Have you done the MidLife Check? Kirklees Council have joined forces with NHS Kirklees to encourage people to turn their good intentions into reality by taking part in the MidLife Check. Huddersfield Giants have recently come on board to help promote the campaign, which is aimed at those aged 40+. The MidLife Check is a free confidential online health check. The simple lifestyle questionnaire looks at healthy eating, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and emotional well being. At the end of the series of questions each person taking part is provided with their own online personal results, along with advice that can be used to plan lifestyle changes to improve their health. 63 year old Steve Mellor from Mirfield took part in the online MidLife Check after his daughter told him about it. “It only took a few minutes and I found out that having quit smoking some years ago had gone in my favour in terms of my health. I also found out that I could do with making some small changes to my diet, and to be a little more active, which is something I’ve got out of the habit of doing. I would recommend doing the check as it makes you look at your lifestyle and shows you that making a few simple changes to your lifestyle can make all the difference to your health.” Project Officer, Cath Mellor commented: “The MidLife Check is quick and easy to complete, just visit www.nhs.uk/midlifecheck.Those wanting to take part can go online at home or visit their local Library and Information Centre where free internet

access is available, as well as a range of health related books. It’s a great way of finding out how you’re doing and setting goals for areas you can improve. Often making just small changes can make a big difference.” Paul Cribb, Commercial Manager for Huddersfield Giants commented: “With people’s lives becoming busier and busier we sometimes use this as an excuse to neglect the most important thing, our health. Mid-

Life Check is a fantastic way of utilizing the internet to give a quick and accurate overview of how we are treating our bodies. The most positive thing for me is that rather than just identifying any health issues MidLife Check actually gives advice and recommendations that will help the Kirklees public lead a healthier and happier life. The Giants are proud to be associated with such a great project and will be promoting MidLife Check throughout the year.”

BRASS IN THE PARK – MAY TO SEPTEMBER 2011 This Summer’s Brass in the Park promises to be better than ever! Our parks and museum gardens will be filled with the sounds of music with 22 FREE concerts for you and your friends and family to enjoy. Brass band music has a long history and tradition in Kirklees and has always had an enthusiastic following. Kirklees Council is proud to maintain this tradition and this year’s Brass in the Park features many top quality local brass bands. Once again, we have great pleasure inviting two youth bands to perform for you – Sellers International Youth and Scissett Youth. Last year, we programmed Brass Monkeys jazz band and their concert was very well received. In light of this, we have invited them back this year along with another band, Hade Edge Jazz, to bring you brass with a difference! We are pleased to welcome back Greenhead Park as one of our concert venues, following its extensive restoration programme. The refurbished bandstand now has the reinstated lake close by. This popular park is a great place to enjoy a day out and listen to some great music. In addition, the bandstand in Beaumont Park is due to be returned to its former glory by June. We appreciate that some of our concert-goers would like seating at these concerts, but due to the limited resources available we cannot cover the costs of providing audience seating. Whilst there may be a few spare chairs at some venues, this cannot be guaranteed and so you are encouraged to bring along your own garden chairs, rugs or fold up seating with you. Please check the dates and times, pack your picnics and enjoy these wonderful bands in lovely surroundings. For more information visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/brassbands or Tel: 01484 222087
