LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT:

HAIR DRYER 2017 Fall semester Work in pairs Four months


LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Lean product development (LPD) is a lean approach to meet the challenges of product development, aiming to reduce long development cycle times and costs. Maximizing customer value is a core principle in LPD, but the value definitions used tend to be based on logical reasoning rather than real life observations. Feedback on the decision to design a certain feature will not be received until the product is in the hands of the customer. This means that decisions are made on short-cycle experimentation, prototyping, set-based design, and emergent practice. In this semester, we have walked through the LPD progress, including customer value identifying, competitor analysis, causal mapping and trade-off point finalization, to develope a more efficient budget hair dryer.

IDENTIFYING CUSTOMER VALUE OF A BUDGET HAIR DRYER

APPROACH We conducted two progress to identify the customer value of a budget hair dryer: thinking aloud test and interview.

We can see that most of the firms generally claim that their products have large wind volume and adjustable temperature. Those two features are the main competitive strategy on the market. On the other hand, we can also mark the customer values that most products on the market cannot satisfiy. Notably: wind smell, wind volume, taking-up cable, form aethetic, and noise.

TRADE-OFF POINT The obstacles we face are the parameters which are bounded by each other. That is the trade-off point of the design parameters. We have two choice to deal with the problem: to choose which side we should be or to try to break the trade-off relationship. Priority

COANDA SURFACE TEST As we have known that applying a Coanda surface to the wind outlet may suck the surrounding air to the flow and make the wind volume larger, we conducted an easy experiment to test if the idea can surely work and which kind of coanda surface we should apply.

TEST METHOD Use a hair dryer applied with each simulated wind outlet (5 types: A-D and none) to dry a piece of tissue and calculate the time spent each time. Because only the lower half of tissue is wet, we stop timing when the color of the lower half is the same as the dry upper half.

SmartAirflow

Smart airflow technology The egg-shaped wind outlet is an application of Coanda effect that amplify the airflow, producing a high pressure jet of air.

How it works When airflow passes by a Coanda surface (convex surface), it will have a tendency to stay attatched to the surface and draws the surrounding air into the flow. ambient pressure

XCELLENTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S LIGHT GUIDE TECHNOLOGY The light guide technology is to apply the triac dimming technology to the acrylic light guide boards that refracts the light softly through the acrylic, creating a comfortable lighting atmosphere.

DISCOVER

PROBLEMS WHILE USING TISSUE Most of tissue paper is packed in plastic bag, which is not very pretty. As a result, many people use tissue box. However, if the tissue paper is placed in a tissue box, it is hard to take it out while there is a little tissue left. By interview, I learn that most of people thinks that using tissue box can make the table look tidy. However, only about 30% people use tissue box. They think that using tissue box causes the inconvenience while replacing tissue.

3RD NCKU MUSIC DREAMERS FESTIVAL Consisting of live band performances, music theme exhibition, creative markets and workshops, NCKU Music Dreamers Festival is a grand activity in NCKU every summer, and also the only campus music festival in southern Taiwan. The festival is held by a work team made up of students from NCKU and some other universities in southern Taiwan. As the design director this time, I have designed the key vision, identity logo, website, brochures, crowdfunding project, promo merchandises, etc.

IDENTITY LOGO DESIGN

TAINAN CITY MONORAIL This is a logo design proposal for Tainan City Monorail System, which is under construction now. The idea comes from the front view of monorail train. I combine the front view of the train with the Chinese character Nan(南) from Tainan(台南) to represent Tainan Monorail. Since Tainan is the first city established in Taiwan and famous for its abundant history and culture, I try to design a logo which can present the cultural style of Tainan. The stamp-like logo symbolize the historical characteristic of Tainan.
