Retro romance

New season wedding dresses are oozing with classic features, taking their cues from history’s most glamorous eras GLAMOUR is back in vogue for weddings! If you’re currently searching for your dream wedding gown, then look out for styles from a bygone age with inspiration from the golden days of Hollywood glamour and calflength tea dresses from the 1950’s. Colours too are changing with `blush’ being the shade of the moment with other pale pastels such as lemon and blue taking their lead from the 1950’s. Look out for vintagestyle 50s dresses in colours which were popular during that era. If you’re choosing a calf-length gown, then you can really go to town on some stunning shoes and make a real statement. Romantic lace is also making a comeback for summer 2013, some of which is inspired by 1920’s flapper-style designs.

NECKLINES Necklines are under the spotlight this summer with unusual shaping and exciting use of lace. Floral dress designs are `big’ and this is often carried through to the neckline with

use of lace petals to create an unusual look. Halter-neck designs are also available for wedding gowns and make a great summer statement. Halter-neck gowns, often with feature lace, create a great look from both the front and back, showing off slender shoulders and a hint of skin.

SLEEVES If you want to cover your arms, you’re in luck as sleeves are making a comeback. Despite the summer months, both long and three-quarter sleeves are popular this season, and let’s face it, if it’s a UK wedding you’re having you’ll probably be glad of the extra coverage! Many wedding gowns are featuring lace

“Look out for styles from a bygone age”

sleeves so you can still keep your cool, cover up and also go for a romantic look.

PEPLUMS Wedding dress designers are carrying on the current fascination with peplums. Peplum designs were made popular in the 1940s by Christian Dior and have made a comeback more recently. This feminine style

is ideal for brides with bigger busts as the design will give them an hour-glass figure and will cinch in the waist. Peplums are generally added to an otherwise simple design to create a sleek profile. For a softer look, choose a peplum in a lace or tulle design which will still define the waist.

Finishing touches on a budget... THERE’S no denying that getting married is an expensive business. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t cut costs on some of the finer details. More and more brides are looking to economise on things like table decorations, floral decorations and invites and favours. And, with all things pared back and vintage being particularly on trend right now, achieving the look lends itself well to a minimum spend. For brides-to-be with a little bit of time and just a touch of creativity, it’s easy to wow

Signature cordial There are loads of homemade cordials you can make with just a few fresh ingredients. Opt for classic summer combinations like elderflower and lime or blackcurrant and pear.

Flower power Paint tiny seedling plant pots to match your colour scheme. Plant sunflower seeds in the painted pots a few weeks before your big day, so the seedlings will have just sprouted in time for your wedding. Make sure you do extra to account for any no-show seedlings!

PRETTY PETALS Doing your own flowers may sound expensive and time consuming but it doesn’t have to be.

Country casual Ideal for outdoor weddings: in the months leading up to your big day, start collecting glass jars in all shapes and sizes – and ask friends and family to help, too. The day before your wedding collect as many wild flowers as possible – do your research first and find a good spot that offers plenty of variety – you may have to buy a few to get the volume you need. Fruit twist Contrary to popular belief, you can have a wedding without flowers. Opt for fruit instead – it’s certainly cheaper! Lemons are a great example, and whether you keep them whole, piled high in large bowls with plenty of green contrasting leaves, or slice into rounds and

Go low Big blooms mean less flowers. Opt for peonies or antiques roses. One flower easily fills a vintage teacup. Start raiding car boot sales and charity shops months before your wedding to get enough hodge podge cups and saucers for each setting.

A couple of real characters... We take a look behind the scenes of Dom and Leanne Gregson’s spectacularly colourful Disney Pixar themed wedding… WHEN Dom and Leanne Gregson decided to tie the knot, they wanted their big day to be unique; one for their family and friends to remember for years to come. So for their recent wedding at The Venue in Barkisland, the couple decided on a Disney Pixar inspired multi-coloured theme. Leanne, who is a Batley primary school teacher, said: “We both love all 13 Pixar films and decided to incorporate film characters and a host of colour into the wedding.” Pixar films include the hugely popular Toy Story series as well as Bugs Life, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille which are also favourites of the couple's young son Charlie. With all these characters and colours in mind, Leanne set about making many of the wedding day accessories herself including buttonholes and bouquets, all made from large colourful buttons. She said: “My wedding dress was just about the only thing that was traditional about the whole day. I dressed my five bridesmaids in

all different colours and the best man and ushers tied in with the colour theme by each of them co-ordinating their socks and ties with one of the bridesmaids.

success, made all the better by the fact that the couple had picked a lovely summer day. “We couldn't believe how lucky we were with the weather. After all the disappointing

“So many of our guests commented that they loved the theme” “Both Dom, who is a personal trainer, and I wanted the wedding to be different and one to remember. The colour theme worked really well and all the 13 tables for our 130 guests were named after the 13 Pixar films. “Other features including a colourful rocky road cake, handmade favours, coloured centrepiece balloons on all the tables and an Alien Toy Story character post box for our guests to put their messages in.'' The recent wedding on June 1 was a huge

weather, we had a great sunny day. So many of our guests commented that they loved the theme.'' After the wedding ceremony itself, all the guests tucked in to a wedding breakfast with a difference. Instead of a traditional threecourse meal, the happy couple and their guests enjoyed a hearty Mexican themed meal. “The meal was so nice and just a complete change from the norm,’’ said Leanne.

The celebrations were rounded off with an evening reception with music from a Motown band. “There were so many people who helped us enjoy a great day. I traveled to the wedding with my dad in a Mercedes Roadster. This was nice as it was only a two-seater car so my dad had to drive me to my wedding as well as walk me down the aisle.’’ Leanne and Dom, who live in Moldgreen, are all set to enjoy a 10-day honeymoon in New York later this year. The couple would like to thank three friends who helped them on the big day: photographer Carol Kitson, make-up specialist Caroline Marsh of Delicate Elegance and cakemaker Claire Sheard from Crumbs sandwich shop in Brighouse who placed Eve and Wall-e film characters on top of the rocky road cake. A great day was had by all.

The mother of all outfits

Hints and tips for the second most important lady of the day THE big day is looming and as the mother of the bride, this will be one of the most important events of your life. Your `baby’ is getting married and like every other event in her life, you want it to be special and perfect. No doubt you will have been helping with the arrangements in the run-up to the wedding day but make sure you don’t neglect yourself. As the mother-of-the-bride you are one of the main players in the whole wedding day and you’ll want to be dressed to impress on the big day. It’s always worth chatting to the mother of the bridegroom to discuss the colouring and styling of your outfit and accessories. The last thing you want is for both of you to turn up wearing similar outfits or heaven forbid, the same colour. Once you’ve chatted through your initial thoughts, it’s time to take to the shops and

see what’s out there. Many occasion-wear outlets now specialise in being able to supply the whole outfit from head to toe. Not only can you buy your dress and jacket but now you can choose a matching handbag

“’ll want to be dressed to impress on the big day” and shoes from the shop’s extensive range. Some also offer a shoe dying service to enable you to replicate the exact colour of your outfit. Finishing touches like jewellery are also available to complete your look. Because this wedding day is such a high profile occasion, don’t be tempted to

team also customises hats and fascinators. She has also sourced elegant shoes and bags without the designer price tag.

That’s because Sue, who owns the House of Elliot near Ainley Top, Halifax, has found a niche in the wedding market.

Her new venture is certainly paying off. Since introducing it earlier this year Sue has never been busier.

Customers still want head-turning, stylish outfits that they could wear again, but at more down to earth prices.

“We are out to show that you don’t have to break the bank to look a million dollars, or get stressed travelling from shop to shop trying to find a hat, shoes and bag to match,” said Sue. “We can sort everything and while it is elegant and classy it’s also very wearable.”

Sue did her research and came back with the ideal solution. Her business now offers three wedding packages. The bronze option costs up to £355

skimp on your outfit. This is a day you will remember forever and you want to both look and feel great, particularly on the wedding photographs. Just accept that on this occasion, you need a good budget.

■ Don’t choose an outfit which is overly sexy

Some golden rules to follow as mother-ofthe-bride include:

■ Opt for a good quality fabric

■ Don’t outshine the bride ■ Steer clear of black – it’s not a funeral! ■ Avoid flashy colours, choose something

a little more muted

■ Choose a classic look rather than high fashion ■ I t’s a good idea to choose a jacket as well so you can keep warm if it’s a cool day. ■ And, finally, enjoy the day and don’t forget the tissues!

NEW AUTUMN/WINTER STYLES ARRIVING DAILY. We have put together a selection of amazing packages for 2013, which not only will not break the bank for the mother of the brides and grooms, but you’ll look fabulous on the big day giving even the bride a run for her money.

By visiting House of Elliot you can be rest assured that you will be the only guest in your outfit. For the ultimate shopping experience then the House of Elliot is the store for you.

Sue is keeping prices down by using European designers - mainly Spanish whose names are not that well known in this country. Many of them have their own factories and mix expensive fabrics like silk with polyester.

Style and quality fabric/design are second to none but without the hefty price tag. All under one roof. Personal honest advice and a shopping experience not to be missed.

Call of duty BEING a groom doesn’t mean being sidelined anymore. Don’t think that the only thing you need to do is rock up on the day with the wedding rings. Men are expected to pull their weight and get involved with planning – at every level. But that doesn’t have to mean boredom and stress. Opt for the areas of the wedding that interest you most and just like studying for an exam – do your preparation and research - and you’ll pass with flying colours!

What to wear Admittedly, this is probably more of a collaborative effort as your attire should fit the wedding colour scheme and theme, but just as you’d never dream of telling your bride what to wear, you need to be happy and comfortable in your get up too. Shop around for your suit, decide whether you want to buy or hire, and try a number of different cuts and fits, and see what looks – and feels – best for you. Always get a second opinion from your most stylish friend too.

Choose the ‘best’ best man Try not to cave into pressure from your fiancée or family. Your best man should be someone you really trust and who you can count on to look after the rings and help you with your duties. It’s also probably wise to choose a best man who won’t throw you a stag do so wild, that you don’t make it to your

wedding day…

Honeymoon planning While you may not get left solely in charge of planning the destination, you’ll earn major brownie points if you arrange a few extras. Whether it’s a special excursion, room upgrade or expensive restaurant, something that takes a little extra consideration will help make your holiday one to remember.

Music to your ears

“The best speeches are those that are naturally engaging, personal and not forced’’ Most grooms are happy to be in charge of the music for their wedding. Usually the main choice is a DJ or a band, but some also opt to create their own wedding playlist – or if you’re that way inclined – maybe you want to

wow your bride with a special rendition of her favourite song! When choosing the music, be sure to consider your guests as well as you and your fiancées’ personal tastes. You don’t want to be the only ones on the dance floor enjoying your special drum ‘n’ bass remix.

Speech to their own You can read all the blog posts in the world and ask as many mates as you want, but

when it comes to writing your own speech it has to be from the heart. That doesn’t mean it has to be mushy, but don’t worry so much about entertaining your guests (that’s the best man’s job) as getting across what you want to say and thanking the people who have made your day extra special. The best speeches are those that are naturally engaging, personal and not forced. A swift drink may steady your nerves but be wary of having one too many…

Food for thought... Make sure your wedding food lingers on your guests’ lips long after they’ve scoffed the last petit four WEDDING receptions ain’t what they used to be. At one time the reception following the ceremony was very traditional and formal with a three-course meal for guests, followed by the speeches and handing out of the wedding cake. Now it’s often a case of `anything goes’ and the wedding reception is usually more informal with a buffet or even food like fish and chips, pie and peas or luxury hot dogs. Some brides and grooms call on the services of an ice cream van to provide the dessert!

Other ideas for outdoor food include posh kebabs, signature ice creams, soup and roast beef sandwiches or even an afternoon tea with delicate sandwiches, a selection of cakes and cream scones.

The great outdoors

Dinner is served

If you’re planning a reception in a marquee, then the choice of food lends itself to a more informal choice such as a barbecue or hog roast. You can either serve hot pork sandwiches or sliced meat served with a range of salads, pastas, rice, potatoes or bread. If you’ve got a wedding early in the day, then you could even think about serving bacon butties.

With a bit of imagination, even a traditional sit down wedding breakfast can be a meal to remember. However, rather than dish up a traditional soup or prawn cocktail starter, why not think about a selection of canapés served on large oval plates on the tables? Always remember to cater for any vegetarian guests and offer them a good choice.

Make your wedding day

The main meal at any wedding tends to still be meat and two veg but again cater for vegetarians, and if possible, give your guests a choice. Why not offer a selection of small desserts so guests can try two or three and still not feel guilty about indulging a sweet tooth? Think about small dishes of crème brülée, tiny meringues, cupcakes, fruit salad, pretty individual cakes... The choice is endless.

new. Mix in speciality breads, platters of cooked meats, charcuterie favourites, cheeses, pastas, dips and olives, Caesar salad, Coronation or lemon chicken and dressed salmon. For puddings, offer a choice to suit all. Choose from a fresh fruit salad, pavlova, cheese board, traditional trifle and it’s always a good idea to offer a chocolate choice as well for all your chocoholic guests.

Lovely spread Putting on a good spread is a must for your guests and a buffet can provide the perfect example of this. Nothing looks better than a table loaded with different kinds of food, all just waiting to be enjoyed. The question is: do you go for a traditional buffet of sandwiches, chicken legs, sausage rolls, salads and vol-au-vents or do you opt for a more contemporary feast? Always remember you will have some elderly guests at your wedding so you need to cater for them as well. The best idea is to offer a mix of old and
