Religion without a foundation of knowledge cannot be practiced or understood. Otherwise, then religion or any spiritual practice or teaching becomes illusion or guess work. It becomes “blind faith.” Certainly, this cannot be the way to practice religion. Only the pursuit of knowledge can lead the human being to an understanding of the Divine. In Sufism, knowledge is essential and is at its core. To a Sufi, knowledge is like a buried treasure to be discovered. Sufi teacher and co-Director of the International Association of Sufism, Nahid Angha, Ph.D., writes: The Sufi is that individual who finds the gem of the knowledge in the depth of her being, and seeks to know it through annihilation into it.
