DURING COVID-19
The Hurley Foundation’s Volunteer Corps was called on to staff a few “mission critical” volunteer service areas through the pandemic. Although most volunteers were asked to stay home and quarantine in their homes in March, some volunteers maintained their service into the Spring. Ismael Guerra, high school senior, was the main volunteer in the Surgical Lounge during this time. Working an average of 4-5 days a week, Ismael maintained the opening and closing of
the Lounge to ensure that the small group of visitors had the comfort of knowing how their loved ones progressed through critical surgeries. He quickly became a treasured team member to his counterparts in pre- and post-operative care. Chaplains provided another critical service. They conducted spiritual care calls for Hurley Departments via phone. The chaplain’s office was staffed every day and multiple calls were made to provide a level of comfort and care during a time where emotions were high and many were fearful. The Volunteer Corps remains a vital part of Hurley’s operations, despite an unusual year.
