HUDDERSFIELD CHORAL SOCIETY Celebrating 175 years In the 175 years since Huddersfield Choral Society was founded, it has performed in many of the world's great musical centres. Its special quality is the unique ‘Huddersfield Sound’ – a thrilling full-bodied and firm blended tone, flexible enough for both the most shattering climaxes and for the softest but focused pianissimos. The anniversary season will be marked in a number of ways in addition to the regular subscribers’ and public concerts, with an updated history of the Society entitled And the Glory already being published. Highlights this season include a special performance in Huddersfield of Elgar's "Dream of Gerontius" on 18th June 2011 - the nearest Saturday to the 175th anniversary. We will also be holding a series of free workshops to encourage and develop singers of all ages. A choral conducting workshop in conjunction with the University of Huddersfield will strengthen the exist-

ing relationship with our principal sponsor, whose continued support we are grateful to acknowledge. Workshops for children and young people will also be offered in partnership with the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival and Kirklees Borough Council. This season our Junior Choirs also celebrate the milestone of their 25th anniversary. An exciting range of concerts and other events are planned for our young people, culminating in a special concert on 2nd July 2011 at which current members will be joined in performance by former members of the Choirs. Former members are encouraged to get in touch via j u n i o r . c h o i r s @ h u d d e r s f i e l dchoral.com. A full list of engagements and other events can be found on our website www.huddersfieldchoral.com – and for users of social media, you’ll find us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube too as we look ahead in the Society’s third century of existence.

Welcome to the Greenwood Centre Residents and visitors of Ravensthorpe can enjoy their brand new Library, Information and Children’s Centre – ‘The Greenwood Centre’ which is now open to the public. This exciting and modern development provides access to a wide range of facilities in the heart of the Ravensthorpe community, including a Library and Information Centre (LIC), and provision of meeting space and community rooms. The Library and Information Centre provides access to council and community information, assistance with completing council forms, free access to the internet, as well

as an excellent choice of books. The new building is also home to a Sure Start Children’s Centre, where children and their families can access services and information. The centre facilities include a consultation room and kitchen, which can be used for healthy eating promotions and cookery training. Artists Lesley Fallais and Jane Revitt were commissioned by arts agency Loca to get local residents creatively involved in developing ideas for a series of artworks and unique design features which are now displayed inside and outside the building. Kirklees Young Musician of the Year second place Katrina Lee

On a dark and cloudy evening in 1802, villagers using long rakes were collecting contraband rum secreted in the reeds lining the canal. The clouds parted and the moon shone bright. Customs men, keeping watch, shouted “What are you doing?” A villager, and quick thinker, answered “Can’t you see – the Moon has fallen into the canal. We’re raking her out before she drowns!” The Customs men laughed “Moon in the water! A right lot of…Moonrakers you are!” and left them to it. So at February half term holiday, the story of the raking the moon is celebrated by the villagers of Slaithwaite, with lanterns, storytelling, bands, music, dancing and rakes. That’s Moonraking! Make your New Year’s Resolution to get in shape How many of us make a New Year’s resolution to become more active or to shed a few pounds after the excesses of the festive weeks? The answer is a good few of us do but not that many of us stick to our somewhat unrealistic targets and goals or manage to keep going for more than the first few weeks of January. Change4life recommend 8 ‘changes’ that parents need to make to help give their kids a healthier future. You can find lots more tips and ideas, plus other ways that you can get involved, at www.nhs.uk/change4life or by calling 0300 123 3434. Our three top tips are to becoming more active and becoming fitter, healthier and start to shape up and loose weight are: 1. Reduce the amount of time you spend sitting down Build up to at least 30 minutes activity each day and you’ll find it makes a difference. Use the stairs instead of the lift, park your car a little further away and walk for a few more minutes, walk to the shop for your newspaper or take the kids to the park so you can all enjoy a bit of a run about. 2. Get active when travelling Could you walk or cycle to work? Or walk the children to school? How about getting off the bus one stop earlier and walking to where you want to be? Build activity into your daily life and you’ll find that its easy to reach a target of at least 30 minutes a day. 3. Take up an active hobby There lots of sports and activities across Kirklees which you can choose to get involved in. If you are new to sport or want to try a sport you haven’t played for many years then find out about sport4life – a great way to meet other adults. With netball, rugby, tennis, jogging, badminton and a host of other sports it could be ideal for you. Visit www.kirklees.gov.uk /sport4life or ring 01484 234012. Kirklees Active Leisure sports centres and swimming pools offer a huge range of weekly sessions, gyms and activity programmes for everyone from complete beginners to dedicated sportsmen and women. There are lots of

sessions for families and children and young people. Kirklees is a place with fabulous countryside and walking is a great way to improve your health. Start gently and gradually build up to walking a little faster for a little longer. If you want to join other walkers who take part in short walks then get in touch with the Kirklees Walking Network on 01484 234097 and find out what’s going on near where you live. There are literally hundreds of sports clubs in Kirklees and many offer the chance to start a new sport and get involved in regular sporting activity. Visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/leisure to find out more about sports across the district. If you are someone with a health condition you may be concerned about starting any kind of activity. If you consult your GP or Practice Nurse they will advise you about the most appropriate kind of activity for you. So the message is “Get up and about” – it’s great fun, a good way to meet people and you’ll feel better, tone up and reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. Couple a bit more activity with a healthy eating approach and you too like thousands of others have started to “change4life”.
