He would never stay indoors. Instead, he roamed the streets of Nairobi in a wild and frantic frenzy. The spirits had come back. Years before, in the upcountry village, Timothy had been known as the mad man. He was naked…and covered in the animal feces he would eat. He would speak words no one could understand…nor would want to understand. He was a small man with thin, frail body, but it was augmented with the supernatural power of demons. No one could hold him down. And now, the demons had returned…with a vengeance. His wife, Christine, a born-again believer, knew where the battle would be fought and won…in the unseen world, in the realm of spiritual battles… invisible but nonetheless real. She prayed and fasted for days on end, as Timothy continued on his mad rampage. After weeks, she was finally able to find a pastor. A man filled with Faith, rather than Fear. A true disciple of Jesus Christ. The pastor knew what we all need to know: where, why and how to stand in Christ while battling the Spiritual Forces of Darkness. They found Timothy wandering the slums naked and in a rage. It took five adults to hold him down as the saints prayed. And the demons left. If that was the end of the story, it would be a tragedy. For the Bible instructs us not only to “cast out”, but more importantly to “put on”. As Timothy resumed a more normal and sober state, he willingly and cheerfully accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior. Without that critical step, the victory over the demons would have been hollow at best… temporary at most. And so began the testimony of a faithful, fearless Christian wife…and a demondelivered husband. Fast-forward fifteen years. Timothy has returned to his upcountry village. He is, once again, feared and shunned. Not by the common people, but by the demons themselves. He is known today as Pastor Timothy. Pastor of a healthy, growing and spiritually strong congregation in the very village he once terrorized. He oversees fifteen additional churches, including eight from the Bishop who first prayed for his deliverance from the demons. He is much sought after as a respected and straightforward teacher of the Word of God. Invitations come from churches and pastors fellowships throughout the region. And he points everyone to the Lord Jesus Christ…and His Word…and the Battle to be won. Each week, Pastor Timothy travels on a bus all Friday night, in order to attend Bible School on Saturday. He arrives by 6.00 a.m., attends classes the entire day, and leaves at 5.30 p.m. He then boards the overnight bus in Nairobi to arrive back in his village by Sunday morning…in time to lead a full day of church services. He has been faithfully

attending the Bible School for four years. His energy and enthusiasm for Christ is unmatched. He is, as his Bishop says, “a living testimony of the power of Jesus Christ”. This power was inserted and unleashed because some Christians had the courage, faith and fortitude to enter the spiritual battle…the necessary warfare for Timothy’s liberation from an unseen enemy. Scripture clearly confirms there is an unseen world that contains the control center for wickedness and evil. It is not something we generally feel comfortable discussing in our humanistic, secular and “Western” culture…nonetheless it exists and prospers in our day. Choosing to ignore it is to give heed to its greatest weapon…Deception. The Bible says that Satan himself is the “ruler of this world” (Jn 12.31) and holds sway over the hearts and minds of those who are not “in Christ”…whether or not they know it or believe it. Most of us did not recognize this domineering influence and bondage until we later became Christians. Even now, many deceptive doctrines and man-made traditions negate, or at least neglect, the essential battle we are to wage against the Devil, his demons and devices. Spiritual warfare is an essential element of a holy and victorious life in Christ…

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemings of the Devil. For we do not battle against flesh and blood, but against Principalities, against Powers, against the Rulers of the Darkness of this age, against Spiritual Hosts of Wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6.11

When we are bluntly honest, we all know this to be true about the unseen Spiritual realm. But when the forces of evil become tangible and visible, many fear and falter. Even well intentioned, well-churched Christians. The Deceiver has woven an intricate web of apathy, ignorance and avoidance of such malicious manifestations. Yet God has clearly warned us to be Awake, Aware…and Active!

“…to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be known by the church to the Principalities and Powers (of darkness) in the heavenly places, according to the Eternal Purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have Boldness and Access with Confidence through Faith in Him. Therefore, I ask that you Do not lose heart…” Ephesians 3.10

This is a “call to arms” for the Church. The manifestations of the evil spiritual realm are not to be feared, but rather faced. Jesus, as the Son of Man, faced them, the apostles and disciples then faced them…and we are now called to follow in those steps. Demonic manifestations are deliberately designed to intimidate us, but they need not. The mere appearance of Christ was enough to shake the Powers of Darkness… “And when Jesus stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, Nor did he live in a house But in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, He cried out, Fell down before Jesus, And with a loud voice said, ‘What have it do to with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, Do not torment me!’ ” Lk 8.27

Satan and his demons feared Christ as He walked this earth. They equally fear Christ in us today. Our greatest victories begin in Holiness, Fear of God and Submission to Christ. Our greatest mistake is avoiding the inevitable Spiritual battles. Ignoring Satan, his coworkers, schemes and manifestations is a formula for certain spiritual failure. We are called, instead, to boldly enter the Battle…sober, submitted, serious and spiritually strong… “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the Power of His might.” Ephesians 6.10

And watch the Darkness flee!
