Foreword

Foreword This has been a challenging year for staff and students with the off-on relocation to the new building in the middle of the academic year. Thankfully this year’s graduating students have been very accommodating and have taken any disruption in their stride. This year’s catalogue reflects the dominating themes of the year and is based around the ideas of moving, the creative process and anger. The catalogue showcases a broad range of activity - Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation and Interactive Design. As ever, the publication has been conceived, designed and funded by the students. Thanks to Craig, Harry, Ifan, Jon, Adam and the rest of the degree show team for working so hard fundraising and developing concepts for the publication. A special thanks must also go to Adam for taking on the responsibility of art direction, design and production. Ian Mitchell Programme Leader, Graphic Arts

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE OVER 1 MILLION NEW VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING EACH YEAR!

- Zach de la Rocha

In a world governed by the economics of consumerism, profit and progress, the poor, though everywhere, remain the silent majority. Suffering from hunger. Suffering from hunger, disease, exploitation and upheaval, they are held by the actions and decisions of the wealthy, powereful and selfish few.

We will start small, but spread like wildfire, We will be a new generation of social agitators demanding change.

We can no longer stand by and watch this hypocrisy. It is our responsibility to tell the real story of our times. To give a voice to the silent majority. To Ctrl.Alt.Shift the proliferation of poverty.

We will find our own voice... and raise it

The world can’t wait. we are impatient for change.

We’ll say what needs to be said to force change.

We, the creative, the free thinking future of this planet will start a revolution. We’ll use photography, films, stories, illustrations, songs, tin cans and strings to get our message across.

THESE PEOPLE DON’T HAVE A VOICE! WILL YOU BE THEIR VOICE?

We are passionate, provocative, outspoken and uncompromising.

Interview Magazine is a publication mainly based on celebrities that interview other celebrities which are similar in there categories. I didn’t only change the layouts of this publication but I added a more personal approach to it. I added comments to the pages based on the articles, these comments are my personal views so they might be offensive to some of the celebrities but this would make the publication more popular as people like honesty even if it may be critical.

This book is a personal project, an attempt to compare my experiences of England and Poland. It means to show similarities and the differences between two countries. For me, making that comparison was a great opportunity to explore my interest in editorial design and organizing information and statistics. My hope is that people who come across my book will find the information helpful if they decided to visit Poland, however this book is not a tourist guide. The choice of information I decided to include is subjective and obviously limited.

For this project I decided to create four typefaces that can be made into three dimensional typefaces. Each of the fonts and based around basic shapes, squares, circles, triangles and the fourth is an amalgamation of the three basic shapes. Packaged together are four booklets which showcase the characters but also have the net design for each of the letter forms. Accompanying the booklet are four posters showing off the fonts and a CD which contains the net designs so you can easily print them off and create as many letter forms as you like. www.Jashands.com j_bhachu_20@hotmail.com

Ctrl Alt Shift is a community for passionate and outspoken individuals which aims to engage 16-25 year olds across the UK, who are seeking change. In many societies across the world, women have no voice. This booklet aims to gives these women and children a voice by tackling the issues, which effect them daily and broadcast them to a wider audience. www.leannekerwin.co.uk leanneker@hotmail.com

Using FCUK’s existing branding for the basis of the catalogue but taking the brands image a step further. In the past FCUK have used typographic slogans as part of there branding campaigns for instance ‘FCUK ME’ and ‘FCUK YOU’. I decided to implementing a ‘censored feel’ throughout the catalogue’s design and applying this to the typography, the Logo, and the models.

Grey Matter is a book all about the beauty and aesthetics of concrete structures and the spectrum of colours that are conveyed within concrete, this feeling has been attained through a wealth of different shades of grey and different textured and weights of paper. As well as playing with the shapes and formation of certain concrete forms inside geometric shapes, which gives the book more of a cohesive feel.

Cinema Redux is the concept of condensing an entire film into one single image. I created my images from my favorite film - Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’. Stills from the movie were taken at five second intervals, converted into their four average colours, and arranged in patterns that are key themes in the movie. Such as the maze, and the patterns from the carpets. Both of which are considered as symbols for ‘Jack Torrence’s’ eventual loss of sanity.

The project contains three 10’’ samplers each with a different record cover and a set of mail order packaging design’s. The record cover’s are based on a cataloguing system for the sampler’s. The various dead or dying music format’s printed on the mail packaging are intended to create a sense of nostalgia for the record and its format that made you fall in love with music.

Junior Bear and i have worked together to create a branding system to showcase his music and the inner child in all of us. The brief was to build a brand that represented Junior Bears music, with an emphasis on packaging that will take you back to your childhood. towndogg@gmail.com

Foster Cinema Redux I have created a visual diagram of the entire soundtrack for the movie almost famous, each colour representing a different song. The white space indicates where no music is played. The key to the poster can be found on the back of the album sleeve. The horizontal width is equal to 60 seconds and the vertical is equal to 120 minutes which is the duration of the film. By producing a record sleeve as a packaging for the poster I was able to tie it in with the theme of music. grace_vowles@yahoo.co.uk

Fiona Dunphy Love by Numbers P.78

The brief was to create an illustration to go with the relationship column “Love By Numbers”. Shown is an article about the dilemmas of retirement and how couples manage to survive. “ My wife’s retiring in a few months and I’m worried she’ll feel lost”. The second image illustrates the situation of a man wanting to make his girlfriend watch pornography with him, but is directed in the article to pose as the character from a porn film to spice up their sex life, rather than coercing his girlfriend into watching pornography.

Michael Cottage Tank Crimes Sampler P.86

The brief was to design a CD sampler for an independent record label. Tank Crimes release thrash metal and punk records from bands such as Nightstick Justice and STFU. I wanted my design to represent what the label stand for and therefore appeal to fans of this music. Upon opening the CD case and removing the disc, the listener is pulling apart the head of the deformed man on the cover of the case. lsamcott@ljmu.ac.uk

This project was a response to movie quotes, in which the person had to guess what the movie was from the image and the quote on the poster. bluefishzoo2@hotmail.com

Kitchener Cinematic Redux My brief was to create a printed image which represents the film “The Happiness of the Katakuri’s” from start to finish. anthony.kitchener@hotmail.co.uk

The purpose of this project was to design an identity for ‘The School of Life’ a social enterprise based in London that offers classes and opportunities to experience ‘new ideas for living’. My intention was to create an illustrative identity that could be applied in a variety of ways (packaging and sizes). My Idea forms around ‘The Tree of Life’; a subconscious subject of nature that reflects ‘play, love, family, politics and work’. The branches form into various aspects: animals, symbols and objects.

Siobhan Evans Aphorism’s P.96

Alison Miller HP Computer Promotion P.99

The brief for this project was to promote Hewlett Packard Workstations to creative people. They wanted to show that their machines could be used to make any conceivable idea. I decided to set my animation inside the computer and create a mad scientists laboratory. Here, all sorts of strange goings on occur as the insides of the computer start to come alive. They move around ending up on the laboratory table where, in a mad Frankenstein type moment, they become whatever the human mind has conceived. the_hills_arealive@hotmail.com
