A Paper Fan

A great artist heard that a five-year-old daughter of a friend had received a paper fan for Christmas that she dearly loved. He offered to paint a picture on the fan for her, but to his surprise and despite her mother’s pleading, the little girl said, “No! You will not spoil my fan!” His painting on it would have transformed the plain cheap fan into a thing of beauty and its value would have increased a thousandfold.

Our lives may be small and common. Would we cling to them as they are when the Master Artist appears before us offering to make them fabulous?

Nearly two thousand years years ago on a star-lit night a babe was born. From the moment of his God-appointed and foretold birth, Jesus became himself a star in the darkest sky; a star by which each life might chart a course of divine favor and eternal joy. For each of us, the hinge of happiness is on the door of a Bethlehem stable.

During this season of wonder and joy give the Master your fan. Use these days to embrace and enjoy the true and immense value of the gift of Jesus. Worship with us, enjoy the fellowship opportunities here at Holy Trinity, visit again the story of God’s greatest gift. There are so many opportunities in this issue of The LINK to hear God say, “Give me your fan that I might refresh the gift of Advent. That I might once again transform you with the wonderful expectation of Emmanuel’s coming.”

&WORSHIP music

The Christmas Cycle—the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany—is filled with anticipation and wonder. We watch and wait for the coming of the Messiah. We rejoice with the angels at the birth of the baby Jesus. We follow a star with the Magi to encounter the Christ. Join us for worship throughout these seasons to experience the hope and joy that have come down to earth through the incarnation of our Lord and Savior.

Wednesday Bible Study

Afterlife—Heaven—Resurrection A Panoramic Overview continues December 4, 11, 18

This class is a study, review, and history of the countless beliefs and approaches to the question: “What happens after death?” With the obvious centrality of the Christian belief in “the Resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come” (Nicene Creed), the class will also offer an overall investigation into the non-Christian religions and the current landscape of the “life after death.” Concepts will include reincarnation, heaven, hell, beatific vision, theosis, immortality of the soul, purgatory, near death experience, the rapture, and more. This class will be taught by Dr. Thomas N. Colley, a retired Lutheran pastor. He and his wife Gail Keller Colley life in Durham, NC. They are the parents of Janine Webb, the wife of Pastor Chris Webb.
