had a premiere in Spanish cinemas. This happens despite the fact that most film festivals select Korean films (such as the San Sebastian Film Festival) and they used to be very acclaimed. What’s the problem, then?

Enrique Costa from Avalon Productions, a distribution company, commented that, “Generally speaking, to open a nonAmerican film is complicated. Screeners are reluctant. Sometimes its audience has already seen it in a festival. Another influential factor is the economic subsidies that Spanish, Latin American and European movies receive from the government – for example, the European Union’s and the embassy’s MEDIA plan - something that hasn’t happened with Asian film. Therefore, when a distributor has to choose between a French and a Korean movie, he is going to choose the first option.” One example of an eastern movie acclaimed by reviewers but without a release date is City Of Life And Death, winner of the San Sebastian Film Festival. Soo il Jeon, director of Himalaya, is quite sure, “Festivals like Cannes show more commercial films, like Old Boy. If festivals don’t select your movie, it’s almost impossible to distribute it.” This director has had many problems because of he makes independent and experimental films. Nevertheless, his luck has changed. His last film, I Came From Busan, was selected in Cannes.
