COMMUNITY SERVICES On 18th October 2008, we all witnessed an amazing performance by two young charming boys Ali Dhaif and Mohamed Daif at our regular weekly meeting. In the timer’s report to the general evaluator when we heard that they took 16 minutes, we could not believe it because we all were CC Isaac Mathew mesmerized by their mini debate on the benefits of being a toastmaster and we did not realize that it took so long. These MTM President two brothers could do that magic as they just finished a Youth Leadership Programme conducted by ALBA Toastmasters. That is the type of contribution we toastmasters could give to the society! When we think about toastmasters, the first thing that comes to our mind is developing our communication skills, and then may be leadership skills. However, once we develop these skills, we could do much greater things beyond the club circle – that is Community Services. The other day, Tony Buzan, the mind-mapping guru was in Bahrain on a one-day seminar. Participant’s fee was BD. 500. The beauty of Toastmasters is that they can impart training to people very effectively over a longer period at practically no cost to the participants, as we are a non-profit organization. We could conduct Youth Leadership Programme spread over eight weekly schedules where young people aged twelve to eighteen are trained to overcome their fear of public speaking apart from inculcating leadership skills as they are made to play various roles as leaders and performers. They become better listeners, more confident and it helps them shed off their inhibitions in their growing age. This helps them face job interviews with confidence and they become much more successful in their career since they have an edge over their colleagues. Speech craft is another service we could offer to the community. Speech craft is the YLP equivalent for adults and it helps the participants to interact better with their customers and negotiate more effectively the business dealings, which sums up to higher growth and prosperity of the company. The type of community services we could do is endless. We could be active in various charity services with our leadership and communication skills. Toastmasters are able to organize activities, conduct meetings and speak in public as their organization’s representative. So, fellow toastmasters, let us all go out more and more to the society we live in to spread the benefit we reaped from our club and make our cause much more noble than just confining our activities mostly to the weekly meetings.

Divali Abhinandan ! Divali, the festival of light has been celebrated all over the world on the 28th of October this year. Renown for the lighting of “deeyas”, these cute little clay lamps filled with oil, Divali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, the victory of good over evil. And with it comes wealth, prosperity, and good luck in the coming year. Divali is also renown for the sound of fire crackers, lighting up the earth and the sky. It is indeed one of those occasions which professes joy and jubilation for the young and the old, men and women, for one and all. Divali also symbolizes renewal, whereby major house cleaning, new clothes, and the renewal of account books, promotes a better and healthier living and working environment in all its perspectives. Divali is also a moment of sharing : Gifts, sweets, and good wishes are exchanged not only with friends, neighbors and relatives, but also with the poor and needy, thus promoting charity, humility, community, and better human relationships. As light dispels darkness, so should knowledge dispel ignorance. Divali symbolizes lighting the lamp of knowledge within us, to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of our being and bring those thoughts in our day-to-day life. Let us all, Toastmasters and friends, together celebrate Divali and prosper as one happy family. With best wishes for a Divali filled with joy, And a New Year blessed with prosperity.

JUST A MINUTE … MR TABLE TOPICS MASTER ! ( A 59-SECOND MESSAGE ) We pay tribute to Dr. R. C. Smedley as a Founder but we tend to overlook his ingenuity to introduce many unique educational programmes which made the Toastmasters movement so popular that the small plant grown to a huge tree.

Table Topics session was one of the ideas to : Overcome fear of public speaking Give chance to new members to start facing the audience Give opportunity to those who have no speaking assignments Make the programme interesting & enjoyable ( based on the philosophy : “we learn best in the moments of enjoyment”) Sometimes we deviate. To make this session most successful the Topicsmaster should keep in mind that the audience are not impressed by philosophical topics or difficult proverbs or specialized topics. Maybe one can speak better on Malthusian Theory of Population but if asked to comment on a quote from Charles Dickens Tales of Two Cities or a quote from Shakespeare maybe he or she has not read them. Why not ask a doctor matters related to healthcare ? This can benefit both the commentator and the audience because he might reveal useful information. So is the case of Engineers, Scientists, Economists. But please do not take this as a “golden rule” unless you know the background of the Toastmaster concerned. We should try openended topics or controversial topics with a wider choice of speaking for or against the topic but no SPR ( sex, religion or politics ) please. One Golden rule : Never involve a guest without his or her prior consent. For time control if the speaker is not stopping : Start clapping, give a round of applause and thank him for excellent comments. Mr Table Topics Master, if you want to be a successful Topics Master, bring simple, easy and enjoyable topics.

DTM Mohammed Iqbal Butt Undeniably the most appreciated member of our club, DTM Mohammed is not only our senior-most member, but also represents this “golden touch of wisdom” which makes Manama Toastmasters so special.

Toastmasters International—Competent Leadership Manual ( Page 11 ) Some meeting roles fulfill the requirements for several different projects. For example: project 1, 2, 3 and 8 give you the option to serve as an evaluator for a prepared speech. Serving once as an evaluator meets the requirements for only one project, not for all four. To receive credit for all four projects, you are required to serve as an evaluator four different times.

Teacher’s note on report card : “Sally is a smart little girl, but she has one fault. She talks too much in school. I have an idea I am going to try, which I think may break her of the habit." Father’s remarks signed on the returned card : “ Please let me know if your idea works on Sally because I would like to try it out on her mother."

Article by ACB,CL Sheel Pai Member since 1999, Past President of the Club, successful Youth Leadership Programmes, and … our first ACB for this term ! our Toastmaster Sheela is indeed a key asset of our Club. I have been on the club’s debate panel on many occasions, won some, lost some but somehow I was never offered the plum role of a ‘Debate Moderator’. That role was always reserved for the so called ‘senior’ members of our club. So, when the VP Education Abdulrahman Al Awadi called and asked if I would accept the role of debate moderator for 25th October ’08, my answer was ‘Yes, Yes, Yes’. Hearing my enthusiasm, I think he was pleasantly surprised and as expected from any VP Ed would do in such a situation, he continued. ‘You seem very excited so, maybe you could also help find some topics for the debate, set up the teams, etc.’ I accepted pronto! Within 2 days I sent our VP Education 10 really interesting topics (or so I thought). I was surprised that he vetoed them all and came up with a brilliant topic himself. What also surprised me was that it was the tail end of one of my topics while the head was ingeniously crafted by him. I was impressed !! Anyway, the debate was a huge success with 30 members in attendance (the highest this season) and many guests. The success to a good debate is dependent on 5 simple rules (I am no pro but this is my humble observation):

1. Selection of a good topic (thank you Abdulrahman). It should be neither controversial nor political and afford plenty of scope for debating.

2. Selection of an enthusiastic debate panel: A panel willing to let go of their inhibitions, pack their talk with punch and persuasion, bring evidence to support their view and proper teamwork.

3. Follow the rules: A debate has a certain set of rules which everybody must follow (no personal attacks, no offensive language, no finger pointing or unacceptable body language)

4. Humour: However serious the topic and the heat it may generate, a bit of humour from the moderator, debate panel & chief judge too always helps to set the mood. Planning, Preparation & Passion (the 3 P’s): Starting with the VP Education, the moderator, the debate panel, the judges, timers, tally counters and a well tuned audience, the 3 P’s can either make or break a good debate (or any event). Finally, I believe a fire in the belly of the panel, yes, it’s what we saw that night emanating from Afaf, Joel and their respective teams makes for a truly interesting show. Hey, if you beg to differ on any or all of the above, I am ready for a debate anytime! Bring it on!

If you see some words written here, then this is because a very small incident happened in the past that changed the course of life… A chain of events happened that led me deciding to send this article for Horizon....Change one thing…..Change everything…! I believe that below two interesting concepts are the sources for everything else in our universe: Theory #1: EVERYTHING is energy (according to relativity theory for Einstein),,, Lights, objects, your physical movements even your emotions.. Love, hatred, joy, sadness ,,,,,, now pause and think about that carefully! Theory #2: The butterfly effect – It literally says: A butterfly’s wings can create tiny changes in the atmosphere in Africa, which can alter ultimately a path of a tornado in Brazil!

Hussein joined Manama Toastmasters in 2006. His contagious energy, enthusiasm and intellect personifies the younger generation of our Club.

Why we need to know all that? Recent figures show that one in four women and one in six men will suffer from some form of depression in their lives. Don’t we all need the positive energy? We all broadcast energies, I don’t want to talk about the physical remedies for boosting your energy, that is the difficult way out.. The easy way out is: Put so much positive energy when you talk and act…. This was always my father’s advise – “Son, try to hang with the people who have high positive attitudes”…(language they use, actions they make and thoughts that they hold to) Can you remember a time when our meeting finished, and you were feeling down??? Why? Yes, it because the way Toastmasters designed, right from welcoming everyone, introducing guests, presidential address and all the way to general evaluation..A process full of positive encouragements, healthy discussions and plethora of situations where each one grasp the slightest opportunity to boost everyone’s energy…

Can you Imagine Martin Luther King and his historical speech with no energy – “I have a dream..”? Would have it been with the same effects? I doubt… If you want to make someone smile – Energy! If you want to make someone motivated – Energy! If you want inspiration,, ENERGY… Such minor changes, such huge consequences…and remember those who zap your energy, they are not for you. I believe the true chemistry is in the way you say “I care for you..” My warmest energetic regards,

LEADERS ARE THE CURRENT CHALLENGE AND THE FUTURE SUCCESS In life, I learned that Leadership is a process of getting things done by a group of people… that can be achieved only by the leader who believes in his team, and by believing that the team work is the key to success. It is only then; the leaders are getting things done by working through people. It is comparable to team players like-- football players, Scouts, and ordinary citizens. They all have used the process of leadership to reach certain goals.

Always remember, being a leader is an adventure because you can never be sure whether you will reach your goal. Surely there will downs; however leaders have to try again and again, using other methods. It is a trial and error thing but it still boils down to the same process--- the process of good leadership. Leadership means responsibility. It is an adventure and often linked to fun, but it also means responsibility. So don't think your job as a leader will be just an honor. It's more than that. It means that the others expect you to take the responsibility of getting the job done. If you lead, they will do the job. If you don't, they may expect you to do the job all by yourself. That is why it's important that you begin right to learn what leadership is all about.

In this section, we will consider several common statements about the people who have rendered their service as a leader. We are not a leader because we are wearing the leader's hat (positions). But we are a leader only when we are getting things done through our teams and working as one team. The best leadership points that really changed my life are as follows: •

Successful leaders operate with a vision of where they're going, and they use this vision to inspire their people and their organization. This clear vision and focused direction allows leaders to align and direct the energy and resources of the organization to achieve desired results. Leaders must have the capacity to motivate and inspire, to bring out the best in people, even in hard times. An effective leader conveys the attitude that everyone plays a critical role in the success regardless of what official job title the leader have. Leaders must know how to process large quantities of conflicting information and be able to get ahead of the competition by defining what must be done. The leader needs to cultivate firm-minded co-teams with the wisdom and courage to say “no”. The core competency of leadership is character. As Warren Bennis said in his classic book On Becoming a Leader: "Get a leader with only drive but not competency and integrity, and you get a demagogue. Get someone with competence but absent integrity and drive, and you get a technocrat. Get seduced by someone who has ambition and competence but lacks integrity, and you get a destructive achiever." Leaders must have the ability to make quick decisions with imperfect data. They need to objectively and realistically analyze a problem or situation, which is an important first step in making sound decisions. It has been said many times but it bears repeating: It is not enough for a leader to do things right; a leader must do the right thing. Leaders must have the ability to select the right people, not clones of themselves but people who can make up for their deficiencies. Remember, one of the most important roles of leaders is to generate more leadership within the organization. Effective leaders seek out, initiate, support, and manage needed change; they are "change champions." They see opportunities for improvement and motivate their staff to seek and implement productive changes.

Or that they plunge ahead with the last good idea that pops into their heads. To trust a leader, followers have to know what to expect. So sometimes the leader has to put off a grand idea until he or she has had a chance to convince his/her own allies. In business, the effectiveness of a decision is the quality of the decision multiplied by the acceptance. • Leaders are able to hear tough unpopular news, absorb it calmly, and immediately shift to creative discussions and solutions. After all, every organization needs a leader who at some point can say to the world: "The buck stops here." When we focus in building our skills we will get the most beautiful thing in life which is Quality and along with that we will have the following: • Leadership qualities and employee motivation. • Preparing yourself for leadership journey which is one of the best things in life. • Influences in developing leadership qualities. • The chance to build more leadership opportunities. • Getting the knowledge of goal setting. • Gain attitude’s skills. • Realize your new lifestyle from the benefits of leadership skills. • Taking a series of action and becoming a key leadership skill advisor. • Ability to maintain your leadership skills. • Learning how to use our time through time management • Communicating as a leader. • Becoming a decisions maker. • Becoming Team, Friends and employee motivator. • Learning the right way on how to continued leadership growth. •

M A N A M A T OA S T M A S T E R S C L U B Manama Toastmasters Club established in 1964, is the oldest in the Middle East. Our club is registered under the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (reg. no. 74/C/C) and is affiliated to Toastmasters International.
