January 2017

Dear Colleagues, As you will see on the following pages, IAGTO is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year. I am very proud of what we have been able to achieve over the past two decades for our members and for the golf tourism industry overall. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members, including those who have only recently joined us in addition to those who have made this journey with us all the way from 1997! IAGTO now has over 2500 member companies in 97 countries including more than 650 golf tour operators in 62 countries, looked after by 26 staff and regional representatives around the world. In the Review section you will see that 2016 marked the 5th consecutive year of growth for golf tour operator sales and golf visitor arrivals, although the rate of growth overall is slowing down now which is to be expected. We continue to develop new services and activities every year, designed to create opportunities and generate publicity for our members and to maintain and raise standards across the industry while gathering and presenting data on golf tourism trends and developments in all markets and destinations. I look forward to seeing many of you again, or for the first time, this year at our 6th AGTC in Danang from 7-10 May, our 9th NAC in Miami from 25-28 June, at IGTM in Cannes from 11-14 December or at one of our other golf tourism events. Lastly I would like to thank my staff and representatives around the world and all those who have worked for IAGTO over the years who have done such a wonderful job. Best wishes to you all,

IAGTO Review 20 Years and still Going Strong! 2016 marked IAGTO’s twentieth year of operation, celebrating two decades at the heart of the global golf tourism industry. By the end of the year our membership had surpassed 2500 companies including more than 650 golf tour operators for the first time in our history. With 12 staff in our London-based head office and 14 representatives across the globe, we have made it our goal to create and deliver services, tailored to specific markets and destinations, that directly support our members and help to grow golf tourism worldwide. IAGTO Staff

IAGTO Survey sheds light on Five Years of Consecutive Growth Launched in January 2015, our Quarterly 60-second Survey is now completed by over one-thousand member golf tour operators, golf resort, golf courses and hotels each year, providing a birds’ eye view into the state of the market every three months. New Graphic Displays show Regional Trends and Country Comparisons In 2016 our software was developed to enable members to see the cumulative results of the quarterly surveys in a series of graphic displays entirely tailored for each member, taking into account their location and type of company. Completing the survey allows a member to see a much more detailed analysis comparing their own results to the average not only globally and within their continent, but in comparison to the average within their country and even region. 7

Photo & Video Library Not only has the IAGTO Photo Library now topped 18,000 images from 1000 member companies, we launched our long-awaited Video Library in December 2016. Using a similar display format to our Photo Library, the carefully constructed search engine allows members to find videos aligned to a wide range of specific categories and themes, in addition to the standard name and country filters. Over 200 videos have already been uploaded and IAGTO will be highlighting this new service by adding a ‘Golf Travel Video of the Year’ Award at 2017’s end of year ceremony in Cannes. A very fitting venue at which to stage our first ‘IAGTO Film Award’!

Fam Tour Management Over the past two decades IAGTO has helped to arrange and promote hundreds of golf tour operator and golf travel writer fam tours. Using all of this expertise, at the end of 2016 IAGTO launched a Fam Tour Management section within the members’ section of its website which revolutionises the organization and tracking of fam trips. Tourist boards and other fam tour organizers can now simply build a Fam Tour programme within the website. IAGTO will review every draft itinerary, make recommendations where appropriate and recognise those that meet industry standards as IAGTO endorsed fams. Once the itinerary is approved, organizers select which markets or which individual tour operators can be invited to apply and register for their fam. The process of inviting operators to apply for fams is automatic and the organizer will be notified of all applications. The Fam Tour Management system includes a post-fam online questionnaire that can be tailored for each Fam and is mandatory for each participant operator or journalist to complete. Tour operators themselves can use the Fam Tour Management system to keep track of the fams that they themselves or colleagues have participated in. Just as we have become used to managing our own flight reservations, operators will be able to manage their own fam bookings, uploading flight details when required along with other relevant information. Organizers will be able to use the site to also track whether operators are featuring, promoting and selling the destination as a result of participating in the fam. 9

IAGTO Destination Conventions IAGTO Costa Brava Trophy Girona was the host destination for the IAGTO Costa Brava Trophy in May 2016, which drew 80 golf tour operators from 23 countries and was staged in a partnership between IAGTO, the Catalan Tourist Board, the Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board and the Golf Association Costa Brava. The event was the 2nd annual edition of the IAGTO Spain Trophy which focuses the attention of the golf tourism industry on a different golf destination within Spain each year. Inspection visits to region’s golf courses and meetings with golf tourism suppliers took place throughout the week, with the ‘Trophy’ taking place on the Stadium Course of the 2015 IAGTO Award-winning PGA Catalunya Resort. Figures released during the Convention showed that European golf visitor numbers to the Costa Brava rocketed by 67% between 2013 and 2015. That trend is expected to continue as a direct result of staging the IAGTO Trophy as the centrepiece of Costa Brava’s Year of Golf, Wine and Gastronomy. Costa Brava has the equivalent of sixteen different 18-hole courses all within a 45 minute drive of the historical, cultural, walking city of Girona. The entire region offers a fantastic cluster of high quality and visitor-friendly golf experiences, with IAGTO operators voting Costa Brava ‘Golf Destination of the Year’ as far back as 2000 at the inaugural IAGTO Awards. The positioning of Costa Brava as a destination of golf and gastronomy is no idle talk, with restaurants in Girona alone amassing a quite incredible 17 Michelin Stars.

4th Golf Ireland Convention The 4th Golf Ireland Convention took place from 8-10 June at Rosapenna Golf Resort and was coordinated by Failte Ireland in cooperation with IAGTO and with the support of Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland. North & West Coast Links set up the convention program, the fam trips and the transportation. The primary objective was to showcase the northern regions of the Wild Atlantic Way in relation to golf travel in line with Failte Ireland’s 2016 marketing strategy, while creating business opportunities for golf tourism industry suppliers from across Ireland. A total of 28 golf tour operator delegates from 10 key markets and 62 Irish golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, DMCs and transportation companies undertook over 600 meetings at Rosapenna Golf Resort who also hosted the golf tournament and evening events. The golf tour operators were also invited to stay at Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa and play at Ballyliffin Golf Club prior to the convention and to stay at Mount Falcon Estate and play golf at Donegal Golf Club, County Sligo Golf Club, Enniscrone Golf Club and Carne Golf Club on a Post-Convention fam. IAGTO Mexico Golf Tourism Convention IAGTO held its inaugural Mexico Golf Tourism Convention at Moon Palace Golf Resort and Spa in Cancun Riviera Maya during the first week of December 2016. Staged in association with the Mexican Caribbean Golf Course Association (MCGCA) and with the support of the Mexico Tourist Board, the event showcased all of the courses within this remarkable golf destination and drew golf tourism suppliers from across the country to meet with 40 golf tour operators from 18 countries. All delegates participated in a six-day inspection tour of the region incorporating the buyer-supplier meetings into the program. The event was transformative as the tools were unveiled to enable IAGTO golf tour operators to package the destination competitively and with ease to create the experience that will best meet the aspirations of their clients. We are delighted to announce that the 2nd Mexico Golf Tourism Convention will take place in Los Cabos from 29 October to 2 November 2017.

5th Asia Golf Tourism Convention Golf tourism to Chiang Mai is set to soar by as much as 25% over the coming two seasons after Thailand’s northern city hosted the 5th and largest Asia Golf Tourism Convention in April 2016. A record 643 delegates from 37 countries, including over 200 tour operators participated in the event at the Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre. The delegates experienced golf on some of the region’s 14 golf courses with the AGTC Golf Tournament hosted by Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort and Mae Jo Golf Resort & Spa. During the Fam Tours 126 golf tour operators travelled further afield visiting not only Chiang Mai but also Mae Hong Son, Lampang and Lamphun. The quality of the courses, their rolling landscapes combined with the great value of the hotels and well established tourism infrastructure form the pillars of Chiang Mai’s rapid growth as a golf destination that has now become even more popular with IAGTO golf tour operators. Thank you to our hosts and our international sponsors:

8th North America Golf Tourism Convention A golf tourism boom beckons for North Carolina after a record turnout at the NAC in Pinehurst, America’s “home of golf” in June 2016. Delegate numbers surpassed 400 for the first time, including a record 158 golf tour operators from 29 countries, all selling golf vacations to the Americas. We were privileged to be able to stage that annual NAC Golf Tournament on two of Pinehurst’s nine golf courses: the legendary Donald Ross-designed No 2, restored by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore for its third US Open in 2014 and which will hold it again in 2024; and the Tom Fazio-designed No 8. NAC attendees were also treated to an indoor and outdoor Taste of North Carolina evening at the resort’s Pinehurst Country Club with food, wine, craft beers and spirits served up by artisans from across the state. Before and after the convention, many of the tour operators got the chance to experience golf in different regions of North Carolina, going on familiarisation tours to Greensboro, the Outer Banks, Fayetteville and around the Village of Pinehurst. Hosting NAC was part of a three-year plan for Pinehurst to grow business with international golf tour operators and their initial targets were met and exceeded during the event itself. With double digit growth from Europe, the resort is now looking at Asian markets to capitalise on exposure from the US Open as well as continuing to grow its established markets. This is the first time we have held an event in North Carolina and we were been blown away, not only by the enthusiasm of the state tourist board, but also by the eagerness of many regional CVBs to get involved, to host familiarisation trips and to take this opportunity to position North Carolina as a truly international golf destination. Thank you to our hosts and our international sponsors:

2017 - 6th Asia Golf Tourism Convention Branded, for good reason, as AGTC on the Beach, the 2017 Convention heads to the award-winning golf and beach destination of Danang, in central Vietnam, from 7-10 May. Just as with our North American event, we already have a record number of buyer registrations for the 2017 Convention. Approximately 70% of the attending golf tour operators or ‘buyers’ will be from Asia Pacific markets. To have 200 of our member golf tour operators signed up in December is a clear indication of both the value of the event to tour operators and the appeal of Danang as a golf destination. Despite currently having only four golf courses, all are world class, offer great value and welcome visiting golfers. This demonstrates the importance of clusters of ‘export ready’ golf courses to the success of aspiring golf destinations. AGTC 2017 is supported by Danang Tourism, Furama Resort, Sungroup, Premier Village, Novotel Danang, Vietnam Airlines, Ba Na Hills Golf Club, Montgomerie Links Golf Club and Laguna Golf Lang Co along with a raft of hotels and Vietnamese inbound golf operators. 2017 - 9th North America Golf Tourism Convention It is Back to the Blue Monster for the 9th NAC from 25-28 June 2017 as the Convention returns to the resort which hosted the inaugural event back in 2009, Trump National Doral. With six months to go already 140 golf tour operators from a record 37 countries have registered for the event. Trump National Doral is hosting the Convention with the support of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and Visit Florida. With new flight connectivity, Miami is now much more accessible to the Asian market which so far accounts for 19% of registered buyers. More than half of the attending operators are travelling from Europe, Canada and the USA, with a further 17 operators from Australia and New Zealand, and a similar number from Latin America and the Caribbean. The island of Mallorca has hosted seven European Tour events, all held at the José María Olazábal-designed Pula Golf Resort. Al Zorah Golf Club

Al Zorah Golf Club A natural haven for world-class golf in the UAE The United Arab Emirates hadn’t welcomed a new championship golf course for nearly six years, but in December 2015 a truly unique layout spectacularly changed that trend and has been given the seal of approval from visiting golfers across the world. Meet the stunning Al Zorah Golf Club, part of Al Zorah, a partnership between Solidere International and the Government of Ajman. Al Zorah is Ajman’s most diverse, mixed-use, lifestyle destination with an emphasis on natural and healthy living. The golf club is managed by Troon Golf and located just 25 minutes from Dubai International Airport. The incredible golf course is not only a world-class facility for golfers, but lends itself to natural and contemporary living, one of Al Zorah’s most unique propositions, for residents, as well as visitors staying at one of its many luxury hotels. To add to this there will be marinas, restaurants, and a wellness centre that visitors will be able to make the most of, making Al Zorah a truly holistic development. A world-class course set amidst a beautiful, naturally-preserved environment of striking mangroves and sheer tranquillity – that’s the special proposition that has been magically created by the famed Nicklaus Design group and which awaits golfers making the short trip from Dubai and other UAE regions to play Ajman’s first ever golf course.

34

Al Zorah Golf Club

The spectacular, par-72 Al Zorah Golf Club offers a truly sensational design with pristinely-manicured fairways and greens; however, it is the way that Al Zorah and the Nicklaus Design team have protected the natural environment while creating the layout that really catches the eye. Those living around the golf course in Al Zorah’s Golf Villas will certainly have spectacular views! The natural landscape of the entire project is unique for its walkable environments, beaches, mangroves, creek and, of course, its golf course. More than 58 species of birds have made Al Zorah their home and this is certain to make the golfing experience truly unique and incredibly peaceful. In total, one million square metres of mangroves characterise the Al Zorah Golf Club and underline that notion of embracing rather than intruding on the natural layout of the land. A plethora of native sandy areas, an abundance of wildlife and 12km of waterfront add to that sense of rich beauty and biodiversity that makes Al Zorah a truly unique destination for those looking for both serenity and luxury. Vast coastal areas with a constantly changing tidal system also present a unique challenge for players, altering the look and feel of the back nine, in particular, on an hourly basis. “Thanks to the incredible work of the Nicklaus Design group, visitors can experience a golfing paradise set in a stunning natural environment,” says Philip Henderson, General Manager of Al Zorah Golf Club. “The facility has been positioned in line with our nearest competitors and below the current rates set in Dubai – so affordable luxury is another main attraction to members and visitors coming from within the UAE and overseas.” And when you consider all of this is located within a stone’s throw of The Oberoi Beach Resort Al Zorah, it’s no surprise that the Middle East’s newest course has already attracted interest from golfers coming in from around the world.

35

Al Zorah Golf Club

“When you get out on the course, it’s hard to believe you’re so close to superb hotels in Ajman and in the hub of Dubai,” adds Henderson. “Dubai International Airport is just 25 minutes from Al Zorah Golf Club, but there’s also Ras Al Khaimah International Airport which is less than an hour’s drive going the other way along the coast.” “Attracting international visitors is of paramount importance for Al Zorah Golf Club and, thanks to our partnership with Troon Golf, we can promise our guests not only a world-class golf course, but also impeccable service and hospitality for the duration of their visit,” adds Henderson. Central to the Al Zorah Golf Club project has been Nicklaus Design’s Senior Design Associate, Dirk Bouts, who has also mastered a number of impressive golfing venues across Europe, Africa and Asia. “The main strategy with the Al Zorah Golf Club project was to work with existing mangroves and the sensational views to facilitate world-class golf – so we kept that respect for the natural landscape, which really does distinguish the course,” says Bouts. “The setup worked very well in that it was easy to locate the golf course along the existing natural reserve without causing any disturbance. The tidal element is another characteristic that distinguishes Al Zorah Golf Club from other courses in the area – it will significantly change the aesthetics during the round and, of course, the playability will change too. “With Al Zorah Golf Club being the first golf course in Ajman, I think it sets the standard for the region, but also right across the UAE, too. Working with Troon Golf has been crucial to setting that high standard.” Visitors to Al Zorah Golf Club can also experience a welcoming and magnificently-structured Pavilion clubhouse, as well as a Shakespeare and Co. restaurant, with plans also in place for more off-course attractions in the coming years. “By 2018, a brand new clubhouse will be in place,” states General Manager Henderson. The Al Zorah Golf Club site has also been designated a Free Hold Zone by the Government of Ajman, meaning the land is not only legal to build on, but also to live on. Constructed in conjunction with real estate developer and property manager Solidere International (SI), there are 42 Al Zorah Golf Villas as part of an initial development. Wallonia

Wallonia Play golf in Belgium’s French-speaking region and feel inspired The southern region of Belgium, Wallonia, is a jewel of a destination that sparkles with centuries of history, glorious nature, fascinating culture, wonderful gastronomy, beautiful cities, towns and villages, and a smiling welcome as warm as you will find anywhere. For golfers, there is the added bonus of 35 golf courses, from the classic designs of its venerable royal golf clubs to modern, contoured layouts, several by noted architects.

Royal Golf Club du Hainaut

Celebrated names to have added stardust to Wallonia’s fairways include Tom Simpson (Royal Golf Club des Fagnes, Royal Golf Club du Sart Tilman and the first two nine-hole layouts at Royal Golf Club du Hainaut), Robert Trent Jones Sr (Golf du Bercuit, his only design in Belgium), father and son golf architects Fred and Martin Hawtree (Fred: Royal Waterloo Golf Club’s La Marache layout, Royal Golf Club du Hainaut’s Les Etangs nine and Golf de Durbuy; and Naxhelet Golf Club and Golf Chateau de la Tournette’s English Course among Martin’s designs), and South African golf legend Gary Player (Five Nations Golf Club).

Wallonia’s golf clubs all welcome visitors, from golfing groups to couples, families and ladies, although some members’ clubs have limited tee time availability for non-members at weekends.

Wallonia

Besides its 18-hole facilities, Wallonia has a number of excellent nine-hole courses that offer players a challenge in settings just as aesthetic as their bigger siblings. Among them are Royal Waterloo Golf Club’s wooded and undulating Le Bois Heros, a par 32 designed by Fred Hawtree and renovated in 2003 by his son, Martin, plus par-34 courses at Avernas Golf Atop Waterloo’s Lion Mound Club, Golf de Liege – Bernalmont, Florennes Avia Golf Club and Andenne Golf Club. All require handicap certificates.

This part of Europe has been fought over time and again, and reminders of key battles from the Napoleonic era to World War II can be found across Wallonia in the form of memorials, battlefield sites and museums, often close to delightful golf courses.

Golf in Wallonia is also great value for the great quality on offer, with green fees ranging from 35-125 euros, particularly if you factor in the outstanding food in clubhouse restaurants.

Easy access Wherever you stay you will find a golf course within a short drive. The region is so compact that getting around takes no time at all, either in your own car or in a rented vehicle, thanks to its network of toll-free motorways and N-designated national roads. No two golf destinations in Wallonia are more than two hours apart, while its towns and cities are easy to drive to from other countries. Getting to Wallonia is effortless, too. Flights go to Brussels Airport and Charleroi’s Brussels South Airport, in Wallonia, from capitals and secondary cities throughout Europe. There are fast roads from its four neighbouring countries as well as cross-Channel and North Sea ferry ports and the Channel Tunnel from the UK. Brussels is two hours by Eurostar from London and connected by high-speed rail services from several European cities, and a good domestic rail network links Wallonia’s cities with Brussels.

Short city golf breaks Wallonia’s courses are mainly clustered around its cities, so a short break that mixes golf with a city stay is an enticing option. Not only can you discover their rich tapestry of architecture, art, music and traditions but you can also sample the region’s varied cuisine, its beers and spirits a stroll away from your hotel. Alternatively, stay at golf courses with on-site hotels and travel in to the cities after a round. These are cities that lend themselves to short breaks with golf: Mons European Capital of Culture in 2015, Hainaut provincial capital Mons packs a lot into its hilly, cobbled streets, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as museums, art galleries and other historic edifices to visit. Another four UNESCO sites are within 25km of the city. Courses:

Royal Club du Hainaut and Mont Garni Golf Club are a short drive from the city centre. Golf Club Enghien is half an hour’s drive.

Mont Garni Golf Club

Liege Liege is perfect to explore on foot on a city break, boasting Europe’s largest pedestrian precinct and with many sights and attractions in its historic centre. Long a crossroads between some of Europe’s key cities, it is split by the River Meuse, along which you can take boat tours.

Courses:

International Gomze Golf Club

Royal Golf Club du Sart Tilman and the nine-hole Golf Club de Liege-Bernalmont are both only 10 minutes from the city centre and International Gomze Golf Club is just 15 minutes away, with several others within a half-hour drive. Golf Club Mergelhof and Golf & Hotel Henri-Chapelle, close to the Dutch border, are less than a 40-minute drive from Liege.

Namur Wallonia’s capital lies at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, the point at which they meet overlooked by the imposing Namur Citadel, one of the largest citadels in Europe. The city has a pedestrianised heart with historic buildings and plenty of restaurants. Courses:

Golf & Hotel de Falnuee, Golf de Rougemont and the nine-hole Andenne Golf Club are all less than 20 minutes from Namur, while Golf la Bruyere, Golf Club de Louvain-la-Neuve and Golf de Rigenee are among others 30 minutes or less from the city centre.

Spa There’s no better place to soak away your post-round aches than in the thermal spring waters of the town that gave its name to health and wellness centres. The world’s first health resort, Spa has been attracting visitors – among them England’s King Henry VIII and Charles II, and Russia’s Peter the Great – for its mineral spring waters for almost five centuries. The Royal Golf Club elegant town, situated in the forested Ardennes, still des Fagnes welcomes tourists from far and wide today. As well as its Thermes de Spa thermal baths, Spa’s other attractions include its opulent Casino, several museums and parks and nearby Spa-Francorchamps race track. Courses:

Royal Golf Club des Fagnes and nine-hole Golf du Haras lie just outside the town and other courses are within 30 minutes’ drive.

Waterloo A name that resonates for the famous defeat of Napoleon, this charming town is worth lingering over as a base for golf and to visit the museums and sites that vividly portray events before and during the decisive battle. Among them are the new, underground Memorial 1815 museum, built alongside the towering Lion Mound memorial that overlooks the battlefield, and the newly-renovated Wellington Museum, an inn when the Duke of Wellington established his HQ. Courses close to Waterloo include Royal Waterloo Golf Club, Sept Fontaines Golf Club, L’Empereur Relais Golf & Country Club, Golf Chateau de la Tournette, Golf du Chateau de la Bawette, Golf Club d’Hulencourt, Golf du Bercuit and Golf Club de Louvain-La-Neuve.

Durbuy Tiny in terms of its size and population – it proclaims itself as the world’s smallest city – Durbuy is huge in what it offers visitors. This picture-postcard little town nestles on the banks of the River Ourthe in the heart of the Ardennes and ancient stone buildings housing restaurants, cafes and shops line its cobbled streets. Golf de Durbuy and Five Nations Golf Club are both a short distance from Durbuy.

Wallonia

Royal golf courses Golf has a long association with Wallonia, the game making its first appearance in the region more than 120 years ago. All golf courses in Belgium that are more than 50 years old now carry the royal prefix. Of the 11 royal courses throughout the country, five of them are in Wallonia – Royal Golf Club du Chateau Royal d’Ardenne, near Dinant (founded in 1895), Royal Golf Club des Fagnes, near Spa (1930), Royal Golf Club du Hainaut, near Mons (1933), Royal Golf Club du Sart Tilman, near Liege (1939) and Royal Waterloo Golf Club (established in its present location in 1961 but with its origins in 1923). All exude a sense of history and tradition.

Royal Golf Club des Fagnes

Excellent clubhouse facilities Wallonia’s clubhouses come in many forms, from the rustic, thatched-roof clubhouse at Royal Golf Club du Hainaut to stately examples, such as the Leopold Tower of the Royal Golf Club du Chateau d’Ardennes, the chateau of Sept Fontaines Golf Club and Mont Garni Golf Club’s Anglo-Norman edifice. Some clubhouses are sleek and modern, as in the clubhouse at Royal Golf Club du Sart Tilman, while others have been converted from historic fermeschateaux (fortified castle farms), among them the 16th century Golf Chateau de la Tournette and those at Golf & Hotel de Falnuee, Golf de Pierpont, Five Nations Golf Club, Naxhelet Golf Club and L’Empereur Relais Golf & Country Club.

Golf du Chateau de la Bawette

Yet despite their different styles, they all offer superb facilities, whether it’s high-class cuisine, relaxing lounges and welcoming bars or wellstocked pro shops offering rental equipment (often with both men’s and ladies’ clubs and with graphite or steel shafts) and locker rooms with showers.

Golf and nature Nature abounds in Wallonia, both on and around its golf courses, with the spectacular, mountainous Ardennes its crowning glory. Explore ancient forests, scenic rivers, beautiful lakes, rushing waterfalls and stalactite-filled caves. Play golf in Wallonia and you are surrounded by nature. Its courses may be easy to reach from its major towns and cities but there are so many forests and so much countryside even close to conurbations that you always feel you are a world away from the hubbub. Despite being on the fringes of bustling Liege, Wallonia’s second-largest city, Royal Golf Club du Sart Tilman is flanked by thick forest of the University of Liege and has electric fences on its boundary to keep out wild boars. You can see deer, squirrels, hares and birds aplenty on many courses, but Golf de Durbuy even has beavers! Several of the protected mammals are residents in ponds on the course and the golf club has to spray trees on the course with a special liquid to deter them from gnawing at the trunks. The club also has some rare wild orchids endemic to the area.

Golf Club Enghien is laid out alongside the thickly-wooded 17th century park of Enghien Castle, north of Mons, at the centre of which is an octagonal formal garden surrounding a baroque pavilion, glimpses of which can be seen from the course. The region’s royal golf courses all have fairways threading through majestic, ancient trees. Royal Golf Club du Chateau Royal d’Ardenne, near Dinant, was laid out in the park of the Castle d’Ardenne and Golf du Chateau de la Bawette lies in a wooded estate near Wavre.

Golf Club Enghien

Naxhelet Golf Club, which opened in 2014 near Huy, works with renowned bioagronomist consultant and master greenkeeper Ian Macmillan to keep its course as environmentally-friendly as possible. The course, which has fairways lined by carpets of daisies and other wild flowers, uses no fungicides at all and only sprays pesticide on its fairways and tall rough to keep out invasive species such as thistle. It recently became the first golf course in Wallonia to become GEO Certified by the Golf Environment Organization.

Golf Tourism England

Golf Tourism England Showcasing one of the most compelling golf destinations in the world Golf Tourism England (GTE) is the membership body that represents the golf tourism industry in England, committed to the delivery of a first-class golf travel experience across England. Set up in 2014 to promote England as a major golfing destination, it has been awarded one of the first grants from the Discover England Fund, part of Visit England’s government-driven investment to fuel inbound visitor levels. Moortown Golf Club

In its aim to raise the profile of England as a golf destination nationally and internationally, GTE’s initial strategy has involved creating a series of clusters that bring together some of the nations’ finest golf experiences. While recognising all of England’s golf clubs as its focus, to kick off the campaign, GTE has used five key golfing regions to showcase England’s remarkable golf credentials. These include Yorkshire’s Ryder Cup Experience, Kent’s Championship Links, Heathland Classics across London and the South East, England’s Golf Coast in the North West and the South West Atlantic Links.

GTE’s strategy is clear: cumulative attraction will unlock cumulative gains. By encouraging neighbouring clubs to work together and collaborate with local hotels, service providers and other attractions, incoming visitors can enjoy an enhanced, bookable and deliverable itinerary. Ultimately, GTE seeks to create a supply chain in each region that will enable visitors to benefit from a seamless service and thereby enjoy a first-class experience. Meanwhile England will enjoy a fresh new perception and reap new economic rewards with increased footfall across the country’s network of golf, leisure, entertainment and cultural experiences.

62

Golf Tourism England

Golf Tourism England has also recognised the importance of developing relationships with tour operators and educating the trade on England’s rich offering. GTE is fuelling fresh thinking and encouraging progress to the benefit of the nation’s golf tourism stakeholders through a series of initiatives, including member workshops in efforts to identify new business practices and the most efficient means to drive the nation’s golf tourism economy. With more golf clubs than the other Home The Belfry Nations combined, and an existing, functional infrastructure, England via GTE is primed to benefit from a centralised golf tourism push. Part of the initial phase of the development will focus on educating consumers, media and the industry stakeholders in England. A nationwide toolkit, comprising England’s premium golf clubs and resorts, will allow international tour operators to access key suppliers and package experiences. The toolkit will also serve to educate stakeholders such as golf courses, hotels and suppliers on the potential value of golf tourism into England, how it needs to be serviced and how it can be connected and promoted. An ongoing aim of GTE’s is to grow its membership with more golf clubs and resorts, thus broadening England’s golf offering and making England’s golf tourism more lucrative.

Golf Tourism England

The development of GTE’s digital platform will be a major advancement in 2017 and beyond with consumerfriendly functionality, trade connectivity and international promotions increasing the understanding of why England is a golf tourism hotspot. The development includes an updated website that not only showcases England’s golf St Enodoc Golf Club tourism offering but links to key international tour operators, allowing consumers to explore the courses, resorts and surrounding areas, as well as additional cultural and entertainment experiences. An increased social media presence utilising a bank of stunning imagery and video will also encourage engagement with potential golf visitors. GTE will also release a series of videos produced to depict England’s golf offering as well as new digital communication tools, making it an exceptionally exciting time for Golf Tourism England. Home to almost 1,900 golf courses, many of which are widely recognised as some of the finest in the world, England’s golf offering is a strong and immensely viable one, but it is also the quality and breadth of experiences off-course that makes England one of the most compelling golf destinations in the world. Now, thanks to the work of Golf Tourism England, the country is looking forward to making its mark on the international golf tourism map. Seeking a destination full of great golf and unforgettable adventures? Look no further than the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Life flows a little differently along these 62 miles of scenic shoreline nestled between Louisiana and Alabama, inviting golf travellers to have some good old-fashioned fun on and off the course. The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers a variety of courses, many of which were created by the top course designers in the world, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Davis Love III, Mark McCumber, Jerry Pate and Tom Fazio. There are options for every skill level and budget here. Whether visitors are golf pros or just looking to casually hit the links, they will find the perfect course, such as one of these.

The Preserve Golf Club

The Beau Rivage’s Fallen Oak raises the bar for luxury resort golf. It has been among the top courses for both Conde Nast Traveler and Golfweek magazines.

The Preserve Golf Club receives its name from its beautiful nature preserve surroundings, which have been integrated into the course design. The Preserve’s GPS Visage system on all golf carts allows golfers to hear a hole-to-hole description of the course and tips from experts on how to play before teeing off. Hollywood Casino’s The Bridges Golf Club – Mississippi’s only Arnold Palmer signature golf course – sits on 600 acres of moss-draped oaks, stately pines and magnolias. The Bridges is the first resort golf course in the world to obtain Audubon International’s Certified Silver Signature status, which displays one of Palmer’s greatest design strengths of working in harmony with nature.

Oregon, USA

Oregon, USA We like golf in Oregon. You might too. With more than 200 acclaimed public golf courses, Oregon ranks high on golfers’ bucket lists. Picking your tee time is the easy part. Choosing one of Oregon’s award-winning courses is the real challenge. Tee off from on an oceanfront sand dune. Play alongside the professionals. Surf the turf on a GolfBoard. Get to the course before the championships. Golf in Oregon is a completely unique experience – and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Sunriver, Central Oregon It’s no wonder Sunriver Resort was chosen to host the 2017 PGA Professional Championship – and to host the IAGTO 2018 North America Golf Tourism Convention (NAC). With four distinct award-winning courses located along wetlands, meadows and waters, Sunriver is a premier golf destination with dramatic and aesthetic challenges at every hole. Crosswater Golf Club, designed by Bob Cupp, is the official course of the 2017 PGA Professional Championship. Honoured by Golf Digest as one of America’s 100 Greatest Courses, the 600-acre heathland-style Crosswater weaves around the Deschutes River with bent grass fairways and five tee placements on each hole. The Woodlands, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, is a Pacific Northwest favourite with abundant water and lava rock outcroppings. Also a Bob Cupp design, Caldera Links is a family-friendly nine-hole course, with holes ranging from 60 to 185 yards. Meadows Putting Course, design by John Fought, is an exciting nine-hole course that’s fun for every skill level. Named one of the Top 10 Destinations for Family Golf by Golf Digest, Sunriver offers a variety of places to play, with easy access to off-course activities like horseback riding, white-water rafting, cycling trails and more.

Bandon Preserve

Bandon Dunes, Oregon Coast You’ve probably heard of Bandon Dunes. Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is unlike any other. Four world-class courses unfold along a sweeping shoreline, grassy dunes and towering coastal forest. Beyond the stunning scenery is a unique, true-to-form game of golf. Firm turf, challenging tee shots and the occasional strong ocean breeze make for an unforgettable experience. Bandon Dunes is regularly ranked among the world’s top golf Bandon Dunes resorts. The namesake course, designed by David McKay Kidd, is considered the first genuine Scottish-style links course in the U.S. Year after year, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is honoured, from Golf Digest’s Best Resort in North America in 2011 to all four courses ranked highly in Golfweek’s Best Modern Courses and GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play. And the accolades keep coming. In 2020, the resort will host the US Amateur Championship.

Running Y, Southern Oregon Featuring the only Arnold Palmer signature course in Oregon, Running Y Ranch Resort is a premier destination for international golfers. The prestigious Palmer even named Running Y as one of his favourite 16 designs. And he’s not alone. Running Y is a regular on Golf Week’s Oregon Top 10 and ranked number one on Golf Advisor’s Top 20 Golf Courses in Oregon. The 72-par, 7,133-yard course is surrounded by impressive beauty, overlooking the unspoiled Oregon Outback. The front skirts meadows and an extensive wetlands area while the back fairways wind through lake-dotted woodlands. With five tee boxes on each hole, the course welcomes players of all skill levels. And thanks to more than 300 days of sunshine in Klamath Falls, it’s open year-round. 82
