Narration. Beyond language. In preparation for the Upstream Atelier The Foreign Telling in May 2012, we concerned ourselves already in a seminar in early spring with the question what documentations, travel accounts, and experience reports by designers can look like, which means they can use, and how design can be developed and understood as reflective storytelling. In order to connect the question’s theoretical – i.e. aesthetic and dramaturgical – implications with its design implications we chose the storyboard as a concrete object of illustration and analysis. In so far as this seminar joined together two seminars which during the academic year take place separately, one about design theory (Regine Halter), the other about design practice (Catherine Walthard), we are glad we could win Alex Silber, who combines both realms, as additional lecturer. The following texts describe positions and approaches of the three lecturers. At the same time, they present the particular issues on which we worked as well as the project examples we used.

How does what I design think? How do I design what I think?
