Evaluation Question 6 Throughout the whole As Media course I have used a whole range of programs and various websites. These programs and websites have greatly improved my media experience and have helped with simplifying the way in which I present my work.
Photoshop There is only one main application that I used throughout the course and that was Adobe Photoshop CS5.1. If this application wasn’t used then I wouldn’t have been able to produce the amount of work and the same quality of work that I have produced now. With Photoshop you are able to make the finished magazine look like a professional piece of work by using the vast amount of options that it provides. If we had to produce the magazine in any other application I don’t think the finished product would have been as well presented. For example if I made something in the paint application then it probably would have looked quite amateur in comparison with making it on Photoshop. The main advantages are that it is a professional program for making professional looking graphics. In a way this made it a lot easier to produce a much better looking magazine but it still challenges the user to use everything that it offers. I could make a very simple magazine on Photoshop and it could look terrible, so you still need the dedication to be able to make a good piece. The main disadvantages are that it can at times be very hard to do the most simplistic things. For people who haven’t used Photoshop before it could prove quite challenging. But we did get some tips in how to use Photoshop when we made the college magazines. Luckily I have used Photoshop before, not a lot, but at a standard that I could do the simple things. I also have an advantage of having it at home so I got a bit of practice as well. But as I said above the simple things can prove hard to the people that haven’t used it before let alone the more complicated tools.
Blogger The main website used throughout the whole course all of our work will go on here even this word document as well. Here it is easily presented and also very easy to access. Also instead of trying to find things are saying you left your work at home with blogger there really isn’t any accuses because it is all on the web. The downside of this is that obviously the internet can go down however this is easily fixable. Another problem is that blogger might want to close your blog down for various reasons which would get rid of anything that you may have wrote on the blog, this is also easily avoidable if the person does all their writing in Word and then uses Issuu to
upload it as a flip book on the blog. What is also useful is that all the information on what to do is on the blogs so all work can actually be done at home if needed to. Main advantages: easy access, on the web, can be done at home. There was a point where I missed a lot of lessons but I easily caught up by doing quite a lot of work at home. I actually prefer this type of style of doing things it’s just much easier. Disadvantages are that it can be shut down and the internet can go down but these things are easily fixable and are not major disadvantages. Also due to the difference from GCSE teaching to this sort of teaching there will be problem. But as I said above it is actually easier in my opinion. It is also harder to make it look visually appealing without accidently deleting something.
Flickr Whoever thought of this to use for this work was a genius. Instead of constantly writing everything down on a piece of paper, which is ok for some people, you can just annotate the picture of the magazine by making the boxes and typing in them. It was immensely useful and was a big help for me in the whole of the course. I think this website is definitely one of the reasons why I love media studies it makes my life so much easier. My handwriting is terrible and I don’t like taking the time to make it look good because I can’t draw either. With Flickr it is neat and I can type everything. It’s also much quicker because normally you would have to print out the picture first and then annotate it. With Flickr I can just upload a picture and away I go. I used Flickr for all of my Cover, contents, and double page spread analyses. In a way it still took a long time because I had to do 2 covers, 2 contents, and 2 double page spreads. But it would have taken me even longer if I had to do it on a sheet of paper. It would also be quite stressful to hit deadlines that I wouldn’t be motivated to hit. Advantages: easy to upload, quick and simple, don’t need to make it look neat because it is already neat, no paper and pens involved. I don’t think there are any disadvantages to be honest it really an immense help to a person that wouldn’t be motivated to make 6 annotated sheets of work.
Issuu This website was used to turn my word applications into flip books which are much easier to use and are more visually affective than typing it on the blog. I am also going to turn this into a flip book because of the amount of page it is going to be. In blogger it is quite hard to make the things typed to look visually appealing. So to simplify the process of making it look good it would also be easier to make it in word. So Issuu made this possible my converting the Word documents into flip books keeping text formats and the various pictures
that might be on it. Like Flickr it made my life a lot easier and I was also able to make my work like a bit more neat and tidy. Advantages: allows you to use your already made pieces of text easier to read and go through keeping all the visually effective photos and font formats. Disadvantages: I don’t think there is any seeing as this makes everyone’s lives. However if you were planning to do some work at home and didn’t have Word then I guess you would have to go buy it but a lot of people have word at home so easily fixable disadvantage.
Slideshare This website was used to turn a PowerPoint into a slideshow. It was quite helpful in showing the stepbystep progression when making the magazine. Firstly by putting it in PowerPoint and then turning it into a slideshow. I have only used this once because I don’t think there was anything else that I wanted to use it for except for the stepbystep. It was useful though and saved me time on doing it on blogger. It’s easy to navigate as well so it makes it visually appealing. Advantages: easy to use, saves time, neat and quick. Disadvantages are that I have heard that it can mess up some of the things used in PowerPoint, like the timing system. However apart from this it is useful. It doesn’t have to be used but it is quicker and neater so I used it and liked it.
DaFont I have used this websites in many things before so I trust this site to ALWAYS give me the font I need. It is easy to navigate and helps find fonts that look good for your magazine easy. A DaFont font was used for my main mast head which now looks really good. It’s a very reliable site and I will definitely keep using it in the future for other media related work. However there is a very big disadvantage that I always don’t like. It is quite annoying that you have to print screen then delete everything around it, this normally leaves blacks marks once trying to manipulate it and change the background. However it is the only option that is on the internet without paying and without too much hassle. Without this website I don’t think I would have been able to get the right professional looking font that I would want for my type of magazine. Advantages: The best website to get fonts, easy and quick navigation. Disadvantages are that it is annoying to print screen and also it may become annoying when trying to find a specific looking font you may be left searching for ages because of the vast amount of choices.
I think I may have been the only one to use this. I used Facebook because I wanted to get general feedback on my finished pieces in case they needed improving. I didn’t want to do anything survey from Survey Monkey because that was quite boring having to type out all the questions. So instead I just wanted to know what people think. Seeing as I have a vast amount of friends on Facebook I got a fair amount of people that looked at the magazine parts and I got an overall good reaction to them. Here is my front cover: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=747181914#!/photo.php? fbid=10150486269571915&set=a.10150293830931915.335259.747181914&type=1&theater Here is my double page spread: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=747181914#!/photo.php? fbid=10150491872656915&set=a.10150293830931915.335259.747181914&type=1&theater And here is my contents page: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=747181914#!/photo.php? fbid=10150529094876915&set=a.10150293830931915.335259.747181914&type=1&theater Please ignore the random comments made by mainly me and friends instead please focus on the likes and constructive criticism. The contents page didn’t get much but that’s because I showed it to people inside of college and the overall comments where that it looked really good and professional.
