A foundation degree is your ideal stepping stone to a full Honours degree. It is equivalent to two thirds of an Honours Degree, usually studied over two years with the option to top - up. It is designed in association with employers to combine academic study skills with industry related learning. You can gain professional and technical skills to further

Students who wish to progress their studies within higher education can then stay with us to complete the level 6 (Honours stage) of the degree. This option is for students who wish to continue

your career alongside a more traditional academic format. Foundation degrees usually focus on a particular job or profession such as the creative industries or health sector. They are intended to increase the professional and technical skills of students intending to go into that profession.

HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATION 2019 O n T h u rs d ay 2 4 t h O c t o b e r, we hosted the Hull Colleg e Higher Education Graduation. We h a d ove r 2 3 0 s t u d e n t s g ra d u a t i n g , i n c l u d i n g o u r f i rs t c o h o r t s o f s t u d e n t s g ra d u a t i n g f ro m o u r ow n Foundation Degrees. T h ey c e l e b ra t e d fa n t a s t i c achievements and this marks t h e s t a r t o f a n exc i t i n g n ew j o u r n ey. T h e s h ow p i e c e eve n t wa s held at Hull City Hall seeing hundreds of students, studying both undergraduate a n d p o s t g ra d u a t e c o u rs e s , i n b o t h o f o u r fa c u l t i e s , crossing the stage to c o l l e c t t h e i r d e g re e s . With the help of Guest Lecturer and Sport Photographer, Leo Francis, our students received an in-depth briefing about how to adjust their camera settings and capture sharp a n d d e t a i l e d p h o t o s fu l l of excitement and drama.

STUDENTS CURATE EXHIBITION OF NHS STAFF ARTWORK Last academic year we wo r ke d w i t h t h e N H S t o curate and exhibit a collection o f a r t wo r k s p ro d u c e d by p e o p l e wo r k i n g a c ro s s t h e health sector. The exhibition i n c l u d e d p h o t o g ra p hy, painting & graphic illustration and was extremely well re c e i ve d by v i s i t o rs . After the success of the ex h i b i t i o n , i t re t u r n e d i n N ove m b e r a n d i t wa s g re a t t o s e e s o m u c h c re a t i v i t y t h r i v i n g i n a n e nv i ro n m e n t not usually associated with the ar ts.

NINE MEN AND FRIDA In 2018, we were approached by Gary Hammond on how best to suppor t the unveiling of a commemorative monument t o h o n o u r t h o s e f ro m H u l l w h o fo u g h t i n t h e S p a n i s h C i v i l Wa r. W i t h H u l l b e i n g a p o r t c i t y, i t p l aye d a p a r t i n s u p p l y i n g t h e wa r e f fo r t ; a s a h o m e fo r c h i l d re n f ro m t h e b a t t l e z o n e a n d a s a l i fe c h a n g i n g c o u rs e fo r n i n e m e n a n d o n e wo m a n f ig h t i n g o n t h e Re p u b l i c a n s i d e . WHO WANTS TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR? Our students were in for a real treat when fifty FEO ( Fo r E n t r e p r e n e u r s O n l y ) members joined up with us and St Mar y ’s student s for a masterclass in business. This included motivational t a l k s , i n t e ra c t i ve b u s i n e s s opportunities through Dragons Den style workshops and the chance to spend quality time with the region’s most inspirational business leaders. Boardrooms were created and the students were asked to formulate business ideas, which they then pitched

to industr y professionals. The winning team won a trip to the prestigious Business Day Conference at Bridling ton Spa where Lo rd S u g a r h i m s e l f wa s t h e h e a d l i n e s p e a k e r. Lucy Francis delivered a talk at the conference on how the next g en programme is suppor ting young people in business and becoming their own boss, something

we are passionate about delivering here at Hull College. The masterclass and Business Day Conference p r o v e d t o b e a n i nv a l u a b l e experience that will not only aid our students in p ro g re s s i n g fu r t h e r i n t h e i r studies but also inspire their future entrepreneurial pursuits.

HUMBER STREET GALLERY We h a v e p a r t n e r e d w i t h H u m b e r S t re e t G a l l e r y t o s u p p o r t t h e Fr u i t Fa c t o r y N e t wo r k ( FF N ) i n i t i a t i ve t o promote visual artists based i n H u l l a n d Ea s t R i d i n g . T h i s p ro fe s s i o n a l d eve l o p m e n t c o u rs e ex p o r t s 2 0 e a r l y c a re e r a r t i s t s t o fo u r c i t i e s a c ro s s t h e U K f ro m A p r i l 2 0 1 9 – M a rc h 2 0 2 0. Not only do ar tists get to immerse themselves in different art forms across the county, but it also integrates them into a national creative network and provides g u i d a n c e t o t h o s e p u rs u i n g a c a re e r i n t h e v i s u a l a r t s . T h e p ro g ra m m e ’s p u r p o s e i s t o b u i l d a s p i ra t i o n s a n d ra i s e t h e b e n c h m a r k fo r visual ar t in Hull. T h e s t u d e n t s we re t a s ke d with finding a low cost p ro d u c t t o u p s c a l e i n o rd e r t o m a ke a p ro f i t , w i t h t h e winning team accruing the m o s t m o n ey. Mar tin Johnson, co-founder and CEO of Tra n s 2 Pe r fo r m a n c e , t h e n delivered a motivational talk around entrepreneurship and the mindset necessary to succeed.

This is the star t of what we h o p e w i l l b e a n o n g o i n g partnership with the u n i ve rs i t y, w i t h l o t s m o re exc h a n g e o p p o r t u n i t i e s t o come. T h e e n t i re s p a c e h a s b e e n overhauled with new acoustic t re a t m e n t , m i x i n g a re a a n d o u t b o a rd h a rd wa re .

We have partnered with Ferens t o ru n a ye a r o f exc i t i n g a n d engaging creative workshops t o ex p l o re d i f fe re n t a r t a n d design processes, enabling our members to build up their por tfolio whilst receiving exper t tuition from professional ar tists and o u r t u t o rs . T h e s t u d e n t s also get the chance to visit Ferens Ar t Gallery and other heritage learning sites. The London visit in November was the first event and over 1000 members created a popu p s e l f - p o r t ra i t ex h i b i t i o n a n d h a d a m a s t e rc l a s s w i t h a n i n d u s t r y p ro fe s s i o n a l . T h e ex h i b i t i o n wa s a g re a t way for members to explore t h e i r i d e n t i t y. The students will continue t o d eve l o p t h e i r p o r t fo l i o s w i t h u s ove r t h e c o m i n g we e k s i n p re p a ra t i o n fo r their final exhibition at S omerset House in London, t h i s s u m m e r. This was the 4 4th year to graduate and proved t o b e a n o t h e r s u c c e s s fu l s h ow t h a t wowe d v i s i t o rs . The curated exhibition filled our iconic building and held an amalgamation of innovative c re a t i o n s ra n g i n g f ro m t h e s u rre a l t o t h e a b s t ra c t . T h e s t u d e n t s a d d re s s e d i s s u e s f ro m i n d u s t r y a n d e c o l o g y to the juxtaposition of i n n o c e n c e a n d ev i l . M P E m m a H a rd y v i s i t e d t h e ex h i b i t i o n o n o p e n i n g n ig h t a n d wa s i m p re s s e d by t h e incredibly high standard a n d t a l e n t o n d i s p l ay r ig h t h e re i n H u l l .
