Three years ago in 2008, Beyond the Pride Exhibition was just a dream, an idea amongst friends.

A year later in 2009, that dream became a reality.

Today, Living Traditions Productions is honored to welcome friends, family, and esteemed guests to Beyond the Pride Exhibition II. The road to BPXII has been long and weary, but the participating teams, performance groups, and the planning committee itself have all worked hard to showcase talent, creativity, and above all else, the beauty and richness of the Asian culture. We would like to thank our partner VSAUCI, our sponsors, honored guest speaker Robin Shou, participating teams, performance groups, and all others for their never-ending support and passion.

To all those in the audience, thank you for your interest and support for BPXII and the preservation and promotion of the Asian culture. From all of us here at LTP, thank you all for choosing to take part in this wonderful journey and celebration with us.

Yau Kung Moon Lion Dance

Yau Kung Moon originated in the Tang Dynasty (800 AD) by Ding Yang, a monk of the Shaolin Temple. In the 1960s, Grandmaster Wong Cheung and Wan Tak Kee immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong to establish YKM and brought the fame of YKM Kung Fu and lion dancing to the US shores. Grandmaster Wong created 2 disciples in master Lok Sang Lee & Michael Lau, who in turn appointed sifu Susan Yee and Richard Ow to help grow the YKM Association.

When was your team started?

San Francisco Yau Kung Moon was started in 1963

by Great Grandmaster Wong Cheung, Grandmaster Bill Lee, Derrick Lee, and Michael Lau. How do you define the team's dance style?

Traditional southern lion dance with the acrobats and jumping of northern lion dancing. It is a also of fusion of traditional and modern lion dancing.

It maintains the classic main characteristics of the southern liondance and incorporates the everchanging stunts and acrobats of the modern style lion dance.

What is the story behind your team's name?

Yau Kung Moon is a shaolin kung fu system dating back to Tang Dynasty (618-907AD).

The name translates to "The Style of Flexible Power." The basic principle is to be flexible and able to adapt for any situation.

Do you have any special team traditions?

There is a standard tradition where we pay our respects to the school ancestors before any performance or competition.

Legendary Lion Dance Association We are a non-profit organization based in San Diego, CA. We been around since 2000, and are still a young and growing Team. We teach Martial Arts as well as lion dance, and stress the importance of being a family and trusting one another.

A person must have a strong internal if he or she wishes to grow into a successful person.

When was your team started?

Our team started back in 1998.

How do you define the team's dance style?

Our style is a mix between Hoksan, Futsan, and our own combinations we added to make our own style.

Do you have any special team traditions?

Our tradition is to get together, go out, and participate in the annual Midnight Show here in San Diego, on the start of Chinese New Year.

What is the story behind your team's name?

The Lion Dance tradition is a Legacy that dated back more than 2000 years ago, we decided to name ourselves that because of our love and dedication to this art form.

What is an interesting or funny fact about your team?

Most of our team started out lion dancing with a box of noodles, and a towel, or a laundry basket.

Rising Phoenix Lion Dance Freestyle Generation Lion Dance Association was established on September 8, 2003 by a small group of friends who had passion for lion dancing. With hard work to earn money along with courteous donations from parents and store owners, we have now become Rising Phoenix Lion Dance Association; we have grown from a 9-man team into a 25+ man team. We consist of High School and Middle School students that have a passion for lion dancing.

We are all ghetto. We are not the type of people that you would think to lion dance within the community and do charity performances. We just look like a bunch of hoodlums with a good heart.

The Immortals Lion Dance In the early 1960s, Jeff Chan informally established the "Chinese Lion Dancers of Los Angeles." He was the first person to start his own group not tied to a family association or Gung Fu school. In 1978, the group adopted the name "Immortals" based on the Chinese folklore of the 'Eight Immortals'. Today, the Immortals continue the traditions established by the elder members to promote awareness of the Chinese culture through their performances.

We had the idea that we will start this team with the concept of helping those in need. We wanted to express that idea within our name, which is why we had decided to call ourselves Kim Giam Ho (Golden Guardians).

Teng Fei Lion Dance

Oakland When was your team started? 2006

Rising Dragon Cultural Center’s Teng Fei Lion Dance Troupe was established in 2006. To expand the culture and history of lion dance, the founders, Bryant Yu and Darren and his fellow lion dance enthusiasts teach lion dance to dedicated and capable children (ages 6 and up). The group’s main emphasis is dedication, enthusiasm and enjoyment of lion dance.

How do you define the team's dance style? Contemporary What is the story behind your team's name? Some of us used to work at a restaurant and we asked all of our co-workers to think of a strong lion dance team name. We didn't leave until they thought of one we liked.

They thought of "Teng Fei" which derives from our passion to accelerate our performances to reach new heights.

Do you have any special team traditions? Having a rewarding meal after each performance. During our meal, we also like to point out all of our bloopers and highlights.

What is an interesting or funny fact about your team? We always take forever to decide where to eat after each performance!

Gi贸 Nam Mua Lan (Southern Wind Lion Dance) Located in Southern California, Gi贸 Nam Mua Lan (Southern Wind Lion Dance) was founded in Fall 2004 originally as a fund raising group for the Vietnamese Student Association of the University of California, Irvine and performs throughout the Orange County area. Since then the team has developed new goals but we still dance for the love and fun of the art. We hope to create strong bonds, not only among our teammates, but with other lion dancing groups across the OC. Gathering our influence from the Four Winds, we have come to form our own style of Lion Dancing.

Irvine How do you define the team's dance style? We like to see ourselves as a hybrid between modern styles intermixed with some traditional forms, with an emphasis on strong martial arts stances. We believe that alongside the popularity of the modern style of lion dance, we must still maintain and practice the traditional roots of it all.

What is the story behind your team's name? Gio Nam translates to "Southern Wind" in Vietnamese. As one of our founders puts it: "The South wind represents our Asian heritage, and like the wind, it has traveled a great distance from Asia to America".

Do you have any special team traditions?

We never EVER dance under a lion unless he/she has been properly blessed. The process of blessing a lion represents the lion's "awakening" and rise to benevolence.

What is an interesting or funny fact about your team? Out of respect, whenever the team goes out to eat, we must all patiently wait until everyone is present and has been served before we can "moi!" (dig in). If someone is away from the table or does not yet have a plate of food in front of them, the rest of the team drools in agony!

South Coast Martial Arts South Coast Martial Arts school was founded in 1993 on the principles of teaching excellence and developing positive role models, under rich traditions from a variety of different martial arts.

We have over 20 Instructors and personal trainers specializing in different areas of fitness and martial arts. South Coast Martial Arts is also home to South Coast Kickboxing, Old Dog Boxing Joe Moreira's Jiu-jitsu of Brazil, South Coast Wushu Training Center, Kungfu Heroes & Team Tupua.

Wushu USA National Wushu Training Center is dedicated to bringing out the best in each and every one of our students through training in Wushu, leadership, respect, and diligence. No matter how big, small, young, or old, NWTC will bring out the champion in you!

Jodaiko Jodaiko is a Collegiate Taiko group based on the main campus of the University of California, Irvine. Now in its 19th year since inception, Jodaiko brings the Japanese art of Taiko to UCI and the rest of Southern California. The word "Jodaiko" means "passionate drumming" in Japanese and Jodaiko could not have been described better.

Yau Kung Moon Drum and Dragon Team YKM strongly focuses on martial arts and preserving other traditions such as dragon dancing. The YKM drum team and dragon are honoring us with their presence and we thank you them for supporting us.
