DEFINITION AND MISSION : The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement. Its mission is to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

PROCLAMATION: President Barack Obama has proclaimed March is Red Cross Month across the United States. The Ft. Kearney Chapter of the American Red Cross serves people in Buffalo, Kearney and Phelps Counties with limited services to other nearby counties.

HEALTH HEALTH & SAFETY SERVICES: SERVICES: The Ft. Kearney Red Cross holds monthly CPR, First Aid and AED training monthly for laypeople, child care providers and professional rescuers. The newest training includes information on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Water Safety instruction programs including training for Water Safety Instructors, Aides as well as Lifeguards and Lifeguard Instructors. Other programs include swimming lessons for school age children and the Infant, Preschool Aquatic Program (IPAP). HIV/AIDS Education includes programs for groups and individuals. Other Health & Safety programs include Sport Safety Training, Wilderness First Aid, Babysitter Training, Pet First Aid and others.

HISTORY HISTORY: The Chapter was first charted as the Buffalo County Chapter in 1917. It was rechartered in 1994 and annexed Kearney County in 1996 resulting in the new Ft.Kearney Chapter. Phelps County was annexed in 1998.

The Ft. Kearney Chapter is ready to respond to disasters, large or small, with food, clothing, shelter, medical and mental health services. In the past year chapter volunteers have responded to more than a dozen house fires in the area. Several chapter volunteers have advanced training and respond to large disasters in many areas of the United States - including New York City.
