Case Study Comments on First Revised Model Suggestions

In south of Taiwan there are many ways to prevent the flood. ◦  Stilt house ◦  Sluice Door ◦  Flood Storage Pond ◦  Pump ◦  Sandbag

Stilt houses are built primarily as a protection against flooding. The shady space under the house can be used for work or storage.


} 

} 

} 

Sluice door is a door which can adjust its height. People can decide sluice door’s height according to the size of the flood. It is always used in front of elevators, underground parking or entrance. 


Flood storage is a common approach in controlling the quantity of floodwater runoff. }  Store a portion of the surface runoff coming from the upstream and allow a limited flow to the downstream of the catchment. }  As a result, the flow rate is restricted to stay within the capacity of the downstream drainage system.  } 


A pump is a device that moves fluids by mechanical action. }  In Taiwan, there would be 2~3 pumps placed in the basement for pumping out the water caused by flood. } 


A sack that is filled with sand or soil and used for flood prevention. }  An inexpensive and convenient way to prevent flood that the bags can be brought in empty and filled with local sand or soil. }

Have advantages of stilt house, reducing damages of flood. }  The space at ground floor can be used flexibly. }  The available space is more than before. }

Comments Converting the shape of existing }  Columns have fewer rectangular damages when columns to circular. flood is coming, providing the reinforcement.

Prevent staircase from eroding away in flood. Metal doors have been provided in the enclosure.

People may feel confused because six doors are too many for a space. The enclosure is not necessary because the staircase is still flooded and may be eroded when flood is coming.

Alternative 1

Take the staircase enclosure off. }  Make an entrance in the 2nd floor. } 

Reasons } 

The water of flood can flow more unimpededly if there are no walls on the first floor.


Alternative 2 } 

Replace some doors in ground floor with windows.

Both door and window can provide openings to let water flow in and out.

Reasons

Consider human’s feeling about space. }  Windows have similar function of providing openings for water to flow in and out. }

For alternative 1

◦  The problem that six doors confuse people is gone. ◦  There are some concerns about erosion of staircase. ◦  It would take time to consider the erosion issue and reverse model.

} 

For alternative 2

◦  The problem that six doors confuse people is solved. ◦  It is faster to reach consensus and reverse model.

we choose alternative 2.


Alternative

Increase the size of columns. }  Add tie beams under the ground.  } 

Reasons

Based on the project Jason did, this way can strengthen the structure of building. }  The foundation can be more strong to support the reversed building. } 


YU made structure analysis and concluded that the model is strong enough. }  IIT mentioned that the building is existing so that the reversion of foundation is not possible in limited resource. } 

u Thus,

we do not have any reversion of foundation.

Sandbags and pumps can be stored as an additional way to prevent flood. The space enclosed by walls around staircase can be used to store sandbags and pumps.
