Welcome to the 16th annual Highway 62 Open Studio Art Tour, hosted by the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council. Since our beginning in 2001 the MBCAC has been a 501 3C non-profit organization run by an all-volunteer board of dedicated of artists and patrons of the arts. Over the past 16 years, the Arts Council has evolved from a group of about 5 board members meeting in private homes to the current board of 11 members, with an office at Gallery 62 in Joshua Tree, with nearly 300 members. Since our first Studio art tour with less than 15 artists represented, we have grown to one of the largest Open Studio Art Tours representing over 135 artists in studios and group sites stretching from Morongo Valley in the West to Wonder Valley in the East along a 50 mile stretch of Highway 62. As you can see on the map in our catalog, our artists are in: Morongo Valley, Pioneertown, Landers, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and 29 Palms. We have so many studios spread over such a large area our tour spans two full weekends in October, which is the very best time of the year to be explore the highways and byways along the North border of the Joshua Tree National Park. During the past year the artists of the Morongo Basin have been working to prepare for the many visitors from around the country that are expected during the Open Studio tour. Although many of the studios are located a few miles North or South of Highway 62, and often on dirt roads, the HWY 62 art tour signs, and the map in the catalog will show the way through some of the most interesting and diverse high desert landscapes in Southern California. In a few instances, we have found that following the map and road signs are more reliable that G.P.S. directions. Using the Studio Directions given by the artists in the catalog is the best way to find each studio (page 43). Thanks to the many hundreds of hours of dedicated work by our Art Tour Director, Patricia Knight and her committee, signing up many of the best artists, producing this catalog, planning the maps, and publicizing this event we have great expectations for this 16th year of the art tour being a great success for artists, sponsors and for the many visitors to our cherished high desert community. I want to thank our many sponsors and advertisers who have financed the publication of our catalog and advertising campaign. We all hope that your visit to the high desert will be most enjoyable and that you will come back many more times.

Welcome to HW Y 62 OPEN S TUDIO

ART TOURS MESSAGE FROM THE ART TOURS DIRECTOR Open Studio Art Tours – The tradition continues The Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours, now in its 16th year, is a one-ofa-kind experience for art lovers and art buyers to create a customized self-guided tour of the 80 plus open studios in the Morongo Basin and to speak directly with the artists about their work and creative endeavors in the intimacy of their private work spaces. I was fortunate to get a personal preview of the art tours this spring as I visited several artists to capture images of them working in their studios for this catalog. One of the highlights was visiting the studio of Eric Banas (Studio #71) as he was working on a metal sculpture being commissioned by our very own Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council. I also had the privilege of venturing into Joshua Tree National Park with landscape photographer, Mitch Miller (Studio #70) as he captured the sunrise over Hidden Valley. While you’re planning your self-guided tour, be sure to attend the Downtown Joshua Tree Art Walk the evening of October 14th from 6 PM – 8 PM to see the Collective Show at Gallery 62. Eric Banas’ metal sculpture will also be on display. While you’re at Gallery 62 you can purchase a 2017 Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours Limited Edition T-Shirt created by local artist, Bill Copeland. I hope that you enjoy your time in the Morongo Basin, visiting the studios you have selected for your self-guided tour of this year’s open studios and getting to know the many creative artist s that are inspired by this unique desert landscape we call home.

Hwy 62 Open Studio Welcome to the 2017 Highway 62 Open Studio Art Tours. The present incarnation of the art tours began in 2001, but let’s turn back the clock and see where it all started. The first studio tour, sponsored by the 29 Palms Artists Guild, took place on Palm Sunday, April 7, 1968. Five studios participated. Nell Haverman displayed her oil paintings and her arts and crafts projects. Jean Crowl, an eclectic artist and antiques collector, opened her studio which was behind Doc Crowl’s animal hospital on Pill Hill, now known as Canyon Road in 29 Palms. The “Pill Hill Population 2” sign still stands today. William Peterson coordinated the Westward Ho theme at the gallery where the tour began. He demonstrated a desert landscape painting for the tour audience. Subsequent events became known as the Palm Sunday Studio Tours, as that’s the day they always took place. Visiting a working studio is a rare experience for most people, so once a year the 29 Palms Artists Guild made

10

arrangements with a few artists to open their studios to the public. In 1970, only 3 artists participated. Verne Gillespe and Madlyne Murray-Seales, who were also in the 1968 tour, and Gil and Dorothy Maxwell. Gillespe and Seales exhibited a large number of oil paintings, while the Maxwells brought in Native American treasures and artworks from New Mexico. The fifth tour fostered a religious atmosphere for its two participants due to it’s proximity to Easter. With the first wave of the gas shortage in 1975, the 8th annual Palm Sunday Studio Tours took place at the 29 Palms Art Gallery, which was established in 1951. Fifteen artists took part setting up displays and demonstrations. The next 4 years followed a similar format with up to 20 artists per year presenting their work. The last Palm Sunday Studio Tours took place in 1980. Now, fast forward to 2001. Mixed media artist Lucia Grossberger-Morales put together the basin’s first studio tour in 21 years. Twenty-four artists opened their homes and studios to visitors. The event was followed by an artist’s gathering.

Two Weekends: O C T 1 4 - 1 5 // O C T 2 1 - 2 2

At the same time local artist Chuck Caplinger, who had spearheaded the successful 2000 Global Mural Conference in 29 Palms, was heralding the benefits of art and tourism in the basin, but he felt something was missing. One afternoon he received a call from musician and producer Michael Callan who suggested that what the basin needed was an arts organization that included all artistic disciplines - two and three-dimensional art, music, theater, and dance. They met and invited Audrey and Owen Gillick, Spelman Evans-Downer and Vickie Waite to join them. During their first meeting, they agreed to start a nonprofit called the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council. They were soon joined by Kit Brooks, Cathy Svehla, and Linda Shrader. By 2002, they received their nonprofit status and began planning a basin-wide arts festival. This was a 10 day event where the studio tours would take place on the weekends, with theater, dance and music performances rounding out the week. More than 40 artists signed up for the tour portion of the festival. Huell Howser hosted the opening night gala at his home in 29 Palms. The event became known as the Highway 62 Open Studio Art Tours.

By 2005, 70 artists participated. The Morongo Basin was dubbed the New Bohemia and the area saw many artists of all disciplines migrating to this gorgeous spot to settle permanently and establish studios here. In 2011, 90 artists took part, and in 2014 visitors had to choose among 140 artists in 90 studios. This year there are more than 130 participants with studios in Morongo Valley, Wonder Valley, and all points in between. To our great delight, the entire Morongo Basin including Pioneertown, Landers and Flamingo Heights has become an artists playground. As you’re visiting the studios, keep in mind that many artists are open to creating something special just for you. If you find someone whose work you admire, makes you smile or inspires you, consider commissioning them to create a unique piece for you, your home or as a gift for someone your care for. Thank you for joining us this year. Enjoy your experience. May the Arts be with you. -- BY TEDDY TAPSCOTT

New on the

Something new is coming to Gallery 62. The Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council has commissioned a work of art from Joshua Tree reclamation artist Eric Banas. This piece will be approximately 8 to 9 feet tall. He has been working on it for almost a month already and it will be unveiled in September. His sculpture will be installed in front of Gallery 62 in Joshua Tree for everyone to enjoy. Eric creates oneof-kind metal sculptures and assemblage pieces from materials he finds in the desert. These are usually already weathered giving him an interesting creative palette to work with. He enjoys giving a new life to these recycled materials. His art is governed by imagination, innovation and an individual style. Eric is also a woodworker and a painter. Make sure to drop by his studio while you’re on the tour. When you do commission a piece of art, remember it takes time. You and the artist will probably meet more than once to establish basic design, size and price. Be prepared to compensate the artist for their time, as well as their creation. Having a one-of-a-kind piece of art in your life is a wonderful experience. -- BY TEDDY TAPSCOTT

The Morongo Basin is home to an incredibly diverse array of artists using numerous mediums to express their unique styles. Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours is proud to showcase the diversity of such a special community, and to share the many ways of making art with the public.

While most are familiar with mediums such as painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics – there is a whole lot more. For instance, sculpture is approached from many different angles. Metal work is a medium that sometimes requires labor-intensive techniques such as welding, repousse, and chasing, commonly using copper, bronze, or steel sheet. These processes may result in polished, table-top sculptures, or outdoor towering works that age nicely in the sun. Woodwork requires precise carving techniques such as chip and relief carving, whittling, and detailing. The selection and quality of wood to be used is of utmost importance. Assemblage is a form of 3-D art made up of various objects - often found materials - that are attached to a flat surface. 2-D art forms include eclectic mediums such as fiber art, using natural or synthetic flat materials like linen, yarn or plastic/acrylic, incorporating techniques such as weaving, macramÊ, and flocking. Encaustic painting involves adding colored pigments to hot beeswax, which is then applied to a surface such as masonite or canvas. Digital art is a contemporary art form that uses digital technology to produce 2-D artwork that can be computer generated, drawn with graphics software, or employing scanned photography. With so many different art forms on display, each studio will have something different to offer. Whether stylistically, conceptually, through popular or lesser known mediums, your visit is sure to provide a rewarding art experience. -- BY ZARA KAND
