A Message from Our CEO: A Tradition of Travel

WE’RE ALWAYS MINDFUL of the past here at Xanterra Travel Collection, proud of our long legacy and 140-year history with the national parks. But as we’ve evolved into a worldwide company, our vision of the future is just as important as that link to the past. And that vision is offering extraordinary travel experiences in incredible destinations across the globe.

We’re excited to bring you to some of those destinations in this 2019 issue of Explore magazine. Visit the gorgeous green mountains of New Zealand or the vast plains of South Africa. Take your pick of five epic hikes with the payoff of jaw-dropping views. Or enjoy the singular tastes of Spain on a gourmet food tour of the region.

We also think about global travel possibilities within our growing portfolio and how these unique experiences create lasting memories. So in this issue we’ve included some of our in-house expertise about planning those special occasion celebrations. Whether it’s a wedding, a milestone birthday, or some other occasion, nothing is better than gathering the generations in a beautiful location to share an unforgettable experience.

Of course, we are always mindful of leaving the destinations we visit the same way we found them. “Our Softer Footprint” is Xanterra’s

commitment to sustainability, and our pledge to help preserve the future of the planet and to care for its most beautiful places.

Finally in this issue, don’t miss our $100 million renovation of The Oasis at Death Valley. Bask in the storied history of this desert landmark and see how this luxurious resort has evolved.

The globe-spanning range of topics and destinations you’ll find inside is deliberate; we’ve learned over the years that our guests are delightfully well-traveled and diverse in their exploits. Travelers who enjoy European bicycling adventures or trekking through Iceland also enjoy the majesty of Grand Canyon National Park. Guests who embark on a Halong Bay cruise also delight in a train trip on the historic Alaskan rail lines.

As you take in the variety of places and experiences in this issue, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating the diversity of the Xanterra Travel Collection as well. We look forward to helping you discover more Beautiful Places on Earth® in 2019.

EARTH MATTERS

Sustainability is more than a buzzword at Xanterra. It’s the way we do business.

As the stewards of some of the most Beautiful Places on Earth®, it is integral to Xanterra Travel Collection’s mission to minimize our environmental impact. Utilizing unique programs to foster sustainability and initiatives to reduce our footprint, we’re always mindful of the finite natural resources and our obligation to conservation. Below are a few of the initiatives we are committed to. See more at Xanterra.com/Explore.

1 Water

With programs in nine parks, Xanterra reduced the absolute consumption of water throughout its portfolio by 2 percent in 2017, saving 5.1 million gallons from the previous year.

2 Compost In 2016, Glacier National Park converted 175,540 pounds of kitchen food waste into compost, more than doubling its first year’s diversion of 72,000 pounds.

3 Bottles-toBenches

Yellowstone National Park partnered with GeoMATRIX to turn the park’s discarded glass bottles and jars into six benches and 11 picnic tables for its Canyon Village area.

4 Solar The Oasis at Death Valley upgraded its solar infrastructure to supply 2 megawatts of power to the resort.

5 Fueled by the Fryer

Grand Canyon Railway’s two historic steam engines run on recycled waste vegetable oil (WVO).

Xanterra’s environmental management system, “Our Softer Footprint,” influences every decision we make in delivering our guests awardwinning hospitality. We believe increasing the sustainability of natural resources is not just good business — it’s the right thing to do.

Xanterra is a proud member of the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers program.

PICTURE PERFECT

Follow these pro tips to bring home your best photographs from any national park visit.

The scenery at any of our national parks will inspire the Ansel Adams in all of us. But capturing those shots — especially when including your traveling companions — can be tricky. “Framing and lighting are the key elements of taking great photographs,” says Irene Abdou of Irene Abdou Photography. A professional photographer in the Washington, D.C., area who likes to shoot families in outdoor settings, Abdou has some advice for shutterbugs to capture those album-worthy images.

Take Advantage of the Day’s Best Light

“In general, the best time to photograph in an open area is 1.5 hours before sunset and about 30 minutes after sunrise,” says Abdou. Called the “golden hour” by photographers, it’s when the sun is low in the sky and the light is indirect and soft, which is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun. Plan to be in some of the park’s most scenic areas at those times, and get there early enough so you don’t miss that magic moment.

Make Sure the Light Is Even

“You don’t want one person standing in the sun and one person standing in the shade. For a group photo, the light should be the same,” says Abdou. Move your subjects if necessary.

Use the Right Positioning for Scenic Shots

How to capture the classic photograph of your family in front of the Grand Canyon or another spectacular and mammoth park setting?

Position yourself and the kids carefully. To include the most scenery, don’t take that iconic shot of the Grand Canyon with your kids against the rim wall. “If you want a wide expanse of landscape in the background, you as the photographer and your family should be at a distance from the background. Position the people close to the camera. That way you get the scenery, but the people aren’t small.”

Focus on the Correct Spot for Action Shots

To shoot an image of something moving toward you

— a child on horseback, for example — focus on an area just in front of the moving object. “If the horse is walking toward you and you focus on the child, when you take the shot, the child is likely to be out of focus because the horse is moving,” says Abdou. “Focus on a point in front of the horse; then wait for the child to arrive there before you shoot.”

Look for Interesting Perspectives

Get away from the predictable group lineup by changing the perspective. “Get down low or go up high to shoot your group, and also take photographs of activities.” Snap your kids putting on life jackets, readying rods for fishing, or entering a hiking trail. This eliminates the standard police-lineup look of family photographs.

From Our Table to Yours

Celebrate the rich culture and culinary heritage of two exceptional resorts in this one-of-a-kind collector’s set.

The Broadmoor and Sea Island have joined forces to create a new two-book box set. “The Broadmoor: Spirit of the West” and “Sea Island: Soul of the South,” both by Sarah Anschutz Hunt, capture the unique flavor and lifestyle that make each resort legendary.

Featuring the favorite recipes and timeless traditions that distinguish these great American resorts, the two books are packaged together in an attractive slipcase that represents the joining of these iconic brands. For past guests, it’s a treasured keepsake that reminds them of memories made in these special places. And for those who haven’t yet visited, it’s a small taste of what’s in store.

STEP RIGHT UP

Preparing for that active trip is easier than you think.

Trekking through Iceland or biking through the hills of Tuscany can seem daunting when imagined from a cozy seat on the couch. But in truth, preparing for an active vacation is easier than you think. “Our tours are geared for people in good physical shape, and most people are already ready,” says Tricia Dowhan, product director for Country Walkers. Dowhan has helped travelers with active getaways for 22 years, and she shares some of her best tips.

GO FOR A WALK .

Simply spend a little more time being active than usual, says Dowhan. “Incorporate some physical or aerobic activity into your routine every day.” Then, once you’re doing that consistently, add an incline. “If you have hills to walk, great. Otherwise just take the stairs instead of the elevator or try doing the StairMaster at the gym.” The better prepared you are, the more relaxed you’ll feel on the trip, she says.

BREAK IN THOSE BOOTS.

Low-profile walking boots or hiking shoes are recommended for Country Walkers itineraries. Give yourself six weeks with new shoes before your trip. “The last thing you want on the trip is blisters,” says Dowhan. For those embarking on a bike tour, expect four hours a day in the saddle. Gradually increase your training until you’re prepared to cycle 15-35 miles daily.

PACK LIGHT

Aim for carry-on luggage, suggests Dowhan. Although the itineraries for Country Walkers and VBT include porters, most travelers will have to manage their own luggage at the beginning and end of their tour. Utilize hotel laundry and save yourself the hassle of managing heavy bags. “I generally recommend laying out all of your gear and then taking out one-third of it.”

TAKE IT EASY.

Once on the trip, don’t be afraid to take a day off, advises Dowhan. The goal is to return with your batteries recharged, so if the hotel spa looks enticing, then take a day and enjoy it. Or maybe just spend the day poolside with a book. “I think especially for firsttime travelers with us, I encourage people to take some time off and don’t ever feel bad about it. It’s your vacation, after all.”

RIDE THE RAILS

The luxury of train travel: You recline in a spacious seat and watch cinema-worthy scenery roll by your window, without a care in the world. Much more than transportation, a train vacation will give you a new perspective on the American West. Here are three classic journeys you shouldn’t miss.

Grand Canyon Railway

Special occasions call for special transportation. And for an extraordinary visit to the Grand Canyon, arrive aboard the oneof-a-kind Grand Canyon Railway. On the 65-mile, two-and a-half hour journey between the retrocool town of Williams, Arizona, and Grand Canyon National Park, the train’s commanding presence, stylish interior, and superb service are essential parts of the railway experience. These unique historic railway

cars have been fully refurbished to their original authenticity.

You and your guests start the day with old-West entertainment and over the next few hours the landscape will captivate as you scale the massive Colorado Plateau and witness the constantly unfolding drama of the American Southwest. This uniquely American journey is destined to create unforgettable memories.

For a group celebration or milestone occasion, plan ahead to reserve a private car — or even the entire train — for the journey. Plan ahead at least six months for private reservations.

MILLION-DOLLAR VIEWS WITH EpicHikes

THESE TRAILS REVEAL STUNNING GLACIERS, ANCIENT RUINS, GEYSER BASINS, AND PLUNGING CANYONS.

There’s nothing like heading out on an open trail in search of a memorable view. No matter the challenge, the reward can be an Instagram-worthy moment of a lifetime. Here are five trails — from an easy glacier walk to a strenuous uphill climb — where the payoff is a view to remember. So lace up your boots and take a hike.

Oahu,Hawaii

Diamond Head Trail

As iconic as its glittering namesake, Oahu’s Diamond Head Trail offers a steep but thrilling 0.8-mile climb to the 760-foot summit of the island’s volcanic landmark. The walk up the broad, saucer-shaped crater, which gains 560 feet from the crater floor, takes about 30-40 minutes one way and offers a glimpse into the geological and military history of the Diamond Head volcano. The trail was built in 1908 as part of Oahu’s coastal defense system. A dirt switchback path takes you quickly to the first lookout offering sublime ocean views. From there you ascend the first set of 74 stairs up to a dimly lit 225-foot-long tunnel and the bigger challenge of 99 steps. At the summit you’ll arrive at bunkers and yet more stairs leading to the breathtaking — literally and figuratively — viewing platform, where a huge 1917 lighthouse reminds you of the navigational importance of this spot.

THE PAYOFF Get your camera ready for showstopping 360-degree views from the top: sprawling Honolulu, the lush Koolau Mountains, the Koko Head Crater, and the Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon, which may even include passing humpback whales in winter.

Snaefellsjökull Glacier Hike

One of the best glacier hikes in the world, the walk to the Snaefellsjökull (sneye-fells-yokle) Glacier takes you on a safe and easy journey through stunning scenery to explore a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges, and deep crevasses. Snaefell Mountain, one of the most picturesque in Iceland, is a volcano rising up to 4,800 feet in the middle of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and is visible from more than 62 miles away. But its real fame derives from Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, in which the book’s heroes begin their adventures by entering one of the volcano’s lava tubes.

Grand Canyon

South Kaibab Trail

The best way to grasp the natural architecture and sheer scale of one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World is by hiking one of its most dramatic trails. At Grand Canyon National Park, the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge, located on the canyon’s South Rim, takes you from a 7,000-foot-high perch and descends toward the Colorado River, dramatically following a ridgeline with often-tight switchbacks. The steep dirt trail typically takes about three hours to hike

round-trip, but it reveals panoramic views unmatched on any other trail in the canyon. (Note: The trail lacks shade and water, so be sure to prepare accordingly.)

THE PAYOFF The trail provides an exhilarating sense of exposure as the canyon’s vastness unfolds in awe-inspiring splendor, climaxing with the stunning overlook at Cedar Ridge.

Bunsen Peak Trail

In a park packed with great trails, this one takes you through some of the best sights in Yellowstone. Best done in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is ideal, the hike is fairly short at four miles round-trip but requires some exertion near the summit to climb a series of steep switchbacks. You’ll ascend a total of 1,278 feet, getting outstanding views all the way. On the lower slopes, you’ll find a bird’s-eye view of Golden Gate and Glen Creek canyons, with the Hoodoos and Mount Everts visible in the distance. You’ll pass a stand of dead trees with an otherworldly feel before you reach a large rock formation known as Cathedral Rock at about 1.4 miles. Be sure to snap a shot of Mammoth Hot Springs and

Mount Everts as they pass into view. Then come those challenging switchbacks covered with loose scree until you finally reach the backside of Bunsen and the weather station at the summit.

THE PAYOFF Enjoy a stunning panorama at the top. Views of Swan Lake Flat and the vast open plain of Gardner’s Hole stretch out below, Mammoth Hot Springs is visible to the north, and Electric Peak, the tallest mountain in the area, stands by itself to the west. VIETNAM

EXOTIC & EXTRAORDINARY

Offering an array of striking sights, sounds, and flavors, Vietnam delivers a feast for the senses.

Aland of astonishing natural beauty and cultural complexities, Vietnam intrigues with its modern megacities and centuries-old tribal villages. Travelers are sure to be smitten by its world-class cuisine, exotic markets, fertile rice fields, and lush jungles.

To experience the full richness of this country, make time to take in the natural beauty, complex cuisine, and stunning architecture of Vietnam.

HANOI AND HALONG BAY

Discovering the natural beauty of Vietnam is a time-travelers’ journey. The lush landscapes — including a pristine coastline, rice fields, orchards, and water-coconut palm forests — punctuate centuries of history.

Hanoi offers a fascinating blend of East and West with its Chinese influences and French design. Along the way, explore Hanoi’s vibrant Old Quarter with its tree-lined boulevards and French Colonial architecture. While there, visit the One Pillar Pagoda, one of Vietnam’s most iconic temples; the Temple of Literature; and 36 Streets District in Old Town Hanoi, Vietnam’s oldest city district and a merchant and artisan quarter for more than two millennia.

History buffs will want to tour the Hoa Lo Prison, where American prisoners were held during the Vietnam War, and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

From there, travel to Halong Bay on an overnight cruise, where you can explore by rowboat or kayak and enjoy onboard cooking and tai chi demonstrations. A visit to the imperial capital of Hué offers impressive emperors’ tombs, ancient pagodas, and royal residences. In the historic trading center of Hoi An, learn the secrets of traditional Vietnamese cuisine at a local cooking school after shopping for ingredients at a colorful market.

Finally, don’t miss the beautiful port of Nha Trang, famed for its crystalline waters. Visit its open-air markets and scenic shoreline, and get a glimpse of the fascinating civilization of the Cham people, ancient rulers of Vietnam and Cambodia.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

With its 2,140 miles of coastline on the Indochina Peninsula, pristine bays, and two major delta systems, water naturally plays into the culinary culture of Vietnam.

In the tranquil 16th-century trading town of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you can experience daily life in country villages and open-air markets, meeting local artisans, farmers, and merchants. Or participate in a cooking class at a culinary school, and bring home both new skills and fond memories of this remarkably untouched place. Next experience the tranquil fishing village of Cam Ha on your way to An Bang Beach for an unforgettable lunch of fresh-caught fish and relaxation on the sand. The region hosts a long history of the performing arts, including a magical musical performance of the Thang Long Water Puppets, which date back to the 11th century.

SAIGON/HO CHI MINH CITY

Discover a city that never sleeps. Ho Chi Minh City, commonly known as Saigon, is filled with colonial landmarks, colorful local markets, and of course more of the tempting flavors of the region. Visit architectural icons such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, patterned after the Paris original; the Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel; and the former Presidential Palace. Don’t miss reminders of the Vietnam War, including the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels, built by the Viet Cong. For a glimpse of local life, explore the Mekong Delta’s lush rice paddies and fruit farms via rickshaw, and then relax aboard a sampan boat as you are paddled along tropical canals. Saigon offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t soon forget.

Occasions CELEBRATE

Our guide to designing that very special trip.
TO

From weddings to landmark birthdays, family reunions to retirements, celebration vacations are on the rise. And it’s no wonder. Milestones were made for celebrating, and travel is one of the best ways to do that.

Celebrating a truly special occasion can be the perfect excuse for a big trip. But planning the perfect vacation — even for a small group — can be a daunting task. The good news is that sometimes the celebration itself can inspire travelers to explore a different part of the world or perhaps even splurge on a dream trip. And, wherever your itinerary takes you, the shared experience of travel can strengthen family bonds, celebrate friends in new ways, and reconnect romantic partners.

Simply put, it’s worth the effort. Here are our expert tips for planning and enjoying an occasion to remember.

WHERE TO START

First determine the guest list: Generally speaking, the larger the group, the shorter the trip you’ll be able to plan. With school calendars and vacation days in play, it’s easiest to stick to a week or less for large family events like anniversaries, reunions, or retirement celebrations. (If your group is just you and your sweetheart, coordinating the calendar gets much easier.)

Next, determine your dates, keeping in mind both your own schedules and peak travel windows. For example, summer in Europe is high season, so for a quieter pace opt for traveling in the spring or fall. When considering beach destinations, always research the local hurricane season.

These fairly simple considerations will help you narrow the options. The answers will help you decide between a far-off, exotic destination — easier for a few people to pull off — or a more familiar one that can accommodate your large family reunion closer to home.

Finally, determine your budget, the length of your stay, the kinds of activities you want to experience, and any special needs of your guests. Be aware of booking calendars, and plan ahead 10 to 12 months for overseas travel and three to six months for domestic destinations.

FAMILY MATTERS

There’s nothing like a family reunion or a multigenerational vacation to bring everyone together, build closer bonds, and create memories that will last forever. Weddings are another special occasion worth booking a special trip for. But it can also be challenging to satisfy everyone’s needs, from the youngest to the oldest. Prioritize by location, the number of people in your group, their ages, and the type of vacation that will please all family members. Solicit their input and start your planning at least six months in advance.

A trip on the historic Grand Canyon Railway, one of the country’s great train rides, offers the experience of a lifetime for those age 6 or 96. An exhilarating 65-mile trip from Williams, Arizona, to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, it traverses Arizona’s 5,000-foot-high Colorado Plateau while unfolding a unique view of the American West. You ride in glass-domed historic railway cars with steam engines that have been fully refurbished to their original 1920s grandeur.

Depending on the size of your party, you can reserve the entire train or just a few individual cars. Traveling by train means your group can skip the hassles of parking and instead just sit back and enjoy the fine service and Old West entertainment that comes only with train travel. As you roll through the scenery, a cowboy singer serenades you with classic trail songs. The journey culminates in one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World: the Grand Canyon. Stay at one of its lodges, such as the grand El Tovar Hotel, and take a signature mule ride on the rim.

ROMANTIC RENDEZVOUS & WEDDINGS

A romantic escape is a perfect way for couples to mark an anniversary, renewal of vows, or honeymoon. A celebration of love should be everything you’ve dreamed of — and more — in a place and in a way that cements your relationship. It should be geared to what you and your partner like to do and what brings you joy — whether foodie forays, cultural experiences, outdoor activities, or just relaxing in private.

Hit the high seas on a small luxury sailing ship where privacy and adventure go hand in hand. Here, it’s easy to find a quiet corner to relax, just the two of you. Visit secluded, intimate harbors, often off the beaten path, that offer unique cultural experiences you can discover on your own.

If you prefer a land-based vacation, the historic Oasis at Death Valley, which was recently fully renovated, may just fit the bill. With a luxurious natural setting and fine dining, the 66-room Inn at Death Valley (plus 22 brand-new luxury Casitas) offers

It’s a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, an engagement, or an anniversary.

ACTIVE ADVENTURES

For some landmark celebrations, only a thrilling, bucket-list-fulfilling adventure will do. One holiday no one will soon forget is a South African safari, where you can track the Big Five wild animals on foot and by jeep in Kruger National Park, view whales and penguins, and sample wines in the Cape Winelands. THEN & NOW DEATH VALLEY

The Old West Meets 21st Century Luxury at The Oasis at Death Valley.

REIMAGINING A CLASSIC

Always a standard in luxury, The Oasis at Death Valley has provided guests the ultimate desert experience for more than 90 years.

In 1907, an April Fool’s Day joke sarcastically beckoned travelers to Death Valley, claiming the region “has all the advantages of hell without the inconveniences.”

But when the luxuriously appointed 12-room Furnace Creek Inn opened in 1927, wealthy travelers instantly took to this oasis, now reborn as The Inn at Death Valley. Why bother building a hotel in such an isolated and seemingly inhospitable spot?

The origins of this desert icon encompass the iconography of the Wild West and good oldfashioned American ingenuity.

ORIGINS OF A DESERT ICON

When borax mining by the Pacific Coast Borax Co. began to decline in the early 1900s, the two railroads that depended on the industry needed to find new customers.

So the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad and the Death Valley Railroad turned to tourism for the solution and designed a well-appointed resort they hoped would attract wealthy travelers.

The 12-room Furnace Creek Inn opened its Mission-style doors on February 1, 1927. Built by local Paiute and Shoshone tribe members, who worked on-site making adobe bricks, the building’s construction took only a year. Designed to blend with the landscape, featuring red-tile roofs and walls made of desert stone, The Inn embodied the history of the Old West and evoked

California’s Spanish past. An additional 10 rooms were added in 1928, and with a pool fed by a nearby spring, scores of palm trees, and gorgeous tennis courts, the Furnace Creek Inn felt like an oasis straight from a Hollywood film.

However, the owners soon discovered that luxury travelers preferred the convenience of their personal cars rather than train travel, and the Death Valley Railroad was officially abandoned in 1930.

The original inn design by famed Los Angeles architects Albert C. Martin and Daniel Hull intentionally placed the structure at the mouth of the Furnace Creek Wash. Its red-tile exterior seemingly built into the hillside, Martin and Hull smartly married landscape with luxury in their U-shaped structure.

— 43 — XANTERRA.COM/EXPLORE | #XANTERRATRAVEL

DESERT DREAM

Rather than obscure The Inn’s history, the recent renovations have helped to bring out more of its traditional character. In the lobby, a combination of terra cotta and decorative tile adds to the Spanish atmosphere, while classic American West artwork links The Inn to its frontier past. In the dining room, a beamed ceiling and newly installed dark plank-wood floor, as well as more Western-themed art, create a setting of rustic elegance.

It’s easy to immerse yourself in the ambiance of the Old West in other ways, too: Saddle up for a trail ride to spot roadrunners, coyotes, bobcats, and jackrabbits. Hike the breathtaking terrain to discover ghost towns and abandoned mining pits. Marvel at the genuine desert oasis with towering date palms and a spring-fed pool. Visit a museum that documents the region’s mining past. And experience a classic Western atmosphere with stables, wagon rides, and real cowboy spirit.

MODERN LUXURIES

While The Inn’s history and Wild West flavor are a big part of its appeal, it offers more than just ambience. Especially since the renovations, the historic Four Diamond Inn at Death Valley delivers the creature comforts discerning guests expect.

❧ Luxury Casitas

Although all The Inn’s newly renovated rooms offer such touches as remodeled bathrooms, the recent debut of its 22 Casitas will give guests an additional upscale option for their stays. Lush gardens edge the duplex units, which include separate living rooms and private patios. There’s no question that these Casitas will become a popular choice for honeymooners and the occasional celebrity coming to The Inn in search of a discreet getaway.

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH

Because the character of The Ranch at Death Valley is so distinct from The Inn’s, the architects were really working on two properties, not one.

Death Valley: Bursting with Life

DISCOVER THE HIDDEN SECRETS WITHIN THIS TRUE OASIS.

COLORFUL CONTRASTS

For breathtaking desert color, catch the sunrise at Zabriskie Point, which is just six minutes from The Inn at Death Valley. As the morning light reaches Manley Beacon, the prominent triangular peak in the badlands below the point, the rock brightens to a brilliant gold. And across the valley, the towering Panamint Mountain Range comes aglow with pinks and reds.

ABUNDANT NATURAL SPRINGS

Natural springs feed The Oasis at Death Valley, flowing directly into two spring-fed swimming pools. This gravity-fed system of natural springs ultimately waters the gardens and irrigates the entire golf course.

HOME OF THE SUPER-BLOOM

It’s true that Death Valley poses a challenging environment for most plants, but after an exceptionally wet autumn, the following spring can experience a rare wildflower event called a super-bloom. The most recent super-bloom occurred in 2016, and filled the valley with a riot of yellow, blue, and white blossoms.

THE WILD LIFE

Go out to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes early in the morning, and you’ll see irrefutable evidence that a variety of wildlife has adapted to Death Valley’s extremes. And for visitors looking to up their activity levels, Death Valley offers world-class hiking trails, ghost town adventures, and scenic vistas to thrill any photography buff.

— 45 — XANTERRA.COM/EXPLORE | #XANTERRATRAVEL

❧ Exercise & Recreation

Always an ideal spot to pass a couple of hours on one of Death Valley’s frequent warm, sunny days, the historic spring-fed swimming pool now has cabanas for an added measure of luxury and privacy. While hiking is the main fitness activity in Death Valley, the improved exercise room overlooking the pool gives you an alternate way to get your workout in, especially if it’s a hot day.

❧ Golf

Many visitors are surprised to discover that they can golf at The Oasis. But the beautiful and recently improved Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley challenges players with a design that earned it a place on Golf Digest’s honor roll of “America’s 50 Toughest Courses.” That’s in part because it’s the lowest-elevation course in the world — at 214 feet below sea level.

Then, when you need a little pampering after an intense workout or difficult golf round, take your pick of such wonderfully indulgent treatments as a desert hot-stone massage or an exfoliating sea-salt scrub in one of the brand-new spa rooms by the pool.

NATURAL SPLENDOR

As iconic as The Inn may be, the 1927 hotel was due for significant upgrades to both public spaces and all 66 of its guest rooms. The renovation project also created 22 Casitas and a new spa, as well as such enhancements as cabanas and a cafe by the famous springfed pool.

❧ Spa Session

Relax in The Inn’s luxurious Tranquility Spa, with pampering treatments in a garden setting. Whether you opt for a desert-stone massage, reflexology, a Swedish massage, or an exfoliating sea-salt body scrub, the professionals tailor each guest’s treatments to his or her personal needs.

Take in the scents of our famous date palm trees that grow outside the spa’s windows and truly escape the pressures of modern life. The serene spa offers the perfect prescription for desert relaxation.

❧ Fine Dining

In addition to its Old West charm, The Inn’s dining room serves up an inventive gourmet menu inspired by the desert. Many items incorporate dates, pomegranates, prickly pears, and other ingredients grown or sourced locally. Vegetarian and seafood dishes are available for guests looking for lighter, healthier eating, and a thoughtfully curated wine list rivals the quality in fine restaurants.

banks of the Waimakariri River, these gardens are open to guided walking tours. Visitors can also ride the quaint Caterpillar electric shuttle.

Views from the Christchurch Gondola

If you’d like to see the natural wonders of Christchurch from a different vantage point, try taking to the skies. Riding the Christchurch Gondola up the side of Mount Cavendish gives travelers a bird’s-eye view of the city, as well as the sprawling Canterbury Plains and the idyllic

Banks Peninsula. You can also disembark from the gondola at the top of the ride and hike to Cavendish Bluff Lookout for a panoramic experience that isn’t obscured by a tram window.

Cultural Immersion

Depending on what time of year you visit Christchurch, plan to catch one of many annual festivals hosted by the city.

November, the beginning of summer for the Southern Hemisphere, brings with it the New Zealand Cup and Show Festival — not only one of the world’s premier horse-racing events, but also the site of many other animal shows.

In January or February, you may find yourself at the Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival, where hundreds of actors, dancers, and performance artists treat the streets of Christchurch as their stage, hoping to earn spare change or bills from passersby. In mid-February, the Christchurch Lantern Festival doubles as a celebration of Chinese New Year and the city’s unique culture.

S pain GOURMET TOUR THE

For a true taste of Spain, travel its most flavorful regions.

Some trips are built around viewing fine art, visiting historic locales, or experiencing natural wonders. But for true foodies, great vacations are built around great meals. For an epicurean adventure of a lifetime, set your sights on Spain, a country renowned for its distinctive cuisine and excellent wine. Buen provecho!

— 50 — EXPLORE BY XANTERRA TRAVEL COLLECTION AROUND THE WORLD

BASQUE CUISINE AND RIOJA WINE

A modern mecca of cuisine, the Basque Country delivers both simple delights and extraordinarily complex dishes.

From delectable “pintxos,” (the Basque form of tapas) served in the city’s bars to internationally acclaimed fine dining, San Sebastian is considered one of the world’s top food destinations, second only to Kyoto, Japan, for the number of Michelin stars per capita. While exploring the historic town, dine with the members of a txoko private gastronomic club, and experience fine dining like a local.

In beautiful Pamplona, be sure to time your visit for the weekly juevintxo event, a Thursday-night feast of pintxos washed down with a local wine or a caña, a small house beer on tap.

Wine lovers shouldn’t miss a chance to roam the medieval lanes of Laguardia in the Rioja wine region and sample vintages in one of the village’s few remaining underground wine cellars, where the San Pedro family has been making wines for more than 500 years.

In Ezcaray, there is no shortage of Michelinstar dining and sumptuous hotels catering to foodies. Sample Rioja wines in a bodega wine house near the 10th-century town of Haro, and then savor a private lunch in the middle of a scenic vineyard. You can taste the history in these small towns, rolling hills, fertile farmlands, and generations-old vineyards — which have inspired chefs and winemakers for centuries.

ANDALUSIA: IBÉRICO HAM AND OLIVE OIL

For a different take on local Spanish fare, travel Andalusia’s mountains, forests, and whitewashed villages.

In Aracena, enjoy a tasting of the local goat cheese at the maker’s own shop. In the pretty village of Corteconcepción, meet an artisanal producer of Spain’s renowned Ibérico ham, and sample his worldclass jamón and homemade olive oil while visiting his pig farm.

The Moorish city of Seville offers classic tapas along with fiery flamenco. Famous for its local olive oil, Alájar is just one city where locals continue the old traditions of craftsmanship.

Near the picturesque village of Fuenteheridos, watch farmers producing honey, picking mushrooms, gathering chestnuts, or bringing their animals to graze on acorns. Such typical scenes will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

URBAN DELIGHTS

No trip to Spain is complete without indulging in its vibrant cities, be they Madrid, Andalusia, Seville or Barcelona. Visit world-class palaces, museums, plazas, and cathedrals as you’re guided through these grand destinations — with regional food a highlight at each. Enjoy local tapas at a special welcome dinner in Madrid. Stop for lunch and wine sampling at a bodega in the lovely town of Montilla in Andalusia, famous for flamenco dancing, bullfighting, and majestic Andalusian horses. Dine on hearty paella, Spain’s national dish of rice and seafood, in Valencia, its birthplace. Join a local guide through Valencia’s historic center and its beautiful outdoor Mercado Central, one of the largest markets in Europe. Savor a memorable meal or two in the Mediterranean city of Barcelona, capital of the Catalan region and one of Spain’s culinary epicenters.

YEAR-ROUND NATIONAL PARKS

The national parks bustle with life and beauty 365 days a year. The trick is timing your visit to the secret season.

SPRING GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

With the arrival of spring, the daylight hours grow longer, the snow begins to melt — and the crowds have yet to arrive. In this temperate “Goldilocks Zone” — not too hot, not too cold — the timing is perfect for exploring the Grand Canyon on foot.

“One of my favorite sights is when there’s a late snow shower in the spring…because the canyon takes on an entirely different look,” says Mia Bell, general manager of the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. “And if you’re fortunate enough to be here when the cactus flowers are in bloom, you’ll be amazed at their beauty.”

That floral display is rivaled by

something that still astounds Bell: the famous “canyon inversion.”

“It’s one of the most unforgettable scenes you’ll ever see,” she says. “In certain conditions in the spring, the canyon will be filled with fog — clouds, really — which may leave only just the tops of the rock formations visible. Photographers love to shoot this surreal scene. It’s like a soft blanket has been stuffed into every curve and fold of the Grand Canyon.”

When you enter Grand Canyon National Park, you’re entering a 1.2 million-acre nature preserve with dozens of unique and native wildlife species. Spring is the perfect time to view these animals and, often, their newborns.

SUMMER GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

With 762 lakes, 563 streams, and more than 25 named waterfalls, summer is the perfect time to enjoy the pristine water features and mountain landscapes of Montana’s Glacier National Park. The picture-perfect mountain waters host canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, and fishing. With peak staffing this time of year, take advantage of guided tours and ranger-led activities, whether by foot, boat, or horseback.

And summer is the only time travelers can access the famous “Going-to-the-Sun Road.” This spectacular 50-mile, two-lane road spans the width of Glacier, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, a 6,646-foot summit. Traveling this road — named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 — you’ll experience every terrain the park has to offer.

Finally, with kids on summer vacation, Glacier offers myriad outdoor activities for city slickers and avid adventurers alike. Whether it’s backpacking experiences or stand-up paddleboarding, the park offers expert instruction for all levels during the JuneSeptember months.

FALL ZION NATIONAL PARK

The Utah canyons are never more colorful than in fall. From September to November, witness a riot of color — amber, red, orange, and yellow — accenting the landscapes and rocky cliffs. Autumn is a special time in Zion as the crowds dissipate and the temperatures cool off, affording visitors a more relaxing visit in the park. Whether on foot or by car, this is the ideal time to explore the park and seek out the unique rock formations and natural arches.

Fall is also the best time to visit the famous Emerald Pools. Easy to access but exceptional to experience, these algae-tinged waters lead to a 110-foot waterfall. But you can let the massive rock formations and geological sites anchor your itinerary. From the vast Towers of the Virgin to the narrow peak of Angel’s Landing, you’ll experience some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery. Z ZionLodge.com

WINTER YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Winter brings some of the best wildlife-viewing opportunities in the park, when the heightened contrast against the snowy scenery makes the animals more visible — especially the larger mammals. Although bears take to their dens for a long winter’s nap, other creatures are up and about, foraging for food. Plus, their frozen footprints make them easier to track.

While in Yellowstone, watch for bison herds trekking through the snow, their breath steamy in the frigid air. They sometimes convene near the park’s thermal features for a steam bath. Yellowstone’s famous wolves are in their element in winter. With their woolly coats, long legs, and large fleshy paws, they do well in deep snow.

Not up for trekking around yourself? You can always try wildlife watching from the comfort and warmth of a snowcoach. This fleet of adapted 13-passenger Ford vans travels on massive tires, trekking over snow-covered landscapes without sinking.

Finally, cross-country ski and snowshoe tours offer private tours of Yellowstone for any skill level. Exploring the pristine, snow-covered landscape by foot delivers a quiet solitude that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to the bustle of regular life.
