the fact that the SPD sub-detector has functioned without incidences. On the one hand, this sub-detector, which is a fundamental part of the calorimeter, has enabled the selective filtering of forty million events every second. On the other hand, the SPD has been used to classify the events according to the multiplicities of the proton-proton interactions. The analysis of this data set has started immediately. As a result two PhD theses have been defended. The first one has made the most of the work of the ICC researchers in the event filtering processes (“trigger”), and has associated a second reconstructed trace to the first muon identified in each

collision. The second PhD thesis is based on the calibration of the decay amplitude of a B boson into two muons. The result, which was presented at the summer Europhysics Conference on High-Energy Physics, had a significant impact, due to the fact that it allows the measurement of deviations from the current model, or the establishment of hard limits to the possible extensions of said model. At the same time, due to their implication in the calorimeter, through the SPD, the ICC researchers have tried to use their experience in photon reconstruction to measure B boson decays involving a photon in the final state, such as B--> K* and B--> . In particular, the ratio between the production cross sections of both processes was measured. Most of the data analysis involving B meson decays requires knowing in advance the flavor of the reaction. The ICC researchers have adapted their continuous effort in this way to the operation conditions of the LHC, different from the ones expected in the initial design, until obtaining competitive levels of tagging which allow for measures of CP symmetry violation. Cloud and GRID distributed calculus The implementation environment for distributed calculus systems, DIRAC, developed as a contribution for the LHCb, has caught the interest of several international collaborations that are considering the use of DIRAC to homogenize and simplify their access to calculation facilities in distributed environments, such as in Grid and Cloud computing. Recently CTA has expressed an interest in this software, and it has consequently become a new point of contact and synergy between the astrophysics and particle groups of the ICC-UB.

Tasks achieved During 2011 the research in this area has been focused on: - Low-energy lattice QCD, effective field theories, hadron physics and strangeness in nuclear physics: volume dependence of baryon masses and extraction of baryon-baryon binding energies in lattice QCD, constraints on the effective field theory description of the weak strangeness changing  −N interaction, charm mesons and baryons in hot and dense nuclear matter, − nucleon interaction and nuclear bound states. - Heavy ion collisions: hydrodynamical simulations of relativistic heavy ion collisions at ALICE@LHC, effect of the random fluctuations in the initial state on different flow components. - Nuclear structure and the nuclear equation of state: parity violating electron scattering in the conditions of the Pb radius experiment at JLab, relativistic energy density functionals with a meson, pairing in nuclei, superfluidity in trapped fermions, role of the tensor force in the nuclear symmetry energy, latent heat in the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. - The gauge/string duality has been used to study properties of quantum chromodynamics, in particular those of its deconfined phase created in heavy ion collision experiments, namely the quark-gluon plasma.

General Relativity: Reference Systems and Dynamic Systems Lines of research

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet spherical symmetric solutions in 5 and 6 dimensions.

Tasks achieved In 2011 the ICC researchers have worked, in collaboration with the University of Salamanca, in stationary stellar models with axial symmetry, making analytic approximations with two parameters, one related with the intensity of the gravitational field and the other one with the speed of rotation. Both parameters are small for neutron stars. Some solutions for several barotropic equations of state have been found. It has been seen that any of these interiors can have a Kerr solution as an exterior. Finally these analytic models have been compared with numerical results for the same problem, checking that the proposed analytic models give a very accurate approximation even for not too slowly rotating stars. Another field of research has been manifolds of dimension greater than 4. Einstein-Gauss-Bonet equations with quadratic terms are the ones suitable for the study of solutions in 5 and 6 dimensions. Non-stationary solutions with spherical symmetry have been studied to describe collapse in 5 and 6 dimensions. This research has been carried out together with scientifics of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA, Pune, India).

Low energy properties of many-body quantum systems. Quantum error correction. Topological order. Ultra-cold gases. Quantum simulations.

Tasks achieved The research of the group can be roughly divided into five topics: 1. Multiparticle entanglement Quantum entanglement is a form of correlations that makes quantum systems strikingly depart from the behavior predicted by classical physics. A basic, but to date quite unsolved, problem is the description and construction of maximally entangled states for many particle systems. The ICC Quantum Information group is trying to make progress in this direction. 2. Low energy properties of many-body quantum systems Many-body quantum systems play an essential role in quantum physics. The nature and the amount of entanglement present in these systems generally dictate how difficult it is to describe them. Remarkably, many interesting quantum systems are only moderately entangled. Tensor network states constitute a class of variational ansatz designed to exploit this property. The ICC Quantum Information group uses these tools in order to study the low energy properties of a variety of model systems, such as interacting spin systems.

3. Quantum error correction Tensor network states are also relevant when trying to better understand the difficulties involved in the construction of a quantum computer. Ideally, such a device should be a many-body system that could be prepared in an arbitrary state and over which reliable measurements could be performed. A quantum computer would be extremely sensitive to imperfections, due to interactions with its environment. Quantum error correcting codes aim at fighting this effect. The ICC group tackles this issue with the tensor network formalism. This work has led it to investigate new methods that could be useful in treating disordered quantum systems (typically exhibiting many local minima). 4. Topological order Topologically ordered systems are essentially condensed matter realizations of topological field theories. The ICC Quantum Information group investigates classification problems, the nature of a phase transition between topological phases, and their experimental detection. 5. Ultra-cold gases Ultra-cold gases have started to be sufficiently isolated in real experiments that their quantum behavior can be neatly made manifest. The ICC group aims at understanding such systems when they are manipulated with lasers and what can be done with them. 6. Quantum Simulation We study the possibility to manipulate a quantum system in order to extract information about Statistical Mechanical systems, in particular the Ising model. We study the mutual simulatability of Statistical and Quantum Mechanics, as well as the possiblity to use a coherently globally controlled quantum system to get information on Ising models.

Tasks achieved The group develops and maintains the general-purpose Monte Carlo code PENELOPE for the simulation of coupled electron-photon transport in complex material structures. The group has worked on applications in electron spectroscopy, electron-probe microanalysis, and dosimetry of synchrotron radiation beams. Extensive calculations of cross sections of inner-shell ionisation of atoms by charged particle impact have been performed and implemented in PENELOPE. Finally, simulation tools for radiation protection in ultra-intense laser facilities are being developed.
