Programme of Events 9th – 15th March 2020

What it’s all about? The idea of CLAW – Coleshill Local Arts Week was born last year, so this is the bigger second year return, with a theme for the year! The Mayor of Coleshill, Cllr. Adam Richardson, and the Town Council staff have been working on an Arts Week idea since the middle of 2019. It runs from 9th to 15th March and at the centre of it are the Friday to Sunday night events at the Cameo Suite (A Night at the Musicals) and Town Hall (the Bear Paw film night and a Kiriki Club live concert through "Live & Local"). There is a “Film of the Book” theme this year. The schools and library and some voluntary groups are doing some art themed events during the weekdays and daytime at the weekend. A number of other organisations wanted to do something with an Arts / literature theme that week to include in the programme. There is a minimal budget for this festival week. The whole week is being organised through the Mayor's charity events programme. In that way, room hire charges can be waived. Any extra income that comes of any events will cover minimal costs or be put into a fund that might then help run the event next year. Therefore, please get involved in whatever way you can in March 2020 and give CLAW a bright future into the 2020s and beyond. We need thoughts on next year’s theme!

Brian Nicholson – Local Artist Brian Nicholson was born in Saltley, Birmingham. From an early age he loved to draw and studied part-time at Birmingham College of Arts & Crafts. Those days, he would have sketching expeditions to Coleshill and the surrounding countryside on his BSA bicycle. After National Service in the RAF he worked as a technical illustrator for the automotive, aircraft, power generation and water distribution industries. He spends much of his leisure time scribbling and reckons to make a drawing every day. He has put together the CLAW display (Thursday 12—Sunday 15) from his studio and from works loaned by friends and hopes visitors find it interesting and entertaining. 2

Green & Yellow Heritage Tour – 14 March These tours run monthly and, with Heritage Lottery Funding, are currently free. An Arts Week special tour will run on 14 March and start at 2 p.m. from the CASPER Art Space. A 2-mile round trip, starting and finishing at the Art Space on the High Street in Coleshill (B46 3BG) and takes in 12 talking points of heritage and historic interest, lasting around 90 – 120 minutes.

Booking is essential - 01675 463326 from 9-1, Monday to Friday (with a 24-hour answer-machine).

Coleshill Country Market and Rabbit Pie The Country Market meets every Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Rooms. On Friday 13th there will be plenty of the usual arts and crafts items for sale as well as a few special ‘arty’ cakes and food items, as usual, available. This year, the Country Market will be producing a special “Coleshill Artisan Pie”, made from ingredients particular to the town from a bygone era. These will include rabbit, which used to be in abundance (Coleshill Town FC got the nickname of the Rabbits because it served Rabbit Pie after the match) plus turnips and parsnips and root veg. A small quantity of Coleshill Artisan Pie for “heating ‘n’ eating” can be ordered from the 6th March Country Market to collect on the 13th March one. The recipe is for rabbit but the pies for order will be chicken as this might be more popular with all the family! 3

Coleshill Schools Schools in the Coleshill Consortium are being challenged to come up with designs and work to be part of CLAW 2020. Some are welcoming the local community to come along and see the children's work. The Mayor of Coleshill, Cllr. Adam Richardson will visit some of the exhibitions.

Woodlands, Packington Lane The pupils of Woodlands School, Packington Lane are working on art work before and during CLAW. This will then be on display in the Town Hall from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th March on display boards in the Old Courtroom. This allows them to be viewed over the weekend while audience and players for the performance groups are in the building (see page 8).

High Meadow, Norton Road High Meadow School is to have its in-school Art Week over the CLAW week. Watch out for more details.

St. Edwards School—design winner Bethany O’Brien, the pupil of St. Edwards School won the CLAW logo design competition (see design on the front cover of the booklet). She will be invited to one of this year’s events.

Old Market Hall At 8:15p.m. on Thursday, there is a £2 entry to see the film: Old Coleshill (Old and New). The Hall will be open as usual on Saturday 14 March a.m. to view “The Collection”. Stagecoach Group is performing upstairs as well at the same time, so see both in a morning! 4
