JINHAE GUNHANG FESTIVAL

The Main Programs

The 2018 Jinhae Gunhang Festival will kick off April 1 and run to April 10 at Yeojwa-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Gunhang means naval base and Jinhae is famous for the Korean Navy presence and cherry blossoms in spring time. Cherry blossoms are flowers that represent the beginning of spring and blooms for only one week in early April. Make sure you don’t miss seeing the cherry blossoms bloom during this time of the year.

Major events such as the Pungmul Market (Korean traditional market) and art and cultural performances will be held at the Jungwon Intersection and the memorial ceremony parade of Admiral Yi Sun Shin will be held at Bugwon Intersection. In addition, there are events that represent the city’s naval base and history. For example, you can watch the military band and honor guards’ performances or visit the Navy History Museum at the Korea Naval Academy. Inside the museum, there is a full-scale turtle ship and Korean maritime history exhibitions. Most importantly, don’t forget to take a picture with cherry blossoms around Yeojwa stream. I hope you will make memories of happy spring days with cherry blossoms at Jinhae.

Festival Origin

The festival originated from Admiral Yi Sun Shin’s memorial ceremony that started in 1952. In 1963, the ceremony evolved into a spring festival for the city of Jinhae to promote their traditional culture. The festival has grown year after year and is now the largest cherry blossom festival in South Korea. More than two million Korean and foreign tourists visit the city during the festival.

MUNGYEONG TRADITIONAL CHASABAL FESTIVAL The Mungyeong Traditional Chasabal Festival will kick off April 28 and run to May 7 at the event site (Koreans reference this site as an “open-set” site) on Mungyeong saejae, Mungyeong-eup, Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The theme of the festival is “Dream of Mungyeong CHASABAL! Captures the World” [sic] and it has been held for 20 years. Cha means tea and Sabal means bowl, so Chasabal means a cup from which to drink tea in Korean. If you want to enjoy your life with a cup of tea, you should visit Mungyeong.

Festival Origin

In the old days, ordinary people in Korea used “Sabal” for bowls. It was a very ordinary, inexpensive, high-quality bowl that anyone could use. In particular, sabals were made a lot at Mungyeong. Mungyeong is a city between Seoul and Gyeongsang-do. The rich sandy soil and well

developed transport route in Mungyeong has helped develop the ceramic industry in the past, but as industrialization began, the number of people who used sabal decreased. The festival started to remind people of Mungyeong’s a thousand year ceramic tradition.

The Main Programs

Various ceramic experience programs are available such as making traditional ceramic or drinking tea in a chasabal and you can also buy traditional chasabal cheaply at the surprise auction. In addition, not only Korean potters but also British, German, and Chinese potters participate in the festival. There is an exhibition to appreciate these potter’s ceramic arts.
