Perforated feature wall representing the patterns featured on Sydney’s Hawkesbury sandstone.

Image sampling in grasshopper is used to interpret an image of the sandstone into perforations that can be cut out of aluminium cladding.

Victoria Cross Metro Internal cladding

The interior cladding of Victoria Cross Metro Station features both aluminum and Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) panels, totaling more than 4500. The cladding is modelled in grasshopper using a parametric script that allowed changes and modifications to be made easily.

Using grasshopper the internal cladding is automatically scheduled by type and size. An automated workflow between Grasshopper and Excel allows the schedules to be styled and exported where they are paired with a matching 3D view of the cladding.

1 :function Single The cut and fill is calculated usingSection a grasshopper thatLevel inputs an Option existing topographic mesh and a proposed ground mesh. A grid of points is projected onto the proposed topographic mesh. We then can measure the distance these points are vertically from the existing topographic mesh. This distance multiplied by the area of one grid cell represents one block of volume. All the blocks bellow the existing topography will need to be cut away and all the blocks above will need to be filled in. The denser the grid is the more accurate the calculations are but the longer the function will need to compute.

This method is very useful in the early and iterative stages of a project. Once set up a user can play with the proposed topographic mesh in Rhino and in real time see the effects their changes make on cut and fill volumes.

In this project we played with the mesh in a quest to reach equal cut and fill volumes which is usually the most economical solution for a project. Traditional solid boolean methods of calculating cut and fill take far longer to compute and require perfectly clean geometry 1

Referencing a section line drawn in Rhino, Grasshopper slices through the model with a plane, generating intersecting curves. These curves are organized according to their parent layer in Rhino and export as linework suitable for either Illustrator or Photoshop. Already sorted, the linework can easily be styled using a pre-saved style template.

In this project we narrowed down two options that we want to represent in section for the client. Here a Grasshopper script is used to automatically export the section’s linework to Illustrator or Photoshop where it can be styled.

Shadow analysis Analysis of existing and proposed developments on overshadowing and ADG Requirments

To verify exactly which shadows are caused by which buildings an overlaying technique is used to separate shadows casted by different types of buildings. In this case there are four types of buildings we want to separate. This overlaying method is done using an automated workflow between Rhino’s sun simulator and Photoshop.

To further Investigate which specific building is overshadowing at certain hours of the day a series of sun-eye views are captured. This is done using a grasshopper function that inputs sun positions from epw weather data (Ladybug) and uses them as directions to point Rhino’s camera.

Ordered Unit Tagging For this project, it is essential to tag the units of two high-rise residential buildings in a clockwise sequence, commencing from the lift shaft. With the help of Rhino inside Revit, Grasshopper is able to extract building information from Revit, automatically perform the task and the seamlessly push the unit tags back into Revit.

Grasshopper references units, floor plates and lift shafts as 3D volumes from Revit.

These parameters are referenced in the unit tags and displayed on floor plans.

Unit and floor plate volumes are grouped by level.

Grasshopper pushes the new unit tags back into Revit as parameters linked to the units.

The outlines of the floor plates are extracted and welded closed at the point perpendicular to the lift shafts.

The centre point of each unit is pulled to the closest point to the floor plate outline.

The units can then be sorted based on these positions.

The position of these points along the floor plate outline is evaluated.

Site building model and context

For this project two site locations are analysed, and the results can be displayed in two main ways.

Location 2: Nanum QLD

Location 1: Sydney NSW The tool analyses a building space and identifies the most suitable plant type based on a scoring system. The user inputs a building model they intend to analyse with the tool, its surrounding context, and a site location. The tool then subdivides the building into spaces and performs a series of environmental and structural analysis on each space. ney : Syd

Each subdivided space can be color-labeled according to its best-suited plant type.

The analysis results for each space are compared with the requirements of each plant type. The user chooses which plant types they are interested in growing on their building and tool inputs their requirements as a database. The plant type that achieves the best (lowest) score is identified as the most suitable choice for the space.

Alternatively, if the user wishes to focus on a specific plant type, each space can be ranked based on its suitability for the chosen plant, represented with a gradient. In the above diagrams the plant Tecomanthe Dendrophylla is tested.
