Young Maths Masters

In April, school children from across the UK took part in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge. More than 200,000 pupils across the UK sat the challenge, with 50 pupils from Year 7 and 8 at Hull Collegiate School taking part. Congratulations to Year 8 pupils Joshua and Tom who went on to achieve Merit Certificates in the Junior Maths Olympiad, the final round of the challenge which only the top 0.5% of pupils qualify for. The following is an example question from previous Olympiad challenges: Roger picks two consecutive integers, one of which ends in a 5. He multiplies the integers together and then squares the result. What are the last two digits of his answer? A special mention to Year 8 pupil Charlie who achieved results within the top 5% nationally and went on to

Head of Maths, Miss Jo Dyer said, ‘’ The department is immensely proud of all these pupils but in particular huge congratulations must go to the three pupils who have qualified for the next round. I have had the pleasure of teaching top set Year 8 for the last two years and the extra stretch and challenge that I have incorporated into every lesson has clearly given the skills they need to achieve this prestigious accolade.’’
