Shifting Hybrrids Mixed-use in Tribeca, New York University of Pennsylvania Critic: Hina Janelle

The technique of creasing is introduced in a way to stimulate the undulating movements and interactions of the people and the environment. Creasing is also used as a system of structure that controls the size of the aperture. Beginning from the sidewalk, the creases gradually grow up to form the faรงade and inside of the building to become part of the circulation and furniture system.

Tribeca Landmark The proposal is a mixed-use of retail, hotel and residential apartment project that is looking to reinvent the identity of the brands, the user’s experience, and to breed a new type of shopping experience through notions of elegance and fluidity. The site is located in Tribeca, downtown Manhattan. The first three levels and the basement are designated to several high fashion boutiques. Levels four to eight are hotel and apartment units.

Unit Parameter Starting with the self-similar units, when the aggregation occurs, the units reorganize themselves based on the function and condition of the space to integrate each other until reaching their final forms. For the residential and hotel units, they interlock and collide into each other to form private areas and create a hierarchy of spaces.

Spidron Entwinement The Science Research Center University of Pennsylvania Critic: Srdjan Weiss

Proposed project is located along the Schuykill River, Philadelphia. Across from the university, the proposed development is to fulfill the needs of the expansion of the existing research center.Two distinct zone of the city is divided by the river, but are connected by the bridges and form the city double. Looking at the precedent Anne Tyng, from her method of connecting intersecting points of circles and basic geometry in golden ratio rotation, results in a petal-like spiral. If project these to three-dimensional, it will results in a continuous spiral.

The Golden Ratio Sprial Taking from the precedent Anne Tyng, and exploring her method of analyzing the transformation and variations she gets from the basic geometries. This new type of architecture generate the occupants the experience in different angle/ aspects.

Spidron is a c continuous flat geometric figure typically composed entirely of triangles, where for every pair of joining triangles, each has a leg of the other as one of its legs, and neither has any point inside the interior of the other.By dividing the square with golden ratio, we can get the results of four identical triangles. Filling them with different systems will be able to get repetitive pattern, and as the same characteristic with the original spidron, the pattern can go on and on until infinity.

Crystallization

Performance Center, Philadelphia University of Pennsylvania Critic: Simon Kim

The proposal is a performance center adjacent to the Philadelphia Peco tower. Taking from the experiment of the crystal formation, the design is based on a series of parquet deformation. Apply the charasteritic of soft to hard and smooth to rough to the experience of the space, including having a gradient transition of a series of spaces in different scales, and a shifting of even to coarses finishes.

Marterial Study Magnesium sulfate mixed with boiling hot water, and pouring the saturated solvent evenly onto a warm surface, and the crystal will form as the water evaporated. Color was added to the solution in order to observe the color changes. Generally, with a lower temperature, the crystals are smaller- in the cooling device, the crystal were needle-like.

Facade Layers Combines one or more other systems with the crystals and observe the reaction and interaction behaviors. Using different color solutions, and observe the color transformation from yellow to white to blue.

Parquet Deformation Parquet Deformation is an abstract designs depicting titlings that slowly evolve in space. The constant movement of the kaleidocycle can be mapped out as a parquet deformation as well.

Material Hybrids The interior surfaces transit from soft to hard, mimicking the progress of crystallization. The forest of columns in the lower lobby provides not only structural supports, but also forcing the interaction between the user and the space.

The Elaborate Self-Making Machines Full Scale Pavallion University of Pennsylvania Critic: Simon Kim

The inverted cube kaleidocycle component is a ring of six tetrahedrons that turn inward and outward on itself through a system of fixed hinges. The cyclical movement of the kaleidocycle and the range of open and closed shapes mimic the transitory patterns of polar emotion. The full scale pavilion started from the component, aggregated with two types of different connection logicedge to edge and face to face, each of the components would have effects on the other components and the whole pavilion when moved.

During the act of aggressing, human emotions explode, the body jolts, pulls and reaches outward beyond itself, longing for something it cannot satisfy from within-- a state of panic exists. While being aggressed, panic can ensue, but self-preservation is an instinctive priority. Solace can be found under the veil of isolation.

Aggression is an emotion that naturally has a scale of extremes and moderates. The tendencies of aggression can be interpreted throughout the world we live, including shape, pattern, movement, or reaction.

Project Description

This is a project for adaptive reuse of the historical landmarkFMC (Food Machinery Corporation) for a solar company’s headquarter. The building was abandoned for decays before the renovation started. The challenges here are to fulfill the client’s desire of having a decent headquarter and at the same time to preserve the history.

Two-story mixed used retail/ office building located at one of the busiest street in City of Industry. One of the elevation faces towards the 60 Freeway. In addition to provide a welcoming feeling to draw customers, maximize the square footage of the leas-able space is also the most important factor in this project.

One of most popular Chinese restaurant in San Gabriel valley, Capital Seafood, opened their second location in city of Irvine. It was the first original Chinese cuisine in Irvine Spectrum. To ensure we create the most authentic atmosphere, we worked with interior design Company from China. Most of the construction materials were imported.
