PROJECT 01: “THE SKIN IN THE GAME” Partners- Hannah Larsen & Tuyen Le “Skin in the Game” engages the notion of the built envelope: the shell, the surface, the skin upon which architectural intentions are etched. Building envelopes mediate between interior and exterior, providing the interface between open and closed conditions. Considering the composition of the building skin provides a first exercise in developing formal vocabulary for studying architecture. In this project, we were to design a pavillion that would encase a given artist’s work, in this case Juame Plensa.
CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES AND ABSTRACT REPRESENTATIONS The “Skin in the Game” began with the research of two given precedent studies. In our team’s case, our studies were Carver Hall at Iowa State University, and La Tourette located in Lyon, France and designed Le Corbusier. Through our exploration, we were to take an in depth look at the dominant design characteristics of these two precedents. In this process, we created on site sketches and sketches from photography. From our conceptual sketches and observations, we furthered our analysis by creating abstract representations.
SKETCH MODEL From our analysis of our two precedent studies, we drew inspirations that would lead us to our model iterations. Both Carver Hall and La Tourette exemplify a brutal style that we continued in our design idea with the chosen construction material of our structure which was concrete. Aside from an architectural style connection, we included La Tourette’s enclosed courtyard layout. Our courtyard would allow for a space where Juame Plensa’s famous public art could be viewed from the interior and exterior. In addition, the second floor ribbon windows create an interesting moment which can also be seen from inside and out. An outside viewer would be able to understand the interior circulation of the building by watching lower halves of crowds maneuver through the floorplans. From inside the building, the lower windows provide a great amount of space for large canvas artwork of Plensa’s to be hung above while letting in an amount of daylight that would’t harm any artwork.

PROJECT 02: PAPE BIRD OBSERVATION TOWER Partners- Hannah Hogan & Ahmed Mohammed Architecture is not experienced (nor conceived) as a single moment, but rather as a sequence -- influenced by human observation, movement, and occupation, with experiences affected by conditions occurring before, during, and after one encounters a space. What is observation? Is it more than just experiencing your environment through site? How can architecture influence observation? In this project we were given the task to develop an observation tower for the recently lost bird observatory at Pape Nature Park in Latvia.

ADA HAYDEN SPATIAL SEQUENCES These photo collages were created from personal photography from our class trip to the park. This trip helped us realize differenct aspects of observation, especially when you choose to venture the beaten path.
LATVIA MACRO-ANALYSIS Our macro-analysis of the country of Latvia forced us to peel back layers of information and disect them individually. This method is extremely benifical in gaining an understanding of different aspects of an area and where they are located. Below are some general topics of analysis of Latvia.

PAPE PARK SITE PLAN AND INDIVIDUAL CONCEPT Before joining with partners, we were to come up with individual conceptual ideas of an observation tower based on a given precedent study. Initually, I designed a four story tower with an interior winding stairway surrounded by verticle cedar louvers and trapazoidal corten steel pieces. The verticle louvers would create visual expansion moments out onto the ecosystem as you winded your way to the top observation deck. However, in the end it was decided that the tower was too tall and disruptive to the site, and intimidating not only to the eye but maybe even birds. COMPETITION IDEATING Through group sketching and communication, we were able to develop all three ideas into this minimal style bird observatory. It accomplished our main goals of observation, non-disruptive, and movement.
PROJECT 03: DOWNTOWN AMES INFILL PROJECT
The finnal project of ARCH 201 is a downtown dwelling in Ames. The task is to design a replacement building (or to infill a pocket park) that can become a place for observation, and to be observed, on a designated site in downtown Ames. In addition, the design must in a way aid the effort of activating downtown. For this final exploration, all of the skills that have been developed through the semester (precedent analysis, experiential spatial qualities, faรงade composition, the architectural modulation and ltration of light, and two- and three-dimensional representational methods) are put to the test.
DOWNTOWN AMES SITE ANALYSIS Project 3 began with once again, our site analyis. I observed three main criteria, circulation, traffic density, and green area of the downtown area. Something I noticed from my study was the lack of green space. While also studying the downtown businesses, I found it fascinating how large of crowds the weekly farmers market would draw in. These two observations would lead to my final concept of developing a plant research center where people could grow and harvest their own produce, while also learning, observing, and interacting with plants.
INITIAL PRECEDENT STUDY In my initial design process, I strongly focused on maintaining the circulation from the south parking lot to Main Street rather than blocking it off. This lead to my idea of building underground. I chose the California Academy of Sciences as a precedent study mainly due to its iconic green roof. The domed shapes were eye catching to me and in my eyes, created movement which was my goal. In addition, the pot-hole sunlights would be an excellent source of daylight for a completely underground work of architecture.
CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES RENZO PIANO
IDEATING PART 1 There was no other work of architecture in Ames, like what I had in mind for the pocket park of Main Street and that inspred me. The idea of a green roof suited my program tremendously and would even activate my program by allowing an area to grow and observe plants on site. However, the achilles heel to my design was the lack of underground space. With a site of only 25â€™x75â€™, the underground plant center would be extremely unefficient and therefore it was ruled out.

IDEATING PART 2 For my second attempt at a structure for my plant research program, I took a more simple apporoach. I designed a minimal, geometric triangle shaped building from the process of my 1/16th inch scale mass modeling. Once again, I strived to maintain circulation, but this time, I created a five foot wide pathway that would lead people past the open glass east facade forcing them to engage with the architecture. Not only was there an extra floor for double the interior space, I continued the idea of a green roof, only this time, it would be a terraced garden. The garden would have seating and individual community green patches where people could grow their own produce. In addition, the terraces would create an amphitheater for observation below. But once again, I was left unsatisfied. I wanted to create more of a statement downtown, and to build something like nothing else in Ames, or even Iowa. This lead me to my third and final iteration.

SECOND PRECEDENT STUDY The art of inserting a building into an historical city block means engaging in an open, physical dialogue with those already there. Building onto an extant structure also presents an opportunity for a more widespread renovation project, a reclaiming of space. The new headquarters of the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé is an unexpected presence, a curved volume one glimpses floating in the middle of the courtyard in which it sits, anchored on just a few supports. On the ground, there is a stand of birch trees, a floral island set in the dense mineral context of the city. -ARCH Daily / Renzo Piano After my minimal, and geometric previous design, I was convinced that a building regarding plants must be organic. While studying organic architcture, I couldnt helped but to observe the monstrosity that lied between two, what seemed to be historically preserved buildings. Renzo Piano’s design of the Pathe Foundation is a prime example of biomorphic architecture, an extension of organic architecture which deals with naturally occuring shapes. I believed that this style of architecture could check off everything I was trying to create.
ORGANIC INSPIRATION Rather than creating a random curved shape, I wanted the architecture to have a meaning behind it and a source of inspiration. To find this, I studied Iowaâ€™s natural ecosystem, tallgrass prairie. I set on a common native plant to Iowa commonly called milkweed. Milkweeds have pods that house its pollen and is naturally attractive to butterfliess. These pod forms inspired the form of my architecture.

The programming of the Ames Plant Research and Extension Center ascends from public to more private and secure floors.The first floor serves as the greeting area to the floors above as well as a means of circulation from the rear parking lot to Main Street. The second floor houses an exhibit floor where monthly presentations of an array of botany from Iowaâ€™s rich tradition in agriculture, to the future of farming and world hunger. At the third floor sits a classroom large enough for 18 students.This floor will help people grow their knowledge of plantlife through weekly classes and hands on interactice activities. Lastly, atop lies the tranquil fourth floor that is entirely encased in a glass dome. Underneath that dome and at the fourth floor lies a study area with a large table and rollout bookshelves. This will be an important place for local researchers to gather their information from the nearby sites of the extension plan.
