Shingles Vaccine Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, and it is most common in older people. The vaccine helps your system to battle the virus and reduces your risk of shingles by half. A new study found that the small percentage of people who develop shingles, even after being vaccinated, have much milder cases. People who received the vaccine were 55% less likely to develop shingles and 65% less likely to be hospitalized for shingles. They also had a 63% lower risk of developing ophthalmic herpes, an eye complication. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if the vaccine is right for you.
