Introduction of Ian Hall Casual Relief Teacher Information Technology Trainer

I have been using iMindMap versions over 10 years and will until I pass away. I have done mind maps into journals and personal diary over many years. I was primary teaching in WA from 1981 until 1997. Since then doing casual relief teaching in Melbourne, Bendigo, Inglewood and Ballarat primary schools for past 5 years. I have used Tony Buzan in many lessons. I still undertake iMindMap on A3 paper with textas of many colours. I have undertaken many training sessions with parents, teachers, and students on mindmapping e.g.: info on Ned Kelly or planning events for schools. Tony Buzan deserves a medal for coming up with the sanity-saving concept of Mind Maps, which make difficult mental tasks possible, even pleasurable. Here is a mind map on the topic of Teaching Tips.

Or try the 7 Steps to Making a Mind Map Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

13

1. Start in the CENTRE of a blank page turned sideways. Why? Because starting in the centre gives your Brain freedom to spread out in all directions and to express itself more freely and naturally. 2. Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for your central idea. Why? Because an image is worth a thousand words and helps you use your Imagination. A central image is more interesting, keeps you focused, helps you concentrate, and gives your Brain more of a buzz! 3. Use COLOURS throughout. Why? Because colours are as exciting to your Brain as are images. Colour adds extra vibrancy and life to your Mind Map, adds tremendous energy to your Creative Thinking, and is fun! 4. CONNECT your MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect your second- and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. Why? Because your Brain works by association. It likes to link two (or three, or four) things together. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily. 5. Make your branches CURVED rather than straight-lined. Why? Because having nothing but straight lines is boring to your Brain. 6. Use ONE KEY WORD PER LINE. Why because single key words give your Mind Map more power and flexibility. 7. Use IMAGES throughout. Why because each image, like the central image, is also worth a thousand words. So if you have only 10 images in your Mind Map, it’s already the equal of 10,000 words of notes! 16

The Swiss Army Knife of the brain Our brains are divided into the left and right cortex. The left side is dedicated to tasks involving order, logic, words, lists, numbers and analysis, the right side deals with rhythm, colour, imagination and daydreaming. If we want to improve memory, learning and thinking skills we have to use our whole brain. (Ref 1)

“MindMapping, according to the real Buzan, is about image and association. It’s a metalanguage that geniuses across history (think Leonardo) have tapped into by connecting thoughts with images. A typical MindMap has a central theme, and radiating from it, a series of connected words and images. For Buzan and many users of mindmapping, it’s a way to take notes and connect ideas that fits more perfectly with the brain’s way of doing things than a typical list or piece of prose.” (Ref 2) iMindmap is the name created by Tony Buzan also called the “A Ultimate Visual and graphic holistic thinking tool” (Ref 3) Mind Map is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of the brain. It harnesses the full range of cortical skills - word, image, number, logic, rhythm, colour and spatial awareness - in a single, uniquely powerful manner. In so doing, it gives you the freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain.

Laws of Mind Mapping According to the Wiki. A mind map is a diagram used to visually outline information. A mind map is often created around a single word or text, placed in the centre, to which associated ideas, words and concepts are added. Major categories radiate from a central node, and lesser categories are sub-branches of larger branches. The idea of visually representing thought for problem solving and organization goes back centuries. (Ref 4) Similar to a road map, a Mind Map will: • • • • • • • •

Give you an overview of a large subject/area. Enable you to plan routes/make choices and let you know where you are going and where you have been. Gather and hold large amounts of data. Encourage problem solving by seeing new creative pathways. Enable you to be extremely efficient. Be enjoyable to look at, read, muse over and remember. Attract and hold the eye/brain. Improve and accelerate your learning and thinking skills.

A mind map is: • Good software tool • Intuitive • Easy to use • Remember things • Making better notes • Coming up with ideas • Saving time • Concentrating • Making the most of your time

iMindMap is from the Inventor of Mind Mapping

iMindMap is Mind Mapping software from the man who invented Mind Mapping, Tony Buzan during the 1960s, his experience at school with the librarian saying that they have no mind mapping book placed him on the path to the idea of creating - Mind mapping. Everything we do is designed to get you thinking creatively and without limitations. Our 40 years of research – more than any other organisation in this field – has culminated in us perfecting the Mind Mapping technique. Mind Map software doesn’t just try to replicate what you’re already doing in a slightly prettier format. It encourages you to think creatively and approach Mind Mapping in a way that is in line with how your brain naturally processes information. (Ref 5)

Buzan's iMindMap is the official Mind Mapping software from Tony Buzan. The desktop application uses Tony Buzan's organic Mind Mapping methods to create maps for brainstorming, organising, creative thinking, project management and planning. Developed by ThinkBuzan Ltd, Buzan's iMindMap runs Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and there are three Editions available: Elements, Professional and Ultimate. The software allows organic and linear Mind Maps to be created using a mouse, keyboard, interactive whiteboard or tablet computer. Tony Buzan is the world's leading author, lecturer and adviser to governments, businesses, the professions, universities and schools on the brain, learning and thinking skills. In addition, he is founder of the Brain Trust Charity and the Use Your Head/Brain Clubs, President of the Mind Sports Council and the Buzan organisation. Tony is the creator of the concepts of Mind Mapping, Radiant Thinking and Mental Literacy. Born in 1942, Tony Buzan graduated from the University of British Colombia in 1964, achieving double Honours in psychology, English, Mathematics and the General Sciences. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he worked for the Daily Telegraph in Fleet Street, and edited the International Journal of MENSA.

Editing the properties of a branch has been made easier in iMindMap 7. The branch target now contains a gray segment that, when you click it, causes a dialog box like the one below to pop up over the currently-selected topic.

This enables you to: Toggle it between a regular and a box branch Toggle the branch text between right, left and center alignment Change its color via a pop-up color palette Change its shape (this didn’t work in the beta version I used) Change the appearance of the branch itself via branch art (for example, you can make it look like a pencil, a road, an arm and lightning) The pop-up window contains four other tabs, in addition to branch formatting: DropTask, image, edit and objects. DropTask enables you to integrate the tasks you’ve created in this web-based visual task management tool with your mind maps. The image tab gives you fast access to iMindMap’s drawing tools and image library, as well as a “file” button to import images from your computer. Edit gives you access to cut, copy and paste tools, while “objects” lets you quickly add notes, hypertext links and audio files to a map branch. Why is this valuable? Any time you can enable users to get work done within the mind map, without having to repeatedly move the cursor back to the program’s toolbar, is a plus. Continuing to work within the map is almost always faster, especially for repeated tasks.

To move a topic, you must click and drag on the blue segment of the branch target. When you do so, the blue segment turns into a blue circle and you can position it as needed. Not exactly intuitive at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it, this method of moving topics works well. The way the segment transforms into a circle is excellent user feedback that you’re doing it right! Reference 10

You can move it, resize it and draw inside the area. Sketching The last several versions of iMindMap have given you the ability to add sketches to your mind map canvas, but they did so in a separate window. In this new version of ThinkBuzan’s mind mapping software, you are able to create them directly in the workspace. It provides a nice set of tools for creating common shapes, such a circles, rectangles and polygons, plus brushes, a paint can and more. The controls are simple and intuitive to use, and you can easily resize or drag the sketching region around the workspace, even while you’re creating a sketch- nice! “iMindMap 7 insert target in the same way the branch target helps you add content to your mind map with having to use iMindMap 7’s toolbar, the new insert target does so for floating assets. When you double click in a blank area of the workspace, a set of four icons appears, which enable you to quickly add images, floating text, flowcharts and new maps. Clicking on one of these buttons displays another tier of buttons, arrayed in an arc next to it, like the screen shot at right. To select one of these elements to add to your mind map, you can simply click it or drag and drop it. When you first start using the program, a help window pops up that demonstrates via a simple animation how to use the insert target. This is very helpful, but I think this new user interface element could also benefit from tool tips, which would appear on screen as you hover over a button.” Reference 10 EXTRA FEATURES AREA

This is bound to be confusing for new users. I’ve been using iMindMap for years, and I’m not even sure what all of these commands do. It’s easy to get lost, especially when the “home” button doesn’t take you back to your map and the main toolbar, but to the iMindMap 7 start page. And then there’s the branch and insert targets. Don’t get me wrong – they’re wonderful tools that help users get more work done faster. But as they get more complex, with more segments and buttons, new users may quickly become confused. Without tool tips or other “hints,” they must learn by trial and error what each one does – or RTFM (read the f**king manual). Once you understand what each one does, it’s a very productive way to build and enhance a map. But it just creates a learning curve that’s a little higher for new users.” Reference 10

Chap 6: DROPTASK “Integration with DropTask …iMindMap 7 - DropTask integration As you create mind maps in iMindMap 7, you can easily transfer tasks to DropTask, a visual, web-based tool for project and task tracking (click here to read my review of it). To use this feature, you can either click on the gray segment of the branch target and the DropTask tab in the menu that pops up. The program also displays DropTask information for the current task in the tabbed panel at the side of the workspace. There, you can add a note to the task and send it to DropTask. When it arrives there, it appears in the application’s inbox (as shown in the screenshot at right). This gives you the option of assigning it to a specific project. This is an interesting integration, but with a relatively small population of DropTask users in the world, I question its usefulness to the majority of iMindMap 7 users. iMindMap and DropTask make the perfect pairing, with both focusing on giving you an intuitive and visual environment in which to manage information. So now you can make the most of iMindMap’s creative workspace to generate and organise your ideas, then fire them into DropTask and power them through to successful implementation with DropTask’s fluid approach to task management.”

How it works In iMindMap you can send any branch straight into the visual task management app, DropTask, to become a ‘task’. You can also export whole Mind Maps into DropTask, which will become ‘Projects’. Once you export your iMindMap branches into DropTask, individual and actionable task circles will form. You’ll then be able to use DropTask’s powerfully visual task indicators to give your project increased clarity and depth.

Get updates on your schedule and task progress Say goodbye to complex project management tools that become a project in themselves, with convoluted features and overly-complicated interfaces. DropTask is about a simple, visual and fluid way to handle your workload and complete successful projects.

Example of steps 1 to 5 Step 1 Brainstorm ideas in iMindMap's generative and creative workspace, to capture and grow them fast. Organise and group those ideas to create a clear overview.

Step 2 Select ideas that you would like to put into action and bring up the Branch Editor. Use the DropTask tab to send your branch and any attached notes as new tasks to DropTask.

Step 3 You can now move into DropTask's collaborative and fluid task management workspace to organise your new tasks. Simply drag your new tasks into the relevant project.

Step 4 Add priorities, attach files, update progress, and assign the tasks to your colleagues and more; all in a flexible, visual environment.

Step 5 Reap the benefits of a simple, smooth process, with plenty of visual feedback, that lets you generate the right solutions and successfully implement them. No convoluted features, no jargon.

The export to iMindmap is very straightforward and easy- your groups will be exported as iMindmap branches and your tasks as descendent child branches. One of the great things about this export is that you’ll find all of your corresponding branches in the same colour as you’d originally selected in DropTask, so your user experience is greatly enhanced by allowing you to make a visual connection. When a shape is selected, two little tabs stick out at the bottom of it that enable you to change its color and shape. While connecting one shape to another, iMindMap 7 provides you with ample visual feedback. When you hover over a shape, a green button appears in the middle of it with a dotted circle rotating around it. This lets you know the program is ready to add a connector line. You simply drag it to the shape to which you want to connect. As soon as your mouse hovers over the edge of the second shape, a similar rotating ring appears to let you know you’re in the right spot to drop the line (see screen shot below, which depicts me joining shapes C and the green parallelogram E).”

“Presentation templates Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

86

Developer ThinkBuzan debuted a presentation builder in iMindMap 6. In version 7, it has added templates to help users create presentations even faster. Adding logos and backgrounds is now easier, too. When you click on the “present” button in the program’s toolbar, a window pops up that asks you what kind of presentation you plan to create – a meeting, teaching, big overview or indepth talk (like the screen shot above). Helpful instructions explain what you’ll get if you select each option. You can also build your own presentation. Keep in mind that in the parlance of iMindMap 7, a presentation “template” doesn’t mean a set of colors and styles – it has to do with how the program displays each topic, the type of transitions used between slides and the speed at which it does so.

iMindMap 7 - presentation templates selected “meeting,” and iMindMap 7 automatically created a set of slides where one branch appeared at a time in a slide-by-slide view, with quick transitions between them. I then used the new logo and background controls to add these elements to my slides (see screenshot at right). Logos appear in the lower right corner of each slide; you can’t move them around, and it’s up to you to select an image with a transparent background so you don’t get a white box around it when you add a background (which happened in the screen shot – see the logo in slide 2?). I then switched to “in-depth talk” and re-ran my presentation. The program now displayed all of my map’s branches in every slide, but simply zoomed and repositioned the map to center on each topic in succession. But because each slide displayed all of the topics and the branches were right next to each other, the effect was like watching my mind map bounce around on screen. To my way of thinking, this would probably be somewhat disconcerting to people viewing a presentation given in this style.

Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

87

Despite this minor nitpick, I like the way the presentation builder is designed. It’s easy to use and behaves intuitively. Reference 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FnGKNPwTh4&feature=em-uploademail

Chapter 23 EDUCATION IDEAS In education today, teachers face the challenge of keeping tech savvy, information overloaded students engaged. So, how exactly can you ensure your students remain attentive throughout the lesson, and retain the information after they leave the classroom? Mind Maps will drastically improve the way you deliver lessons and present concepts, making them highly engaging and truly unforgettable. Mind Maps present concepts in a clear and concise manner. They’re capable of consolidating large amounts of data on to one page, and bringing the key facts into focus. This gives your students a clear overview of the topic and helps break down complicated information into easily digestible chunks.

Incorporated in to a Mind Map are all of the elements that support memory; vibrant colours, interesting shapes, imagery and a radiating structure that helps us to identify associations between them. Students are much more likely to retain and recall information from a Mind Map than if they were reading from linear, monotonous lists.

Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

103

Deliver your lesson using Mind Mapping software, such as iMindMap, and you can benefit from its powerful presentation features. Read on to drill down into the specific ways the software can help you deliver lessons with real impact.

Build your Mind Map in 3 easy steps 1) Create your central idea Your central idea will represent the theme that you’re going to explore in the lesson, where all other topic information will stem from. Try to include a supporting image that reflects the topic, as our brains respond better to visual stimuli. 2) Add branches to your map Next, add your branches. The main branches that flow from the central idea will be your topic’s key themes, and each theme can be further explored by adding child branches.

Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

104

Make your branches vibrant and compelling using iMindMap’s Branch Art feature. They will not only capture your students’ attention, but your students will associate colours and designs with certain topics, which will help them when trying to remember information. 3) Add keywords to your branches When adding text to your branches, try to use one keyword per branch as keywords trigger connections in your brain, so that you can recall a greater quantity of information and generate more ideas. Overloading your students with information will have the opposite effect. Additionally, inserting supporting images and icons from the iMindMap Properties Panel will further reinforce the relation of key facts.

Why use iMindMap for delivering lessons? iMindMap’s intuitive Presentation Builder has everything you need to build captivating presentations for delivering lessons. For starters, there’s a ready-made template for teaching, so most of the hard work is already done for you. Add backgrounds to your Mind Map to effortlessly jazz up your presentation, and inject some excitement by adding links --Inserting Links - iMindMap 7 to your branches that open various multimedia, such as music and videos to keep your lessons varied and your students engrossed. If you really want to wow your students, you can transform iMindMap Presentation into 3D. Zoom in on branches as you explain each topic, and effortlessly go back and review other topics if necessary.

Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

105

Hint: iMindMap not only gives you the platform for delivering lessons with real impact, it also comes in handy after the lesson has taken place. Export your presentation as a Word Document or image to create hand-outs for your students, or even export it as a video and upload it straight to YouTube. iMindMap will turn any presentation into an informative, visually stimulating display, guaranteed to keep students engaged and motivated throughout lessons. 1) Create templates iMindmap is pre-loaded with a range of customisable templates. However, teachers can also create their own templates in iMindMap and issue the templates to students for them to complete as homework or during lessons. This exercise always works well as the template provides students with direction and acts as a foundation for them to build upon. 2) Connect the iPad to the projector The projector is a fundamental tool in the classroom. If you’re using the iMindMap HD app for the iPad, you can connect the class iPad to the projector at the front of the classroom. This a great way to display information for everyone to see. Teachers can walk around the classroom holding the iPad, ask students to express their ideas and then add the ideas to the Mind Map in iMindMap HD. With the ideas clearly visible on the whiteboard, students will be more eager to contribute in class discussions so that their ideas feature in the Mind Map. 3) Paired work for students Paired work is an essential activity for students of any age. Teachers can ask students to brainstorm ideas for a specific topic in iMindMap HD using a shared iPad. Once all the ideas have been collected and consolidated, the teacher can then assign a branch from the map to each pair and ask them to research it in greater depth. Remember to add the names of students who are researching each branch on the Mind Map, ready for the next lesson. 4) Peer review exercises With an in-app subscription to iMindMap Freedom, students are able to share their work through the iMindMap Cloud. The students can easily engage in peer review exercises, build upon ideas and add their own comments to the map. Reviewing each other’s work allows students to think more objectively and gain new ideas to improve their own individual Mind Maps.

5) ‘Illustrate and explain’ exercises We all know the phrase “a picture says a thousand words”. During brainstorming sessions, ask students to use images from the computer or from iMindMap’s built-in image library to represent their ideas in their Mind Map. Student should explain their ideas and say how the images chosen illustrate them. This exercise works well for students with poor writing skills who may lack confidence in their written ability. Also, several studies have shown that images enhance long-term memory and recall of information. 6) Assessing student performance iMindMap can also be used to analyse the progress of each student throughout the year. Teachers can highlight the student’s strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. For younger students, it is beneficial to print a copy of the Mind Map to provide at parent’s evening. The Mind Map is a great point of reference to assess how well a student is performing and developing over time. 7) Developing research techniques To aid independent learning, teachers provide students with basic background information. The students then research the topic in greater depth online, recording their findings in iMindMap. Students can attach multimedia resources to their maps with web links, text notes, audio notes and video links, enabling efficient referencing. In addition, this exercise helps students memorise information, as all the key findings are visible in an easy-to-read Mind Map – a valuable revision tool.

Why iMindMap? “There is often the misconception that iMindMap is just an electronic version of the hand drawn technique. Although iMindMap does not replace hand drawn maps, it adds a new dimension to brainstorming. The multi-media capabilities add so much value to the learning experience – which is ideal for technology savvy educators. iMindMap has the capability to do everything the hand drawn technique does, and so much more.” Steve’s Final Thoughts on iMindMap in education… “Previously, the teacher controlled what the student learnt and the learning tools which children had access to. However, with the development of ‘smart’ mobile devices such as iPads, students are now taking control of their own learning. Introducing them to tools such as iMindMap at a young age gives them the opportunity to develop key life skills such as independent research, critical thinking, creativity and analytical skills.” Reference 13: http://blog.thinkbuzan.com/imindmap/7-modern-ways-teachers-use-mindmapping “iMindMap is a limitless workspace for brainstorming ideas, taking notes, organising tasks and creating presentations – the applicability of iMindMap in schools is endless. It gives the students more independence in their learning and shows them how beneficial it is to organise their thoughts before starting any piece of work.” By Steve Molyneux

Importance of iPads in Education Firstly, we must recognise just how far technology for education has come. Gone are the days when a single bulky computer was a classroom luxury. Now, Government initiatives are aiming to give every student in the country access to portable media devices like iPads to boost their development. IT literacy is now a necessity. Apple is at the top of the educational IT literacy movement. In June 2013, Apple sealed a $30 million deal with the Los Angeles School District to supply its students with iPads in the classroom. The iPads will come pre-loaded with several educational apps to boost the Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

123

learning experience. This is a significant step towards the goal of making iPads accessible to every pupil in the USA. Apple’s Senior Vice President, Phil Schiller, had the following to say: “Education is in Apple’s DNA… Schools around the world have embraced the engaging and interactive quality of iPad with nearly 10 million iPads already in schools today.” Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has commented on how quickly the iPad is being adopted in education. Apple Distinguished Mentor, Steve Molyneux, set up his company, the iPad Academy, to develop the iPad/ education relationship to the full, and has subsequently become the leading UK provider for iPad training in education. “Previously, the teacher controlled what the student learnt and the learning tools which children had access to. However, with the development of media devices such as iPads, students are now taking control of their own learning.”

Mind Mapping on the iPad Since becoming a ThinkBuzan Licensed Instructor, Steve has integrated his passion for Apple products with his accredited expertise in iMindMap. “I have found that introducing them to tools such as iMindMap at a young age gives them the opportunity to develop key life skills such as independent research, critical thinking, and analytical skills.” He has taught countless schools across the UK how to Mind Map on the iPad using iMindMap HD app. Here, he provides ThinkBuzan with an exclusive insight into three of the schools to which he has delivered training sessions.

Case Study 1: Keble Prep School for boys, North London, UK Steve facilitated a session at Keble Prep School in which teachers used Mind Mapping for classroom tasks. During an English lesson, the teacher asked students to submit an iMindMap on a World War I poem, exploring the various themes, characters and attitudes by mind mapping, rather than producing an essay. This task was set so that students consolidated the large passage of text into key components. The teacher also integrated iMindMap into the homework tasks set, asking students to create an essay plan using iMindMap, to see if this impacted the essays submitted by the students. Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

124

What were the results? Students’ essays were more structured and higher quality if they Mind Mapped and brainstormed the key elements. As students became more prolific users of the app and its various features, teachers also witnessed a significant improvement in the way students approached tasks, and in their critical thinking, organisational and creativity skills. “It was a fantastic day. The staff are really excited and already the change has been amazing. You could hear a pin drop, the boys were so fired up in all lessons. Many of them have been showing me various animations and ideas they have had to present their work” - Karen Collier, Keble Prep School

Case Study 2: Loughborough Endowed Schools, Loughborough, UK In June 2013, Steve facilitated two weeks of intensive training at Loughborough Endowed Schools Group, which is one of the largest independent schools in the UK, with pupils aged 4 to 18. As part of the training course, Steve guided teachers through the full capability of iMindMap HD app and showed them how to incorporate Mind Mapping into the school curriculum. Steve’s training focused particularly on showing teachers how to attach multimedia links to their Mind Maps. “Teachers are often unaware of just how beneficial the app can be in the classroom. They were really impressed with the attachment capabilities of the app. Children today need to learn from a wide variety of multimedia sources, so being able to insert web links, audio notes, text notes and video links to their maps adds so much value to the learning experience.” Case Study 3: James Brindley School, Birmingham, UK The iPad Academy has been working closely with James Brindley School, the education provider at Birmingham Children’s Hospital with over 6000 students being educated in any one year. The school provides education to children while they are unable to attend school for physical and mental health reasons. In these circumstances, iPads are the most effective learning tool as they allow total mobility and freedom for the students. Steve provides continual iMindMap training to new and existing students at the school to improve their Ian B Hall CRT in Bendigo Vic Australia

125

learning. As an accredited trainer, Steve ensures that the mobile technology has a positive impact on their experience.

How does the school use iMindMap HD? “iMindmap HD is a very intuitive tool. Students will pick up the basics in a matter of minutes, and then enjoy exploring the other features. It is a great tool for Mind Mapping in the truest sense. We are using it as an alternative to note taking, but it is even more useful in the way it brings ‘democracy’ to the classroom. The Mind Map can be created, and presented, by an entire class allowing all pupils to share their ideas and learning.” - Iain Johnson, Deputy Head Teacher, James Brindley School Final thoughts from Steve on iMindMap… Reference 15 http://blog.thinkbuzan.com/imindmap/why-ipad-and-imindmap-are-essential-ineducation Chapter 27: Quotes on iMindmapping “I often create maps for summarising huge quantities of information. The branch collapse feature is a lifesaver as can temporarily collapse the branches I’m not working on – it allows me to focus on the task at hand and makes my map so much clearer!” By Melanie Blount, Educational Resources Manager, WJEC

FEEDBACK FROM USERS OF iMINDMAP V 7 Here is comments from Erick H. He is in the LinkedIn - Mind Map User Group (MMUG) created by Ruud Rensink, Chairman at Mensa, The High IQ Society.

Erick H I have been using this tool for several years now since version 4. I think. I am glad they keep improving each year to bring more flexibility and innovation into the Mind Mapping community. I am a visual thinker passionate and Mind Mapping lover. I use it for work, personal grow and almost anything where a mind map can be applied to. One thing though is that I have been searching for the ultimate, do it all, 4x4, DMM tool. I can say I am still searching. I personally own licenses for Mindjet, Novamind, IMM and Dropmind (and the brain but this one falls in another category) and none of these has fulfilled my needs 100%. iMindmap Ultimate - I think is the best tool for creativity and flexibility. Coming from Buzan's trademark company, makes honor to the foundations of mind mapping principles, offering a lot of flexibility, organic look and feel and design options. Presentations are great too however I still not feeling comfortable to use for any business or formal work presentations. I probably need to explore more on this new version but I highly recommend if you want to express to the highest in the mind mapping method. Maybe, space optimization has some room for improvement in future versions and alternative business like templates and viewer tool for sharing maps. I mainly use this tool when I need to achieve an artistic work and when I am in my creative mood.

“In the last few years the quality of Mind Mapping software has increased dramatically and is now moving even faster. We recommend iMindMap Ultimate as the best Mind Mapping software, and it is the official Buzan software. MindGenius V3 is also terrific, and does more than just Mind Mapping, but isn't as 'Map like' as iMindMap” “Mind Maps are one of the most powerful tools in your Deliberate Creativity and Innovation toolkit. Building on the significant research and development done by Tony Buzan over 40 years, this eModule is delivered by Jennifer Goddard, Tony's Senior Master Trainer and cofounder of Mindwerx International.” “Mind Maps work with your brain and in this program you will begin to develop brain friendly learning skills that unleash personal genius and creativity.” Posted by: Bill Jarrard on December 12th, 2010 DCI-05 Mind Mapping course (Reference 7)

SURVEYS ON MINDMAPPING Web site: http://lifehacker.com/5188833/hive-five-five-best-mind-mapping-applications iMindMap (Windows/Mac/Linux, $99-295) iMindMap can claim two distinctions among the top five tools. First, it's the biggest download —weighing in at 135MB. Second it's the only application on the list developed by Tony Buzan —who lays claim to being the inventor of the mind map. iMindMap takes a different approach to mapping than the other applications in the list. Rather than create new nodes off the main idea by adding boxes, nodes are created by clicking in the centre or the main idea and drawing away from it with the mouse. Each new idea is a branch off the centre. Strangely, many of basic feature available in free mind-mapping software are only found in the more expensive versions of iMindMap, like the ability to expand and collapse branches. Mind maps created in iMindMap can be exported as PDF, JPG, PNG and text outline; a 7 day trial is available.

Since he was a child Tony Buzan has been enchanted by what he describes as the power and beauty of the mind. He has dedicated his adult life firstly to encouraging all around him to be aware of the latent brainpower that we all possess and secondly to teach a whole range of memory and study techniques that aim to dramatically improve our performance.
