1 2 Ian Greene Jr. I believe that every design should have meaning. Stephen Gardiner once said, “Good buildings come from good people, and all problems are solved by good design. I believe that this compilation of works represents what I believe as student of design and competently shows my proficiency and ability to communicate my ideas through the development of my thought process.

The Merger

South Bend, Indiana, USA

This purpose of this project was to Correlate design components through comprehensive thinking and integration. The project was a mixed used development, consisting of two big box stores (Aldis and REI) A health club including a pool, Speculative commercial, Residential units (180 units) and on site parking for all included. The design intention was for the site to be an active and successful space, bridging the surrounding areas. Thus providing a mixed use block with proper frontage, eyes on the street without losing the sense of order and dĂŠcor. With the correct placement of structures based on form and function, I derived a simple correspondence or balance of design components through comprehensive thinking and integration. This entire project was modeled in BIM (revit) and rendered with enscape.

Context Map South Bend, Indiana

The Site This project was located in the business district of South Bend Indiana. Surrounding the site mostly North and East are a few residential developments and shelters like the Hope center and the Salvation Army. The South Bend Cubs baseball Stadium is located to the West and to the To the south of the site there are railway tracks and a bus terminal, these serves as the boarder to the industrial district of the city. Site Plan

This location the site is in was once known for its urban nature, where people walked about and interacted with the spaces. That has since declined and the city wants to revive the life it once had especially in the business and industrial districts. The project demonstrates the interrelation between city life and walk-ability that is needed in order to be successful with the restoration of these districts.

Hinkley Commons

Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA

This Project was done in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The client wanted a residential development but designed with the use of shipping containers. The design intent and parti concept was the old railroad and the units were developed to look like a train on a track. The scheme was chosen to emulate the art district in the local area. Due to the climate and the limited space the container provides the design opened to nature with a shed roof to allow more head space and natural light. It also opens up to the outdoors to allow the large porch area to serve as extended space. This Project was completed using only hand drafting.

Sketching and Watercolor

The ability to visually create or recreate ideas have always been important to me. I am fortunate that i can visualize my ideas through sketching and in sketching, I have found that this amplified my ability to understand buildings and how they are designed. This section of the portfolio displays some of my freehand sketching and rendering representation through mediums such as pencil ink and watercolor.
