Welcome to Ankeny! History

Welcome to Ankeny

At Hunziker & Associates, REALTORS®, we are proud to introduce you to Ankeny, Iowa. We have created this guide with you in mind, drawing from the questions and experiences of many families we have relocated in the past. Please enjoy this guide and contact our Relocation Department or your Hunziker agent with anything you need to make Ankeny home. Location & Geography Ankeny is located in the center of Iowa in the center of the United States, in a region called the Heartland. Iowa’s native environment is tall grass prairie and flat or rolling hills. Rich soil and adequate rainfall provide Iowa with some of the most productive farmland in the world.

Ankeny was founded in 1874 and named after its founder, John Fletcher Ankeny. John and his wife, Sarah, purchased 80 acres and laid out plans for the town together. They built the first post office, store and boarding house on SW 3rd Street, which became the business district. The area is now referred to as Up Town. When Ankeny was officially incorporated in 1903 it was 1 square mile with a population of 445. The town did not change much until WWII, when the government built a large ammunition factory outside of town. After the war, the plant was sold to John Deere, and farm equipment painted that famous green is still manufactured there today. Ankeny began growing very rapidly after the war. From 1940 to 1970 the population jumped from 779 to 9,151. Ankeny has continued to grow steadily. The 2000 census reported 27,117 residents, and in 2008 the population was estimated at 42,287. Living in Iowa Iowans prize their safe communities, friendly neighbors, high-quality schools, low cost of living, clean air, easy commutes, and great selection of recreational and cultural activities. Although often thought of as a rural state, Iowa also has vibrant metropolitan areas. Over 60% of Iowans live in urban areas. The high quality of life often draws those who once left the state to return to raise their families or enjoy their retirement. And many of our past clients who were newcomers to the state have been delighted with Iowa’s many benefits. Iowa is a great place to call home.

Community Overview Community Overview

Ankeny is a progressive, growing community with the amenities of a large metropolitan area and the pleasant atmosphere of a small Midwestern town. It is known for top ranked schools, clean and safe neighborhoods and vibrant shopping, dining and recreational opportunities. Ankeny Ankeny is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa. Located just north of Iowa’s capitol city Des Moines, there is almost always new construction taking place in Ankeny. Construction ranges from new schools and public buildings to retail stores, restaurants and homes. Ankeny residents enjoy easy access to large retail stores and popular restaurant franchises as well as smaller locally owned boutique shops. Almost any product or service regularly desired is available in Ankeny, but an even wider range of choices are available in Des Moines, which is just minutes away by interstate. Many Ankeny residents commute to work in downtown Des Moines or in other parts of the Metro. The Des Moines area is a strong employment center; Forbes declared it the #1 Best Place for Business & Careers in the nation in 2010. Recreational opportunities are plentiful in the area, and it is easy to become involved in community activities through city recreational programs, churches or civic organizations. Community Overview

Ankeny Weather: What to Expect Iowa has a full range of seasons. Summers are warm and humid, producing a lush green landscape. Many of our past clients who were new to the Midwest were amazed at how green and beautiful the countryside is in the summer. Winters are cold enough to produce a blanket of sparkling white snow for several weeks each winter. Spring and fall are mild and picturesque, but temperatures can vary by 50 degrees within a week when the seasons are changing. All seasons have precipitation. Average yearround precipitation is about 32 inches, which is great for gardening and our famously productive Iowa farms! Severe weather typically includes

blizzards, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. Snow can cause traffic to slow during storms, but is usually cleared quickly. Crews also apply salt to minimize icy conditions on the roadways. It is not uncommon for school to be cancelled due to snow a few times each year. Tornados often sound scary to people who have never lived in an area where they form, but the actual threat from storms is often much lower than people first believe. The most common time for tornado warnings is in spring and summer, often in the late afternoon or early evening, though they can occur at other times. Since most Iowa homes have basements and communities have sirens to give residents advanced warning of tornados, loss of life or property damage is Average Monthly Temperatures in Ankeny (Measured in Fahrenheit) rare (although you may see damage in the news every year, tornados have only affected a small percentage of Iowans).
