About the Intranet

23.

Spotlight On – area will be used to introduce new employees or focus on an existing employee. Will help others to get to know the employee better. Information that can be shared will include where they work, how long they have been in their present job, what they like to do for fun, charities they participate in, and any other info the employee would like to share that is not too personal or polarizing. 23.a – Suggest an employee button provides a way for other employees to nominate a coworker for the spotlight. Form can be completed online and submitted to Jen and/or Corrie for consideration from the intranet. 23.b – Past Spotlights – an archive of past spotlights can be made available and made searchable.

24.

Local Weather – useful for those who depend on the weather to make determinations on a project as well as a nice to have on the site.

25.

Quick Links tab – this area will contain the more commonly requested links for quick access.

26.

My Links tab – this area will allow an employee to add links that they use most often and have them right before them for easy access. Need to decide which tab will be seen first by default.

27.

My Perspective is an area set aside for executives and managers to keep their employees motivated, engaged, and informed. This area will pull from blogs that the execs and mangers update. The display should automatically pull from the most recent post made. 27.a – Date format needs to be decided on and made uniform across the board. 27.b – Comments can be added to the posts 27.c – A Read More button will take the visitor directly to the blog.

28.

Media Center area provides quick access to the many types of media a company may use. 28.a – Wikis that are available for employee use 28.b – Dashboards that help employees find additional work databases. 28.c – TV – link to Babcock videos and animations posted internally or externally, i.e. YouTube 28.d – Podcasts – list of recordings available to listen to or download to an iPod or MP3 player device. 28.e – My Media Links – provides an area for employees to add their most often used media links in one place.

29.

Looking for new ideas and suggestions – graphic and text will be linked to a form that will be used to collect the information online and send via a submit button to Jen and/or Corrie for consideration. If the information is of a more technical nature, idea will be passed on to appropriate person or team. Will need to develop list of appropriate people for specific types of ideas.

30.

Employee’s Corner – will contain various types of information that would be of interest to the employees. Layout is accordion type. When each title is hovered over, items under title will be seen. When curser leaves title, expanded items will be hidden and new items under new title will expand to be seen. 30.a – Employee Accomplishments – links to stories of employees who have achieved something great, are doing charitable work, earned a service award, etc. 30.b – Personnel Announcements – new hires or people appointed to a new position. Archive will be available as well. 30.c – Employee Profiles – can be linked to the IBM Connections being developed by Keith. Those looking for help with specific tasks will be able to find employees with those specific skills. 30.d – Picture of the Week – allows employees to share photographs of places or things, including family photos, parks, projects, etc. Must be a photo they took themselves. No copyrighted material accepted. 30.e – New Hire Resources – this area will provide links to all things a new employee should know about. This area will explain who, what, where, why and how an employee is to perform certain required documents or activities. The orientation thumb drive information is a good start for this section.

This is just a cursory introduction to the proposed intranet. Suggestions for layout, content, tabs, etc. are welcome. Research is still underway for the selection of the most appropriate platform to use as the content management system. SharePoint, DreamWeaver, IBM Connections, and WordPress, Joomala, and Droopal are all being considered. I’m developing a pros and cons list to help with the choice. Need to confirm if all aspects of the proposed page can be achieved. Site should also have page subscription ability. This will allow employees to sign up for a page and be notified when the page has been updated via email. Eliminates the need for the employee to remember to check back.
